Dual Boot ROMs - Asus Transformer TF700

I have searched absolutely everywhere but to no avail. Is it possible to dual boot two custom ROMs on the tf700? I have been racking my brains to think of a solution but i just can't seem to think of anything. I have a dual boot on my Galaxy S2 so it is quite sad my tf700 doesn't seem to be able to. It is nice having cleanROM but paranoid android would be good to have as well without constantly restoring between the two. And I didn`t really like native ubuntu. Any ideas? And thanks for taking the time to read.
Kyle.

Yes - one on internal storage, one on the microSD - with a slightly modified version of my Data2SD auto-detection script.

I did think about MicroSD but I wasn't sure how to go about it. I will look in to it asap. Thank you.

The most different ROMs that I dual-booted were CROMI 3.x (Android 4.1-based) on internal storage, and stock ASUS Android 4.2 on the microSD - both using the same kernel with some early ramdisk patches using my preinit script method.
The basic idea of my dual-boot solution is:
- microSD with 3 partitions:
- - partition 1: FAT32 as usual (rest)
- - partition 2: ext4 for second /data (min. 4 GB, more if you want more space )
- - partition 3: ext4 for second /system (~ 800 MB to 1 GB)
- Kernel with preinit support
- microSD auto-detection via preinit script in internal /system
- If microSD with 3 partitions is detected, copy ramdisk files for external ROM from /system/boot/rootfs_ext into /
The ramdisk files for the external ROM must of course be modified to use the mount points on the external card (fstab.cardhu and init.cardhu.rc) - similar to Data2SD, just also with /system mounted to mmcblk1p3.
I've never tried it with AOSP- or CM-based ROMs yet (time constraints) - for these you'll likely have to also add the kernel modules to the external /system/lib/modules and appropriate insmod commands to some init.rc files.
Another tricky part is how to get the ROM to the external card. The easiest way is to have it installed on internal storage and then use adb shell in the recovery to copy it over using "cp -a".

Thanks a lot man. Quite new to this all just started using adb the other day. Got a few days until my micro SD gets here so I will read up on it all. Thank you again.

You can dual boot cromi 3.4.7 and ubuntu as it only works on the old 4.1.1 bootloader.

[Q] Why is Ubuntu not possible on B80-B90?

I haven't read too much on the install process, but if I understand correctly it replaced recovery by flashing a kernel to it. Is there any particular reason that we can't use something akin to RecoveryInstaller to install an Ubuntu kernel that will read off of our Micro SD card partitions since it still installs an image to recovery?

It doesnt read off the micro sd it reads off internel sd
B80 B90's dont have nvflash nvflash is used to re partition the internal memory to make enough room for the ubuntu install aswell as other things
On a b80-b90 you can do chroot ubuntu through a micro sd and vnc viewer but its slow same with replacing the recovery and reading it from micro sd the method you are talking about has been done through flashing .zips to acces ubuntu or android but it was slow and not as safe.

Why not make a kernel that mounts the micro sd card as the system then and flash that kernel to recovery? Surely it's possible.
it's of no great importance, through explore we can make the home for the SD.

Why not flash the Ubuntu kernel over the Android kernel then if you only want to run Ubuntu on your transformer? You get to keep recovery and the Android system is still there in the event you want to flash an Android kernel to return to the stock system.

[Q] Fedora dual boot

First post, new to the community (searched the topic first)
Just quickly asking if anyone has successfully dual booted Fedora or RedHat on the tf7oo?
I'm not sure if a partition is a great idea or if its possible to boot from external storage, ie micro sd.
Any input appreciated!

Dual booting with Linux (Ubuntu) has been done on the TF300 but I haven't seen anything about how to do it on the TF700.
I did find this guide about installing ubuntu (I would think it could be adapted to work with fedora or redhat) but haven't tried it since I haven't had time.

ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) for Nook HD+ by verygreen

Latest clockworkmod is in this thread. Go here to download it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032364
Pure awesomeness. Thanks so much for posting this.
This may sound a bit "noobish" (but EVERYONE starts out as one), so please allow me a bit of patience and grace.
Can you plz elaborate (like step 1, step 2, etc.) a bit on where and how we are to type in this command to create the bootable microSD?
I'm not new to flashing ROMs nor to entering commands into a prompt.. rather, I'm new to this particular device, and I don't want to mess this up.
Thanks in advance!
For windows you can use this tool : https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/0.6/0.6/+download/win32diskimager-binary.zip
Instead of dd as that is not available on windows really.

You should only have to insert and boot. But burning cards so they boot is tricky. Look at my Nook Color tips thread linked in my signature. Look at item A9. That is about the Color but is applicable to the HD+.

The rest of the SD card will get partitioned on first boot including a partition for the ROM (/system) and user data (/data). You can then mount /sdcard from CWM and use adb to push the ROM.zip file to sdcard.

