Hey everyone! I'm a newb with boot animations and was wondering if someone could direct me to a tutorial on how to install custom ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I'm sorry, but you really couldn't Google this? No need to start a new thread. I don't mean to sound rude or something, but after being on this forum for a little while you'll learn that a lot of problems can be solved by seeking the answer yourself.
Make sure your rom supports custom boot animations. Download a boot animation of your choice. Copy the "bootanimation.zip" file and paste it in system/media. If you're like me and you have a bootanimation installer within your rom, you can just select the .zip and the work will be done for you. Alternatively, you could download an app that comes pre-loaded with a bunch of animations. Usually all you have to do is press the "install" button and it does the work for you.

Surprisingly, I never thought about searching for an app for that. Thanks for the suggestion haha
Update: I downloaded Rom Toolbox Pro and tried using custom boot animations through that. For some reason my phone's boot animation will not change. No matter what I do, it stays on ATT's boot animation... idk what to do
Update: I found out that the ROM I'm running on isn't deodexed. Basically, I can't personalize anything that has to do with themes. I'm running on ICS 4.0.3. Any help on what to do is appreciated..

Try a JB rom? Might I recommend Orthus?

Is there a way to switch to that ROM without a computer? Mine aren't available at the moment. If so, I'd do it right now.

Yeah. Google "Orthus rom galaxy s2 skyrocket" and the xda link should be on the first page if not the first result. Download the zip for Orthus Five, download the gapps zip and download the boot loop fix zip. Make backups, preferably in both Nandroid and Titanium if you have the space. Boot the phone into recovery, factory restore and wipe cache and davlik, flash the Orthus zip, flash the gapps zip and flash the loop fix zip. Reboot your phone and set your basic data up (Google account, wifi password, etc). Sign into the play store and redownload Titanium and restore your apps. Keep your nandroid backup in case you want to return to whatever rom you're on now.

And trust me, the battery life will eventually improve. I moved to an S3 yesterday, and ironically I noticed a drastic change in my SR's battery life the afternoon before I traded it in took about a week to kick in but it gets better. If you like the rom, don't forget to go over to the Orthus discussion in general and thank Mindmajick! I just bought my Captivate today and the first thing I did was put a custom ROM on it (Serendipity 6.3)
I am proud of myself because I didn't think I could do it, but here I am running serendipity on my phone. Hacking my phone has kind of got me on a high. Now I want to run a different kernel on it, perhaps Onix?
Is it recommended to change the kernel and if so does anyone have any links or tips how to start even switching the kernel? I have no idea where to begin..
Also, anyone want to recommend me any cool apps or tweaks? Pretty much flashed my phone without even so much as learning the android operating system, I dont even know how to change the wallpaper yet!
Just stick with the current kernel for a while and see how the performance and battery life turn out. After you have established a baseline then you can flash onix and then make the comparison. I'm running onix for a day now, seems excellent so far....

Can I delete all the update.zip files and serendipity files after everything is rooted and flashed to custom rom?
This is the point where everyone is going to say stop playing and start reading.
At this point you need to read more and do less.

What 'serendipity files'? The zip archive containing the firmware that you flashed with CWM? Yeah, you can delete those. I'd leave update.zip at the root of the internal zip though. You can delete it without anything bad happening, but there isn't any point and it's handy if you need to flash back to stock, then immediately flash another rom.
With the amount your messing with you're phone you would be wise to keep all files needed for a completely fresh flash. So at least keep the update.zip and serendipity.zip on the root of your sd card in case you screw something up.
Please do yourself a favor and Stop right there, set your phone done and do some reading, or your gonna end up with a paper weight. I would read at least most of the stickies in the Dev section as there are great tools and info there.
Hi all,
I'm an inspire noob running exist's 4.0.3 asopX version 26 and he recently said that he was going to update us to 4.0.4 for version 27. My question is can I back up what i have to the sd card, do a reset, then recover everything using 4.0.4? Or will i need to do a wipe and manually put stuff back on?
thanks
As Long as the recovery you are using is compatible with your backup, then you can restore it with any Rom you are running. Backups from CWM are not always compatible with 4EXT recovery and vice versa

I don't think glevitan understood your question correctly, or maybe I don't. I took it you want to back up your apps and such, not the ROM version itself. And to restore everything back on the 4.0.4 version. This has nothing to do with clockwork or 4EXT recovery.
If he releases the 4.0.4 ROM as an update and does not require a full wipe then just install it over top of the 4.0.3 ROM. Most of the time the DEV requires a full wipe though.
Usually it is best to do a full wipe and restore user data with a backup app like Titanium Backup. But you only want to backup and restore user apps. Restoring system data can really mess your ROM up severely. Google contacts will resync when signed in.

