I have one of the original GS3's that came with the 'No Sim' error from the factory. I have since installed CM10.1 and now instead of the error the phone just reboots. It works fine on certain towers but there are some Verizon towers I get close to and I cant place a call or text without the phone rebooting. Is there a different kernel or anything that someone knows of that I can flash to help this? I am getting tired of only being able to use my phone in certain parts of town. I have ran several versions of CM10 with the same results. Currently on CM10.1 RC4. Thanks

1. Kernels don't have anything to with the radio signal the modem however does .
2. I have mentioned this to others that your location and how well designed the radio is determines how good or bad is your signal strength.
3. You can flash different modems to see if that will help and here it is:http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/modems

Thanks for the response. Was the original NO SIM issue due to the modem? Also, are there any of the modems on that list that are preferred over others?

I honestly don't know as I got this phone 4 months after its release so that issue was resolved by then. Like I said in my previous post that your location and how well built the radio is determines the overall signal strength so the modem might not help. I live in New York City so I don't experience bad signal strength in most areas in the city. In the end you have to try for yourself as someone living one area won't likely to have the same results as you.

After much reading, and stumbling over the same posts repeatedly, I must ask for help.

Checkrom RevoHD V4
CriskeloROM Gingerbreak v32
Currently have a Optus sim loaded into it, staying in Melbourne Australia.
Optus seems to be lousy, I've talked to several people who seem to agree. Since public perception is far from accurate, I cant really blame optus entirely. I havent tried any other SIM cards yet since I need the optus number at the moment.
I've tried quite a few ROMS and quite a few different Kernels, not being able to tell much of a difference in signal strength. The phone will have the 3g icon lit up, but refuse to do almost any activity. Then five minutes later in the same location it is working perfectly, with a ping of 147ms and download rate of 327.7kB/s (using Speedtest.net)
Since I am using KitchenPro I am able to change the modem easily, some dont work, others do. How do I narrow down which ones are best for the phone? The answer of "use it for a little while and you'll know" cant be the best answer. Is the carrier-shipped modem the best that is available? I've read the modem ref guide and it doesnt offer anything other than a list of letters and numbers. Some people have reported things working well with telstra on particular modems, but nothing on Optus.
1) Is a baseband or modem something that will either work, or not work? Or there a signal difference from one to the next.
2) I almost always have 3+ bars of connectivity for the cell service, it works fine, all the time, even with the modems that did not allow data connectivity the phone always seems to work. Does a modem package effect both cell service and data?
3) What would be the most effective method of testing a new modem?
4) Is there a guide somewhere that lists the guts behind the modem packages, ie frequency ranges, so that I can look up the carrier, and match it manually with a modem?
Please Help! With spotty services available, and no means of telling if my problems are carrier related or phone software issues, I find this quite frustrating.
Thanks for reading
Looking for some advice on Reception/Low signal loss
To clarify i am near a tower.
I used to have full bars no less then 3
I tried flashing different modem--no go
I tried flashing new rom---no go
I reverted to stock GB--no go
Symptoms all started after I was trying to switch over to XperiaSlim Rom. Dont think that rom had anything to do with it but I was on Audiophile before that.
My signal strength is usually over -100db now. Any friendly advice would be appreciated. I exhausted all i know at this point and Google doesn't exactly give anything that could be used for us like changing a radio.
Go to T-Mo and get a new SIM card. With the merger, the towers currently known to your old SIM card might be somewhat odd.
Thanks I'll head there today to get one but weird and merger? Im not in a MetroPCS area....but heres hoping its a Sim card issue
Edit: All of the sudden on GB ROM the reception is now back in mid -80's DB to high 90's and now receiving proper reception. I dont know how it got fixed but I'm sure it was Tmo that was borked. I'm on XperiaSlim with LB6 modem rockin JB ^_^

Hi everyone.
I owned a Nexus 5 one month ago, but unfortunately, it does not work as expected. On 4.4.0, I had multiple issues concerning network already (unable to switch to 3G networks only, very variable HSPA signal reception (from 4/4 bars to Edge exactly at the same place), ...). This issues were supposed to be fixed with 4.4.2 and most of them are, excepting HSPA signal which is still very weird. However 4.2.2 brings my phone another issue that I didn't noticed on 4.4.0 which is a very annoying and repetitive complete signal blackout (no reception at all (Edge/HSPA), even for emergency calls I guess). Signal drop can happen twice in an hour, twice in 10 minutes or may not happen at all 3-4-5 hours long. It's completely unpredictable. After a while, Edge signal (not HSPA !!) gets back by itself. If I wait 10-20 more minutes, HSPA comes back again, until it drops again.
Moreover, at phone boot, just after typing my PIN Code, it usually takes 2 or 3 minutes to catch a signal. Very slow isn't it ?
It does not seem to be a network issue, since my Samsung Galaxy S III doesn't encounter this using the same SIM card.
I read on Google forums and probably some XDA threads that I was not the only one to face this kind of network issues, even on 4.4.2, but issue description was each time a bit different from mine, thus I tought that it may be useful to post a new thread to describe precisely what was my problem.
Edit : My Nexus 5 is unlocked and rooted, but issue is present on untouched 4.2.2 also.
Edit 2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525583 is probably my issue.
Do no hesitate to answer if you're thinking that you have the same issue (or kind of) or if you think that you know something that may help.
Thank you .

