Sandisk 64GB MicroSD is not liking the S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Don't buy this SD. I don't know why, Sandisk usually make good SD cards, but i'm at my 3rd and i still have the same issues. I decided to buy a Samsung 64GB SDXC UHS-1 Pro and i've had none of the issues. This card was about 20$ more but its was well worth it. I bought my 64GB at bestbuy, after 2 weeks i exchanged it for another, then after another 3 weeks i had to RMA because bestbuy didn't honor the rest of the warranty, i got the new one back and again the same issues.
The issues are:
- the sd would not be recognized by the system once every 2-3 reboots
- it would put my status to custom once i transfered music onto it
- it would eject for no reason (did that twice)
- it heats up really quickly when i have stuff on the SD like pictures or files
- it would freeze when opening music app, i had to reboot my phone to fix
I've seen many others with issues with Samdisk 64GB cards, so this thread is just to tell you that you are not alone, and buy Samsung Instead.

Weird, I have had the same Sandisk 64GB that I bought a year ago for my S2, used in S3, and in use now with my S4. I liked it so much I bought one for my wife's phone recently and we have no issues with them.
Not saying that your wrong or anything, but that sucks you went through three with the same behavior...

I don't know about you, but double twist is basically PITA. The double twist always messed up my alarm sound (usually song), that was stored on the external drive. Initially it worked fine, but some update broke lots of things in the app, and this happened when I was using Galaxy S3. I don't use that app anymore and I have given that app 2 stars. Also, if you think that those 2 apps are causing the issue, then it might be an issue with those apps and not the sd card. Though, I never experienced issue about 'system not recognizing the sd card'.

I did use doubletwist in the past but not since getting the S4. I use the SD card now to store TiBu backups, nandroid, music played by Play Music, and videos.

That would be true IF the samsung SD card would react the same way, but it doesn't. If you check all my post in the past 2 months, i have done A LOT of research and troubleshooting before making those claims. I have isolated the issue to the SD card, and the only way i could confirm my claims would be to buy a new one, which i did and it did confirm my troubleshooting was correct

I got the Sandisk SDXC 64gb class 10 Ultra card from Amazon over 6 months ago and it works great for me. I have a bunch of movies and music, record HD video and all my pics to it - no issues at all.
Maybe the new ones have issue, but they all are not bad.

No problems with my 64 GB SanDisk ultra. There are some issues with some kernels if it's not formatted correctly.

My phone is rooted but otherwise stock. Sd card is formatted fat32 in last phone and I regularly move it between phones. I don't doubt that some people have bad cards, but I don't think the phone is doing it, but it is hard to tell with the limited data.
I still suspect counterfeit cards in most cases.

I would not say impossible, but highly unlikely. There are going to be bad cards made - no doubt about it. But the volume of bogus ones is huge, and I still believe that is the basis of most problems.

Device status says Official, no padlock, and running TWRP with GoldenEye ROM. Same results when I ran stock too without custom recovery.

I have the same one and its working great for me! I was having a bit of trouble with the phone always reading it on exFat, but as soon as i reformatted to Fat32, my Galaxy S4 has had no issues since then! With Foldermount allowing me to store Play Store apps onto my SD card, it lets me use it for everything to make up for the poor 9GB of useable storage on the internal SD.

Official. I'm on Stock. Using the 64GB micro SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 card. Formatted w/ exFAT (because I have larger than 4GB files on my card).
Same as the previous 2 posters. No issues here with the Sandisk. I did buy the Sandisk micro SDXC card that is marketed directly for phones. I know Sandisk makes another one (same specs) but the package says it's for cameras.
Not sure if it really matters, but I opted for the one for phones just in case it was "built" differently.
For reference (model numbers)
Sandisk Camera micro SDXC card: SDSDQUI-064G
Sandisk Phone/Mobile micro SDXC card: SDSDQUA-064G

I have sandisk 64g and has worked with g3 and g4..for a year now...must use fat32 period.

I have this card and every time I reboot my S4 tells me my microSD is corrupt. I proceed to reboot again and everything is fine. It is rather annoying. I'm rooted, stock recovery and ROM. SD card is formatted exFat.
I'm outside of return to my electronics store so looks like i'm stuck with it and forced to reboot twice every time I need to reboot

And my SD card is bad

After a flashed ROM from CM7 back to bamf 1.6.3 REMIX, I was greeted by a READ-ONLY error with my SD Card.
Tapping on it to correct the issues doesn't work. I cannot even format it. So I am sad right now. I am going to have to drive all the way back to the Verizon store and hope they will exchange it out. I have only had the phone for 2.5 weeks.
this happened to me too, but "fixed" itself
I had the same problem when I flashed Black Hole and I thought it was a problem with the ROM. I restored to Liquid 1.3 and it went away, but then came back again on a different Liquid install. Not sure what causes it, but restoring and reflashing seems to fix it for me sometimes. Using a 32GB class 6 SD and flashing from ROM Manager and from within recovery.

