No radio signal when wifi is on and i am leaving home... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i have a i9023, root, stock JB. At home i leave the nexus phone on and keep connection with my home wifi-network. The phone showes a blue wifi and radio signal. When i leave home and take a look at the screen, there is the radio-signal in grey and i get no Internet connection (....no,it is not turned off in the settings and i am not in "no data/roaming/only 2g" - mode....). Sometimes it helps, to switch to flightmode and back but most oft the time i have to switch wifi manualy off and reboot to get a blue radiosignal......and sometimes eaven that will not give me a blue signal- but i know that my provider has the area coverd verry good. This issue showed up without external manipulation. .....any ideas......??????

....any ideas????? ......btw.......when i get home, the wifi logs in automatic....so the problem is only, when radio and wifi is on together and the phone is logged in via wifi for a longer time...like, over night...and a change oft the area takes place

Wifi fixer/blade wifi fixer.

Right guys,
many of you are having issues with custom roms and staying connected to wifi even when the sleep setting is set to never.
This app has been bought to my attention and would like some feedback on how it works on our x10's, i already know there is a thread on it for the nexus one but can not find anything for the x10, if it has been covered before then i apologise and the thread will be removed.
i have been testing it and so far it has kept connection for me through various things, i can however only test it on my home wifi connection so we need more testers under differant conditions.
Can you please read documentation in the sttings once installed and when reporting say which settings you are using.
please before trying make a backup of your rom incase any problems but so far it as not caused any f/c's on mine.

Thanks to GreatBigDog for bringing it to our attention and steve.adams.x10 for your help.
Please give your thanks to the developers here not me- http://wififixer.wordpress.com/
cheers guys.
MAYBE FOUND A BETTER APP- try this one BLADE WIFI FIX, it seems to reconnect better on the x10-see how you go.
UPDATE- BLADE IS THE BETTER APP WE ARE HAVING GREAT RESULTS PLEASE TRY IT AND POST BACK.
At the developers request i have removed the apk for blade as he wants to keep a count on downloads, however it is still free on the market and i have been told there will be further support for it in the future-thankyou.
For me no I have had no force closes or any problems what so ever. I edited the settings within the app to disable WiFi sleep and turned off the screen for about 5 - 10 mins and I still had a connection.
The only small thing and I don't know if this is isolated to just me but I found that on booting up the phone it wouldn't connect to my network, even when I kept pressing connect so I disabled the app and when I got connected to the network I re-enabled the app and the connection is rock solid.
This app is free on the market place, just search for WIFI FIXER. An update is due soon apparently which is even better news for us.
It will be interesting to see how others get on but I strongly recommend this, esp as ire free too

I'm testing the app with the following conditions.
WiFi - on
GPS - on
BlueTooth - off
Sync - on
I have WiFi fixer app settings as follows in advanced options
Enable WiFi Lock - selected
Disable Sleep - selected
WiFi Sleep Policy - never
Nexus One Sleep Fix - selected
I'm currently connected to my Linksys work router that has WPA2 Security with encryption set to TKIP or AES. Later this afternoon I'll be connecting to my D-Link home router with WPA2 Security with encryption set to AES only.
So far I haven't lost connection but I did have 3 random reboots which I'm not sure are related or not.
Hi,
These are my settings i am using and so far no f/c's or have not lost connection,
phone- wifi on
- bluetooth off
- gprs on
- sync on
wifi fixer settings- wifi usability- balanced
- enable notifications- ticked
- enable wifi lock- ticked
- wifi sleep - never
so far looking promising and thanks for your input.
Just to add to Steve's findings that my wifi signal/connection is alot stronger, i can not lose connection walking down the bottom of my garden, 100m, when before it would lose signal near the back door.

I am using exactly the same settings as you. Does yours connect ok with the WiFi fixer enabled? Everytime I disconnect and then try to connect to my network it can't, it gets as far as obtaining the ip address and then resets its self.
When your connected its solid but it would be nice to have the auto connection working.

Right just disconnected my wifi in phone settings, then switched back on and it re-connected ok with no problem, it maybe took a tad longer but not much.
Have you put the widget on your homepage, you can switch on with that.
Hmm interesting, I just tried again. Turn off, turn on, scans, obtaining ip address, connecting then resets its self and continues endlessly unless I turn off the fixer and connect.
Are you using a static ip? I dunno if that makes a difference, I am not using static ip.
No not tried the widget iv been using the phone settings menu and power control widget

I am using static, have you tried the widget to re-associate and also what about the nexus fix, i think you have to have other settings set for the that ie advanced/disable sleep ticked-worth a try.
OK, Mine just disconnected. and wouldn't reconnect. It was OK as long as I was in range but when I went out of range and then came back in my wifi network just showed up as disabled again.
I tried using the widget set to reset WiFi and it just looped wifi on/off until I ended up getting a Force Close error on Gallary app of all things and then the phone rebooted.
-Edit-
Another reboot after selected the disable app function. I'm going to try different settings.
I've just disabled the Nexus fix, I'll see if that stops the reboots.

