I need some assistance to get these keys back on my phone..
I don't understand why ANYONE would eliminate the menu button that is used in SEVERAL programs, and the Search function that is used on most apps as well.. I got my HD on Saturday and don't think I'll be able to adjust to not having access to program menus.
The three little squares that float all over the screen depending on which program you use, the search magnifying glass as well..
I don't really want to use any roms. They always seem to lose some sort of key functionality, like HDMI or something even more valuable.
Can ANYONE help me with this?
In my searches. The menu button on bar is placed there by the app. It's only removed when the app has the menu button in it. As for the magnifying glass. I've never seen it on the bar. I think if your running stock the best you can do is run and app called SoftKeyZ but it only changes the icons, I don't believe it add buttons.
You could use pie keys and delete the nav bar on stock. Or there was a topic somewhere about adding the keys to stock. Not sure where you'd have to search add menu button to navigation bar on here. Easiest method would be to run a custom rom or do the first option.
Your lucky day. I was bored

Post 2 has the manual method that I would assume works on the razr.

Is there a method of preventing the default android buttons: home, menu, search, and back from being active? Or locking the default android buttons while still able to use the device? It seems like I am constantly bumping these keys, as I'm always back on my home screen some how. I tried google with no luck. Currently running vegan tab beta 5.1 which of course has the soft keys to use instead.I am looking for either a permanent our semi-permanent method. Thanks in advance.

As mentioned somewhere here, you can use Button Remapper to remap those four buttons to focus, effectively turning them off.
In addition, I would recommend the use of Button Savior to give you the ability to bring up soft buttons when needed (i.e. in apps where the task bar is not visible).
Use them both...problem solved
Which Button Remapper? Did a search in the market, found one for the hero and galaxy tab?
Soft Button Solution..

Thank you gonna give that a try now.
This works really well. Now I just have to train myself out of trying to use the capacitive buttons.
Was curious if any of you guys were working on, or know of a program that can act as a back button or menu button, on screen. My home row keys are taking a beating, and normally cause to much hand adjustment to use them.
Just a thought.
I was thinking maybe swype like actions for the back button, etc...
I've tried button saviour, but didn't like it too much.
Thanks for reading and replying.
"Softkeys for root users" might be what you're looking for.

Download Button Savior from the Market. Alot more friendly to the eyes and a heck of a lot easier to use than Softkeys. I use it on my Nook as well.
tried softkeys, wow, that is a difficult program to use, but looks great.
I will have to go back to button savior I guess, and make it work.
Thanks for the replies.
Hope this helps you.

Its not hard to use. Its hard to configure properly.
When you install, hit the home button and choose softkeys as your default home. This will allow softkeys to intercept the home button call.
Then, in softkeys, program it so one push gives softkeys and 2 pushes gives you "home" (<--- specify which home app that you want softkeys to call upon double click)
I also put the back and menu buttons (on my Nook Color) in the notifications area to have easy access to them those as well.
Thanks! I just noticed I had a pm, and this is apparently where all the posts, I followed, made apparently get moved to!
I thought I was crazy.
DroidX, rooted, stock ROM
I came from a rooted Incredible with soft buttons, and dislike the hardware buttons on the X. I installed the brilliant Swipepad, which handles many of the issues, but still haven't found a convenient way to get HOME without that button.
MENU and RETURN would also be nice.
Is there a way to do that?
Lucky You Try Button Savior.. I've been using it for 6 months and it's great, Has menu, screen off, home and others

You could probably look for a soft keys app. There's a few out there.

Installed Button Savior and tried various config options, but can't seem to get the trigger to show on my Droid X screen. ???
If you run CM7, you could turn on 'Tablet Tweaks'. It adds honeycomb style home/back/menu to the notification bar (and lets you move it to the bottom rather than the top if desired).
after you install you need to open the app, and go over the settings. Then the trigger pops up

I am running CM7 on my Droid x and my galaxy tab... settings are there on my tab but the tablet tweaks aren't all there on my Droid x, only status bar on bottom option, dead zone option and disable lockscreen option. The settings for soft buttons aren't there, where they are on my tablet. Not sure if it is unique to my rom but my source for Droid x is straight from CM7 site, and I install nightlies almost every day. I'm in no way calling you a liar, but I am wondering if you have first hand experience, as if you do, I would actually like to know how to get the soft key setting, because it would be practical at nighttime to switch off lights on home buttons and use a soft key instead(those home lights are so damn bright at night and you can't lower their brightness like you can the screen, but you can shut them off)

You are correct. I assumed it was there and didn't actually check until just now.
I use CM7 W/GB (RevNumbers builds). They are almost identical to the official nightly builds. I also use CM7 on my G-Tablet. Know that Tablet tweaks was there, and that the Tablet tweaks option was there on my X, I just assumed (my bad) that the options were the same.
After your post, I double checked on my X and I get the same options as you.
Looks like button savior is the way to go.