What card did you make that boots in the nook color but not the HD+? The CWM from this thread should not boot in the nook color.
To test the rooted HD+, open the superuser app in the extras screen (vol+, apps). If it opens and shows su, etc, it is rooted.

You can do a nandroid backup of his SD install using his CWM. It is hard coded to work on the SD, backing up /system, etc on SD. But it won't backup the installation on emmc (stock).

For the 2nd time I used the "PNY 16gb SD" , and made the "CWM boot SD Card" that was for the HD+ , this card again will not boot in the HD+, but just to see if it would work I tried it in the Nook Color and it booted....
thanks for your help, I checked the SU and it comes up OK, why will the backlight not stay on inside "extras" ?
Edit: I have the SD CWM working on HD+ , I was using the wrong CWM... anyway it booted to CWM , but it did not repartition to 4gb?

Get rid of that PNY card. They are horrible for running ROMs off of.
How do you know it did not repartition? With a 4GB there will be a very small sdcard partition. But I thought you said 16GB above? I am confused.

I'm looking at trying to make somone0's rooting technique available via
- boot from CWR
- install zip from sdcard
- reboot
The problem I'm having is that the CWR doesn't seem to see files copied to /boot as the clockwork disks I'm used to working with always did.
I'm personally unable to get adb to talk to the HD+ when it's in clockwork boot mode, and the only time I've been able to get anything copied to the card to set up cm10 is when I've mounted that card in a linux box and copied in the file from there. That process is very sensitive to which workstation I'm on, and not all of my linux VMs are able to see the card.
So although I think it's possible to make a script, testing it's a chore.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm thinking that perhaps the thing to do is
- make the card
- do the tests on the box here that works
- once it is working, image the card
- hope people have luck using that image.
The rev 3 image does seem to image much more quickly than the early images did

It is because the boot partition is an image, not a file system. That is what held me up on getting my cwm to work. Verygreen straightened me out.
You don't want to use verygreen's versions of the sd for flashing to internal. It is hard coded to flash things to the sd. You need to use my version which I modified to flash to internal.

No, you can't use this one because it would back up your SD installation, not stock. But I have a modified version in my new development thread on cwm flashing and that will back it up.

ext4 support in CWM?
I've formatted my 64GB microSD card with ext4, and I was happy to see that CM 10.1 automatically mounted it at /storage/sdcard1 -- with fuse-y goodness and everything!
Unfortunately CWM doesn't seem to recognize the partition. (I get "E: Can't mount /sdcard", when I try to do anything with the external card.)
So just to confirm, does CWM simply not have support for ext4-formatted external cards? (I have Googled this, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer.)
Thanks!

[Nook HD/HD+] Stock 2.2.0 bootable from sdcard updated 01/09

Well, this one was not really asked for, but I need it for my other testing, and I imagine people might be interested in having the option.
This is also a bit more like a proof of concept (and a bit crude at that), even though fully functional - Stock ROM fully bootable from sdcard.
I don't think a lot of people would use this as a daily driver, but it certainly beats having stock on sdcard vs needing to restore stock in EMMC every time you need to test one little thing (or you might buy a few more Nooks, I guess. B&N would certainly appreciate that ).
Limitations and differences from real stock:
- currently there's no access to emmc storage partition as I wanted the setup to remain as vanilla as needed at first
- adb is on by default, though (As root).
- You can actually change files in /system as much as you want - secure mode is off.
For ovation (Nook HD+) You'll need a special ovation image that you'll need to write to an sdcard, at least 4G in size. (gunzip and use dd or winImage)
For hummingbird (Nook HD) You'll need a special hummingbird CWM image that you'll need to write to an sdcard, at least 4G in size. (gunzip and use dd or winImage)
Also get the the stock image (see below) and either place it to internal storage or reboot from the card and use adb push it to /sdcard (basically it's like you install CM ROM, refer to user-friendly thread in General if you cannot follow my condensed instructions here, only use different file name). Note this already has gapps and other stuff, so you don't need any additional installs other than stock at the beginning.
Stock images:
For ovation: stock-ovation-2.2.0.zip (If you are upgrading from 2.1.1 or before, you also need to flash cyanoboot-ovation-2.zip)
For hummingbird: stock-hummingbird-2.2.0-new.zip (If you are upgrading from 2.1.1 or before, you also need to flash cyanoboot-hummingbird-1.zip)
So after you install this thing, reboot. CWM will warn you that the image is not rooted. Decide for yourself if you want to root on the spot or not.
The dimmed Cyanoboot logo will stay on for quite a while (52 seconds for me) - don't worry, it's doing something.
You'll be able to adb in about halfway through that.
Then you'll see familiar Nook Stock white booting screen, this one will stop at 99% - again no fears, it takes quite a while here till the thing rebuilds the caches, on my class4 sandisk it takes 2m40s
Once it's done - you'll be prompted to register and all that.
Now you are done, enjoy.
Now I also have a script to automate creation of the stock zips for sdcard install, so you no longer need o wait for me to create these files
History:
Old Stock images:
For ovation: stock-ovation-2.1.0.zip stock-ovation-2.1.1.zip - these need a special old ovation image
For hummingbird: stock-hummingbird-2.1.1.zip - these need a special old hummingbird CWM image
This is awesome. This way if users want to dual boot, they can put stock on SD, CM10.1 on emmc and not worry about resetting stock. That way they can add things to stock /system directly. Curious to see if the CWM root works.
Thanks for this.