Hi GreatBigDog,
I have just walked down the street to lose connection and the same here, it will not re-connect, although i have no f/c's, using the widget did re-connect me and i have not lost signal once when in range.
It needs looking into abit more but could be a answer to our problems.
Atleast you two managed to connect initially, mine wouldn't even do that with the fixer enabled and I was less than 7 ft away from the router and had a very clear path ( no walls or ceiling in the way)
I'm gonna try and find another app for this cos its annoying me. All I can it credit for is making the connection not turn off on screen out for some time.

Hi,
reading through the known issues i have noted that wifi may become unusable, to do reboot or factory reset (samsung galaxy)
on nexus and a few others wifi sleep policy is ignored, caused by power save mode-says work around in advanced options.
cyanogen mod 6 made driver to fix this issues.
Hidden ssids, android is not able to work with wifi networks using hidden ssids.
reccomends not to use with a task killer.
I agree it maintains a solid wifi connection but i think there maybe issues with power save mode of our x10 and i do not know anything about the cyaaogen drivers.
Right guys After looking around for more answers we have found this app, again have tested it and seems to re-connect better, it works in the background with no settings but flashes a quick message up when fixing-see how you get on.
Right, left work and when I got home I picked up my home network without any issues. Took a walk down the road to get it to disconnect and it reconected again without any issues.
I wonder if it could be the difference in encryption between the two routers why it works better here.
Anyway, turning off the Nexus sleep fix solved my reboot issues.
I'm going to give the other app a try now.

For me blade WiFi fix definitely seems to work better and when connected it holds the connection just as well as WiFi fixer but blade is much more user friendly without the widget and does its thing in the background and it will actually automaticly pick up and connect to my network.
I'm struggling to make it connect now, but I am upstairs in my room the door shut and the router is placed on a table under the stairs right in the middle of my house.
I think this is the app we need not the other one purely because ease of use and much more user friendly.

Hi Steve,
Yes i agree, the blade wifi fix is much better and more user friendly. I have not lost connection once, i have rebooted my phone many times and it still worked and walked out of range it still re-connected. I have had no issues with f/c's and the battery usage has not been compromised so all in all looking good.
Can we have a few more testers report back please, greatbigdog is doing fine with wifi fix so it seems there are answers to this wifi problem and lastly this wifi is not only a issue to our x10 it effects most android phones even the nexus 1.
I've been trying blade WiFi fix since last night and it's been doing a great job for me, reconnecting without any problem even when going out of range and back in.
I'm now going to give it a try this afternoon with my WiFi sleep policy set to "Never when plugged in". I'll let you know how that goes.
-Edit-
Perfect!!!! My WiFi will now sleep and then reconnect when I wake the phone to use it.
Sorry for perhaps a dumb question but does sleep policy 'never when plugged in' WiFi will always stay on provided your charging the phone or got a usb connection? I'm guessing it means that but could you clarify for me please?

It means the WiFi will sleep when the screen is blank unless you are plugged into PC / Wall Charger.
For me the power savings more than offset the phone using my data plan for syncing when not in use as I'm never close to using up my entire plan each month.
Ok I see, thanks for explaining. Iv changed mine to that also now, I won't be able to test it for a good few hours when I'm back from work but il post my results.
Thanks

[Q] WIFI and data issue

I've been looking in different forums and can't find an issue to this problem. I did find one thread that had a similar problem, but I didn't see a solution.
My problem is that sometimes when I turn my wifi on, the status bar will do the usual and show wifi and disconnect data. After a few seconds, the data icon will show back up and the status bar will show both wifi and data. However, I'm not able to connect to any webpage.
This problem just recently started happening, so it's not my router. I'm also running the latest RCMix ROM with Leedroid's latest kernel.
Thanks for any help.
Try using a different ROM, it might be the way your apn settings are set...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I also have this occasionally using the stock rom...but it lasts for only a couple minutes. I believe it is happening when the phone thinks it has lost WiFi or has barely a signal from the router...

Wifi network disabled

It's the first time this has happened, but for some reason I can't connect to wifi networks.
Every time I try to it connects to the network for 1 or 2 seconds and then it gets disabled.
I'm on stock rom.
The only thing that has fixed this is rebooting but eventually it will happen again.
Any ideas?

I'm getting similar behaviour on a wifi only GT-P6810 (Galaxy tab 7.7,bought on honeycomb & upgraded to ics). Worked fine at home & fails on holiday. Worked a few times now doesn't pretend to connect, doesn't even show the network unless I turn wifi off & on. Also, when I first switch to wifi settings it bounces off & on a few times without my touching it!

