Security Question - General Questions and Answers

First off, apologies if this is the wrong forum for this...
I've recently moved from the UK to Australia, today I used Chrome on my HTC One to visit Amazon.com (the mobile version of the site) for the first time since arriving. To my surprise the login details were already auto filled, no big deal, except that the details didn't belong to me. Part of the username has a number combination which is identical to part of my password. I logged in but not expecting it to work, but it did work. I am able to view the person's full details, they are neither UK nor AU based, they have a credit card on file etc.
Can anyone advise me on this? My phone is protected by a pin, and actually never leaves my side, so I'm 100% certain that no physical access was gained through my phone. Is this likely to be a problem with Amazon, or Chrome, or my mobile has somehow been compromised? I'm not a hacker and I haven't been attempting anything 'dodgy', I'm just wondering how this was possible.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Edit

Can you give us a little more detail ? I mean, did this happen more than once ? What network were you using to connect to the internet ? etc
If it just happend once it might be a glitch. (Maybe with the cookie ? )

I haven't re-tried it, I'm on the Optus network. Unsure where you're going with the cookie idea, why would my phone have a downloaded cookie with a random person's credentials stored? If this is a glitch then surely it's a huge glitch?

WaveSecure..

Anyone getting an account? They are giving away lifetime membership for those who download and register.
It is basically like mobile defense (which is also great and free) but it give the option to wipe the phone & the SD card. a few months ago I lost a G1 and I would have love to be able to wipe everything.
I figured it is a must for my Nexus.
Just wanted to put it out there for those who didn't know.
Were you able to log in into their website?
I'm using it, and I'm very impressed. This is a must download app. However, the site is very slow and you often have trouble connecting to it.
Haven't tried logging into their website yet, just downloaded it today. Still at work and no access to that site. I know mobile defense was fairly simple and I figure it shouldn't be much different.
Dled , installed , and tried it out the other day. GPS was off by alot but the other stuff seemed to work.
I've tried it a few times over the past 2 days and am very impressed. The website worked great... no problems connecting for me. Also, the GPS was right on!
I've been using it for about a week and a half now its pretty awesome i think, i had some problems backing up my contacts but got that fixed, other than that it works flawlessly for me.
Ok I see what I did wrong, you have to put +15556667777 (+1 for state side) to log in.
As for tracking, it worked really good for me.. only off by like 7 feet. Had no problems backing up contacts, sms, etc. Works good for me. hopefully i'll never really have to use it but if I do I have trust i'll find my phone in no time.
wow that's pretty nice. free even.

Yep. And When you get the country code or number wrong, they charge it as an international text, which you have to pay for. So be careful when inputting those numbers!
I also found that the app works extremely well, downloaded it the first night I had the phone.
has anyone compared wave secure, mobile defense, or lookout mobile? Do they all do the same thing?
Seems like a pretty good app from using it for a bit. Only problem I have is that the GPS can only be updated 4 times a day. Would seem pretty hard to track someone down if you cant update the position that often.

that is where mobile defense comes in. You can pretty much stream an active location through mobile defense. getting better the longer it stays on.
Un-Installing?
Would the remote wipe and location features work if the "thief" removed the application from their phone?
Doubt it, unless you password your screen so they can't get access to do that. But then they might try a different sim card at which point they will see the screen about returning it. But if this person knows anything about the android system, couldn't they just unlock it, replace the bootloader and format the phone, regardless if its locked or not??
Guess you better hope that last couple GPS locations is his house or work..
How would this work?
Say someone straight up steals my phone, i put it down, turn to grab something, turn back and its gone. ok, GPS... i know where the SOB lives. Then what, call the cops? Wouldn't I need a IMEI and serial to prove its mine? Wouldn't the cops need a search warrant to look in his house to find your phone?? Or should I just bust down his door and beat the crap out of him?
How would it go down to get it back?
Beware of the hidden cost
BTW unless they have changed it but every time you receive a txt from wavesure you will get charged.
I know they have stop it for the US, can't confirm for the rest of the world.

charged by wavesecure or standard sms rates from the carrier?
I believe it is a foreign received txt. you were getting charged like 20 cents.
It was on a forum where wavesecure was participating.
They changed it in the US but I am unsure for the rest of the world.
I will find the forum once I am back home.

