[Q] HELP! With HTC SENSATION XE [newb alert!] - General Questions and Answers

First of all, greetings from India to all you peeps out there! Please bear with me and help me with this problem. I totally realize how much of an utter fool I am for asking such trivial questions.
So coming down to the point
I decided to install custom firmware on my brothers HTC Sensation XE since it had run out of warranty and as a precursor to mod my own phone which I recently purchased (Sony Xperia Z).
So after reading for a good 3-4 hours finally found a site good enough to make me understand STEP BY STEP (sorry XDA!) on how to go about booting the phone, unlocking bootlocker, making a custom recovery etc etc. LINK BELOW (aah crap as a new user I can't post links yet
This is the site
Google "How To Load a Custom ROM on an Android Device" by David Cogen on theunlockr dot com
I am stuck at being unable to install any custom mod. I put the zip file in the root folder by opening my SD card as a disk drive and then using rom manager to reboot and install using the "load from zip function"
I unlocked the phone using the bootlocker unlock given on the HTC site itself using their token registration system. Rest I followed to the letter given in that site.
The problem is I tried installing the following custom ROM's using the reboot/recovery option in ROM manager but all that happens is once after installing them the cyanogen mod loading screen appears and nothing happens for the next 10-15 mins.
CUSTOM ROM'S TRIED BUT UNSUCCESSFULL:
BassROM Jelly Bean Edition ROM
CyanogenMod 9 ROM
JB 4.1.2 CM-X mEMBER’s Choice ROM
HAVE I DONE SOMETHING WRONG ACCIDENTALLY?? PLEASE HELP!
AND PLEASE TRY TO MAKE ME UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR SAYING SINCE THE TECHNICAL JARGON HAS KIND OF PARALYSED MY BRAIN..
IF YOU NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING MORE LIKE WHICH BUILD VERSION ETC (I DON'T KNOW MYSELF WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, MUST HAVE PICKED IT UP FROM THE LAST 3-4 HOURS OF NUMBNESS INDUCING READING FROM VARIOUS TECH SITES) PLEASE ASK AND I'LL POST SCREENSHOTS.
*** PLEASE NOTE SINCE THERE WERE NO SPECIFIC FILES FOR SENSATION XE I DOWNLOADED FILES AS HTC SENSATION FROM THE SITE INCLUDING THE CUSTOM ROM FILES ***

try this

Get back into recovery mode. And wipe data. Then flash the rom. Then flash the g-aps. Then wipe the davilk cache.
When the davilk cache isnt wiped it usually causes a boot loop which I think is what you are in. Try that.
If i helped press thanks!

Hey. I did what you said and removed the dalvik cache after flashing the rom and gapps but the cyanogen mod screen kept flashing for 10 minutes.
Anything else I'm doing wrong? Also how do I know which hboot version I'm using and whether my phone is S off or not ( whatever that means read a tutorial)

1. Wipe Factory/Data Reset
2. Install ROM
3. Install Gapps
And then wait for atleast 20 minutes. First boot takes a long time than usual.

HELP!!
alright I'll do it but being the newb I am I think I f****ed up BIGG TIME now!
I went ahead and found that hboot v .29 does not use revolutionary method and after searching a few threads found out the joupunutbear method to make my phone S-OFF.
I reached till the wire trick and it worked only to be given a message called
S-OFF Failed
Errorcode: 66732337
ErrorMsg: Still sober
Quit....
Press ENTER to exit
So now how do I go back to clockwork recovery mod since every time I open the root area using vol- + power button and press "recovery" it just refreshes the page and puts me back on the same page.
WHAT TO DO NOW? :X
Now I went to unlimited.io and am told that they no longer support windows os.
I had saved a recovery img but I can't access it now? How do I access it?
Also on opening with vol- + power I get this written now:

Alright So I've managed to install the Juopunutbear s-off.
Turns out I was doing it too slowly. Now my phone on pressing vol- + power shows the following

However I installed (the files are kept in zip format in the root of SD card and not any other folder)
1. JB_4.1.2_CM_X_mEMBER_s_Choice_v1.0.0
2. JB_4.1.2_Gapps_mEMBER_s_Choice_v1.0.0
I even made sure davlik cache was removed before going in for a system reboot
and waited for 20-25 MINUTES still the ROM didn't load. Only the Cyanogen mod screen ring kept moving.
I used the recovery img and am now running the phone on original htc firmware till somebody can help me install a custom ROM.
What exactly has gone wrong NOW?

