He all! I just my G2X today and was wondering. Is it worth rooting yet with no cusom roms available? And if so, can someone point me in the right direction to accomplish this?
I came from the Vibrant and dont know where to start.
Any help, input and direction is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the club I was also a Vibrant owner before this.. So here is some quick info that may help save you some time searching.
If you plan on keeping the phone I would root it to get rid of unwanted apps but that is each users own opinion. If you do want to root it I would read this thread to make it easy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985
Also if you want to add ClockworkMod Recovery all you need to do is get the newest version of rom manager off the market and select flash ClockworkMod Recovery and the G2X will be the third device down.
After that set back and wait for the custom roms to show up and you will be ready to have all kinds of fun
Hope that helps *some*
uhm. I thought clockwork wasn't ready for us thru rom manager yet?
has it been updated?

So that means that we can create a Nandroid Backup? or the mounted internal memory as sd card will be a problem?
I knew to just wait and it would be a easier way to get clockwork recovery on my g2x using one click root v1.7 because the latest version 1.8 didn't work.plus I heard cyanogen mod 7 is only a couple weeks away

Nevermind....found it
Well I just double checked and it still does not detect internal sd card.. Wanted to post this as soon as double checked as I was using my external. let me look through it more and I will keep you updated
Thanks for the friendly welcome and replies. Im gonna check out that link.
edit:
i downloaded all requested files. when i plug in my phone it starts to read it correctly but then i get a window saying it did not install properly. i clicked root anyway and it wont get past "waiting for phone". did i do something wrong?

Market CWM doesn't seem to work.
Works after second application/reboot.
Great news!

It appears that maybe, the drivers are for 64bit. And my windows is 32. Possibility?

Hey Everyone!
Running into a issue, I just cleared my CM7 rom and now trying to switch to Caty. (I need bluetooth in the car)
I cleared it with Odin, rooted, and have the newest Caty installed. Now the first time I'm booting up, I got passed the Samsung screen with the voice over installation and now it's been stuck on the moving graphics for the past half hour.
Does it really take this long to install or is something wrong?
Thanks in advanced!

i had the same issue when i first installed it, all you have to do is go into cwm recovery and wipe disk clear all cache basically clear everything, then reboot fixed it for me, hope it helps
Hello,
This is my first post here so go easy
I am trying to install [ROM][ICS 4.0.4]Genesis - Stable Build1 - CM9/AOKP Hybrid on LG P999 with no success. I rooted using super one click and made a backup. I flashed 5.0.2.0 to the device and tried loading Mr. Apocalypse's build following every instruction to the letter. The install appears to work fine allowing me to choose options and I get to the reboot prompt fine. I answered the baseband question and opted for the harsh kernel.
After reboot I get the white LG logo then the display dims and there are light leaks of varying degree but nothing after that. I waited about 45 minutes the first time and have waited up to an hour with nothing. I have tried [ROM][CM9][JUL13-Build80] Domination with similar results. I get to the reaper kernel image after reboot and that's as far as it goes. I followed all the instructions to the letter and I have no idea what is wrong.
Anyone that has a suggestion, other than buying a better phone, please let me know. Is there another method I can try?
Thanks in advance.
With Genesis, install it with the stock kernel, then after the first boot load harsh separately. Some phones get a boot loop with harsh in Aroma

I will give that a go, thank you very much for the advice. I will check in to let you know how it turned out.
Also, how did you flash CWM? If the answer is anything other than "NVflash" stop what you're doing and search in the dev section for NVflash

Yes, I used the command prompt on my PC to load the NVFlash image. From what I have learned reading that is the only way it will work correctly.
It is currently loading after the initial reboot and at the LG logo with the blue streak, which is encouraging.

Ok, that is good that you used nvflash to get CWM on your phone, that definitely wasn't the problem. Like he said earlier, could've been the kernel.

Still on the LG splash with blue, I am now considering dancing around the device wearing a tinfoil hat and a chickenfoot necklace... It would be incredibly cool if there was a way to pull a logfile after install or see one while the install is happening.
How long should this normally take? Almost 1 hr now..

Hahahaha, I almost laughed out loud at that. Umm, have you tried just a basic rom, like CM7? Just to compare if it works or something to see if it'll flash correctly and not your phone, and it might be a bad download for genesis. Just to be sure, it is indeed a P999?

I have a GB 2.3.3 on it now that loaded no problem. I tried that two days ago after several failed attempts. I am thinking its something here though because I couldn't get the ICS Domination ROM to work on it either. The GB ROM worked great after I flashed a new baseband to it. I had the static problem before that. It just doesn't want to cooperate with ICS. And the SD card is empty as well, I wanted to make sure there was enough room for a swap file.
I pulled the battery and it boots to the second LG logo and that's where it stays. I suppose both of the ROMs I tried could have been bad downloads, but idk., this has me flummoxed beyond belief. - and yes, it is a P999 (G2x) I bought about a year ago at a t-mobile store. I think it's time for a burial at sea for this thing!
There's always a fix. Possibly a bad download. You could try another CWM, the touch one, because I know a kernel doesn't flash on the touch one, but possibly those roms might flash on a touch recovery. Idk, I'm just babbling here.