haha Now that I see your reply I guess that I didn't get what he was asking...well, he will come back and get what he wants or will ask again...
I will say, no matter how inconsequential it seems, DO. NOT. RESTORE. SYSTEM. DATA. between major android versions. Let me refine that. I back up my playlists using Titanium Backup. I figured this was an insignificant thing and restored it when I moved from CoreDroid to aospX. Firstly, it didn't restore my playlists; secondly, I had to factory reset the phone < 1 day later.
That said, I WILL be restoring playlists and contacts going from AR26 -> AR27. I'll report either here or in the dev thread if it causes problems, but I have 6 g(mail | apps) accounts plus my FB account, and it takes me a considerable amount of time to get the duplicates regrouped.
Hope I helped. BTW, the free version of TiBU is pretty good, you just have to confirm every install. To me, it was worth it to get the pay version so that I could restore all my apps without confirming every one (right now I have 45-50, that's a lot of confirmations). It's also nice to be able to back out of a buggy new version of an app, or to be able to go back if you don't like the new version (I'm looking at you, FB.)
oh i see now. looks like i really lucked out cuz i flashed AR27 and his 4.0.4 then did a recovery. I thought it was a bit odd that it still said 4.0.3 so I came back here. Doh! okie dokie. I'm redoing a wipe and clean install and I'll just push all of my apps back from my google account.
Thanks for all the pointers about Tia Backup

You should have placed this in the ICS Q/A thread. Do NOT use the development thread for questions. thats why the restriction is in place, so people learn the ropes a bit before they are allowed in there. I would redownload and do a full wipe and reflash. And try to record your mms BEFORE you put all your apps and stuff back on there. Need a clean environment before you can dig deeper into this. Only thing you should put on after installing is inspiremod before doing your mms test. Id love to help test with ya, but i always remove the default mms apk from my phone :/
OK. Now I know. Which messaging app do you use?

So, over the weekend I flashed Tab2Lite and I'm loving the result. However, I would like to add back one or two of the apps that Metallice removed in the de-bloating process. If you look at the tab2lite thread it explains how to re-add some of the apps and has a link to all of them for download.
I've read through the thread several times, I tend to read such things instead of jumping in blind . In the past I've either run full-custom as-is or full-stock so this is my first attempt at customizing a custom ROM. I know I can drop the apk back into /data/app or /system/app (and did, in fact, for a quick fix) but I would rather like to know how to put the bloat back into the ROM so that if I reflash later I will have all the fiddly bits I want. So, I guess, the question is really more along the lines of "how do I customize and repackage a custom ROM" but I didn't want to be quite so generic with the original question.

Ah. Well that's easier than I was expecting
Hello,
This is my first post here so go easy
I am trying to install [ROM][ICS 4.0.4]Genesis - Stable Build1 - CM9/AOKP Hybrid on LG P999 with no success. I rooted using super one click and made a backup. I flashed 5.0.2.0 to the device and tried loading Mr. Apocalypse's build following every instruction to the letter. The install appears to work fine allowing me to choose options and I get to the reboot prompt fine. I answered the baseband question and opted for the harsh kernel.
After reboot I get the white LG logo then the display dims and there are light leaks of varying degree but nothing after that. I waited about 45 minutes the first time and have waited up to an hour with nothing. I have tried [ROM][CM9][JUL13-Build80] Domination with similar results. I get to the reaper kernel image after reboot and that's as far as it goes. I followed all the instructions to the letter and I have no idea what is wrong.
Anyone that has a suggestion, other than buying a better phone, please let me know. Is there another method I can try?
Thanks in advance.
With Genesis, install it with the stock kernel, then after the first boot load harsh separately. Some phones get a boot loop with harsh in Aroma

Yes, I used the command prompt on my PC to load the NVFlash image. From what I have learned reading that is the only way it will work correctly.
It is currently loading after the initial reboot and at the LG logo with the blue streak, which is encouraging.

How long should this normally take? Almost 1 hr now..

Hahahaha, I almost laughed out loud at that. Umm, have you tried just a basic rom, like CM7? Just to compare if it works or something to see if it'll flash correctly and not your phone, and it might be a bad download for genesis. Just to be sure, it is indeed a P999?

I have a GB 2.3.3 on it now that loaded no problem. I tried that two days ago after several failed attempts. I am thinking its something here though because I couldn't get the ICS Domination ROM to work on it either. The GB ROM worked great after I flashed a new baseband to it. I had the static problem before that. It just doesn't want to cooperate with ICS. And the SD card is empty as well, I wanted to make sure there was enough room for a swap file.
I pulled the battery and it boots to the second LG logo and that's where it stays. I suppose both of the ROMs I tried could have been bad downloads, but idk., this has me flummoxed beyond belief. - and yes, it is a P999 (G2x) I bought about a year ago at a t-mobile store. I think it's time for a burial at sea for this thing!
There's always a fix. Possibly a bad download. You could try another CWM, the touch one, because I know a kernel doesn't flash on the touch one, but possibly those roms might flash on a touch recovery. Idk, I'm just babbling here.

3G - 4G troubles?
I like it so far, much better than the older version I was using. I noticed this morning that I don't get any signal other than wifi. It looks like some people that did not opt for wifi were able to get signal after reinstalling with that option chosen. I did add the wifi initially, but no signal at all for data thus far. I didn't see any settings that I missed, the battery saver data stuff is unchecked and there aren't any others I could find. I am going to reinstall and hope it takes care of it.
A quick wipe and reload fixed it! :good:
So I was browsing around and discovered this app that allows you to change your boot animation without having to do much work at all. It is free but there is a lot of goodies you get for buying the paid version. I just tested it on my Atrix 2 running Numa vb.2 (which is a amazing rom) and it works with no problem! But i cant speak for all Atrix 2's so i cant guarantee it will work for you.
Here is the App:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5qcnVtbXkuYXBwcy5ib290LmFuaW1hdGlvbnMiXQ..
And here is Numa which I suggest all of you try at least once if you want a custom rom:
