[Q] New Tf300t Owner

Hi all, Soon to be joining the ranks of happy tf300t owners but I have a couple of questions.
I bought my tf second hand and only afterwards I noticed that It comes rooted and unlocked.
Will this affect my ability to get OTA updates? And will I be okay to use factory restore when I get it to be sure its securely wiped (I softbricked my hannspad once by performing a factory reset after applying a honeycomb ROM, still don't understand why but just want to be sure theres no chance of that happening here.)
If it does affect me is there an easy way I can set the device to a way that I can get OTA? And do factory resets if thats even an issue (I do have some limited flashing experience with my Hannspad).
And lastly are there any must have apps? (Willing to pay) Or even just tweaks etc to make my transforming experience more pleasant?

Well if it already unlocked then doing a factory reset will be fine and will not brick anything. But before you do that i would boot into recovery and make sure its twrp 2.2.2.0 and not another twrp version or clockworks.
No you can't get OTA updates since its unlocked but that is not a big deal, just wait for a Dev to add it to there ROM or just get the stock firmware from asus site and flash it yourself.

flashing the updates your self is only slighty more work the the ota ones mate but as its already roote thats makes up for it and the first few apps that come to mind are adaway, titanium back up, bsplayer (for movies) and dolphin browser (with the jet pack add on)

Just so you know, if you are running jb, do not attempt to flash anything ICS, either ROM or recovery. Make sure what you're flashing is designed for jb, otherwise you might brick your tablet.
You can't get ota when unlocked, but Asus is good for posting their Roms on their website shortly after an ota update is released. There are several guides here which tell you different ways you can install them. Its not hard at all.
Finally, if unlocked, you cannot relock.

[Q] Tired of speed issues. Unlocking/ROM options?

I'm tired of the random reboots and random performance issues on my tf700. I'm ready to give unlocking and custom ROMs a try, but am unsure of what my best options are. I've been reading up for a couple of hours, and there are a few questions that I have that weren't answered conclusively in my readings.
Some pertenent information:
My TF700 is rooted, locked, and on firmware 10.4.4.25
I have experience using command lines, ADB, CyanogenMod and ClockworkMod on my Nexus S phone
I have a UHS-1 64GB external MicroSD card installed
Now on to my questions:
NVFlash. Is there a way for me to install it? Can I downgrade my firmware to make it work, or am I completely SOL until ASUS release an update that doesn't block it? How dangerous is it to not use NVFlash? My Nexus S can recover from a plethora of bad flash situations, even with the recovery partition. At worst, I can just flash directly through ADB. Is the TF700 as versatile, or are there added pitfalls I should know about?
ROM suggestions? I have the keyboard dock and use it all the time (including plugging in USB devices), so the ROM would have to support it. Ideally I would like a ROM that has (at least) all the features of the original ASUS firmware, but better performance.
Should I be doing the Data2SD mod? Does it noticeably improve performance substantially?
I have a lot of large games installed, and would like some kind of App2SD support to move them to my SD card. Do any of the ROMs provide that?

NVFlash: unfortunately you cannot get it with newer firmware than 9.4.5.26, and you cannot downgrade below 9.4.5.30. The biggest danger of not having NVFlash: if your recovery is broken or incompatible with the bootloader and you choose 'wipe data' in the bootloader menu, your tablet is hard bricked - it won't even respond to fastboot.
ROM: if you want an improved ASUS ROM, use CleanROM Inheritance. However I cannot guarantee that you won't have random reboots - even I have them, and I am the maintainer of the slightly improved stock kernel used in CROMI...
Data2SD: I have no personal experience other than some experimental use, but with a fast card, people report performance improvements.
App2SD: I don't know of any native support in CROMI, but it should be possible by creating some symlinks and bind mounts to put any data wherever you want.

What's the best recovery mod option? I've only ever used CWM, but that's on my phone. Is TWRP (or something else) a better option for the TF700?

Right - always test a newly flashed recovery with the power+volume button first before using any app or option that automatically reboots to recovery. Also don't flash standalone bootloaders if they are incompatible with your recovery. And don't erase your recovery with fastboot.

I prefer TWRP; haven't used CWM on this device.

I don't understand the random reboots. I never get them. I use your kernel v4 and CROMI (obviously). I wonder what the specific scenario is to induce a reboot?

