[Q] More Q's about the new tab - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi again everyone,
So I have been using the tab for a week now. She is all rooted and ROM'ed (CROMI-X with _that 3+ kernel) and it seems to be running pretty smoothly. Now it's time to actually start using the thing like I want to. One of the thing I want to do it watch movies and potentially listen to music on it while traveling. I connect it to my PC to move some of the movies I have over to it to try out and I am having a real tough time getting anything to copy to it. Most of the time the device stops responding sometime during the copy an times out. I also have a 16GB class 10 SD card that I mount in the docking station that seems basically unusable as I cannot copy anything to that.
So my question is; Is there some trick to getting Windows to copy things over to the device reliably?
and, what is going on with my SD card to make it so slow that it is unusable.
Thanks in advance for an help or input.
Jeff

That's odd. I'd try a wipe and re-install. More often than not relfashing fixes quirks like that.
If you want to avoid spending time backing up and starting from scratch, you could try writing to your SD card through a card reader on your Windows machine and moving files over to your internal storage within android afterword. That should give you a pretty good idea whether your problem is hardware or software.

Wont help, i've got the same thing on all devices that use MTP. (Sgs3, gt2, lg l5-2, tf700t.) Wether it's 50mb or 50gb, it disconndcts halfway through.
Never had it before jb, when the got rid of mass storage it started. MTP is a very rubbish protocol.
Just plug the microsd into the pc directly. Another option is using wifi sharing.

Thanks to both for the answers. I will try the suggestions. I guess putting the card in the PC will work. Kinda makes the internal 64GB i have hard to use though. I was able to copy over a couple movies to internal storage this morning without issue.
What is the MTP protocol? I see that as the device to eject in Windows. Is that something new?
Thanks again
Jeff

what is the format of your cards? I plug my tab in to the pc to move large files to it. Some are 4gb blu ray movies. And they copy just fine. If your cards are FAT you might want to change them to exfat or ntfs.

Best way to transer media to Captivate?

I transfered some pics to the phones internal storage using it as a mass storage. about 1000 pics and it took about 30 min. not only did it take long but they dont look the greatest on my phone. Am i doing something wrong? is there a better/faster way of transfering? using windows Vista btw.....
I put movies, music, pics, and other videos on my micro sd card and just insert that into the phone. Works perfectly fine!
thankfully my laptop has a built in card reader so i just use that to transfer files to an external micro sd card. its much faster than transferring over usb.
You could also install Swiftp and FTP to your phone over wireless.
The cable works well in my opinion and you need it to access the internal storage, If you go the card route make sure you unmount first or any open apps will immediate crash if they rely on any data on the card.
the other nice thing about the internal card is that you can keep all your app data on that and your media on the external and it keeps everything nice and clean.
and ofcourse when your external is full just continue on to the internal
if you use cubed (^3) for mp3, its awesome and can auto find album art, it'll automatically add from both sources
Unfortunately it won't be free forever, but it might be worth the investment. Doubletwist is a pretty excellent application. It's basically Itunes for Android.

that sounds like abnormally long write times.
Is your computer old? does it support usb 2.0?
have you enabled developer's console on your android and mounted your sd card via the notification menu when plugging your phone into your pc?
lastly, download samsung kies and get their drivers for the phone as well..
yes its 2.0. its an HP about 2 years old. maybe i didnt mount it, i cant remember. I just dragged and dropped. Wasnt sure if its an advantage using Kies or just doing the drag and drop method. Also is it better to keep everything off the internal if possible or does it matter? Just wondering how everyone transfers. tried to drop 3,000 songs the other day and it was like 3 hours! not at home right now so cant try it.

[Q] external drive

there is a usb hookup.. so the question is raised, in my mind, can you hook up an external hard drive and thus rendering the 13gb a non issue (at least in the area of video/audio files).
anyone had experience with this?
I've been able to use my flash usb thumb drives without any problems, however when I plugged my WD 1Tb storage drive into the GTab, used ES File explorer to open usbdisk folder but did not see any files listed.
If you want to use a external usb hard drive for movies/files it has to be formated fat32 and it will work.
I have connected with 16gb, 32gb, 64gb and a 500gb Western Digital HD (usb powered). All work fine, but best to NOT remove the USB until the G is placed in sleep mode. There appears to be an unmounting issue that also blows up the app index. Apps can vanish and then not appear again until rebooting.
Archos 101 seems to have a similar issue, so maybe Froyo related.

