My phone just won't turn on - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I switched off my phone for a day and then today when I tried putting it for charge (when the phone was still off) the battery charging sign came for just a second and then stopped. And since then my phone won't turn on.
I don't even know what to do since I don't know what went wrong. It didn't get wet, I didn't bang it anywhere...
The phone won't turn on so I can't get to download mode or recovery
I already tried letting it charge for about 1 hour but still nothing happens

2 reason first you battery is broken secind hard brick or sudden death
Do you have custom rom?
Sent from my GT-I8160P using xda app-developers app

It could be screen problem definitely, same happened to me, so i had to take it to Samsung's center where they gave me new Galaxy 3/Apollo.
It happens because of overclocking or underclocking even by undervoltaging your device. So next time take care.
Sent from my Galaxy SIV using xda app-developers app

My battery is relatively new (bought a year ago) and I didn't flash my phone recently.
I am using a custom ROM though. I haven't overclocked my device or undervolted it.
Hmm it's possible that the screen isn't working. I'll switch on the phone and try calling on it to see if it shows as switched off or if it rings. Then I'll come to know if it's a screen fault
I'll report back soon. Thanks!

My Palm Pixi always did the same thing, when I plugged it in with a dead battery.
One of my previous Evos did that. The screen would freeze completely and flicker - if sound was playing it would continue on whatever note was playing when it froze. It started doing this about once a day, then it did it all the time. It would freeze on the splashscreen so it would take 15-20 attempts to get it to boot fully, and then only run for about 15 minutes before it would do it again. Sometimes when it finally booted it would say that the battery was at 0% despite a full charge. I then started to notice that if I put it on the charger while it was off, it would turn on as soon as I took it off.
The phone wasn't rooted - it was a replacement I had just gotten - so I couldn't try flashing anything.
The techs at the Sprint store couldn't tell me what was wrong with it. If yours continues to get worse then I'd take it in for a replacement.

Sounds almost like mine, Except mine turns on when I'm plugging it in... I recently tried a new phone charger and it Still did it just Not as much so its kind of hard to determine if its actually the phone itself, or the Cheap chargers that I have?
Also Anyone know what Car mode is? It's been Enabling itself Without me actually physically doing it myself, and when I turn it off its right back on very next Reboot!
Oh yeah by the way...
Thanx for Everyones input!

BRICKED! Never thought it could happen to me

Well I think I finally bricked my Nexus S. What's weird is that it's been working fine. Had JellyBro 20120817 installed for the past few days with no issues. Last night I plugged my phone in to charge and went to bed. Woke up this morning and clicked the power on button to see what time it is and it showed just fine. 20 minutes later I went to check the time again and NOTHING. Pulled battery, tried every button combo, everything. My wife has a Nexus S also, so I tried her battery with the same results. No lights, vibrations, nothing. Plugged it into my computer to see if I could get any response and still nada. Tried Fastboot and device is not found. UGH. If anyone can give me any advice on what to try feel free to chime in. I've been around long enuff to realize that I'm pretty sure it's toast. Either way... it's been a nice run.

Take it off charge and pull the battery out. Let it sit for a while (1 hour at least) without the battery. Put your wife known working battery in and cross your fingers.

I don't imagine it shows as charging when plugged in? Otherwise I'd send it for repair or just buy a new phone. :/

No it doesn't show as charging at all. Won't find device in adb, no lights, no vibration when trying to power on, nothing. It does get warm when the battery is in it tho. And it is discharging somehow, because I tried my battery in my wifes phone and it showed 33 % when I know it had a full charge before it died. GNex is on its way.
i just have had same problem days ago , unfortunately i tried all , even Odin , just non-responsive
i also tried that unbrickable tool run under Ubuntu , still no good ...

Same Problem here. It was working fine on jelly bean and rooted with clock work recovery. I removed the battery out to change the sim and now it wont power on, fastboot doesn't work and the USB JIG also doesn't work, doesn't show the charging animated when plugged in.
i tried AdamOutlers Resurector tool, it didnt detect the phone, so i made the hardware mod and now it detect the phone, but still dead after the tool loads the files. but when i choose GALAXY S from the drop down menu, the tool and the phone, both shows download mode, heimdall detect the phone but doesnt work as it is not a GALAXY S.
At least now you have a reason to upgrade. But that sure sucks, if you still want to revive it you could give this a shot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecp8jKmm48k
Three people with Nexus S's with Jelly Been roms just spontaneously get bricked phones? Just flashed mine to CM10 Nightly yesterday...
Hmmmm
I'm not sure if I would call mine a true bricking since most bricks happen directly from a rom flash. Mine was actually working fine for a couple of days after my last flash and then suddenly stopped working. It was an almost 2 year old phone and heavily abused internally with almost daily rom/kernel flashes and overclocking. I think maybe it just got tired LOL. Oh well...we have 2 other Nexus S's in our house, so now we have a decent parts phone since externally the phone is flawless.
Try cleaning your the phone's usb slot with a toothbrush and medical alcohol. also after removing your battery, try pressing the power button for 10 Secs(without battery) this cleans any extra charges in your phone. Gd luck!
Sounds more like hardware failure than bricking.

i read something that is problme of bootloader that messes with hummingbird CPU or something , i don't know
i had flashed the latest bootloader and 4.1 once it came out , but then i back to 4.0.4 and decided wait for AOKP JB.
and , my phone was also unable to power up after i pull out and change a new battery ! , first of all i was thinking battery's unstable output current damaged hardware or something , but now i am more convinced it should be the problem of bootloader as i read before

[Q] Some really weird problem over here.

Once, i was halfway using whatsapp then phone turned off automatically, when I turn it back on i was able to boot up past the bootscreen until i got this: Refer to Picture 003.jpg
Then I did a complete reset via CWM. I even installed CNA 3.6.6 (I was using 3.5.0 before this)
Still no avail, do I've decided to flash back to 4.0.4 to see whether things are working out or not.
I did it via fastboot.
Same thing.
What could be the problem?
Do take note that even though in the picture I'm booting it up in safe mode but still no avail for normal mode.
And, when I'm charging my phone with the power switched off I'm getting this: Refer to Picture 004.jpg
Supposedly it's a battery icon that indicates charging activity but I'm getting a battery icon with (blinking) exclamation mark.
What's wrong?

Gonna try it soon as soon as my friend is with me. Anyways, the picture I've attached shows the shutting down popup.
When it first occured(and for the next few times)it's without the popup and i can't even pull down my notifications window. BUT the 4 buttons worked. they responded by vibrating.

warning! TL; DR post about what happened to my phone.
I've left my phone (accidentally) under heavy rain for almost an hour.
By the time I got my phone back it's still working, but with a (kinda) faulty loudspeaker.
Others went a-okay.
I turned off and let it stay put for everything inside to dry up then charge. Realized that I can't charge at all. I can't even connect to computer or whatnot. So I brought it to a service center. They told me it's mobo issue and I've decided not to fix it (cause my warranty's over)
That day when I brought it back from service center, miraculously I can charge my phone! was happy at first then I kept on charging. Then story continues as first post.

i bought my nexus from a man for 25$ because it wasnt able to charge and when u turned it on it just went stuck on the motion starting picture.
so i went to a technician and he told me to buy the usb port , i found the original port for nexus s on ebay, so he fixed it...
since then i am able to charge it (with a exclamation sign if its off) and i have even intalled every rom i have found here, via odin/fastboot/CWM, etc. but nothing... so it keeps on stucked on the starting picture, sometimes just SOMETIMES it went up like yours, *going up and saying/showing Android System icon, batterymetter on the upper part of the screen, middle screen; saying power off, shutting down, after some secs, vibrates and goes OFF.
only with slimbeam i got that behavior always turn it on.
p.s. the USB port was unable because phone have been wet (from the other owner hands)...
one thing, make sure the battery contact points are clean i know its dumb but it could help

Nexus S i9023 Android 4.1.2 Update
Yesterday i got OTA update 4.1.2 in my Nexus S i9023 in India. But after restarting the system for installation for some reason the update was not done. After hard booting the device when it logs on, it was showing 4.1.1. But when i am checking whether any system update is there, it is showing no update. How to get it again ????

Phone "just stopped working"?

