I keep receiving a message saying my phone is ready for a software update, I keep deferring the update but it keeps coming back every few hours. I'm rooted and do not want to lose root. Is there anyway to permanently defer the update so the message will not pop up again?
Thanks for your help.

You could run an app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper once you update, you should still have root.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. So do I check all the boxes, click protect root, then manually force the OTA update?

It did keep root, but it said update failed (although it seems to have updated some things). At least I still have root. Thanks!
I dont know if this applies to you but the last time I did this I was able to keep root access but it locked my bootloader and I lost my custom recovery. Just check it to make sure.

Since you're rooted, you can easily get rid of that. If you're comfortable using an app like root explorer, navigate to 'system/app/SDM.apk' and either delete it or rename it to 'SDM.apk.bak' and reboot.
Or use Titanium Backup and freeze SDM.apk and reboot.

After seeing postings about a Verizon Galaxy S III update yesterday, I checked using "About device -> Software update" in Settings this morning.
A 30 MB download started and the update completed in about 5 minutes. Software Update says it was an update from LF2 to LG7.
Yeah and kills universal search and you cant disable the remote diagnostics if youre stock and not rooted.
Also several users have confirmed it will break root. They all were stock rooted with stock recovery.

I am on the Stock rom, rooted and bootloader unlocked Using Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, EZ-Unlock, and CWM. Re-Locked bootloader, disabled root, took the update. After the update completed, CWM asked to disable the new boot image, selected yes. Rebooted, got a message saying the update failed, however it installed and I am at I535VRLG7. I was able to restore root, and unlock bootloader without any problem..
How do I keep the phone from taking the update?

Did you unlock your bootloader? If so did you read the BIG WARNING?if not go back and read it. Generally once you root you don't want to give vzw a chance to unroot you. If you unlocked your bootloader It could brick your phone.
So generally don't take ota updates! You wait for the devs to check them out First and modify them for us.
As far as i Can tell this ota just takes stuff away from us And installs some vzw remote access crap. ( with that on your phone you will have to go back to stock if you just call customer support for help)

The update itself has useful stuff (a new radio which fixes no sim issues), but we have that already and it should just be flashed by itself, imo.
Well got my first no sim with the radio epic fail.. So much for fixing that maybe just a push to get that bootloader relocked

Did you do it via OTA or flashed the radio? I'm hoping you flashed invisiblek's in Odin. That one was actually the wrong version.

Flash the CWM version. invisiblek accidentally bundled the previous radio in the Odin package. Not sure if it's updated yet.

Yes. People pull the downloaded ota and your can flash it in stock recovery. I have the lg7 update straight from Verizon if you want it. I think it only works on lf2. If your on lg1 I think you need a different one.
Edit: I'm going into work so I'm gonna post it for you just in case your welcome. This is not modified in any way whatsoever.

If you're stock and not rooted, you should be getting updates over the air from Verizon, you don't need to apply them manually.

I am not trying to be rude but did you read my original post? When I try to update OTA I get a popup saying "Service Unavailable" It's like my phone isn't connecting to Verizon's servers to get the OTA. So I need to apply them manually, unfortunately...if possible

Sorry, I missed that. As long as you aren't rooted and haven't otherwise messed with the phone at all, I'd go ahead and call Verizon and see what they can do. You should be getting updates OTA and if you are not through no fault of your own, it's their responsibility to fix it, especially with the huge security hole that was found in these phones recently.
I had a VW S3 that wasn't receiving the update for OTA and when I talked to the rep he said to use Kies. Kies does say that it will update your phone but I had a problem connecting it. The only way the app will update is if you have your phone connected through USB. I tried and tried and tried but I couldn't get the computer to see my phone in the Kies program to sync it. It would connect through WiFi real quick.

Give Samsung a call because on the website it does away that Kies will update your software over USB.

All i know is that you could odin back to a rootable build, and then reroot and install the rooted version of the latest from here
If anybody knows an easier way feel free to share
Like others below me said, use this method here
Yeah just re root. You don't have to Odin back. The new build can still be rooted just like the other ones.

OTA will always break root but eventually it will not only break root but also break unlock exploits regardless of any app. Ask the EVO 4G LTE guys who are now stuck with locked bootloader.

I updated my phone to Jellybean. I used OTA rootkeeper to keep root. I then restored root using the same app. After doing this, I don't really have root. In OTA rootkeeper, it says that the device is rooted but the "root permission granted" box is not checked. Anything I can do to recover root without having to flash a custom recovery or do a full data wipe on my phone? Thanks in advance!