Yeah, I try to put mine to sleep before I pull out my thumb drive as well, but sometimes I forget and as soon as I yank it, the tablet reboots. Ugh!
I bought a 500gb Seagate the same night I got my tablet (been needing a portable hd for a while). It wouldn't work on either the tablet or my PS3. Definitely a format thing. As mentioned earlier, it needs to be formatted Fat32.
Just an FYI, formatting a big hd to Fat32 isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. Windows 7 won't do Fat32 and 95 has a size limit (32 gb maybe?). HP has a program you get download from their site. It works on any make, not just their's. If anyone needs it, I still have it on my PC at home.

What is the app called? Work with Vista? I tried formatting a 1gb HD to Fat32 via DOS commands, but failed.
As far as USB, main issue for removing while G is asleep (besides random reboots) is that removing while awake seems to be a main reason apps vanish until a reboot.
If I need to format a big, big hard drive to FAT32, I'll boot up a Linux LiveCD (usually Ubuntu or Knoppix) and use gParted to do it.

This is a different site but I think it is the same program. One of the comments said it didn't work on Vista business but YMMV. Worth a try.

I went and checked my reformatted portable drive a few minutes ago and the tablet doesn't recognize it. It actually says there are no files in that directory. The drive is working on my pc and PS3. I put a small 4 gb stick in the tablet and it read it fine.
Any ideas?
It recognized my Ipod 120GB classic in disk mode. It also appears to be hot swappedable.

It is hardware wise. Software wise, depending on ROM, it can crash your tablet. I try to put it to sleep before pulling my flash drive out. If not, sometimes it will go black and I'll see the boot animation.
I went to the link above looking for the Fat32 > 32 gig tool and it was not available.
If you need this tool, Google for "HP SP27608" and there are a few places where you can download it. HP didn't even have it on their FTP server -- don't know why they have quit offering it?!

Hi,
Sorry for the late post, but I just got around to trying a bunch of my USB flash drives, and Gtab doesn't see any of them ...
The LED on the drives flashes for a second, then goes off.
Do I have to mount it or something?
Jim
same problem here too. Is there a way to mount a USB drive without formatting? I do not want to loose my collection.
I've never had an issue with my Flash drives (VEGAn or TnT Lite). Are the drives formatted to FAT32?
I have had an issue with a 32GB USB flash drive not showing up on the gtab. I plugged it into my win7. Machine, moved files off, formatted fat, put files back on and it worked fine in the tab.
Another note, using vegan, I never sleep the device to get the drive out. Just wait a second and Yank it. Never been an issue for me.
I have noticed that my flash drives don't mount 100% of the time and sometimes require dis/reconnecting. Also I have a 1tb wd my passport. I formatted the whole drive fat32 and the gtab wouldn't see it. I then formatted just a partition of 120gb in fat32.....still no dice. I then reduced the partition to 32gb nd the gtab sees/reads/writes no problem.
I'm wondering how that other Guy got his 500gb to mount....
I'd like to know how folks have been able to get their external hard drives recognized as well. I have tried stock and tnt lite roms. Also tried several different hard disks all formated fat32. Even repartioned disks to 8GB and still no joy. Flash drives I own all work OK. Just can't use hard disk as yet. Even tried new rom image that came out today, no luck. Am I missing or not doing something?
The usb port does not supply enough power for external hard drives. I tried several and they did not show up in dmesg. When I used one with external power, the drive was seen and the partitions, but was not mounted.

Thanks, but 2 out of 3 drives I tried use ext power. still no work.
Can anyone who has this working please post what drive they are using?

Recognition problem?