Hello, I am/was planning to install this alongside my CM10.1 EMMC setup, but now that I reread this thread -again- it doesn't seem to have a way to dual boot. I mean when SD would be inserted it would boot to Stock, when not it would boot to CM, but the ideal would to be able to switch from one OS to another w/t having to add/remove the SD card quite as frequently, no?

You can dual boot if you go to my post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42295360.
Follow the directions there and it will put the cyanoboot menu on the SD. Then you can change the default to boot to emmc instead of SD if you want. Just remember the terminology is backwards though, stock means emmc and CM10.1 means SD.
Then every time it boots with the SD inserted it will boot to emmc and if you want it to boot fully to SD, just press the n key to get to the menu and choose CM10.1 (SD).

Now all it remains is to find a way to enable "unknown sources" to this rom and I'll be set (the method used for "emmc-stock" doesn't work here unfortunately).
Again thanks (both to VG and leap, and to the rest of the community that may have helped )
Hello, sorry to double post (and bump this thread) but I found out why's it impossible to enable "unkown sources" using the "extras.zip" that is been given to leaplinlar's thread. Apparently it searches for the EMMC partition whereupon it tries to enable the changes (install zeam, enable "unknown sources", etc). Given that this install uses the SD-card one would only need to redirect "uknown sources" script to search (and run on) SD card.
Given my non-experience in writing android-scripts I found a hard time to do just that, so if leap or anyone else would be able to modify the script (and post it as a flashable zip if possible) so that to run on an external stock setup, I think, it's something that belongs in this thread as it's the only thing missing from VeryGreen's experimental rom (it actually runs perfectly, root included, it only lacks "unknown sources")...
Again thanks, to all involved, for your work.

Just one thing to add (sorry for the double post): This solution does not work as it interferes with VG's method to boot stock from SD. Upon replacing the boot files, it would simply refuse to boot to Stock (SD), it will hang on the selection screen. The EMMC setup -of course- will boot just fine, so I guess that/this need to be reworked as well ... sadly.
Thanks anyhow

It should not have messed it up. What is the name of the zip you flashed for stock and where did you get it?

And you flashed it with early7.1 CWM after booting with it once?
And how was CM10.1 messed up? You took the SD out of the slot when you tried to boot to CM10.1, right?

For this Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223492 I need the cifs.ko and md4.ko and if it possible, the nls_utf8.ko.
I have installed first with data2sd support, without informations about cifs Support an than the first Kernel, Stock Asus without Data2SD Support.
With non from these 2 Kernels instalations cifs will work.
I/O Error and so on.
Than I found the Information, that I need the .ko exactly for the installed Kernel.
I hope someone can help.

I don't know which kernel you installed, but with my kernel you don't need any modules at all - just mount and go.

OK I'm using cifs manager as well.
So I have share as 192.168.0.5/Music
Mount as /mnt/cifs/music
Login as guest
Load cifs modules on startup and do not use insmod as you don't need it.
I have seen, that I´m using Comi V4.7, now I download V5.
I will use DATA2SD again, are in V5 Kernels included with DATA2SD Support?
Also I have activatet Gast Account on my System, but I become permission denied Error too.
Insmod is not activatet.
CIFS Load on Startup is activ.
Maybe I´m wrong, but I remember to somewhat to do in Regestrie to using the guest account....

I also dont know what wend wrong here...
I have checked and disebled Firewall in my Fritz.Box and on my PC, nothing was blocked.
And yes, connected via the same Router over Wlan.
With ES File Explorer I have acces to the Directorys on my PC.
Now I have Installed Cromi V5 and it has Data2SD Kernels and Support.
Now first start runs and I will try it with new Rom...
New Rom is installed, but also here I have some Problems, not only with cifs...
Now cifs Error is again, no such file or directory...
...but I have found an other possibility to play my Files on Asus Pad.
Splashtop and Power Cinema V5 on PC. Works fine. I have full control over the tab to the pc desktop. Start Power Cinema, choose Music and the Sound comes from the Tablet only, I can also browse and start an play all my Files...
Is not the perfect way, but now I will try to connect the Pad via mini-HdMI-HDMI to my Yamaha Receiver.
Also I think that was not a clean installation.
I have flshed first mod_Data2SD.zip and bevor that I have wiped Cache and Dalvik.
Than I have flashed also with perform a full wipe the new Cromi V5 and the second Kernel I have choosen.
After the Reboot, all Apps, installed in the Crome V4.7 are still there...
Maybe I have some missunderstandings about Data2SD using.
I have to read and read again.
This is not my first Android an Flash... I have flashed some HTC, Samsung, unlocked, rootet ans so on, but the Asus confused me...
Hope for changes...