SanDisk 32GB Class 4
Not using the "stock" card, switched to a Komputerbay class 6 as soon as I received the phone (I had been using the card without incident for several months in a Droid previously). This weird "sd card mounted as read only" issue only happened the couple times though and not sense. ???
Swapped out the card today at the VW store. They thought it was odd. Walked away with a free MicroSD card reader.

My SD card just crapped out on me. I thought it was my phone at first and I panicked, but the 16GB from my D2 works fine in it for now. I put the 32GB SD in my Transformer, my D2, and my Win7 PC and they all choke on it. Win7 locks up Explorer and the Transformer reboots when I insert it... I guess I'll have to go to Verizon too. I haven't even had this card for a week yet... :-(
BTW, Nice screen name. My brother likes to go by that name on the home caller id system. It's funny hearing it said out loud when he calls. "Call from: Turd Ferguson!" lol
Happened to me as well, first week of owning the phone, wasn't even rooted yet. Verizon swapped the card out for free under warranty, haven't had a problem since.
Add me to this list as well. Been using a 16 gig card from my incredible and haven't had an issue yet.
On the way home yesterday, I tried to play some music from my phone, and my phone said there was no SD card availalbe. I tried several things, and sure enough, my SD card is dead. I called Verizon, and they walked me through everything I just did. They declared it dead. They said they are out of stock, but would be happy to send me a 16Gb card. Eh...NO! They said the only thing they could do was to put me in touch with Sandisk to do an RMA. So, Verizon connects me to Sandisk. I explain to them that Verizon has already declaired the card dead, and I just need an RMA # to return it. It really is just that simple, but no we have to spend the next 30 mintues doing everything a 3rd time to prove the card is dead. Then Sandisk comes back and says the 32 GB card is out of stock, but that they can send me 2 16 GB cards instead. NO!!! I don't want 2 16 GB cards!!! Just send me the 32 GB card when you have one. They said ok, but it will be at least 3-4 weeks. After an hour and a half on the phone with Verizon then Sandisk, I have an RMA number. I am going to take a chance and go to my local Verizon to see if I can just swap it out there. Until then I am back to my 16 GB Sandisk card from my Touch Pro. This is the third Sandisk microSD card that has gone bad on me. I think I will be avoiding Sandisk from now on.

Damaged SD Card

I'm starting to get really annoyed with either this phone/android or cm7. My SD card apparently has been "damaged" yet again for the 2nd time in 2 days while the phone sat at idle. I have a backup of all the important items but this is beyond annoying to keep reformatting sd cards. Any ideas as to what might be destroying my sd card?
What's the default capacity of the card? If it's 8GB, is it the card that came with the phone? If it's not that card, did you buy the card from a reputable vendor? There are entirely too many counterfeit cards floating about these days.
It's a 16GB Class 6 card I bought on Amazon. Forgot the brand and it's not even listed on the card itself. I think it was Komputerbay. That's probably my issue.
Hmm.. Was the card sold directly by Amazon, or was it a 3rd party just selling "new/used" stuff via Amazon?
Nah it was from a 3rd party. I was being cheap and found a 16GB Class 6 card at a good price so I figured who cares what brand it is and I guess 4 months later is when I'm paying for that.
Something to try, rather than reformatting every time, is to mount the card on your computer and run fdisk. Try this link for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4112485&postcount=9

Yeah I'm betting it's a cheap p.o.s. card. Good thing I got my invite to Music Beta today! I'll upload my music there and be fine with the stock 8GB card.
Another thing that seems to work for me when I get "Damaged SD Card" or "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" is boot into Recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, and make sure all four partitions are unmounted. I don't know why they are mounted on boot, but it seems like when I get an SD issue, I go into Mounts and Storage and one of them has to be unmounted.
This usually happens when I have recently mounted USB storage to transfer files to/from my computer. If anybody has some insight into this, please speak up! Thanks.

Warnings with SD cards for A2

So I recently ordered a Sandisk Class 4 16 gb sd card for my Atrix 2. I wanted to be able to keep a backup of a ROM at all times while having 500 songs on my phone..but 2 gb just didnt cut it.
So i tried to connect the card with my phones USB cable while having it in the device, but it just wasnt showing up on the computer. I had to end up using a card reader.
It still works...just something to keep in mind while buying SD cards.

Although problems do not seem to be prevalent with the slower class cards, it might be a good idea to follow Patriot's advice regarding formatting. The suggestion was posted by Patriot in response to a review of a 32GB class 10 microSDHC.
Patriot acknowledged a problem with hemorrhoid OS and 32GB class 10 cards and suggested a temporary fix of performing a full format on a Windows PC with a 32kb allocation size, obviously FAT32 since stock hemorrhoid does not recognize NFTS.
The reply can be found in this review although the specific page will change if more reviews are added.

I got a 16gb class 4 sandisk and I am formatting it in my computer using following method:
I inserted the memory card in my E71 and connected it to my computer in mass storage mode. Then I started formatting using fat32, 32kb through my computer. But it is taking ages. Since last 2 hours, only 35% is completed. My questions:
1) Can i stop the format in between ? Or will it lead to certain faults?
2) Is the format this slow? Or should I try formatting it by putting it in adaptor and putting the adaptor in laptop slot and then format?

