i had this issue with my old carrier as the signal was low
what signal strength are you getting?
you can check at settings>about phone>network
& also is your device rooted?
Try updating your radio to the latest version!

In my case it wasn't software problem. I change ear speaker with eBay one and now its perfect.

So I finally opened up my phone as I was sick of the power button not functioning as it should (sometime one click recognized as multiple clicks, etc) so I opened up the phone, pulled out the tab covering the button and discovered whats used as a switch for the phone. To my amazement, all it is a concaved metal circle piece which makes contact with two metal plates (making a full connection to be registered as a click when this concave piece is pressed down). Obviously, if this very flimsy metallic circle piece wears out (which I assume is very quickly) it will cause an issue for your button. What's worse is that its not even secured tightly to the phone, All that is used to secure it to the phone is the pressure of that piece of plastic tab everyone is accustomed of seeing. i'm furious to discover this about the build quality of htc phone and will double think the next time I make the purchase.
This should help debunk some of the theories that its from a software issue rather than hardware issue.
Edit: uploaded the photo, the white circular thing is the metal piece and the black dot is the thing sticking out, the yellow piece attached to the black dot is the piece of plastic sticking on to the concave
Nice finding. Thanks for this info. You have the guts to do that & void your warranty??

I don't know why they'd think this design would work.
I suffer the same issue...

ya warranty is not gonna happen, bought a refurbished unit from a seller on ebay who lives in the states (i'm in canada). I did clean out the contacts a bit and Mcgivered the button a bit and my current observation is that at least its still usable. Honestly though, a design like this where one of the most important button on the phone is governed by a thin metal flake is just ridiculous. If you've seen it in person, you would be surprised that the phone lasted longer than a week.
That's just plain sad. This is my first HTC device and all the hype about build quality.... I'm personally never purchasing another HTC device, not until maybe they come out with something jaw dropping.. Between the power button issue which gotten worse over the past 2 weeks, dust under the screen, touchscreen issues, I'm done. Getting my warranty exchange Monday, selling it, ordering the GS...
Thanks for the find and info

If you still believe it is a hardware issue, then someone PLEASE explain to me why you can install the InsertCoin ROM on the SAME exact hardware where the issue IS currently present, and then suddenly it will magically disappear?
While you're at it, you might as well explain why this issue wasn't present in some of the earliest stock builds.
Now I'm no developer, but I believe there is a very very small detail that was changed in one of the firmware updates, relating to how the device registers the power button click, that is the root of the issue.
i've tested it out throughly. Basically, when the metal flake doesn't bounce back up (or comes up slowly) after its pressed, the phone think it's being pressed multiple times (screens rapidly turning on and off). Obviously, developers can code it in their software to only recognize one press followed by a delay in ms before another press could be recognized, that's probably how your new firmwares fixed the problem. Otherwise, as these metal flakes wear out, this problem will sure start to occure more freqently.

I've heard that the issue emerged with the 2.3.4 firmware, recently I unrooted, reversed S-Off and all that to get it ready for my warranty exchange, and of course original RUU brought me back to 2.3.3.. While I never had a problem at the start, even with CM, when I reversed 2 days ago, the Power button issue emerged, so my take is its hardware, my opinion but I could be wrong. Giving how stupid the design is, I'm not surprised if it is.. I mean really, The effin back cover has to make proper ground contact for the touchscreen, of course its going to get worn out eventually, one of many issues that piss me off with this phone.
There is nothing wrong with the concave metal plate.. its called a tact switch and its been used in many digital electronics..
And by the way, it will not wear out that easily.. you can google about it if your in doubt..

I took mine back to the HTC service centre here in Singapore and they said that yes it was defective and then replaced it (took 48 hours and they even couriered it back to me at work)
Certainly seems to be a known hardware issue.

That's why HTC replaced the "upper board" in my Sensation.... B/c it's software... Not.

Can it be a mix of both?
Well I don't have a problem with the power button on any sense based ROMs, only AOSP/CM7/MIUI ROMs so I don't need to pull my phone apart to tell me its software based (at least in my case)

Well, this person already prove it was hardware problem by sending to htc. How about the person that claim it was due to software problem? Have you send to htc & did they claim & agree it was ota 2.3.4 bugs?