Agreed. I run the stock kernal and Cromi and have no reboots. I have maybe 3 times since I started using Cromi, but thats been 3-4 months now. Plus it expected when testing different things.

Unfortunately, I still don't know what triggers it. I found and fixed one kernel bug that causes a reboot when reading a specific file in /sys - this was easy to fix because it is a very simple kernel function with a very simple bug, and it was reproducible with a simple shell command.
One other "random" reboot I had at least twice seems to be related to invalid data in the timer subsystem - I suspect it is some locking problem (race condition between multiple threads), but that's hard to find and fix - especially if you don't have any experience with the code or with kernel development generally.
For now the best we can do is collect crash dumps from /proc/last_kmsg and try to find some pattern.

Any chance you will release _that v6 kernel with the fix you have so far?

Help confirm full Root/Recovery/Rom process

My wife has finally decided she'd like me to put a custom ROM on her TF101. I have experience (both good and bad) on my phones and tablets, but she doesn't want hers "messed up." So, I'm a lot less comfortable taking chances with her device than I am with mine. She still loves her TF101 and uses it daily and I don't want to mess it up. Her TF101 is still stock, not rooted, and has the last available ASUS update on it (IML74K.US_epad-9.2.1.27-20120615).
Initially my research indicated this was going to be the quickest and easiest Root/Recovery process I've ever gone though! Download Razorclaw to the device, run it to get root. Download Recovery Installer to the device, run it to get CWM. Easy peasy mac and cheesy. But, Razorclaw seems to be gone. The link to the tool gives a Page Not Found error. Another link on that site outlines a complicated process with a bunch of adb shell commands that made me a little uneasy. Recovery Installer likewise is no longer available at the link given in the first post of that thread. There's a link to a mirror location later in the thread, but if it's not available from the person who made it, then I have to worry. I've also now realized that her firmware version is not compatible with those tools to begin with!
So with my reluctance to upset my wife, some outdated information floating around in the threads, I just wanted to confirm my current plan was the proper way to go.
Use the PERI-0.42 tool to root and install TWRP. I wish I could find a video or screen shots of the process so I can know what to expect. (Or should I use the "1-Click Transformer Root" tool? I'm thinking not as TWRP would be preferable to Rogue Recovery?)

As for which ROM, Root-Box looks interesting, but it says the camera doesn't work and my wife uses the camera (and the CamScanner app) frequently, so that's a no go. So, I was thinking about Paranoid-Android or No-name CM10?

First, Razorclaw only works on a very few firmwares, and the .27 is not one of them.

This uses EasyFlasher and APX mode. It does install an older TWRP, but if you replace the twrp.SOS file in the EasyFlasher "tools" folder with the latest official 2.3.2.3 file found here: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf101/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.2.3-tf101.blob (rename to twrp.SOS and replace the file) then EasyFlasher will flash the 2.3.2.3. EasyFlasher will show the old version in the menu drop down, however it will flash the newer version. If you want TWRP 2.5.0.0 you will need to get it from the thread in the development section.
I have used Peri 0.4 in the past, and it is very easy to follow the prompts. I have not made a tutorial or video of it, but as I said it is pretty straight forward.
As far as the ROM to flash, I am using Domination right now and have flashed the RootBox one as well. At the current time the keyboard dock has little support for both of these ROMs. Many users have had issues with SOD and RR on the CM10.1 no-name. My favorite for stability and features is still TeamEOS 4. It has full dock support and is very very fast and stable.
I am actually looking to restore my EOS 4 Nandroid later today.

Easyflasher is about as no-brainer as you can get, I would recommend using that to install TWRP recovery (note: and update to a newer version as per above poster).

I've used it with three different PC's and three different TF101's without any issues, and I've used it to revert to stock a couple times on mine.
As far as ROMs are concerned, I have had the best luck in term of a happy blend of fully-baked (everything works)/stability/compatibility/features/speed-smoothness with the EOS 4 ROMS and KAT kernals, though I have as of yet only given the latest PA ROMs (with halo) a quick look. I am admittedly biased on that front since I switched to EOS 3.0 long ago, but I also haven't heard of any complaints from my folks or a friend who are running slightly older versions of the EOS 4 ROM.
Some people say they aren't pleased with smoothness with the stock launcher in EOS (I run Nova Prime on mine and Nova free version on the other two I've helped "upgrade", seems quite smooth to me). I don't know if that is a perception issue, a difference in hardware, or maybe installed apps/widgets. Or if it is still even an issue.
The only issues I have had on mine (SOD's/RR's) in many months was with one short-lived version of the Kat Kernal, which was fixed asap. For me, it's just as stable as the last official ASUS ICS update, and way way more stable the the preceding one.
By all means, give them all a shot, but I have never really had a problem with using EOS as a daily driver.