Hello, I'm new to the forums and I just have to say this place is amazing and what with all the dev's and ROM's available and a great community overall.
To get to the problem that I am having currently with the SGS4G. I recently got the device, and I haven't got a SD card so its just the device itself for now. Well I try to connect the device to my laptop which is Win 7 64 bit. It didn't recog. the device but a popup came up saying that it was installing the drivers, I let it finish and tried to go into the device but when i went into My Computer to open up the device which is USB Connected using the Mass Storage option, nothing came up. Just a G drive icon with no name, just the icon thats it.
I then realized I should have installed the drivers for it first, so I installed the drivers found here for the 64-bit option as my laptop is running 64-bit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
I installed driver, but same thing happened as the above, nothing appeared when going into My Computer, just the icon and a pop up window that said "Please insert a disk into removable drive G".
Then I tried installing from the same source as above, but this time using the 32-bit link and the same thing happened as the above. I have tried to do the both with the USB debugging enable and disabled, then connected with USB to laptop, but no difference. The laptop see's the device when I go to Device and Printers, but the thing is the "My Computer" doesn't recognize the device or can't see it or the G drive doesn't see it.
I have tried unplugging the USB plug to the different USB ports on the laptop, but no good either. I have turned off the phone, plugged USB in and turned it back on but no good the laptop still doesn't recognize it. i have rebooted the laptop also and then tried everything above, but still no good.
If anyone can help out at all this would be greatly appreciated as I am going slightly insane with touching the device so much and trying to figure out a solution. I know it is not the Vibrant but the drivers from the link above is for Galaxy S devices it says. In case I didn't say so before, this device was rooted with Superuser evident in the Applications.
Oh please if anyone can help thank you so very much. Sorry for the first post being so long, but wanted to get as much detail as possible in here so I don't have to congest the thread later on with answering back and forth and wasting precious time.
One last thing, I rooted the device myself before on a Win XP machine, and everything was fine the XP machine recog. the device and everything, if that helps. But now I am on a laptop and received the device from my sister as she has got a new device.
Umm. Have you gone into the options on your phone where it asks you what usb connection type you want? The options it shows should be something like Kies, Mass storage, and two other options. I doub't mass storage would work for you, as you say you don't have an SD card. It might be the reason it's not showing up. Your computer is recognizing it if it's showing it when you click "my computer", but I think you have to have an SD card to actually open it up.
I'm not sure though, so don't take my word for it. Wait for a dev to chime in.
Not sure what you are trying to do but download airdriod from the market. No need for usb and I think it's faster than usb as far as transferring

Using your phone in mass storage mode basically turns it into an sd card reader. Since you don't have an sd card in the phone windows is telling you to insert a disk (sd card) into the drive (your phone).
You're gonna need an sd card if you're gonna modify your phone in any significant way. Even a 2 gig sd card will be enough to flash new roms, etc.
Thankfully, microSD card prices have fallen significantly over the past year or two.
I've had good luck with the Transcend cards, either the Class 6 or Class 10 ones. Right now, you can buy a 16 GB Class 10 card through Amazon for about $15, delivered. They aren't a lot more than the 8 GB cards.
I haven't found a 32 GB card that performs as well as these, especially for smaller read/write sizes, which I believe to be important for day-to-day responsiveness. The 32 GB cards (Class 6 or Class 10) are still usually more than twice the price of the 16 GB cards.
I find a USB microSD reader useful as well. I've had good luck with the Elago Nano readers (in white or black), as well as the Transcend 9-in-1. I'm sure there are many others that work well. In my opinion, you don't need USB 3.0 for a flash reader as the bottleneck is likely the microSD card, not the USB.
So from general consensus, it seems like I need an SD card first before I can do anything. Well, I just ordered an SD card from Amazon and it will be here by the end of the week. What i was trying to do was try to get files to store into the devices internal memory which has space free. I thought there was a way to transfer some files from my laptop onto the devices internal memory. is there any way to do this besides having to use an actual SD card? Just wondering. If it helps I have Airdroid installed now.

You can use adb (part of the Google-supplied Android SDK) to transfer files and execute commands on the device, but it is not a terribly user-friendly process if you aren't a command-line user.
ah. Thanks for all the help, I'm going to wait till the SD card arrives then guys.

