PlayApks.com seems the best one among all.
To be honest, why you need to download .apk files, when everything's available in Google Play.
Google Play Store. They are offering most apps that you can buy or download for free (if the free version exists).

I have tried via the market and the Play site through google, and apparently the X10 is not a supported device. I am dubious about that.

the service is block by Google. use VPN + Market enabler APP to change the service provider. remember to clean Google play store's data and cache beforehand.
Bbm for Android was due to release today. But I can't spot it on the play store. Has anyone downloaded it?

Just search & Download .apk file of that particular apps/game from any trusted site or from 4share & install it directly to ur device.
eg for templerun2 game search templerun2.apk on web...

You should flash Gapps too after flashing the rom in order for the play store and other google services to work.
The Gapps for kitkat can be found in this thread.

Sounds like you just need the Google Play Services installed. I suggest you look here - Play Services / Play Games Updater
Please do a backup before doing any modifications, furthermore any other questions you have relating to those files can be posted in that thread and they will be answered.
