Increase IR Blaster Range by at least 4x! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I love the IR blaster feature, but sadly could only get a measly 5-6 feet of range with it. I deliberated over a solution, and finally I found one! Now I can get 30 feet. It will probably get more range, but that's as far away from the TV I could get!
I am currently using an OtterBox Defender case but it should work for any other case.
I used "Sally Hansen No Chip Acrylic Top Coat" on the inside of the slot where the IR blaster is. Clarification: I did not apply any to the device itself and would not recommend it. I only applied to the interior of the cone shaped cut out on the OtterBox. It made it much more reflective, but it is hardly noticeable because It is inside the hole. I put 2-3 coats on and let it dry and then put it all back together. It took 10 minutes at most. I was very careful to not get any on any other part of the case.
Check out the picture below. Let me know if it works for anybody else, it certainly did for me.:good::good::good:

Not on the IR blaster itself. I did not put any on the device itself for that matter, I am unsure what would happen if you did that! I only put it on the interior of the cone shaped hole on the OtterBox case. I think you might have the Commuter Series.
I edited my original to clear that up, sorry for the confusion.

mine works fine (nude device) for 30 feet indoors and around 20 in bright light (ir washout). you could drill the ir blaster hole in your case wider as well. ir is wide spectrum, so it diffuses easily and readily, anything that would cut down or narrow the field is bad (ie case that insets the IR blaster too far) and sounds like what you did is built a small lens out of acrylic on the inside of the case, which would work fine. a dome shape on the outside would work best.

I never was able to get any range over 6-7 feet from the nude device. I almost dismissed it as a gimmick. That's so strange.

Mine works well. I could control any TVs in line of sight in the restaurant. I could say they were well ovet 20 ft away from me.
Just in case, I peeled all the bumper stickers(side plastic clear films) around my phone. Maybe one of those clear film is covering on top of IR eye?

check one out in a store (best buy is where i would try it) and try against yours; if range doesnt match warranty it. GF's didnt go over 15 feet and her new red one does 30 feet almost the exact same as mine.

That seems like it's defective. Mine works fine from 20+ feet, although it won't spread as well as a "real" remote control would so you have to be sure that it's pointed directly at the IR sensor on the device.

Sorry for an age old bump, but I bought a defender case just to try this out ! I'll post results once I get a chance to test it .

If you have nothing better to do...

i scratched off the matte finish on the metal cover and it revealed a very stunning undercoat. I think it looks much better. I used an expired credit card to scratch it off. do not use anything metal to scratch it off, it will leave a scratch on the undercoat.
Done on a white mt4g. i think the different colored mt4g have a darker back cover.
Also it takes a very long time to do.
Pictures were taken with flash off because it shines that much.

it has a lot more grip but it does collect more oils from your hand
Hmmmm....I think I may do this in the next couple of days. I'm also wondering how it may turn out if I use my dremel to create a brushed look...decisions decisions.
I'm not sure if you want to do this, if u look next to you sd card theres a gold contact that touches the inside of the battery cover. So the coating my be a barrier between the metal and our hands to prevent signal issues i.e. Iphone 4 like signal issues. Anyone who's tried this confirm either way? I love the look just don't want to regret it later.
Did you just rub the edge of the card on it for hours? Because I've been doing it for a couple minutes and I don't think it's getting me anywhere.

If you look on the underside of the cover, the spot on the cover which touches that contact is etched away. This is to ensure contact is made without obstruction. So there is no "barrier" between the cover and this contact. Just the opposite. My guess is that it is a ground circuit to divert static electricity. Since the cover is made of metal, this would make sense. Scratching off the outer dullcoat should not have any negative effect.

Chrome coming off/peeling off kickstand

Anyone else have this happening? The chrome is starting to come off my kickstand on the side where you lift it up on the edge. Its really minor now, but if it continues to do this it might bother me in the future as of now its not to noticeable.
Mine has it both on the side and a portion of the top of it. It looks really bad and is very annoying.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Yup, I've got a little spot on mine that's beginning to peel. Actually, mine's not the chrome, so much, but more like the "brushed" part. It's actually shinier under the spot that's peeled off.
I don't really care at this point. I might if it gets much worse.
Do you guys use your kickstand alot? Just wanted to know if this just peels off anyways or so? Cause I would like to avoid it but if its an avoidable then nevermind.
Sucks If it peels off no matter what you do then kinda screws you out of exchanging to get a new one from big red since their warranty has gotten tighter even doh this isn't your fault. Its the build quality.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Mines peeling too. If you use the kickstand then its gonna peel...
I'm not saying you guys are doing anything wrong, but I try to be real careful with my kickstand, like when I pull it out I make sure I really get under it so my fingernail doesn't scrape the edge and peel. I can see on the very tip where it could eventually start to peel if I'm not careful.
If it ever get's real bad I'm sure something can be done to make it look better cosmetically.
Give it some time and I'm sure it'll look just like this.

trick to it, cut a piece or tape, not huge at all, just to go on the bottom edge of it... and put it there. That or stop laying your phone on hard surfaces when you put the kickstand down. Bingo.
I've only used the kickstand once, and the spot its coming off is along the long edge that doesn't touch any surface.

i use my stand a lot and dont notice any peeling or scratching. i dont really care what color it is as long as it stays sturdy and useful. this coming from a guy with a lime green case tho
Mines coming off slightly, but not from using the kickstand for viewing. I've been using my kickstand only in portrait stance, but the part that's peeling doesnt touch any surface. I believe its just from opening the kickstand.
That said, I recently bought a skinomi full body shield, put a piece over the kickstand and the peeling hasn't continued for now.