Phone storeage (SDcard) backup

On my previous devices, I occasionally pulled out the removeable SD card, and ran a backup of the card to my laptop hard disk. I ended up with a 32GB card which was filled with music, videos, and work documents. So, I got the 32GB S III to have plenty of room. So now, generally, I have my music, documents, etc., on the S III internal 32GB SDcard as it is called. I have my videos and a few other huge items on the external removeable extSDcard.
Now the problem is, there is no practical way for me to back up the internal storage. It won't fit on what is left of my external card. I have a issues with my laptop so USB does not work, or is unreliable when it does, and too slow anyway. I don't really want to use the cloud. I have tried FTP, and it works, but clunky.
I'm thinking about getting an external hard disk and using an OTG cable. That is about the closest I can come to what I want.
Does anyone have any good solutions? I guess I could get a 64GB card, but if I got a 64GB card, I would prefer stuffing more videos and such on it, not wasting it for backup.
I'm rooted, simply so I could freeze some bloatware.
There are a bunch of questions I'd need an answer to before I could even begin to help:
What about your computer is making the USB connection spotty? Are the USB ports damaged?
What ROM are you running on your device?
What OS are you running on your laptop?
Are you familiar at all with adb? Do you have it set up to work on your laptop?
IMPORTANT: Backing up 32GB of data from anything to anything will take a long time. USB OTG will still run at USB speeds, so probably not much faster than trying to backup over USB to your laptop. Your best option will probably be something like my adb_bak2computer tool. Shameless plug I know, but its true. Well, only if you are running linux or mac (for now at least).
In the advanced options menu you can select "userdata" which will backup /data including your internal sdcard. I could write a new option to only backup the internal sdcard, actually I think I will.
Still, need answers to those questions.

USB is out. Long story, but basically, the laptop has an internal hub to drive all of the USB ports. A lot of devices refuse to cooperate when they are on the other end of a USB hub. Nice laptop other then that annoyance.

Most machines have a "USB hub" that drives multiple USB ports, so that shouldn't be a problem. Even if you were using an external USB Hub, and it was a powered hub, you should still be fine. Could be something wonky with your OS?
Anyhoo, if you've ruled out USB to your laptop, then its either some sort of Wifi file explorer (or wireless adb), or USB OTG.
Hope that helps,
ALQI

I'm not going to waste another minute on USB to the laptop. The USB has not worked on this laptop for years. I hope to purchase a new laptop early next year, or maybe a Surface Pro. Also, even when USB is working, I can't MOUNT it as a drive letter, so normal backup programs don't see it. I have to manually cut and paste. But that is all another story.
I really want to be able to MOUNT the S III SDcard as a drive over WiFi. That would be perfect. Then I could run an automatic backup script.

I use an app called "FolderSync" that lets you sync whatever you want with a shared windows folder. I do this on a schedule to backup my internal and external SD cards over my home network. But it is kinda slow, so if you have 32gb then it could take all day if you are syncing for the first time.
I use FolderSync quite a bit because it also supports Dropbox and a bunch of other cloud services. It was well worth the money for the paid version, but there is a Lite version also. I don't know what the limitation are on that.

That sounds like the ticket. I'll try it for a while and report back.
EDIT: After a quick test, this looks to be nearly perfect. I can set it up to sync to my network drive (or about any other wireless storage) with ease. Thanks.

MK809III Advice

Hi There.
I bought this off eBay and received it today.
Firstly I got it up and running with no problems at all. Plugged it in and away I went. Play store works fine. Happy Happy Happy!
Until I tried to install XBMC from their website. I clicked on the android version and 'no SD card' Flashed up. So i searched for the myfiles app and it wasn't there. But there is an explorer app. I opened that and can't access the internal memory at all?? In the eBay listing it says it should have 8GB of internal memory but when I look in the settings it says there is only 0.98GB free??
I've tried to connect the Android stick to my PC but it doesn't even recognise that I have connected it.
Is there something I am doing wrong???
Thank you in advance for any help on unlocking this otherwise great little thing.

MK809III stop reading Ext HDD
I bought my MK809III in May14, it's been working fine until last few days ago.It stopped reading my Toshiba external HDD. I have the MK809III connected to a self-powered USB hub, and connected my Air Mouse and External HDD through the Hub.
I have tried changing a new Seagate external HDD, a new USB Hub and even a different adapter, but it's still not able to read the content in the HDD.
Not sure what else can I do?
My earlier MK808b lasted more than a year, this MK809iii doesn't have problem with other APPs, except that it just can't read HDD.I used both the default file manager and ES file explorer.
Appreciate any help please, TIA!
Hi do you have access to a PC might need to check disk or scandisk on the Toshiba I had to do that from power failure caused drive to refuse to mount not sure about Seagate I'm using a custom ROM on my MK809III some have a 2TB limit I need to connect mine back up and see what it does with external hard drive just been using 32G micro SD and network file shares