I had the same firmware - I used PERI to root and went with EOS nightlies v118 and KatKernel v103. Best decision I ever made. Stable, fast and enough features to sink a battleship.
I overlock to 1400mhz using smartassV2 governor. IO scheduler is set to 'sio' (settings->EOS control center->syste,->Performance settings). Since then its been a dream to use, no lag, no waiting. I stuck the dolphin browser on for good measure. Since all that was done, its smooth, fast and really enjoyable. To think a week ago I was ready to sell it and get something new, no need to do that now!

About a month ago I had what I thought was a hardware issue with my microSD card reader and started a thread in this subforum about that. Someone suggested I try flashing a custom ROM before I try replacing hardware. Long story short I am now running TeamEOS + Kat kernel and everything is great. Tablet is faster and more stable than it ever was on stock and its nice to be running JellyBean. Only warning, you'll need TWRP not CWM to flash ROMs using Android 4.1+ but otherwise there really isn't too much to worry over.

I got my wife set up with the Team EOS 4 ROM last night. I ended up having to use PERI instead of EasyFlasher. I couldn't seem to get the tablet into APX mode. Vol UP + Power either did absolutely nothing, or the PC just couldn't "see" the tablet in APX mode. It could see it just fine upon regular boot, and I got the "new device" ding as soon as it started booting, but nothing when trying to enter APX. Vol DOWN + Power, then Vol UP to enter RCK mode brought up the "dead" android with the red triangle for a few seconds, then it rebooted.
But, PERI worked like a charm to root and install TWRP. Then I flashed TeamEOS 4, and she went to work setting it back up.

let us know how she gets on with it ,it really is a great rom my tab has never been so quick i use nova launcher and dolphin overclock it in setting to 1400 i have mine on 1504 and still see good battery life ,,,,,,install goo manager from play for updates to rom and also pimp my rom is good for a few tweaks here and there ,,but first when its all set up and working good MAKE A BACK UP i always make back ups as i go along i have 2 all the time only takes 320 seconds ,,,,,enjoy

I tried that ParanoidAndroid and it wouldn't get past the boot animation. I didn't try that Kernel, or an older non-Halo'd version of PA.

Yep, the TWRP install via Peri worked flawlessly. It was vesion 2.5 of TWRP (Peri v0.42)

Questions about installing CleanROM

Hey everyone. Just joined the tablet world and bought a TF700T because the specs looked awesome (2 weeks in). I have to admit though i was extremely disappointed on how it performed stock. So i took the plunge, voided the warranty by unlocking it, then rooted it to install GooManager / TWRP and then flashed CM10.1.2 on here. I did a format, fresh data but i have to say its still not up to par. I did a side by side with my Galaxy S3 and its out performing the tablet (same ROM).
I saw a video for CleanROM and my jaw dropped. Being that im kindve new to the scene i truely dont want to hard brick something i just bought. I was getting discouraged by the CleanROM instructions a little.
My question is - Since i have already unlocked the bootloader (VIA the asus website), rooted the device and already have a custom rom do i just need to download the CleanROM zip and flash it? It says format so in that assumption i should have the CleanROM zip on a micro SD? Alsoshould i get ODEX or DEODEX? I read the difference between the two and im thinking DEODEX.

I would recommend Cromi X Ver. - 4.7 which is more up to date version. Read this post:

I use deodex. Sbdags uses odex as he mentioned in an earlier post. I will probably change in my next update. Use what the master recommends.