Then use the option in 4 ext recovery to "Format all partitions except sd card".
Then try to install ROM

FINALLY GOT IT UP AND RUNNING! THANK YOU ALL FOR GUIDING ME ESPECIALLY 'malybru' for creating the thread for sensation users.
The only fault that I was doing wrong was missing out on doing the factory reset every time i went into recovery.
Will now test phone and post screenshots soon.
Thanks to all!

Check them screenies.

Can't get into recovery (Revolutionary)

Hi All.
I'm having a problem with what appears to be Recovery mode in Revolutionary.
The Desire S has been rooted and S-Off. I then flashed Android Revolution 7(Mike1986).
As I'm about to sell the phone, wanted to do a factory reset, but this restarts the phone and gets stuck on the HTC logo. So I figured I'd manually flash a new ROM instead. So I go into bootloader, but when I get to the menu and select Recovery, again, it gets stuck at an HTC logo.

You need to flash an eng-hboot first before you can flash an RUU to go back to stock.
All details in my signature and the index thread.
Read the forum and index thread before doing anything
Oh, OK - I'm not that bothered about putting it back to stock firmware. I just wondered why Revolutionary doesn't seem to be working.
Presumably I just need to put PG88IMG.zip into the root of the SD card?

By the way did you install any recovery like cwm or 4ext?
Sent by my fingers to your head.
Um.....I'm fairly sure it was CWM, but don't hold me to that. Whatever it was, it allowed me to install Android Revolution 7.
I can't update HBOOT - Revolutionary keeps bypassing it?????

Android Revolution 7??? On the Desire S...? Where'd you get that from? It's not officially supported by the ARHD team!!
Now I'm absolutely confused where the hell I got that from!!!
I think the best course of action is to get the phone back into shape - so I need to flash the HBOOT back and presumably the recovery back if possible. Revolutionary is preventing me from flashing a new Hboot. Any ideas?
EDIT : Right. Using ADB, I've managed to re-flash CWM and now it works. But can someone advise on getting HBoot to flash?
Loll fire the dd command to flash hboot.
It is fine from adb.
See in the thread of my signature for the dd commands

[Q] Help required please. Unable to flash ICS firmware

Appologies in advance I suspect that this has been covered somewhere but i've spent hours so far and cannot find anything specific to my problem.
I was running Insert coin 2.5.1 on Gingerbread 2.3.4 and decided to upgrade to ICS.
I had clockwork mod 5 working and tried to flash ICS rom , (insertcoin sense 4, v1.7).
The firmware loaded ok but when rebooting the phone I got constant bootloop.
Read the forums and reealised that i needed to load PG58IMG.zip to change to the ICS bootloader. I loaded this file which took ok and has changed the bootloader.
When entering the bootloader i get

hey the roms you've downloaded need to be flashed from recovery
its recovery flashable zip
first of all get 4EXT recovery(more compatible for custom roms)...and then flash the rom
im linking a good guide on how to flash a rom ...refer post #2 from the guide

Thanks for the quick response, i will check out the thread and see how i get on.
Hi ganeshp
I have tried but cannot get 4EXT recovery to install onto the phone. I can only gain access to the bootloader and a basic recovery. I have no ROM loaded onto the phone, reboot gives me a black screen. I have screwed the phone up big time.
I cannot talk to the phone via my windows 7 PC even with all software required attached. The bootloader promt changes from fastboot to fastboot usb when I connect the phone but cmd prompt still doesn't connect to the phone?
I need to perform all functions to restore a ROM via the recovery menu as that is all I have but which ROM should work with my Bootloader version???
Thanks

ohhh .not so fast...
now remeber this AS LONG AS YOU GOT BOOTLOADER YOU ARE NOT BRICKED AT ALL
the reason 4EXT didnt worked via fastboot because you got *locked* bootloader..flash the 3.32 firmware again using the same guide ive linked post #1 ...then do the steps in post #2

HTC Sensation XE needs S-OFF from fastboot

Hi this is my first post on xda, but I have used for various reasons before, so I hope someone can help me.
I am going to try and put as much info as possible on here but to be honest I am a bit of a noob.
My phone is basically stuck on the HTC white screen but CAN load into fastboot & recovery. I got into this trouble by trying to root my phone.
I managed to unlock using htcdev, but unfortunately flashed the kernel before the S-OFF process, so now I am stuck.
Every guide I have seen requires you to enable de-bug mode in the phones settings in order to S-OFF, but obviously I cannot access my phones settings to do this.
When i load the phone by holding power and vol down, i get this;

I have booted into recovery (clockworkmod recovery v5.0.2.0) and tried to install zips but none work. If I am right, in order to write to boot partition i need to be S-OFF?
ANY help would be much appreciated as I haven't had phone access for 2 days now
If any more information is needed let me know. Thanks in advance!