I'm using a Kingston 32GB Class 4 card, which is actually in my SGS3 now from my A2, and I have never seen anything to complain about with it. I still hit high benchmark scores as noted with my A2 as well as my SGS3, thinking though that I may try a higher rated class sdcard for the SGS3, since it doesn't seem to have the issues that the A2 has seen. But, a little more digging around has to be done before I make that kind of jump! (Better safe than sorry!) But, yes, the Class 10 cards will -eventually- give you grief if you try to use one with the A2. Not sure the 'scientifically-proven' answer to give here, just know that from everything I have seen, which has been substantial enough for me to believe that...

You should try a re-formatting of the sdcard, as you likely have some corrupted app data/other data that is causing the rebooting. A Class 4 card should give you no problems like this, unless you have some issues like I just mentioned.
And if you're trying to restore app data from, say, Titamium Backup, I recommend you do not do this. Just try a fresh format of the card, and do not restore data to it. Run your phone afterward for a good while to test. If your phone continues to reboot after you have tried this, changes are that you can rule out the possibility of the cause being due to the sdcard, and we can explore other possible known culprits...

[Q] SD card just died

I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far

So I have had my sd card corrupt a few times now, so far this has seemed to help me recover my data.

The problem could be a sandisk SD card:

I read about the SD problems after just getting the S3.. decided to get a different brand card from the store.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket Micro SD card

Hey all,
I purchased this 32 GB Class 10 Micro SD card for my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and well I can't seem to get it to work properly, I can get it formatted and the phone reads it but for the most part anything such as my music that I put on it wont play from the card. only a few of the songs will actually play and everything else just tries to play but it just makes like a screeching noise for like 2 seconds and then either stops or goes to the next song. I have tried the standard music player and also Double Twist as well as Rocket Player and got nothing except for a few on the songs and yet there all mp3's so what could my problem be or is it just a crap card as it's not to my knowledge a name brand. Also I did take some video with the camera and then tried to play it back and it failed said can't play so I am assuming it recorded and saved directly to the Micro SD card. I have formatted it in the phone with android also on my windows PC and then even with Mini tools partition wizard and am just struggling with the fact that it doesn't work or barely works and will play like 5 of the songs but nothing else. Here is a link to what I bought
edit: Guess I can't post outside links yet so it's labeled

Thanks,
Most likely a bad card. There is so much bad memory out there you can't even be sure what you get if you buy at a name brand store.

Are you able to play those songs if you put the microSD card in a PC? Are you able to open the videos from the PC? If not I'd say it's a card issue.
I have a Lexar 32GB microSD and never had an issue... I save my pictures, music, recovery backups on it and never had a problem reading them.
SD Card issues
Just after purchasing my phone in November 11, I have gone through a few cards. One junk card, one Kingston card, and one Lexar card. I've also tried old smaller cards that I had left over at home and had been using successfully for years. All of them worked fine until they met my Skyrocket. Without fail, shortly after making a few reads or writes (pictures, reading music), I get an SD card error and it won't do a thing. Works fine in any other device. I decided that it was a short or something in my phone and gave up - space isn't really an issue for me anyway. I only became interested again this morning after flashing CM 10.1 and trying again on a lark. I'm going to try it for a while to see if it may have been a GB issue. Anybody else heard of this? I figured I just had a single bad unit.

Hey,
No only a couple of the songs work on the PC from the card which are the sames ones that play on the phone otherwise all the other ones don't work. Anyways The guy who I bought it from just said it is probably a bad card but told me to keep it and he gave me a full refund and told me to not deal with the hassle of returning and paying to return it etc as he didn't have anymore in stock. So I just find it weird that like 3 or 4 of the songs will play like normal but nothing else will.
Low level format the card, stick it in ur phone and format it, then copy 8-10 songs on there and try to play them.
If that doesn't work like others said u probably bought a melon

Just wanted to say I've been frustrated with this exact problem. I thought it was my phone's fault, but realized its the micro sd. So far I've tried two Samsung branded 32GB class 10 cards and they are both causing this issue, even in a second Skyrocket phone.
I'm moving on to a different brand with high hopes.

I only use class 10 Samsung sd cards and they are great. You probably got fakes.

One was from Newegg and the other from Bestbuy, certainly hope they weren't fake from those stores.
Ordered an Adata and will see how that is.

I had similar issues. I recently went through several sandisk cards, 16 and 32 gb. Both purchase from different walmart stores. I knew it wasn't an issue with my phone because my old card worked fine. Went to bestbuy and bought a PNY 32gb and works flawlessly. Sandisk seems to have issues with galaxy phones in my experience.
I need some input. The Adata card is giving me the same issues(failing to backup in twrp, camera glitches) It's a 32GB class 10 sdhc UHS-I. I wonder if its the speed of the card or the type. I'll attach a pic of the card.
What could be causing the problem? Is it the UHS-1 spec?
Edit: After some digging, looks like it's due to the UHS. great...
I need advice
I am going to buy new SD card, 32GB, But I don't know which one should I buy? I need your advice, thank you