Well... HTC One X running 3.2.7 > OTA update to 3.2.8... S-On, factory unlocked.
Has been running fine for 2 months or so now I believe. Today battery went to 0. Which has happened once or twice before. Plugged it in and the orange notification light was flashing (charging, but not usable yet). After an hour or so I held the power button to turn it on and the orange flashing light turned off. And now the phone won't turn on at all. Have still had it plugged in and try to turn on, hold bottom/both volume buttons while holding power... Hold power for 30+ seconds so as to allow it to completely force shutdown... and nothing. No orange flashing light, no screen on, no vibrate, nothing. When plugged in to my PC and I hold the power button for 10 sec it makes the "driver not found" sound. I have HTC USB drivers.
What the f*** happened?
Edit : After unplugging, the orange light now goes, off, on, off, on off (on for 1 second, off for 1 second).... forever.
Going to leave it charging overnight. **** better not be ****ing dead because it's off contract and I don't have the ****ing money to replace a phone because hitting 0% battery caused ****ing death.

What? Viper 3.2.8 is for the evita.
If it won't come on you may have been hit with the bug that quite a few others have experienced here where the phone bricks when the battery goes completely dead. If it's still under warranty I would suggest sending it back to HTC and they will probably give you a new phone. Or send it to mobile tech videos and they'll jtag it for about $60.

Doesn't matter. It's still under warranty. The phone isn't old enough to be out of warranty yet, it's release date was barely 1 year ago. I'm pretty sure the warranty is 2 years. They also can't void your warranty for running a custom ROM either, unless they can prove the ROM cause the failure which it doesn't sound like it did in your case. I'm pretty sure that holds true in the U.K., and definitely the U.S. The Magnuson Moss act is a powerful tool.
There aren't too many things (software wise) you can do to break this phone to the point where you need HTC to fix it. I, unfortunately, just did one of them to my phone. I'm praying repair is as nice as the support people. They were all awesome, although they wouldn't quote me a repair price even though I told them exactly what was wrong with it and how I broke it.
This is a known bug and has happened to bone stock phones. If you can't revive it, you should get a warranty replacement.

Warranty is 1 year. But you are correct, unless the OP bought his right after release, it would be barely over a year old. Any more recent than that, and he is still good.
Keep the phone on the wall charger (not charging over computer's USB port) overnight, and see if that helps. This usually does the trick with the random power drops some of us have seen on this device.
After leaving it charging all night it turns on. However it constantly either freezes and reboots at the splashscreen or just shows the HTC white screen for minutes on end. Got it to boot in to recovery and did factory reset. Got it to boot up and during set up after choosing my WiFi and inputting password then hitting next it rebooted again.
Now what?

Phone won't even turn on. This poses 2 problems.
1. I can't flash kernel or change voltages or anything.
2. Since the sticker fell off the back of my phone, I can't retrieve my IMEI number. Now what the hell do I do?

Pray
Was able to get my IMEI by going to the site where I bought my unlock code and logging in and checking purchases. Will this be enough for the repair people or will they need the sticker on the back to verify something? I emailed HTC and am awaiting response.
Okay latest update. I called HTC and for some stupid reason said I bought the phone used and they said they cant repair it then. I'll call back tomorrow and NOT tell them that.
In the mean time. I actually plugged it in and it turned on. First time got to HTC whitescreen then shut off. Second time got to the Viper XL splashscreen and then shut off.
Any chance this is still fixable?
I'm having the same issue. Left my phone unplugged when I went to bed last night, it had around 60% left. Woke this morning to find it completely dead and no light when I plug it in to indicate charging. Luckily I just got this in Nov or Dec so I should be able to get it replaced.

[Q] ~Guessing SDS?~

So about 2 weeks ago, i rooted my phone and flashed over the nightly version of CWM. Ran fine for about a week, afterwards i noticed a big battery drain. Then started the freezes, and finally the random restarting. During this time, it would commonly get my battery percentage wrong( Ex: It would say 20% but then die. I would turn it back on and it would say 5. Take out the battery, put it back in, and it would say something like 12%.) Yesterday, i had about 20% left, and it just turns off. Wont turn back on. I get home, plug it up, and its in a charging screen boot loop. Plug in-Go to charging screen-Turn off-repeat. It will do that repeatedly, as long as it's plugged in. I've looked it up, and it looks like it's the SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) and that Samsung can only fix it under warranty. The problem is, I didn't get this through a carrier contract, i bout it basically new online. Any help? Anyone have advice on how to fix it, or what to do?