[TIP] Avoid camera scrathes

So the first thing I found when I bought this phone is that the camera is sticking out of the back of the phone a bit too much. It looks nice, but it gets scratched if you're addicted to wearing jeans. So I saw a spare screen protector laying around so I thought of this and just wanted to share.
Use a hole punch. Here is what I did.
1. Cut a screen protector in a strip ( not necessary its just my hole punch sucks at hole punching)
2. Punch a hole. ( if your hole punch is like mine take off the other layer of the screen protector so it actually punches a clean hole).
3. Clean up the camera and apply the protector. ( it won't fill the camera hole completely but it covers the part that the camera uses to "see" out of.
4. Enjoy a scratch free camera!
Pictures: ( the last ones are just to show that pictures still turn out fine...even with terrible resizing.)

Meh. This is my 5th HTC device, and I've never put any in a case. Just a personal preference, of course. But I think its a bit silly that so many people like to keep their phone in a case in order to keep the phone exterior in nice condition, when they never see the exterior or the phone (its always covered by the case).
If you switch devices frequently, and the objective is to keep the phone in good condition for resale, that I can see. But that is also something I've never done. I still own every smartphone I've ever bought!

yeah for me cases ruin the beauty of any phone (except for the iphone...cases actually make it look better). The reason people probably wouldn't have thought of this is because most people dont have screen protectors sitting around. The only reason i have them is because i bought the phone at Costco and they gave me 2 "universal" (aka piece of *#%) ones that i wasn't going to use anyway.

Ionic Guardian case still 75% off at Amazon

This case is still on sale on Amazon at around $15 incl delivery. Quite a few people have reported delivery issues (delays, cancelations, etc) but from what I've seen the people that have the case are pleased. Just so you know the case cones in two pieces (thanks All__fun). I think if someone wants a cheap but theoretically durable case, this is a good starting point. If you don't mind waiting.
It is nice and well made. It is definitely the bulkiest case I've had as of yet. Also it's difficult to charge using the lg wcp700. It works but has to be put on the charger precisely.[/QUOTE]
All__fun said:
let me just add,
That after having the phone with no case for about a week now,
adding this case truly adds girth to the phone.
Previously the phone would slide easily in and out of my pocket,
you can't tell in the picture, but the case is actually a 2 piece case, a soft inner case, that the phone slides into, and a hard outer cover that gives the phone it's design. (the white, black, pink, or blue distinction.)
This is probably the best case out right now for the phone, but I can't stress enough how thick and bulky the phone is now. If you are willing to sacrifice it's sleek design, this case offers good protection.
I don't have a screen protector on right now, so I cannot add whether or not this peels off or interferes with the protector.
I will also add that with the Ionic case on, when looking at the lock screen, I find it more difficult to swipe left and right between different lock screens. I have a screen lock pattern, and that registers my finger strokes rather than a swipe to a different lock screen.

UPDATE:
I would have to give the case a 8.5/10
Cons:
*Hard to connect headphone jacks, the case makes it impossible to reach (It may work for the apple and samsung headphones, haven't tried it. Only tried the beats cable).
*It does block signal somewhat.
*Makes the phone heavier, but not that much.
*The Sticky material to connect the screen on the case is not as great. After taking it off and putting it back on; the stickiness goes away. They do supply you with 1 more pack of stickies(includes 4, one each corner) but what happens when it's done? You're on your own.
Pros:
*Very stylish
*Comes with a screen protector and an aluminum button.
*Protects the phone all around.
*Not cheap material.
*Makes the S4 look like another phone.
Looks cool.
Hmm... I think they are trying too hard to look like the iPhone 5...
Also, this is a Faraday cage. It will kill reception.
I dont like how it looks like a perfect rectangle
don't think that will protect much because the transfer of stress impact will be almost directly transferred to the phone with little absorption unless there is some padding inside of it, which I doubt.
Here's a clickable link so people don't have to copy and past.

Wow , that looks unique and good. I'm always buying cases and skins to make my phones standout from everyone else's.
I'm not 100% sold on the rectangle, but it's different. So I like

Don't get this. I returned it to the seller after it completely obliterated my wireless signal. Wifi AND cellular signal. Looks cool but not worth the trade off.
Also, it looks more like HTC one than the iphone
Yeah pretty sure it's gonna kill every kind of signal trying to get in and out of that box. It does look pretty cool in my opinion though.

Dammit lol, I ordered this case, and they shipped it out. I guess if it really does destroy the signal I'm going to return it.

any updates on this case? i'm interested in getting it; can anyone speak to how much it affects signal/gps/wifi or post pics? i've used a metal case before and my signal has been fine, so i'm wondering if this will be any different.
For the love of god do not buy this, it will shield your device from receiving/transmitting any signals.

but i'm currently using a metal case that i have had no problems with...? the only difference is there's no gorilla glass cover; will that make that big of a difference?

Well glass isn't conductive but still you will have signal attenuation (Signal loss) due to the casing.

Like I said, I had this case for a grand total of 2 days. It completed screwed up my signal strength and wifi strength and I presume GPS too.
It's up to you whether you want to believe me or not but my advice, don't get it.
Also, this case requires the removal of the battery door.

LOL, although aluminum/metal cases can look really good, they've always been plagued with this issues. I had 2 of them from my S3 and it was ridiculous. Terrible cell/data reception and GPS. SO i totally have to agree

I am using this case for a month now,i am having no issues with connectivity or GPS.
The screen loses some sensitivity though. I am not sure if this will be same for everyone.

I want to say taht you probably are having some signal loss, if not complete. It's a faraday cage and physics doesn't make exceptions.
dang thats pretty terrible imo
Forget the phone, I would feel bad for the floor if this thing lands on its corner.