If you were already on the latest Asus ROM before moving to cm 10.2 then it should be fairly easy to switch to CROMi-X. You will need a full wipe though. I'm assuming you did that when going to 10.2 as well as that would cause all sorts of issues if you didn't do it.
What is about the instructions of CROMi-X that makes you nervous?

wow that super annoying. So i had this long typed out reply and it force closes on me as i open a tab to get a benchmark pic...
i was getting discouraged with the bootloader and what one i had, did a quick research and found out how to find the bootloader version and i was set to just flash. Wiped with TWRP and come to find out the .zip ROM had a nice install and that also gave an option to wipe which i did.
something just still aint right IMO. I keep getting major hiccups. Installing an app is a nightmare, takes forever and stalls the system. The whole thing with the system just force closing the browser just now was annoying... just opened a tab. I have 11 chrome tabs opened on my S3 and its handling it with out even blinking. I have 2 bench mark pics, one of my S3 (scored 4834) and the TF700T (5696). But this TF700T seems to get major hiccups and stalls. Not quite understanding what could be causing this. I have checked performance to be on, checked to see if there was some bloatware or un-needed apps that ran in the back ground (none), and installed adfree just incase type of thing.
Is this usuall? Or is there something i could try to make this perform like my S3 (basically no system hiccups and great processing speeds)?

No - assuming you are on CROMi-X 4.7 - this is not usual.
But to be able to give advice, we need to know a lot more specifics.
To flash Cromi-X you should be on bootloader version 10.6.1.14.4 or .8
You should have TWRP 2.5 or 2.6
What did you wipe in TWRP? Coming from CM you have to do a Factory Reset in TWRP prior to flashing CROMi-X.
The Aroma installer only wipes Cache and Dalvik - that is not enough.
Do a factory reset and reflash Cromi-X.
If that does not work, format data (under Wipe > Advanced), but backup everything you care about since this will wipe all your data. Then reflash Cromi-X

Re-Wiped/flashed again right after my post. Seems to be acting more - professional. I use(d) advance wipe both times and checked everything but the sd card as well as using the wipe in the ROM installer. Couple things i did differently on this run of it though was used the stock kernal. Last time i used the first on the list by _that. Both times i didnt use fsync option. This run also i didnt enter the gmail account right away on the setup wizard. I figured i would let the system settle in before installing apps. What sucks with that though is through the wizard the tablet will auto load the apps but entering them in after wards it never auto loaded the apps, no biggy though... prevented a lot of unwanted apps.
How risky is disabling the fsync? This is going to be a tablet that mainly will be used for like web browsing in desktop mode and netflix/youtubing. Not saying apps wont be ran but more or less a glorified netbook. Since its going to be touched by multiple users (as well as ones under the age of 4) what kindve actions could happen for data to start being jacked up by disabling fsync? Im still kindve put off by how i feel like my phone is a bit snappier than this table. Im thinking though its because the S3 is set with 2 gigs of RAM and the TF700T is 1 gig?
Quadrant Standard test results:
Samsung Galaxy S3 CM-10.1.2: Total-4742, CPU-5631, Mem-11200, I/O-4197, 2D-501, 3D-2180
TF700T CROMi 4.7: Total-5403, CPU-14135, Mem-3749, I/O-6503, 2D-570, 3D-2059
But all in all - A LOT better than what the stock was, better than CM 10.1.2 on tf700t and better than the last attempt of CROMi.
Do you guys have a pref on kernal? Fysnc disabled? Launcher? Browser (been using dolphin cause i can force desktop websites better than stock and chrome doesnt even have the option to force at all times)?

What sucks with that though is through the wizard the tablet will auto load the apps but entering them in after wards it never auto loaded the apps, no biggy though... prevented a lot of unwanted apps.
How risky is disabling the fsync? This is going to be a tablet that mainly will be used for like web browsing in desktop mode and netflix/youtubing. Not saying apps wont be ran but more or less a glorified netbook. Since its going to be touched by multiple users (as well as ones under the age of 4) what kindve actions could happen for data to start being jacked up by disabling fsync? Im still kindve put off by how i feel like my phone is a bit snappier than this table. Im thinking though its because the S3 is set with 2 gigs of RAM and the TF700T is 1 gig?
Quadrant Standard test results:
Samsung Galaxy S3 CM-10.1.2: Total-4742, CPU-5631, Mem-11200, I/O-4197, 2D-501, 3D-2180
TF700T CROMi 4.7: Total-5403, CPU-14135, Mem-3749, I/O-6503, 2D-570, 3D-2059
But all in all - A LOT better than what the stock was, better than CM 10.1.2 on tf700t and better than the last attempt of CROMi.
Do you guys have a pref on kernal? Fysnc disabled? Launcher? Browser (been using dolphin cause i can force desktop websites better than stock and chrome doesnt even have the option to force at all times)?

