Hello xda community. I recently won a bid for a galaxy s 2 skyrocket on ebay. When I got the phone I was not able to connect to any mobile net works, I have at&t. I don't know where to start to trouble shoot the problem. I don't know if it is a hardware or firmware issue, though I've flashed many roms kernels and radios trying to fix the issue. I can connect to the microcell in my house but i can't get signal anywhere else I go. Any ideas? sugguestions? tips? The guy I bought the phone from said he'd refund my money if I return the phone, but I don't want to have to return it if there is nothing wrong with it.
Thanks in advance.
You have an active sim card, right? If so it sounds like a hardware issue.

Does it have a custom ROM? If it is a 4.2.2 variant, you may want to install the UCMC 1 radio.

Yes, I actually went to an att store to get a new sim to make sure it wasn't the sim.

I can't seem to get any service from my carrier. The phone can get reception/signal, it's just the phone displays No Service from the pull down notifications. And when I go into mobile settings and try to search for a network or anything, It says "Error while searching for networks." Is this the antenna problem? Would I have to open up the phone and adjust something? btw does anyone know where the antenna is located at?

Sounds like a hardware defect or Sim card issue.

I unlocked the sidekick, tried a ATT simcard got good reception like Tmobile, but still no service. Do you know where the antenna is in the sidekick?
Its probally an antena prob because surprisingly I droped my old samsung gravity smart in water by accident and my first thought was to take the battery out and let it dry, that succeeded on letting me turn it on fully but I had no reception what so ever which is odd but this sounds off topic a lil but I ended up bricking it o.o normaly t-mobile themselfs sometimes making horrible phones don't get me wrong their good but most of them are 2.2 froyo ._.

I've had a problem with my skyrocket for quite some time now. No matter which radio, ROM, or kernel I use the data will be hit and miss and so won't phone calls and messaging. I've already had one skyrocket replaced because of this issue and even got a replacement SIM card to no avail. I get full bars of H+ service. I've tried adding different APNs as well. The AT&T store is obviously stumped (they are basically worthless) and phone support is no better. I was wondering if anyone knew of this problem and what caused it or a way to fix it.

To be real I doubt I your got a dud phone 2x I would try to get ur carrier to change it to something else... because all those symptons point to a bad antenna on a phone

I will take it to them and try to get a replacement or a different phone. I got my first one within the 30 day return period but I have had my current phone for about two months. I also forgot to mention that if I throw it against the wall or smack it against my hand, the message will usually go through. Now, I don't usually go throwing my electronics around haha. I only did this after it started happening and that always seemed to make it work.

I got really tired of slamming mine against the wall. I started taking a screenshot of my text and then emailing it....its all good now.

I just got my phone back from mobiletechvideos JTAG service. Since then, my phone struggles to hold WiFi and 3g. It very rarely pulls 4g. I have tried a factory reset. Also restored my IMEI backup just in case. I have an extra micro sim arriving today. I'm just wondering if I could be missing something simple or is my phone royally screwed?

Sounds like your radio.
They probably updated your baseband to MF1, I'd try to use mb1 firmware to see if that fixes your reception problem.

Thanks for the fast response! I flashed the MB1 firmware and still have poor signal. I'm starting to get depressed as this went from the best phone I've ever owned to the worst.

I did take the phone apart and found that the WiFi connection was loose. I corrected that. I started the phone back up and held the Sim card down in the slot while booting and the phone miraculously got 41asu.....for about 5 minutes and now its holding at a steady 2asu. So, would there definitely be something wrong with the Sim card? Or could the Sim port be going as well? Is there a way to test the Sim connectivity in the phone settings?

The lower the asu the better, in contrast to a higher dbm is a better signal.
2 asu is a pretty strong signal, you should be around -80 dbm.
Edit; Nevermind I mixed it up, a higher asu is better. I still think it's radio related though, but changing your sim card is an easy potential fix.

Well....sim card didn't work. Next I'm going to Odin back to pure stock and see if that helps. I'm starting to think it may be something in the NV items or hardware related. Hope I'm wrong though.

Hi David,
Often times when devices become bricked, it results in your NV items being damaged and causes this problem. Here is a guide that highlights this issue, and will tell you how to remedy the situation.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/"
ugh. I really dont want to go messing around with the NV items if that is the case. Im in the process of flashing with ODIN now. I'll update if that works or not.
What is your IEM Showing?
If its been erased, then ODIN to stock firmware probably won;t fix that,
but, have you check your mobile network setting to see if you are on the correct network?
If you are with Verizon it should be set to CDMA, not GSM.

Software is not intermittent. Hardware can be. You may have a broken or loose antenna cable or connector inside the phone.

Found it!!!!! I took the phone apart one last time and found that one of the antenna contacts was bent and not touching the backplate. I bent it back and I'm getting perfect signal. Thank you guys for the input and feedback!

Hi David,
I'm glad to hear you resolved this issue. This is quite surprising as the S3 is relatively easy to work on internally and we had never had this issue after working on one. I'll take note of this in case it's ever observed in the future. In the mean time, anyone ever having a questions regarding their order, just call us at 657-444-JTAG. Rock on buddy!

Probably, you placed a non verizon sim card. This app is detecting a type of card and is reportin this. You can either stop app, through Apps manager or freeze it through Titanium backup.
Or, maybe you did something else.
Or maybe something is wrong with the sim?

Don't know the app and this sim is fine.
I got it right at the Verizon store
. Any ideas?

So did unlocking the bootloader fix this? Getting the sim from the store doesn't make the sim error proof. They can go bad. Anyways, I'm assuming that if you did the factory reset mentioned in your other thread and are still seeing this then it's either a problem with the sim or the phone.

First of all, I'm stock and running faux kernel. I started experiencing this problem yesterday when I had no data and I was outside (Where I usually get 4g speeds). Now I either get 1x data speeds or none. Is there any solution for this problem like hard reseting or something

That sounds like either a Verizon problem, or sometimes your phone wants to revert to an evdo state if it can't get a 3g or 4g signal.
Download the phone info app, and open it and click device information, make sure it says lte/cdma/evdo and not evdo only.
Sometimes the setting won't stick, so in that case I would either flash a new rom or go back to stock with Odin, ota update, and reroot again.
If it says lte/cdma/evdo, then I think it has something to do with verizons end.

Actually I tried something else... I took my sim card out of my s3 and put it into a friends verizon s3 and the data didn't work on his phone but once I put his sim card onto my s3, I had 4g and many speeds I thought never existed. So what does that mean?

Pulling your SIM helped your phone to relock onto Verizon towers. It just essentially resetted the prl, glad you got it working fairly easily.

Not exactly, because my s3 for some reason got 4g and 3g when I inserted my friends SIM card onto mine but on his s3, his data was acting like mine because he had my SIM in his s3... so that draws me in one conclusion, my SIM is damaged