Shocker on my last phone bill, malware in rom?

Shocker on my latest phonebill. My phone have sent allot of sms too 0020000001 (egypt) since 2011-09-28 too 2011-10-18. Seems to have stopped now when I use senseless. Used bulletproof before if there was some app incuded in that relese. :-/
I've been using all of the ROMs available in the dev section.
Still have zero text messages and 1 phone call (test on the day I got it, to my other cell) on my whole account history.
Confirmed with t-mobile.
Outgoing, which is the issue I assume - get text messages from T-mo, working on putting a stop to this.
It took some serious effort and a threat of cancellation to t-mo to get them to stop calling me, but the only incoming calls I've ever had to this phone were from t-mo, and I never answered.

Strange it is anyway. Found this thread where they mentioned the same number. I don't use T-Mobile though.

and

But they all say from egypt. Not sent to?
i'm also having the problem, but i did apply the fix and even after that, i still have this sms. In my case is worse then people from t-mobile, because o2 dont have a "real time" or almost real time controll, which means that i need to wait the bill to see the crap. they dont have any controll for people who had plans, only pre paid. this month was 5 euros only with this ****..
i readed the posts on tmobile forum, its seems to be a program, but i'm not sure.. nobody is.

i'll take a look and tell you back, but just more information: Before my MT4GS i had a Desire HD and i NEVER had this kind of problem with it. and so far i remember, i used the same programs on Desire HD, so.. it shouldnt be a programm problem, at least not which i had installed.
Now i'm using the virtual unity rom, which doesnt had the zipwhip thing, which the people on tmobile/tcom forum accused be the problem.
the programs that i used so far was: öffi, call meter ng, safewallet, ebuddy, foursquare, facebook, twitter, quickboot, sms back and restore, viber, whatsapp, heywire, adfree. I also had on the device but i dont use frequently: convertpad, currencyconverter, dein taxi, weather bug, androzip, mytaxi, barcodescan, scan life barcode, roboform, wm ftp client, db navigator, es explorer, skype, shazam.
and yesterday i also installed autorunmanager and super manager, to try to disable or uninstall the zipwhip thing.
i'll look the permissions on all this apps and i'll post here. The thing is, since i install yesterday a new rom and i didnt put every program back, can i see this on google market?

So, i recovered the old rom backup with the old programs, took off my simcard and installed a few permission viewer programs.
The list from Permission Explorer to send sms permissions are:
brcmbluetoothservices (com.broadcom.bt.app.system), doubleshotandroidzipgroups (com.zipwhip.zipgroups.doubleshot -this is the one from zipwhip, which people think, that the problem is), dragon dictation (com.nuance.vsuite - no idea what is it),mail (com.htc.android.mail), messages (com.android.mms), messages app group tab (com.zipwhip.zipgroups.doubleshot.plugins.messages), messages widget (com.htc.htcmsgwidget3d), my account (com.nuanc.nmc.sihome), phone (com.android.phone), plugin sample(com.android.messagetab), scanlife(com.scanlife), t-mobile device carbon(com.zipwhip.devicecarbon.tmobile), viber(com.viber.voip), whatsapp(com.whatsapp), voice search(com.google.android.voicesearch).
it was kind of weird that scanlife, something to scan barcodes just can send sms, but i had this program since the desire hd without problems, so.. i'm not sure that could be the problem anyway..
---------- Post added at 02:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:28 PM ----------
Well i did some tests with a prepaid o2 card (then i can check the credits) and after i uninstalled viber and whatsapp, restarted the cell, i still have the problem. Then, uninstalled the scanlife, restart, still the problem. Then i uninstalled everything with doubleshotandroidzipgroups, zipgroup, zipwhip.. and again restart.. credits didnt change, so its seems, people have right, this program cause the sms problem. but i can understand why not everyone had the problem, since in almost all roms (except the virtuous rom ported from desire s) had this software.
I asked to a few friends, who used android gingerbread, but not a MT4GS and any of then had this zipwhip programs or anything like this..

