[Q] How to convert .tar.md5 to kitchen-modifiable .zip? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I'm new to XDA and new to Android, so go easy on me.
I want to edit a ROM using the Android Kitchen, so I have got my stock ROM from tsar300.com
However, the files inside the zip are a .tar.md5 and a link library. I know that this is for flashing with Odin, but is it possible to 'convert' this into a regular zip with a META-INF folder, system folder, boot.img etc?
Thanks in advance.

i dont know much about this.. but i think u will get those after flashing the rom on a device... from the sytem storage...
i could be wrong...

Hit Thanks if I am helpful

I was a bit unclear, but ripping might be an idea. What I want is to make a flashable ROM from a stock ROM.

[Q] framework-res.apk

Can someone please upload stock framework-res.apk from 10d for me? I want to get rid of this stupid theme from my O3D.
Thnx in advance!
EDIT: No worries, I have just custom restored system.img from clean backup available at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1179110
For easy revert, install zip attached using CWR. It is only for 10D.

Alright, first of all the link in the first post is missing . Next, should I use root explorer to just paste it in system location or is it a different procedure?

First post has been updated.
For your convenience I have attached an update zip, install it using CWR recovery. Please be sure to make a backup before installing, let me know if you run into any problem.
Thankyou it worked like a charm. One more question, is there any way to remove music player from the notification bar...

framework-res.apk is the file contain theme graphics and settings, you can ask any galaxy user to send you that file and then you can replace it using Root Explorer in system folder.
Second way is to download my patch and replace framework-res.apk file inside using any zip software and apply patch using CWD.
Goodluck!

[Q] Question for the deveoplers : how can I cook a new ROM ?

lol
Funny title
--------------------------------
Can I do the following for my Nexus S I9020T ? :
1.Let's assume I have the stock ICS ROM for I9020T , the 160mb zip file "ZD3PyN0t.zip" on my computer ..........
2.Unzip it using WINRAR
3.Make some modifications on the folder , like boot animation , some ringtones , delete camera focus sound , etc ....
4.After finnishing that , Zip it again using WINRAR (using the same setting of compression and what not) ...
5.Copy it to my SD card
6.Using CWM to flash it from CWM recovery ...
7.Be done with it ...
- Is that perfectly possible ? does the "ROM build" needs anything extra ?
- I see the stock official ROM in the properties , in comments "signed by SignApk" .. is that something to worry about ?
Thanks
up for an answer
Sure you could do that... but building from source is where it's at
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
So the resultant "ROM" will work no problem ?
Yeah it will work lol... but build from source!

Source is for compiling . Meaning you compile from the source, the source is where all the stuff are kept. Something like that.

I can't seem to find the system and META-INF folders. Any clue's as to where to look?
oooo got it. These folders don't belong to Odin/.tar packages but to CWM/.zip files. Files that are included in .tar packages have extensions .bin or .img. There are no folders there.

First thing-- if you are a n00b without much knowledge about ROM/Kernel/ etc.. Dont venture into the ROM development etc. world u will end up screwing the device.. Read,understand,ask.. then when u feel u know enough go ahead--
Still if you want to know--Then--
Put the factoryfs.img,cache.img into the original update folder of HTC kitchen.. then Open the kitchen using Cygwin.. And tap option 1.. then press enter .. then press 1..then wait it will extract.. then when u get a set of instructions.. Open ext2explore and select the new ext4_factoryfs.img in WORKING FOLDER-sytem.. then right click and save.. It will extract the system--
There u get your /system... Thats what I did

It would be great if you can post some links from where we can learn how to make custom ROMs . . .
Its never too late to start & it would be great to learn the nuances of CROM making.

^^ First thing: I am no pro.. Just a student--learning--
Yes for a guide--there are plenty of them so far I have come across 4 tutorials .. But for a beginner I suggest you go to the Galaxy SL android development forum and check the tutorial made by bangalorerohan.. There is still lot that goes into making a Custom ROM but that tutorial should help to get you started.. Also follow that guide to the T and u will be able to make one for the Galaxy SL .. You can use it to make for other phones also but some aspects may change...

N About Developing?! Porting is not as easy as Guides say
Using Kitchen will get you started but not a pro!
What Emo Said Is correct!
Read,Learn,Try N Code! Java n Linux is must! N moreover you should be ready to get your device out of brick! And its always a Pita

I'm sure I can handle all of that. If there's a way to unbrick, then that's just too good. It takes my fear of flashing roms away. I don't care how long it takes. I just need a path to follow.

4.0.3 camera .apk

Hi all, I did something stupid. I wanted to modify camera .apk to delete focus sound but I did not backup original .apk and now I dont have camera on my phone. It wont let me install modified .apk and I dont have original one-stupid I know. If someone could give me the original camera .apk from 4.0.3 original rom I would appreciate it,thank you.
Whats the problem extract it from ROM?
Badly I have the 4.0.4 cam from RocketROM still you can get the file in here if iam not mistaken someone made a mod for camera and its in this thread search it.

I dont have rom to extract from, I will download one from samfirmware and extract it from there, I just thought that someone here has it already extracted so it would spare me some time. I did search forum but didnt find camera .apk from 3.0.4, will try with .apk from 4.0.4,thank you.
So I still have same problem. I downloaded rom from samfirmware but I dont know how to extract .apk from it. I tryed to open rom file with win zip and 7 zip but no luck. With 7zip I can unpack it to the stage where I get chache, hidden and factoryfs .img files. I belive .apk files are inside factoryfs.img but I cant open it with any program. If someone knows the solution for this please help, thank you.

Still it wouldn't help you can mount the files and extract what you need but its gonna be odexed and you will have to deodex it again manually better look for a rom based on 4.0.3
Edit:
I uploaded Camera from 4.0.4 to my dropbox hope this works just in case.... never tried to...