About the risk of Fsync, you can go to the Cromi X first post and read about it. _that explans the definition of Fsync by the end of the first post.
About the RAM, you are partially corrrect about it. The impotant thing about memory is how do you use it, not how much do have available. So you need to give your system a llittle more memory than the current setup in case your device needs it under a heavy load.
About your score, I believe that it is a little low for the custom rom and custom kernel. By looking at your score, you need to optimize your I/O and your memory in order to make it smooth and lag free.
About the kernel, it is a personal prefferences. I am using Hund at the moment and Fsync is disable. I am also using Apex and stock browser. I hope that helps..

The only way to optimize I/O though is to disable fsync at this point or are there other options that can be done?

Disable Fsync is a big boost in speed if you don't want to do it. You can try these out.
-Go to your init.d
-Open the 50CleanTWEAKS file and play around with the "read ahead buffer" with the optimal number for your I/O. This will optimize your read speed.
-add these on your data mount: discard data=write infront of the "/data" line. This will optimize your write speed.
Also, if you OC your CPU, you will see the increase in you I/O number.

Am I OK to install the CROMI X 4.7?
I need to flash the kernel also or not?

Yes, you are good to install the Cromi X 4.7. During the Cromi X installation, the rom will have a section for you to select a custom kernel. If you are a first time with custom rom and kernel, I suggest for you to use _that kernel without data2sd..

Thanks for all the great info but i think this unit is shotty. I disabled fsync, have chromix on there but it just doesnt feel like the specs on paper meet in person. It still gets balled up at times and our phones (samsung galaxy nexus & s3) seem to be snappier and less glitchy. they only thing i havent tried is the last suggestion about entering into int.d just because that was something new that i couldnt find much info about. Currently its sitting in a box now with a return label... kindve disappointed... wondering if i should get an ipad (mini) or note 8

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly but I will try... I don't know anything about the note 8 because I never own one. However, I currently own both ipad2 and tf700. I believed that ipad mini is using A5 chip which is the on ipad2. I can tell you the different between the two. I did compare a side by side on these units. In short, over all with a custom rom and kernel I would pick the tf700 over ipad2. I would pick the ipad2 if you are using the stock rom on the tf700. My tf700 is running a lot faster comparing with the ipad2... I don't understand why there are so much differences even though we are using the same hardwares and softwares.. I hope that helps clearing up a little bit. It is just my two cents. About the init.d, if you are using the same rom as I am, I don't have any problem sharing what I have wiht you..

Help Please, removing KatKiss 4.4.4 and Unrooting!?

Hi, . . . I'm a Noob to Rooting, get that out of the way.
I just bought a used ASUS TF101A with KB dock off EBay to replace mine that suffered a premature death in a flood. I was running (poorly) the last version of ICS, 4.03 If I recall. This one was advertised as "Excellent" and it is very clean but stinking of cigarette smoke, except that the jerk EBay seller failed to mention that was Rooted and running KatKiss 4.4.4 which I hate, the desktop is essentially blank, there are like 6 apps in the library and no Google Play access.
While I do want to install a "Factory Image" of KitKat 4.4.4 as if it was a OTA install, I want to get this awful KatKiss off, even it it means going back to a restored last version of ICS so I can even use this TF101, which it is completely useless in this state with katKiss.
Not being familiar at all with Rooting and Flashing, can someone please help and direct me on how to:
1 - Remove KatKiss and restore it to at least a full Factory install of ICS with all the original apps, Play access ... well like it wold have been.
2 - OR preferably, install a "street" Factory Image of normal KitKat 4.4.4 - Is that possible at all?

1. If you un-install KatKiss it will be a huge mistake. There is no better rom for the tf101 than it except for the 5.1.0 version. If you follow the direction word for word from the OP it can't be beat. Tim is also one of the nicest and most helpful devs that I know.
2. No, it's not possible.

There is no "Factory Image" of KitKat 4.4.4. the latest ASUS update was Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Android 4.0.3.
My opinion is that the KatKiss ROM KitKat 4.4.4 is the best you can install on your TF-101:

A clean install will most likely fix any concerns you may have on this ROM.
If you really want to downgrade to ICS, the easiest way will be to use Easy Flasher:

You will need to install the APX Drivers:

TF101 will need to be put into APX mode:
With the device off, hold down the volume up key and the power button at the same time for ~10-15 seconds. It will look like nothing happened but when you connect the cable from your TF101 to computer USB port the APX drivers will get recognized.
You really need to do some reading on the XDA forums before attempting to install anything on your TF101.