My phone had no issues before the update where the screenshot feature was enabled. The button started misbehaving immediately after the update. That's all I have to say, but to everyone else who would like to have their own opinion about it. Well to each its own. It's your device your money .. fiddle as you please.

Hey mumos, the thing is I expected to see a tact switch design with everything built in place, not just a piece of the switch lying on top of the contact point, when putting the "button" back in place, I also noticed that if its even slightly misaligned (it's not even sitting in a hole or anything, it just lies ontop of it), button presses become messed up, this could be the cause of the problem for some users too. from normal usage, the switch might've simply moved a bit causing problem to the button prese sensitivity.
I recently just bought a used HTC sensation (T-mobile brand) , however being as stupid as I am, i got suckered into buying a deffective device. I accually got somebody else to pick up the phone for me and the person did not notice that the phone had water damage... The void sticker is black? i believe it should be white. And the sticker on the battery and the back of the phone are both red. However, the phone works perfectly except for the speakers... This makes the phone extremely useless, no ringer or notification... The front speaker for calling works and so does the headphone jack, so i was wondering if it was possible to repair the speaker or possibly increase the volume of the front speaker and use it for all sounds. Is there a possible tweak or mod that would allow this? or even an app? I already tried unlocking the phone and installing a custom rom (insertcoin ics) so i know it is not a software problem, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Ur best bet would be to send it into HTC so they can repair ....even tho the phones warranty is voided they still can fix it for a price

Can anybody help please? Anybody has bad to deal with a water damaged HTC sensation. I took the phone apart, tried cleaning the Inside with alcohol and tested the speakers and it seems to work but not with the phone. I'm thinking it is a problem with the motherboard itself.... Anybody have any other ideas?

Hey I have this same problem now as well. How did you test the speaker without the phone? And did you evantually solve the problem? If yes, how? Please let me know, any help would be welcome.
Cheers
Hi,
This is my first post after months of reading and waiting for the ICS RUU. I've installed it and no issues rose for me, just a strange behaviour with the headset I've always successfully used with my DS. Now when i have a phone call the mic part of the headset is not working, the person at the other end doesnt hear me, anyone has the same problem?
Thanks!
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Here no headphones mic problem...(me too with official ICS ruu update).
i have no problem on that but what my problem after official ICS RUU i had a very low in-call volume the volume before i update it to official ICS is OK, but now i cant hear any call when the environment is a bit noisy. Had check my setting of the volume is "MAX".
Ive just tried again the stock headset (found it in the phone box) and mic works...funny I'm wondering why it doesn't catch the mic with the diddy beats, It's a metal connector and it worked fine on GB...It would be nice to know if there's a mic setting flag somewhere in Android when you plug in a headset...

Even I am facing headphone issue after ICS RUU upgrade. My headphone mic doesnt respond during call's. Someone pls can suggest..
Had a problem with my hands-free 's mic also, even before the RUU to ICS.
So I take it I might harmed the thing.
Yet, the ear-buds worked just fine and I was able to listen to radio and music.
Now, there is no radio or music coming from the hands-free set *or* any other headset I use.
At first, I thought it must be the jack hole. It could be destroyed somehow. Humidity, or something else.
But I tested them with a call, and they were working just fine.
(The incoming audio, anyway...)
So, there is not a hardware problem with it, or the headphones. (I wonder if there is any problem with the hands-free set, also...)
That leads us to the assumption that there is some kind of bug (or something) in the software part of the phone.
I would be curious to find out more, since the vast majority of my phone's SD card is filled with music and pod-casts.
Hi,
I've got a HTC sensation, which I have rooted and is now running Bruce's CM10. The problem with my phone is that some of the time the microphone doesn't function. This may be a hardware problem, but i'm not sure. The (headset)microphone works if i plug in the headset and it does work some of the time. Once I experienced a spontaneous cutoff of the microphone during a call.
What I'm lokking for is the driver/apk which controls the microphone. Does anyone have this, or know where to get it?
Greetings,
Martijn
I found that this is a hardware problem. Have to replace the mic.