Naw, not babble... I call it thinking with the keyboard still in gear. I will try the touch CWM idea, and keep plugging away. There IS a fix, I just haven't tripped over it yet. Thanks again!
I will post an update when I have some more data to spew.

Thanks again, and I will not give up on this, I am way more stubborn than that. I just flashed CWM v5.8.1.3 and restoring. I am going to try to load yet another variation of ICS and report the outcome. If nothing else, I do like this touch image I just loaded!
Have you tried doing a wipe before installing a rom? I've had times where known good roms won't boot just because I didn't wipe before installing it. If your gonna give this method a go try using this to wipe it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854850
Success!
Thanks for all the advice, you guys rock!
I flashed the CWM touch and downloaded AOPK Milestone 6 4.0.4 just to see if it would load. I did the same procedure as I have with all the others and it worked. I guess it was the CWM version? IDK, Going to try to go back to Genesis tomorrow. Thanks again to each of you for all of your help and advice.
Good deal. I've been using CWM touch ever since it showed up in the forums for our phone, and I've never had a problem flashing anything

3G - 4G troubles?
I like it so far, much better than the older version I was using. I noticed this morning that I don't get any signal other than wifi. It looks like some people that did not opt for wifi were able to get signal after reinstalling with that option chosen. I did add the wifi initially, but no signal at all for data thus far. I didn't see any settings that I missed, the battery saver data stuff is unchecked and there aren't any others I could find. I am going to reinstall and hope it takes care of it.
A quick wipe and reload fixed it! :good:
Hey everyone! I'm a newb with boot animations and was wondering if someone could direct me to a tutorial on how to install custom ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I'm sorry, but you really couldn't Google this? No need to start a new thread. I don't mean to sound rude or something, but after being on this forum for a little while you'll learn that a lot of problems can be solved by seeking the answer yourself.
Make sure your rom supports custom boot animations. Download a boot animation of your choice. Copy the "bootanimation.zip" file and paste it in system/media. If you're like me and you have a bootanimation installer within your rom, you can just select the .zip and the work will be done for you. Alternatively, you could download an app that comes pre-loaded with a bunch of animations. Usually all you have to do is press the "install" button and it does the work for you.
Sent from my SR running Orthus Five
Surprisingly, I never thought about searching for an app for that. Thanks for the suggestion haha
Update: I downloaded Rom Toolbox Pro and tried using custom boot animations through that. For some reason my phone's boot animation will not change. No matter what I do, it stays on ATT's boot animation... idk what to do
Update: I found out that the ROM I'm running on isn't deodexed. Basically, I can't personalize anything that has to do with themes. I'm running on ICS 4.0.3. Any help on what to do is appreciated..

Is there a way to switch to that ROM without a computer? Mine aren't available at the moment. If so, I'd do it right now.

Yeah. Google "Orthus rom galaxy s2 skyrocket" and the xda link should be on the first page if not the first result. Download the zip for Orthus Five, download the gapps zip and download the boot loop fix zip. Make backups, preferably in both Nandroid and Titanium if you have the space. Boot the phone into recovery, factory restore and wipe cache and davlik, flash the Orthus zip, flash the gapps zip and flash the loop fix zip. Reboot your phone and set your basic data up (Google account, wifi password, etc). Sign into the play store and redownload Titanium and restore your apps. Keep your nandroid backup in case you want to return to whatever rom you're on now.

And trust me, the battery life will eventually improve. I moved to an S3 yesterday, and ironically I noticed a drastic change in my SR's battery life the afternoon before I traded it in took about a week to kick in but it gets better. If you like the rom, don't forget to go over to the Orthus discussion in general and thank Mindmajick! Just make sure you have the latest CWM or TWRP and if you notice data loss, do this step from the CM thread. Lastly, if you have a network extender, know that only the ICS modems will treat your network extender like "normal" whereas each JB modem will mark you as roaming for your signal.
Thanks for the quick response ill make sure everything is updated recovery wise before I flash

I just wanted to post my experience today with switching roms and i hope this will teach others who see this to read and read and read. I finally got the rom booted and running but boy did i have a heck of a time doing it. I flashed fine but got stuck in a bootloop so i wiped again and flashed still same result stuck well at this point i go back to twrp which i thought was the latest updated turns out it wasn't ( me not paying attention to the file i download great ) now my recovery doesn't show any files just a 0 ( took me so long to figure out this 0 ) and i thought i had wiped my sd card ( that was fun walking around work with my phone held in the air yelling to the gods for doing this to me ) then i sat down and read about the multi-user and the /0 i flashed the rom twice so it took all of my files and placed them in the sdcard/0/0. ive got everything fixed and happy to say still loving liquid smooth. I hope this will help the next person.
Well, at least you learned a valuable lesson AND researched until you found a solution.