Ok, so looks like you've tracked down the malware. WTF is a "zipwhip"?
Edit: Holy crap, just read their website. Might not be malware (or it might be), but definitely a braindead idea since it does weird multi-directional SMS insanity.
Anyway, the reason it doesn't happen with Undeadk9's rom is that he stripped that crap out of it.
Somebody at HTC and/or tmobile need to be FIRED for this one.

i cannot say for sure, but the roms sense on crack and senseless still have this one (at least, until the roms from yesterday, because i downloaded then for a test).
The weird thing is that doesnt happen with ALL people. but tmobile is experiencing a lot of problems with this crap. but since i bought the cellphone in USA and live in germany and my operator here is o2, maybe they will say: isnt our problem and make me paid this 6 euros this time..
Nice to know what the reason was. Will stick to Undeahk9's roms then.

Have tried with my operator. That was exactly what they said. They refereed to: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/6619?start=75&tstart=0 Said follow the outcome, it is T-Mobiles problem or change to another phone.
Last month i wrote to o2, complaining about it and requesting a solution and from where or who this number was.. they gave me a credit after a few lines like: it could be cause by a bad software, blablabla, you are responsable for everything that you install on yout phone, blablabla, but since you are a good costumer and we want you happy, we will give you the credit.
Now i'm waiting the new answer about the problem, since i wrote asking for a SOLUTION and not just a credit and they just said we will give you a credit and thats it.. they didnt offer me to put the number in a blacklist, or any kind of solution. then i'll try to at least become the credit back. and if they dont give me, i'll complain with t-mobile USA, because this is a big mistake and could be avoided.
did you tried contact with tmobile us?

This puzzles me as well.
I've definitely checked, and rechecked with T-Mo to make sure i'm not having this issue, especially after reading through this thread and all the links provided.
Seems like many people are having the issue, yet many others are not.
Hopefully if people keep posting little details they come across about the problem we can eventually find a common link that binds together all the people having issues.
Stuff like this is of concern to me, and while I haven't been posting because i've had nothing else constructive to add, i've been keeping up and playing along looking for an opportunity to help.
Best of luck to all of you, keep sharing and we'll get to the bottom of it eventually.
Got no issues with the Zipwhip "Groups" software.
I can confirm that I've had this issue show up this month, and I'm using UndeadK9's AOSP Gone Crazy on Sense ROM. I don't run anything outside the norm for a superuser (memory manager, task killer, busybox, spare parts etc).
I have similar problems in my MT4GS. Soon after receiving the phone few days back, I started noticing the charges for incoming messages from Egypt on my online account. These messages never show up in the phone, I only see the charges on line. T-mobile officially announced (support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2882) that they will not give customer any credit back for the messages, even though it is generated by some bloatware they installed on device.
These messages created $2 charged in 5 days...in this rate I would end up paying $12 to t-mobile for nothing. In fact, I found this forum while desperately looking for a solution. It is a t-mobile phone, it is a t-mobile service, it is a t-mobile installed bloatware and they will charge customers $12 a month. Is it sort of technique to force customers to signup for $10 unlimited text service?
Reading this forum gave me some hope. I guess I will have to root the phone and use Titanium Backup to freeze all ZipWhip apps. One of my neighbors said that he was successful in stopping these charges by freezing all ZipWhip apps.

my problem was: i HAVE unlimited text messages on my cellphone (its already on my o2 contract) but this DOESNT cover the international sms, whats mean that problably t-mobile also had something like it, you will pay for unlimited sms but not international one, whats mean, that you still have to paid for their crap work.
i didnt know that they said, that they wouldnt give the money back.. people from usa, who had this issue should suit tmobile. i would.

