Just bought a GS4 with Fido plan - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I just locked myself in to a 2yr agreement with Fido and bought a GS4 and very happy! im coming Rogers paying $45 a month for 150mb , 1000 minutes voicemail , free after 6 and free weekends, call display. and 1500 text messages. and had a galaxy nexus
I now pay same a month but i get 600mb of data / 400 minutes / Including long distance / Call id , voicemail/ Unlimted texting with pictures and video / free weekends and free after 6
And loving this phone so far! just on the fence on if i should root it or not.

Congrats and enjoy the phone, good job on the plan, though keep an eye out for promotions. I common one is 6 gigs for $30. If you see it, jump on it

I'll have to keep my eye on their site then . I also rooted my phone but have not changed the kernel yet. I think I'll wait for the Google edition ROM to be 100% working flawless with my 1337M gs4
But I'm am considering the CM rom

To give you an idea, $60/month gets me 300 daytime minutes, unlimited incoming, unlimited mobile to mobile, early evenings, 10 cents a minute ld, unlimited text, 6 gig data, call display, voicemail etc....
You really have to negotiate when you renew
I've been using the Google edition for the past few days. It's flawless, and that's coming from someone who has used nexus devices for the past two years, go for it now if I where you

I tried to neogiatee with rogrs and they didn't budge, so I said screw you then (13 yrs, of service) so I went fido. I know rogers owns them so I knew I was getting good coverage.
Also I'll do the Google edition but I need to fig out how to backup this phone entirely and then flash it
And do you lose the gestures stuff?

you can get much better then that, I've got $75/month-unlimited north America,2gb data, voice, caller id + Europe long distance discount included, they have lots of options but you need to talk to customer service not the general guys that pick up the line.you gotta push them a bit

Congratulations on your purchase, the S4 is a sweet phone!

Is there a guide on how to backup the stock kernal/ROM and how to Flash to like CM10.1 or Google on a Canadian Fido SGH-1337M
Im assuming its not as easy as it was with the Galaxy Nexus

It's a little mixed in through the threads. You will want to start by using Odin to flash a custom recovery, then you will want to use that custom recovery to do a nandroid back up, then you user that recovery to flash a custom Rom.
You can always use kies or Odin to return to stock as long as you can get into download mode. Since you are on the Canadian variant, you have an unlocked bootloader, so you can skip the Loki

Did you opt for Fido's phone insurance plan when you renewed?

Nah i didnt opt for there warranty for extra $10 a mnth, im always careful with my devices and i never had a issue with any cell phone i used. Plus i got it in a otterbox defender case.
600mb of Data is great for me as i dont do too much while on a Carriers tower. Im mostly in Wi-Fi areas and connect to that whenever i get the chance.
Data for me is great to have just in emergency situations. Like a GPS or to find a store location while driving and E-mail

I opted for the insurance plan just in case something does happen to my phone while I am traveling or worst case scenario, I drop it and it shatters.
I used to have a 150mb data plan with Fido a couple months ago and it wasn't too bad since I had wifi practically everywhere but I switched to the 6gb when they offered me a pretty good deal.

Are there are precautionary measures I can do before switching to a different kernal and ROM? Like a full backup of the stock so I have it for a just in case scenario ?

Learn how to use Odin, then download the stock image for your carrier (it's in a thread somewhere). With this, as long as you can get into download mode, you will be golden. I would also back up the efs folder

Flashing Roms eating up data?

Hey everyone,
So before i got the galaxy i was on an unlimited plan so i was never paranoid about my data usage. I had to switch to Verizon's new plan and i had to give up unlimited data. I purchased 4 gigs a month thinking that this should be more than sufficient. I was on the iphone before and i would usually use up around 1.7 gigs a month. I just checked my usage and i am at 2.44 gigs and still 16 days left on my cycle. I dont use my data too much. I do stream pandora and iheartradio but not much more than i did with the iphone. I know when i flash a rom it erases everything and then every app has to be re-installed. Every time i flash i make sure i am connected to wifi before i start to re-download the apps. Has anyone else noticed high data usage after flashing a few times? I may have to stop flashing for 16 days and keep my data cutoff, that was built into android, set. Anyone else without unlimited notice high data usage after flashing a few times. Even unlimited users, have you guys ever checked your usage. Let me know, thanks.
*Note - At work and home (where i spend my entire life) i am connected to wifi.
Are you making use of Google Backup/Restore services?
When a "fresh install" starts up & you enter in your Google account information, the restore functionality usually tries to kick in transparently in the background. At that point in time, it's entirely plausible that you haven't added any wifi information yet, so it's pulling app data down over the air.
That's the only possible cause I can think of?
I haven't checked mine lately but I always stop play from auto installing and use titanium backup. There have been a few times where the play store would auto restore before I was connected to WiFi.