Lol so I'm not crazy? It would be nice if the CM7 team added those features to our x's. I just might go bug the CM7 team and see if I get a reply I can't imagine it would be difficult to add those options to the menu...

Right now, the soft keys on the Z3 do 'Back', 'Home' and 'Recent apps'. With my previous phone being a Galaxy S2, this is a major annoyance for me. I want my beloved menu button back . So my question is: can I remap the 'Recent apps' button to instead show the menu? I've tried some solutions like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818499, but this doesn't seem to allow customization of the soft keys I want to change. Is there anything out there that lets me do this, preferably without directly modifying the layout file? I have root so that's not an issue.
Thanks in advance

that s inside firmware itself
you can root ur device and install custom recovery to install Custom ROM like CyanogenMod
there s option for complete customization of soft-keys.

Except no roms are ready for xperia Z3 yet. Also might want to try Carbon Rom if you really liked the navigation button customization. They do a better job than CM, and have more options.

Yeah, that's kind of the issue for now: the lack of ROMs. Could this be done through Xposed or something similar was well?

(i don know about that module a lot)
Root and xposed will work
There is a module for remapping keys and one for adding a permanent menu key

Just give it some time. Lollipop and Xperia Z3 hit the shelves around the same time, but DEVs are more interested in getting their ROMs working based on lollipop, instead of getting a custom rom based on an old OS working for a new phone.

Glad I could help
softkeyz
therd is an app called softkeyz which is paid and requires root but you can customise everything and by everything i mean that you can customise the function of the buttons and their color

coming from a Note1 i have exactly the same question. sounds like we just wait for Lollipop and learn to love back-key on the left side (perhaps that's more intuitive anyway). i still wish there was a way to generate a menu-keypress though, like a combo? a long press?
i often feel like theres a menu there, but no way to see it. is it always true that the 3 vertical dots will appear somewhere (sometimes top, sometimes bottom. grrr!) in this menu-key-less interface?
First thing I did after root... Install Xposed framework then download/install the GravityBox(KK) module. In the GravityBox settings, go to Navigation Bar Tweaks. Enable the master switch, then check the box to "always show menu key".
This will enable your menu key and still keep your recent apps key. You can also swap the recent and back button (if your used to that type of layout). And if you want even more then you can do like I do...
(in the Navigation Key Actions menu, not in Navigation Bar Tweaks)
*shrink the nav bar to 75% height
*long press back to close foreground app
*long press home to enable/disabled screen rotation
*double tap home to show a custom app launcher menu (put your fav apps n here)
*double tap back to switch to last open app
*long press menu to enable/disable flashlight
(this is just my setup, each keys long press and double-tap have multiple options to choose from)
With gravity box you can do a whole lot. You can change your battery icon to a different one but be sure to go into your phone "settings>personalization>status bar icons" and uncheck battery. If not, then when you restart you will have 2 battery icons (stock & gbox battery) in your status bar. Also, you can turn your status bar into a brighteness control, which comes in very handy, or enable song skipping by long pressing the volume keys (when the screen is off).
Just check everything out in gravity box, it has soo much to offer.

I just did this with my Xperia Z3. Get root (note there's locked bl root available). Then install xposed framework. Then get Xperia / AOSP NavBar module from Xposed Installer.
Hi.
I am using Huawei Mate 9 (rooted).
I would like to add some space in between the navigation button ie Recent, Home & Back. Because the default one is too close to each other made me feel really uncomfortable and would easily press the wrong button with my big fingers.
So I would like to know is it possible to achieve this?
I have tried installing this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.paphonb.systemuituner&hl=en
But it's not compatible.
I thought it could be possible with editing some of the system values. Because my intention only to get some space between the buttons, that's all.
Thank you.
I'm searching the same as you. Hope someone find a way
I want two arrows (left and right) which allow me to choose between last opened apps
I want to have lock screen button on right, quick shortcut on left. Kangvip ROM able to achieve it but not stock ROM....
This is the only thing with this phone. The navigation buttons are to close together!