Modem Freezing? Dropping internet.

UPDATE: Here's a screen recording showing the issue.
NOTICE! You might see battery-saving apps running in the video, but I have factory-reset and un-rooted twice and run FULL STOCK no apps like that installed, and I still get this problem<<<
Youtube: http://youtu.be/MGPxlV2Q-0I
I've got a N5 from the play store right when it came out. I've noticed that randomly during the day if I'm using the internet via browser, apps, hangouts, etc the page / app will suddenly lose connectivity. Not just the app though, nothing on my phone can access internet. The status bar with show full bars, and 3G or H connectivity and activity, and when I pull down the quick settings the connection is white, not red. So I toggle airplane mode, but when I do so there is a long delay where nothing happens. Maybe 20 or 30 seconds before airplane mode finally kicks in. Then after disabling airplane mode, I can use the internet again for a while before I have to repeat. Sometimes I cannot get internet back whatever I do though, including reboots, airplane mode toggles, other toggles, searching for networks, network mode... etc.
Often toggling airplane mode will also allow apps to refresh for a second or two (I get a handful of instagram, whatsapp, Hangouts messages, etc) then all connectivity halts again, even though it's showing it's still connected.
Any thoughts what might cause this? I've flashed older radios, wiped and flashed several Roms including full stock not rooted, and I keep having this issue.
There's a chance it could be my carrier, but my wife's phone on the same carrier (but a store-bought N5) never has this issue...
Thanks for your input! Getting REALLY frustrated at this...
rooted? are you undervolting?

What carrier? And have you been tethering? I'm seeing similar problems on T-Mobile USA with full-blast LTE while tethering.

I have this problem when rooted and when full stock, no UC or OC, UV or OV.
I've tried Roms, kernels, radios, wipes, shakes, yelling, crying...

I have noticed that often - but not always - this is the case.
Do you have this issue often?
Does airplane mode take forever to turn off the cellular radio when this happens?
Thanks!
I have the issue maybe once a day. I have never tried airplane mode, but turning off cellular data from that stage takes a looooong time (atleast 20 sec).

I've been having the same problem for some time now. Exact same description as OP. I'm on T-mobile using Cataclysm Rom, but I've gone through Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Stock and PA and still get the same thing. Was looking for Radios to see if that fixes the issue.
In addition to OP, I've noticed too that often I can't connect to any network, or mobile internet will never go from connected (red) to fully connected (white).
Also sometimes the signal shows red (not fully connected) but my internet is working fine....
And other times it can't find my network, and scanning shows no networks, then later, same location, 10 different networks show. Open sky, not inside.
I'm hoping thisnisnpart of the 4.4.2 bug dealing with dropping internet connection, but not sure...
I've tried radios, might try again. My next attempt will be a new Sim card / talk to carrier again about a misconfig. Then if no luck, I'll see about a replacement phone...

[Q] Constantly loosing connection

Almost since I got my nexus 5 last year it has been loosing its connection about two times per day. It does this in three different ways.
1. total loss. The little outline of a triangle appears and a notification that I have lost my connection. Clicking the notification opens the manual selection of networks. I select the network and all is fine.
2. full connection with an exclamation mark. solves it self by waiting for a while.
3. full connection with H/3G but when trying to access the internet there is no connection. This one is really weird. The solution here is top open the quick settings, select flight mode, which greys out the connectivity triangle but keeps the H or 3G part white on top of the greyed out triangle that has a slash over it. About a minute later the H or 3G disappears and I can turn off aeroplane mode. This either restores the connection or jumps to problem one.
First I thought its a hardware problem, but since I don't want to part with my phone I never sent it back to google for fixing.
When android 5.1 was released I installed that manually and surprisingly did not have any problems at all after this. But then I went abroad and using the same sim connected to a local network in the country I went to. It took 4 tries to join one of those networks. When I then came home this problem started again.
My thought is that there is some setting that should be there that stayed from my trip. I have tried clearing all caches from the storage in settings and the dalvik cache. No difference. I'm not to keen on re-installing my phone again. So my question is, has this happened to anyone else? Did you solve it? Is there something I can do to remove all previous settings for the network to make it work again? Other suggestions?
This happens to me, at least 4 times a day for me, it has only been doing it since I installed 5.1 on my nexus 5, which was a brand new one from Google since I smashed my screen and they just gave me a new one, I'm in the UK btw, not sure where you are but it does take forever to connect to mobile network when I turn wifi off too.
I constantly lose connection at my house going from E to H+ to LTE throughout the day

I'm in Spain.
For me it happened before 5.1 as well. But 5.1 fixed it temporarily, until I travelled with my phone. Have you had to switch to another network with that phone?
For some reason when manually looking for a network it seems to be running on a timeout function because it takes me 60 seconds to get the list, always. This feels like a very antique solution, they should just populate the list as a network is found like wifi does it.