Download the ROMS on wifi. Flash and restore when you are on wifi. Don't use the google backup service unless you will be on wifi for the next, say hour to be safe, or restore locally with Titanium.
Thanks for the input. With my last rom I didn't use my Google setup on the initial boot up. I went and turned wifi on and then added my Google account. I'll try removing Google backup and I'm gonna use titanium backup to see if I have any changes.

I'm about to hit 6GB with 1 day left in the billing cycle but that includes downloading a few different versions of cm9/cm10 and about 10 rom flashes/full google restores all on 4G LTE. Luckily I still have unlimited or I'd have to be a lot more careful.

Do you download everything off network and flash multiple roms? 20 gigs lot. Your lucky your unlimited cause Verizon would charge $15 per gig over your limit

Going from iPhone to S3 very smart
Giving up your precious unlimited data for that awful 4GB plan, not so much.
You probably would have been better off buying it outright and keeping unlimited in the long run when you factor in monthly savings. Hindsight obviously.
As far as flashing using data, make sure when you flash a new ROM not to use backup assistant, and don't let the rom restore from google. If it does, it will try to pull all of your apps from the market, which can use significant data.

Off topic but here is the story on how i came upon this planned. I had the iphone 4s with verizon and i was in an unlimited plan. I had the iphone for a while and i got bored, i missed the good old days on android and rooting. I saw the new evo lte that i kinda wanted so i cancelled my verizon plan early, termination fee was $175 but i sold the iphone and got $400 for it. I went to sprint and bought the evo from my friend who works at sprint. He gave me the employee discount where i got unlimited everything and the phone for $200 all for $55 a month with insurance. The deal was amazing. The service with sprint not so much. I found that the phone was pretty much useless unless i connected to wifi, thats how bad it was for me. So, i read reviews on the s3 and the phone looked amazing. What i decided to do was cancel with sprint. I cancelled on day 13 of 14 so no fees, i just returned phone and i was a happy camper. I went back to verizon and told them that i wasnt happy with sprint. They were nice enough to keep my contract for 30 days in case i wanted to return. So i went out and bought the galaxy s3 at full price, went to verizon and told them i'd like to reinstate my contract. I called over 5 times to make sure that my unlimited plan would still be available and everyone said it will be. As soon as i get to verizon they tell me that they cant give me unlimited anymore. When i talked to a head houncho on the phone he told me that what those 5 other people told me is not true and that they didnt know, only he and his deptartment had the final call on whether i can get unlimited or not. And he said no. So i ended up switching to 4 gigs, which i thought was enough but it isnt. I pretty much broke even on the monthly pay because its shared so i added my ipad to my plan for $10 extra. If i kept the ipad on its own plan then its $30 extra. Everything worked out nicely on paper but now even with 4 gigs a month i'm still watching what i do. I was dumb for switching and going through the hassle. What made things worse was when i got the phone they locked the bootloader, kinda like a spit in the face. Anyway thats my long story.
I removed google backup, did everything on titanuim. I'm gonna flash again and see how much data i lose. I shouldnt lose any but i'll find out

I too have noticed an insane amount of data. I'm always on wifi in my apartment and use the phone the same as my old iPhone. Today I looked and every month I'd use about 300 to 500 MB of data on my iPhone and I'm halfway through the month on my s3 with 2gb used. I don't know what's going on.

I can confirm that when I moved into a warranty replacement phone that all the apps where downloaded from the 4G network before I had WiFi setup. Once WiFi got setup it switched and did the little bit of the remainder over WiFi. So its not just custom ROMs.
Watch for picasa syncing, some have reported that it will eat a ton of data.

When u upgrade call back and tell them u want your unlimited data plan back. You can do this under the Worry free customer exchange policy. You must call within the first 14 days. I was made aware if this by a Verizon rep. It only can be done over the phone. ANY QUESTIONS PM ME

I just upgraded yesterday and my verizon wireless account already reflects the new phone and new data plan. What hasn't updated is the phone minutes (forced into share anything). My wifes phone still shows $30 for unlimited data. I found out I could have stayed with unlimited 4G LTE if I didn't get a new subsidized phone, but since we use less than 1gb per month (heavy on home wifi use) we're saving about 30 per month. This december we can ditch a dummy line I used to get an upgrade a year ago, and my total bill will come to $50 than what we were paying for the unlimited data \ 1400 family plan, so I can't really complain.
I just want to make a couple points here. (I still have unlimited data and signed a new contract in july)
Firstly, always stand your ground. Now that phones are unlockable and usable with any carrier, the worst thing they can hear is you've decided to break the contract and go to another company.
Secondly, you're paying $30 dollars for data.Think about this for a second. You're paying $30 to your carrier by force, and they try to steer you toward using WiFi as much as possible. If you're going to provide me a service, provide it to me. Don't take my money and then tell me to get my service from somewhere else.
My account still shows unlimited as well as showing my new phone and I upgraded well past the cut off date.
The second it changes I'm going to call and raise hell. Mainly on the grounds that when I upgraded through a Best Buy Mobile Site the only option I was given was to keep my same plan. "So I never had any idea" and was never told I would lose unlimited data. LOL. Of course I will also play the "well if I'm going to be sprung with serious changes to my contract with no warning then I will be going to a new carrier immediately" card if I have to. Who knows maybe I will get lucky. However, until it changes on its own I'm letting sleeping dogs lie and I suggest anyone else in the same boat do the same.

Yea, I called in but the rep I spoke to confirmed that I would be able to keep unlimited. She said she had to upgrade it to the 2gb plan but then she went right back in and reverted it back to the old plan. It doesn't sound like your rep did that and you might see the plan change when this cycle ends, that's probably when the phone model will update as well. I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered this wed. but the same rep is supposed to call on wed afternoon to activate so I'll confirm again. Also my cycle ends tomorrow so I should be able to see any changes to my account.
I asked the Verizon employee very specifically about keeping my unlimited data. If I did not use the upgrade and brought my own phone in, I could keep my unlimited data. Test being said, our total bill for three phones was $170. The new share everything plan ended up being cheaper at $150 per month.

How many gb did you get? I have 2 smart phones and on 3g it added up to 6-8 gb a month, I think on 4g it will easily hit 12+ gb.

I have purchased the wifi 10.1, should I have gotten a carrier operated one?

Ok so Ive purchased the wifi operated one for my pops. Hes old and is always back and forth on his microsoft laptop so I figured this would make things a lot easier for him. He likes it so far. He currently has a verizon flip phone that is hooked up on Page Plus. Im not sure how the carrier operated ones work or what they do, can someone explain so I can have a better understanding so I then can figure out if I should return and get him the carrier operated one.
1) Im assuming you can pop a sim card in and pay for a plan but can you make phone calls like a cell phone?
2) is this wifi tablet that he currently have able to make wifi calls atleast?
3) I cant talk him into a smartphone so he will probably never make calls with a carrier based tablet, but he may want to have a data connection continuously when out and about. So im guessing getting a carrier based one would be necessary for this.
4) again, he has a verizon flip phone running on page plus which uses verizons towers, do they make a samsung verizon galaxy tab 2 or just sprint and at&t?
5) I was also considering the galaxy tablet note but baby steps for the old man lol....but I thought he might use the tv/tablet function.......but probably not, too much explaining lol
Any info to clear some things up would be great please.....I only have 15 days to return it.

No, these are not phones, with a carrier operated on you can send text. But you can download a app called TextMe so send text free using wifi or data.

Yes it would, other wise he has to be close to a wifi to surf the web, but wifi is in a lot of places, it would depend how good is he at connecting to other wifi's.

I love my GT2 10.1" It's connected to AT&T because that is my carrier. The Verizon one I have cost me $30 a month. (I think they got rid of the tab only plan and jammed shared data down their customers throat. So it cost $40 a month.

No, these are not phones, with a carrier operated on you can send text. But you can download a app called TextMe so send text free using wifi or data.
It could but it wasn't deigned for that, but at least the GT2 has front speakers. I did it once, but it was hard on the people I called to hear me.
Yes it would, other wise he has to be close to a wifi to surf the web, but wifi is in a lot of places, it would depend how good is he at connecting to other wifi's.
I believe Verizon has the GT2 too. I know they have the original because I just sold mine.

Yea man, thanks a lot. So basically if I did decide to get the verizon one, he may be able to use his same plan for data?
And while we are on the subject, how the heck do I get his contact off his senior flip phone to a new google account? If he still had verizon, they woukd be synced with verizon and I can grab the .csv file from there site and import in google, but now that he has page plus(verizon towers still), im not sure if he can access the verizon backup site...is there another way without inputting manually?

The international unlocked P3100 version has phone call feature. I'm debating getting this tablet for that feature since my Nexus 7 3G doesn't have it, but there's seems to be less development and the spec and screen resolution isn't as good. Although I do like having microSD slot since even the 32GB on the Nexus 7 isn't enough to hold my craps. People must like this thing a lot since I can't even find used ones for sale. Wouldn't mine more feedbacks from P3100 owners.
Also I'm confused about the carrier bands of this model, GSMArena posted:
HSDPA 900 / 2100 - GT-P3100
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - GT-P3105
However I read the contrary from Amazon reviews. Can someone confirm does the P3100 version work with ATT and/or TMobile 3G? Otherwise I'll have to pass on it.