You can flash the radio from version 4.4 that helps a lot, I'm at work just search this forum the directions are here, it's easy.

^^ He appears to be talking about the link below. You can flash different modems that may work. Some people say different modems helped but I've had no such luck. I've flashed every modem available and still don't have data almost everywhere I go. I have data at home but that doesn't really matter since I don't need my phone at home.

Did you try flashing your carrier's specific radio?
Team Nexus 5 sucks

Were would one find the carrier specific radio? I'm on T-Mobile but have only found the thread with modems. Nothing carrier specific.
Thanks for your answers. Unfortunately, flashing different modems does not seem to help .
i've read, the .15 is good with t-mobile.
i'm testing it today too. my problem is not only a signal drop, i have only edge too and my modem won't switch back to umts or hspa(+).
i'm in germany with t-mobile (congstar).
Hello,
I bought my Nexus 5 on the 11th of December 2013 and it had been working flawlessly ever since. Since last week, I started noticing the occasional signal drop and I'd be out of cell reception but would usually be back up within no time. However, yesterday, out of the blue I'm travelling on the highway and my signal strength disappears never to come back again. I've tried the following:
- Restore old backup (including EFS)
- Went back to stock from PA
- Upgraded to the latest radio
- Took back cover off to see if anything was wrong but found nothing.
- Tried another SIM card
Nothing worked. My SIM card works fine in another phone. Everything else such as WiFi and Bluetooth works flawlessly but I just don't get any reception.
This is very disappointing and I have my fingers crossed hoping someone can help me with this since I didn't plan on getting a new device for at least another year especially after paying $520 USD for my phone here in my country.
Thank you for looking.
im having a similar problem with the radio after the last few otas. im getting a lot of dropped calls on 3g aws...
im going to try to revert to an old radio as i don't think this is a hardware failing issue..

Flash stock firmware with fast boot. If its the same, its a carrier issue....call them to see. Or its hardware failure.
just wanted to post my fix for this issue - very disappointed with Google that i had to do this...my provider is mobilicity canada (3g aws band fyi)
flash krt01b radio from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514095
this is *not* a carrier or hardware issue (at least in my case)
seems others are having same issue
https://code.google.com/p/android/i...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=70878
Then it is a carrier issue....cause on Telus in Canada....never had an issue with any radio version. ?
telus would have a stronger overall signal but uses AWS band for lte which is different than mobilicitiy 3g aws...
I'm not disagreeing.... Just saying its the carrier....not Google.
See my point?

are you saying mobilicitiy is purposely weakening their cell signal cause they are almost bankrupt ?
i still blame google i had no issues with the radio before they borked it...

Just saying that unless many have the issue with the phone or radio, then its an issue.....if not, it isnt .
So in this case, it leaves hardware or carrier....assuming a stock flash didn't help.
If flashing another radio helps the OP...awesome!! But the new radio does work fine for the mass majority.
Hope it does work for him tho!
Hello everyone. I was hoping that some of you that are more knowledgeable about this stuff could help me out here. I recently flashed from CM 10.2 to KitKat (4.4.4), which everything went smoothly for the most part. However, I've noticed that my phone constantly has no service. I should probably state that I live in an area with very low service to begin with, but prior to the flash I was able to get at least a bar inside my house. Now, I'm unable to get anything.
The first thing I could think of to check was my settings in the phone. The data is enabled, CDMA Roaming mode is set to automatic, CDMA subscription is set to RUIM / SIM, and the Preferred Network Type was Global. I wasn't familiar with the global setting as I was used to seeing the LTE / CDMA / EvDo options there. So, when I clicked on it, it now gives LTE, 3g, 2g, 1x, and Global as options. I tried changing it to 3g, but the changes would not save that way. The only way I could get them to save was to power off the phone, take the sim card out and put it back in, and then reboot and switch them. Once i pick a new setting (which is now set on 3g), it locks it and I can't change it again without removing sim card.
When I look in About Phone > Status section, I'm seeing the network says searching for service. The mobile network type is unknown. The service state is out of service, and the mobile network state is disconnected.
Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? If so, I would truly appreciate any type of guidance you guys or gals could give me. Thanks!
I didn't read your entire post but myself and several others have reported signal issues after 4.4.4 flashes on all different ROM types. I think 4.4.4 is just picky about what firmware and baseband you're running. I flashed a few different RPM packages too but in the end I got lucky flashing the BLK3 modem and it seemed to fix my issues. I had noticeably poor signal strength most of the time and a couple times I would look down at my phone and I'd have no signal at all.
Maybe a dev or expert can shed some light on the root of the issue. I don't know enough about under the hood stuff to make an expert diagnosis.
Edit: The unanimous fix that everyone appears to agree on is to flash the MF1 AIO (all in one) package and then flash the ML1 modem only. Problem is finding a legit source for the MF1 aio package seems to be up in the air.
Like I said though, I didn't even do this. I was just trying all kinds of combinations of modems/aio's/ and rpm's and I got lucky. 2 days now with a solid signal at all times. LTE speeds are blazing too, 45 down and 10 up.
Check ur imei number. Or flash a backup and see if that fixes ur problem.