Ok you flashed some wrong kernel and had this issue?
Check for asskickar guide of "flashing roms with SON" in sensation general section.. There do the step extra 1.. (that step is from.. Fastboot only) but use the stock ics boot.img linked there
That will get you out from bootloop
Then you can try soff/custom rom blah blah blah

[Q] 4EXT Recovery touch won't install anything...

Hi everyone,
My battery is dying but for the moment i don't mind,I tried to fix the trouble by formatting/wiping everything in the Wipe/Format menu andnow my 4EXT Recovery Touch won't install anything...
The only things I can reach are SD Card, and the Recovery. What kind of files do I need to make everything right ?

It's think the first thing you should try is to re flash a recovery via adb/fastboot.

- Everything's fine now, i have a stock sensation and will avoid to change something ANYMORE

[Q] Installation Help

A few days ago I decided to finally replace my stock ROM with cyanogenmod 9.
After lots of reading and lots of trial and (even more) error I managed to gain S-off.
"The internet" tells me this is a very good situation because now I have the possibility to flash a new recovery and with that new recovery gain root.
And after gaining root installing cyanogenmod is possible.
Is the above information correct? if not, could you explain or elaborate? this makes it easier for me to grasp the huge pile of information that there is laying around on the internets.
The actual question I'm having is: How can I install a new recovery? and how can I check if a new recovery has been installed?
Information given when starting up with volume down + power button:

Yes that is correct. You need now to ulnlock your bootloader, root and install custom recovery. Then you will be able to install your favorite custom rom. To unlock your bootloader go to htcdev.com and follow instructions. To root and install custom recovery the easiest way (in my opinion) is to use one of the multi-tasks tools available for sensation , you can find these tools here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668276
or here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404
Please read the instructions carefully before you start the process to avoid any possible risls of bricking your phone.
Please make sure you have htc drivers installed, and htc sync program uninstalled.
Good luck.

Ur boot loader is good to go everything Is set just install 4ext app from market and install recovery from the app as I can see that u have followed the JuopunutBear methord it means that the superuser should be installed in ur phone and u have a superuser permission kk
After that all u just need to flash the cm ROM or any ROM and enjoy kk

Do you mean this application?
*wants to put link here but can't atm. I mean the 4EXT Recovery Control 2.29euro*
Is there a way to check if I have superuser installed and/or have superuser permission?

the application Root Checker by JOEYKRIM says I do NOT have proper root acces.
Are you saying I should have an application called "superuser" on my phone? I can't find it.

Thanks this post was really helpfull.
Turns out the all the other recoveries I flashed weren't really succesfull despite the succes-messages.
After flashing the recovery, recovery mode was something different then normal start-up:laugh:
I used the method from the same guide to gain root acces using recovery mode and after that i succesfully flashed cyanogenmod 9 also using recovery mode (2 attempts were made first time i didnt wipe the factory presets) .
Forcing a paper clip down into the hardware of the phone was usefull after all!
Thanks all for the help & advice!!!
To really check if I understand it now, can someone say if the info below is correct?
The bootloader is used to load the kernel and after that the rom runnning the kernel.
Recovery is only activated when booting with volume down + power and is used to change the rom.
S-off means that some safe-guards are turned off enabling more changes to be made.

Glade it work welcome to flashing world man
No, ur info is not 100%right here is some more info
Boatloader is required to flash firmware /radio etc ...(highly risky do not do anything stupid or bricked ur phone) no need to touch it again ....
Unlock boatloader = u can use Manny fast boot command when required or can flash different recoveries etc
Locked boatloader = u have no control over device.....
Recovery - it is mist important as it formats phone and install new ROMs and kernels mods etc
Soff = security off by the company and u can now modify ur device kk
Now I think your info will be updated

the only thing you have to do is do a nandroid backup from recovery just in case
then flash the rom
done
3.32 is what it says under software number(does this need an upgrade to 3.33 or is it OK?)
Also as soon as I go into hboot it says pg58diag .zip no image

avoid that
every time you are entering to bootloader always checking the sdcard for pg58img.zip or pg58diag.zip file
with your current firmware it is OK