I don't know about Page Plus, and how they operate. Sounds like a prepaid account. I only use post paid, because even though prepaid my be cheap for the individual, it could get pricey for a family plan. Personally I think you should have him check out the Note 2. It is big, I owned it for a while, but if I wanted a big phone I could use as a tablet (It even comes with a S-Pen) I would use it. I am not sure how Verizon handles the contacts.
If the flip phone has something called send vcard you can do that with his contacts and then in his google account on a computer import the vcards to his contacts,I did it with my work phone they supplied me

Yea maybe once he gets used to the way the android system works he will make the switch, but he may hate it cause of the battery on these smartphones.

Ok, ill check it out. Im not sure what vcard is. If I do find it in his phone, where woukd it be located? Is it software or is it an actual sd card or something. Once found do u need to plug the phone into a pc, not sure if he has data plan on his phone to send wirelessly. Thanks guys.

Got it to work using blue tooth. Sent the contacts right to my phone, synced to google, then signed in to google on the tablet and it worked like a charm.....nice. Pops is chillen now. Oh and I got it to send and receive calls on wifi.....the speakers work pretty good when on a call and quality is reasonable on both ends of call.

They are providing at&t service again, but you wont get LTE and tethering is forbidden on at&t whereas the T-Mobile ones aren't restricted on tethering.
A provider that sucks plus a service that sucks balls.Period....
Bad voice quality, no account usage history, unknown data limits, no voice or video streaming, no YouTube, no Pandora,no tethering, no technical support and idiot customer care reps who don't speak English ... oh wait, you can get throttled for using few hundreds of megs of data, and still throttled even in next month cycle...Want some more ?
IBTL by the way....

I can't speak specifically to Straight Talk, but can to Net10 which is virtually the same thing and all those streaming and video services work just fine, YouTube, Pandora, Netflix, SiriusXM, GoogleVideo, Play Music, etc. all function just fine onNet10 AT&T SIM on the Skyrocket.

Depends on the SIM you ordered and the version you have of Skyrocket... If it is an AT&T Skyrocket and you get a StraightTalk AT&T SIM, or If you have a T-Mobile Skyrocket and get a T-Mobile ST SIM, then you do not have to unlock. If you have a Rogers SGH-i727R or something, or trying use a T-Mobile StraightTalk SIM in an AT&T Skyrocket, then you would have to unlock.

Thanks. It would probably be an AT&T Skyrocket model (I currently have an AT&T Captivate with a bad gps) with my current Straighttalk AT&T Sim.
Im not worried about the steps of unlocking it since I already tracked the instructions down for that just wondering if I would need to.
the new Straight talk att sim DOES enable LTE. Just changed 4 days ago. Requires a new sim to get the LTE tho even if you already use ST ATT.
Yep, just ordered mine. They are having a sale 6.99 with free over nite shipping. You do have to select over nite shipping in order to get shipping free. LTE is advertised. I'm currently using the E71 SIM in my skyrocket. I just wanted to go legit.
Edit: Also, don't forget to put "hipri" in the "APN Type" along with the default, supl, mms. I always put it in there just because but saw no real difference until today. The towers I'm always connected to must not be that congested because I always got good service. Flashed the new AOKP ROM and forgot to add it. Well I was in the city today and couldn't get hardly anywhere with facebook or here at XDA. Added the "hipri" and wow, instant gratification. Facebook loaded like I was on wifi as well as these forums. Will update again once my new sim card gets here.
Also I wanted to add that I have no problems viewing youtube, iheart radio and whatever else a previous poster mentioned. Been with straightalk 2 years now and not once have I had any trouble with any app with them. If you just keep your daily bandwidth under 150 megs and your monthly less than 2 gigs, you should be fine.

I don't know what you're smoking, but I've had ST on my Captivate (and now my Skyrocket) and have never had an issue. I stream Rdio and backup my photos on Google. No issues at all.
I can do Hangouts, Skype, and other services. The voice quality is rather good. I also stream YouTube and tether (rarely).
I would suggest installing CM10.2 for the Skyrocket. It runs really well and has built-in tethering. You also get to update your phone to Android 4.3 instead of being stuck on 4.1.2.