[Q] Sgs2 stolen

My sgs2 got stolen today. Sad day..
Is their any way to track that phone down? Localize it or something?

If it doesn't work then I'd recommend reporting the phone as stolen so you can claim a new one on insurance.

Yes. Plan b.
Install from your computerat play.google.com. Log in and push app to your phone. It sends you emails of where your phone is.
I want to see how this pans out.
i have used "plan b" b4 and it works like a charm if you still have some juice or if the thief hadn't reset it yet give it ago and track the bugger and be sure to smash the guys head in and nick your phone back and also take his
hope you find it
How about using Samsung push?

I tried Plan B, just out of curiosity, and found that it installed but did not run. You can't make an app that automatically runs when it's installed. That would be a massive security violation. I don't even know if it can be installed as a service so that it runs when your phone reboots - I don't think it can.
paintball23456 above is the only person I've ever seen say it works. It certainly didn't for me.

[Q] To root or not to root

wrong placeHi,
I am new to all this so please forgive what's probably a repeat. I have had a browse but can't find an answer to my specific problem.
I got a nearly new note 3 on e-bay and only saw the 'doesn't work in UK' warning after I bid (I know, stupid or what, but I swear it wasn't there before I bis as I was looking out for it). Anyway, I decided to take it on the chin and do what I needed to do to make it work.
I read around, this site is great, and decided that I would need to root and was quite prepared to do so but, then the phone arrived and the confusion set in.
The phone doesn't ask for an unlock Sim password or have the screen shown in the 'How to... you youtube videos' I don't have to dismiss anything to get into the phone and play with it. It's connected to my home network fine and and I can play with it to my hearts desire. It does everything in fact except make phone calls (my Dad thinks this is hilariously funny, a phone you can't use as a phone hahaha).
When I do try to make calls it says it is not registered to the network but when I have gone into settings to check it says it is!!!
I don't want to go to trouble of rooting if it doesn't need it but, what do I need to do!?!
Also there is the new kitkat thing that's thrown more confusion into my little life, if I root will I get that and if I don't, do I or should I care?
What good is a phone that doesn't make calls?
Any advice, hints or tips with this would be great x
So implying from what you've written on nearly new note 3? So it's secondhand? Why not try to factory reset it? If it that didn't help might as well flash a new firmware on it before you go rooting.

I say root that sucker! Then try the app Region Unlocker from Chainfire so that you can make phone calls.

when phones are tagged like that in the UK (especially on eBAY) it generally means they are IMEI Blacklisted, therefore they won't work on any UK network ever.
If you are lucky, it's not reported stolen, cause if it is then there can be issues, I have seen people buy stolen phones and have their GPS on only for the Police to show up about it.
My advice, is go through eBAY and claim for goods not as advertised and stolen merchandise, the seller probably won't reply to the dispute and you'll get your money back.
Lol. Root it, otherwise what's the point of having a phone you can't use as a phone

[Q] Random new sim contact appeared

Hi all
I am completely lost on this and am really hoping someone can help.
I was scrolling through my contacts recently and I saw a contact I have never seen before. All my contacts are linked to my Google account however his one was a sim contact. It had a picture attached to it of someone I have never seen, the name is not someone I know and when I went into the contact there us a US phone number and address (I am in the UK and do not have any contacts in the US. I have never interacted with this person in any way.
I have Googled the number and address with no luck, I have also searched to see if anyone else has had a problem like this and cant find anything. I have run a few virus scans and they have all come back clean. I have not installed any new apps as far as I can remember recently.
Has anyone else ever seen this before?
Samsung Galaxy S3, rooted, stock rom, Android version 4.1.2
Sorry, I am not usually one to bump but I would really like to get some ideas on this.