Well if you had data2sd on 4.7 and updated to 5.0 then you will still see the apps. I force it to use the correct partition regardless of the mount-data2sd file being flashed....
Yes, I also think so...
But where is a possibility to format the second ext4 Partition on SDCard???
There is no way in the first flash, modData2SD and nothing by flashing the CromiX.
I only can format SDCard, but this formats only the first Partition. I have a 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 mSD Card, one Part is 10 GB second Part is ~4 GB. If I format the SD Card, only the 4 GB will be formated.
I think, this is the beginning of all my Problems here with cifs and so on.
I have seen, that the error "No such Device or Directory" doesnt mean the path to the PC, it means the path to the mountpoint. Under mnt/cifs is nothing Named like Music aand I cant create it there, its a read only file system...
So what can I do to become a really clean installation with nothing old in it?
Have I to flash first without Data2SD Support, than maybe instal a partition Manager for Android to format the ext4 Part on SD and than flash again but now with Data2SD???

I don't understand how your card is set up. Is the Ext4 partition 4GB? That isn't really big enough.
Also if you want wipe the 4GB ext4 then you must flash the mount-data2sd first in twrp.....

If you don't have many apps, it can be enough. My apps and app data together are currently 4.3 GB.

Yes, but the initial formatting must be done on a Linux system (or from the command line in Android with a proper mke2fs binary).
No no, missunderstanding...
10 GB is the ext4 Partition, 4 GB ist the rest from the total 16 GB IHS 1 Class 10 mSD Card.
And I did this as well, first flash the mount Data2SD.zip file, and I also wiped there, than I reboot, Power off and go again to twrp and flash the CromiX5 with Kernel how supports Data2SD an perform a full Wipe...
Allways there are still all apps on SDCard, I cant controll it, I dont have a Linux system here...
After the flashs I have only a updated Cromi, not a new system.
First boot runs and its like before.
Is there no way to format the 10 Gb ext4 Partition? Win7 x64 and Acronis could´nt read the ext4.
ooops, I did it again...
I have seen, that I can format the ext4 with paragon partitons manager suite 11 I have installed.
Is this a conform format for this job?

I cant see this.
Now I have the mSD Card in my Acer Laptop and Paragon part. Manager 11 Suite is running, but the Prog shows the whole 16 GB as 14,9 GB unformatted...
Confused again.
In my Tablet ist shows only 4 GB, the 10 GB I cant see.
Retest with Acronis Disc Director Suite 11 and it shows 4 GB Fat32 first part and 10 GB second Part as unformated.
A friend has done the partition and format Job for me, so how can I change this??
Can a take Paragon to create first Part ext4 10 GB and the rest 4 GB Fat32 for this job?
What a f....
Now the using of Data2SD is history.
From 7am to 1pm I have tried to format an correct the Partitionstype of my 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 mSD Card but it was only wasting time.
I have tried these jobs with MiniTool Partitions Manager Home Edition and SD Formatter.
Here I found a german page with Infos to create a ext4 Partition:
http://www.handy-faq.de/forum/android_forum/219275-ext4_partition_erstellen.html
But the Card was useless in PC and Tablet.
Now I have a fresh Installation, without Data2SD, but all my Apps are gone and not recovered by Market Place.
So I have to flash again.
Have someone here a Link to an Howto to create ext4 10GB first Partition an the rest ~4 GB with Fat32?
I´m helpless and frustrated.
So please, give some help.

People in the Data2SD thread said that MiniTool doesn't work correctly and that you have to use a Linux-based partitioning and formatting utility, e.g. gparted.
And if you create your ext4 partition first, it won't be usable for Data2SD either. As the documentation of my Data2SD add-on says, the ext4 partition must be the second primary partition.
I'd suggest you attack one problem after the other - this thread was originally about some CIFS problems - are these fixed now?
No nothing is fixed an I have created this thread to fix the problems.
All goes hand in hand.
Without a clean installation of cromi nothing works, than all apps are still there with all the errors. If I cant instal properly correct than I have the same problems like bevor.
This all I have told ya, here in this thread.
Normaly the mount data2sd.zip has to format the ext4 partition while flashing and perform a wipe, but this was not happend. After flashing mount data2SD.zip, reboot and flashing than cromix5 with full wipe all former installed apps an accounts are still there, and so I have overtaken all old problems too.