[DISCUSSION] - Moving Verizon S9+ to T-Mobile

I decided to move from VZW to T-Mo! Woooot!
First I will share my experience with the setup and porting of my new accounts then talk about using a VZW Phone on a T-Mo line. Yeah, I know there are couple of these threads already but they are somewhat old and unmonitored.
The transition went smooth but seemed to take almost 1.5 hours in the T-Mo store! I thought that was kinda excessive! I think the employee that was helping us was new. She didn't know much, couldn't explain anything, and kept going to her manager with every simple question I asked. Its all good, new employees have to learn! So I was fine with that aspect of the switch. It was a Sunday afternoon with nothing else going on.
They moved me from a 24GB Plan on VZW to the T-Mo One Military plan. I then added the $10.00 advanced data package on our phones. Its nice not worrying about overages and NOT paying an arm and leg for the data plan!
So my VZW bill went from about $350 to $150.00 on T-Mo. In all fairness I do have device payments on VZW, but moved those phones to save money. Will pay them off on the final bill. Still pretty happy with this! The device payments accounted for $80.00 of the VZW Bill. So I am still saving about $120.00 a month.
So now onto the service aspect.... Over all T-Mo, in FARGO ND, cant compete with Verizon! Not at all. Oh well, not too worried, I get decent coverage and "fair" data speeds.
At home, T-Mo gets about 10 megs down and 2 megs up. This was about the same speed Verizon had before they upgraded whatever tower was near my house. So, ok, at home, data sucks. No biggie, I have decent home internet package and to be quite frank, I never use my phone when I am home. I have so many gadgets with bigger screens to surf with.
At Work, Both Verizon and T-Mo get the same, 5 to 10 down and 1 to 5 up. Oh well. I can say that T-Mo is more reliable in this specific building for data when you are near a window, which I am. However, when you go into the building, where there are no Windows, T-Mo drops its data pretty low. We are talking about EDGE data. Verizon speeds would drop but not as drastic as the T-Mo. All in all I would say at work everything is equal.
Have not been around town much but when driving to work today I was using speedtest.net along the way. In general, Verizon beets T-Mo all the way from home to work.
So, now that I am a T-Mo customer with a Verizon phone I realized that there was going to be a minor learning curve. I cant get Advanced Calling features such as WiFi Calling, HD Calling, and Simultaneous Talk and Text! I knew something like what would happen because of difference in carrier implementation of those services. No biggie there. I understand that I would only need to flash the USERDATA partition to transform my VZW to a T-Mo s9+. Can anyone confirm that?
Also, I heard that the latest T-Mo update is hosed and not being pushed to the phone. I am currently on Verizon build ARE6 Dated Mid May 2018. I am not sure of the boot loader versions but I am thinking I should be able to go back one build on the T-Mo build and flash it. Hopefully. Anyone know about this?
Right now, I am at work, and I was wondering, was anyone able to turn on the advanced calling on Verizon Firmware without flashing USERDSATA? Also, those of you that made this switch with this phone, did you flash the T-Mo USERDATA? I was actually thinking about flashing the International Snap Dragon or the US Unbranded Snapdragon ROM on this phone instead of T-Mo. Did anyone do that? What sort of drawbacks did you have?

You'll need to wait until the U1 rom gets updated to bootloader V2. You'll need to successfully flash to the unlocked without Sim, then flash the Tmobile specific files with the Tmobile Sim in.

Wow! Thats crazy good. WE dont have Comcast here and I can assure that CableOne and Midcontitennt cable will not be offering cell service anytime soon! Hell, we barely have a decent selection of HD channels. The big cable company doesnt even have Comedy Central.
I live in Fargo man. We dont have options. We just take what we can get, lol
And an update to anywho who may have read this...
The U1 v2 Bootloadder for th eunlocked device is now available thanks to @bboii86
The thread is here: //G965U1 XAA\\ Stock Odin Files Firmware G965U1UES2ARF4
I flashed this and I am totally Verizon free now! When the phone booted up it asked to reboot so it could provision the phone with the SIM (T-Mo).
When i did it came back up and WiFi calling was enabled.

I'm a bit lost on what to do (first samsung phone ever), could you go trough the steps you performed?
Did you had to change the CSC at all?
Thanks!

No, I did not do a CSC change. I only flashed the U1 firmware linked in the prior post.
I let it factory reset, the phone booted, told me it needed to reboot to adjust features for the SIM and then it came back up a second time. Walked through set up and everything worked fine.
If you are new to Samsung then you need to get familiar with an app for your PC called Odin. Its the too that is used to flash factory firmware to Samsung devices. There are tons of tutorials on how to use Odin so I wont bother with a walk through.
And one last follow up.
I have now flashed the T-MO ARF4 update and have ALL the T-Mobile Features. When I call I get the "HD+" icon now.
