[Q] nexus s keeps booting up then shutting off by itself over and over - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My nexus s keeps booting up like normal but then once it gets to my lock screen it shuts off by itself within 5 seconds. Sometimes I manage to put my password in and get onto my main screen but that's as far as I can get before it shuts off again. This continues repeatedly till the battery dies, turning on and shutting off by itself. This has been going on for 2 days now, since my phone died while at work and got home and charged it. When I took it off the charger when it showed a full charge it started happening, turning on and shutting off by itself and when the phone would turn on it would show low battery. As you may know this phone only has internal memory (no memory card slot). So what I'm trying to do is get my pictures and videos off of the internal memory before I do a hard reset which is what the sprint repair store told me was my only option to fix the phone but I would lose everything on there and there's absolutely no way to recover my pics and videos cuz the phone doesn't stay on long enough. Does anyone have any suggestions at all on how I could fix my phone WITHOUT doing a hard reset? I'm hoping to not lose these precious memories so I'd like to keep that as a very, very last resort. Any suggestions would be helpful and very much appreciated...

Bootloop... You flashed something wrong, modded/tweaked something wrong or overclocked and it wasn't stable... You need to go into recovery and do a CLEAN install of your rom and/or kernel.. if you used a mod/tweak this could have caused it... If overclocking DO NOT check to keep the settings after a reboot unless you are sure that these settings are stable..

im not sure what exactly i did but i havent changed anything from what originally came with the phone. (im still running on gingerbread) i had my phone on airplane mode so my battery wouldnt die while i was at work and somehow my phone died anyway then i put it on the charger when i got home and let it charge fully then turned it on and from the time i turned it on till now its been shutting off and turning on by itself. i guess the repair store told me its recycling itself?

Try booting into recovery.. Volume + and Power.. use the volume keys to scroll and power to enter.. the menu has an option for recovery (this does not do anything to your phone).. You may see a dead android,.. DON'T PANIC.. this is perfectly normal, you didn't break anything.. try pressing the volume up, then power, wait a sec and do it again.. (I always had an issue with the "stock recovery") the phone may power off or try to reboot.. (been a while, kinda fuzzy on this).. be persistent and keep retrying the fore mentioned steps and you should get a recovery menu.. Phew... Now the sad bit, you don't have any files you need on your phone.. I don't know if the stock recovery works with usb mounting, but it might.. try it.. if it does then download a custom recovery, I suggest the one in my signature, and copy from computer to phone using the usb.. in the recovery menu, after the transfer is complete, go to install / install from sd / choose the zip that you just put on your sd card / accept / and if you get this far then.. Reboot recovery, don't worry, nothing broken (yet).. lol.. In your new recovery, assuming it's the one I said, go to the advanced menu, (this is a touch version, so you don't need to use the volume keys) and select "fix permissions".. ... .. and reboot.. WORKED???
All is not lost (yet).. try wiping (ONLY) cache and dalvik(under advanced menu).. and reboot.. WORKED??
Okay, so if you are reading down here, either you are bored, or the above steps failed..
Use this program, read the forum as well..

You can keep your phone 100% stock, but you'll need to unlock it to fix it, then you can lock it back up if you'd like.. Not necessary though.. You might think about just installing a custom rom or upgrading to jb.. OOooh the possibilities..
But here's the problem, remember the (yet).. if you have come this far down in steps to restore your phone..
ALL YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST!!!

mentioning unlocking my phone... i did come across a menu that was a "unlock bootloader". but it said i would have to do a factory data reset...wouldnt that wipe my memory completely?

The first steps won't.. if you get to the unlock stage then yes.. As long as you keep it locked, you'll be fine.. If it won't let you flash a custom recovery, you can try the above steps in the stock...

Won't stay on, or the screen turns off.. ?? does the computer give a pop-up message saying that you had an issue when copy/pasting the file to the phone..??
Remember that we are working from recovery, not with the phone fully booted into your android os..

my comp isnt picking up my phone via usb...
update: now my phone isnt turning on at all, even when plugged in to charge or via usb... so does that mean im out of luck now..?

My nexus s has the same issue
brethren, I am sorry to drop in on the discussion like this but I don’t know where to get an answer from. My Nexus S (phone) has had a problem recently, it just keeps on turning on and off and mentions the “type password to decrypt storage”, if it remains on. I tried to factory reset the phone through the steps mentioned in the blog here:
1. Power off
2. Hold Volume + , volume - and power
You should get a green android image with the body opened with "Start" on the screen
3. Press Down till you get to recovery mode
4. Press power
Phone will reboot. You will then get same image of android (smaller) with red warning triangle
5. Wait a minute or two and then press volume + and power (not sure exactly what I did for this maybe it's just waiting)
6. Use volume down to select wipe data/factory reset and hit power
Select Yes - delete all user data and hit power
7. Once done select reboot system now and hit power
You are now back to zero and can start again
But it does not work. I will be obliged if someone helps me out
Thanks

[Q] If you can help me, please do

Ok be prepared, this post may be rather long winded however I will try my best to prevent that. I have a Tmobile G2x I purchased on launch date. Ive not attempted to Root, change roms, or anything of the sort. (as much as I always wanted to, I always felt that my skills were not good enough to attempt these ideas no matter how easy they may seem. I just did not want to be the cause of screwing up my phone that I paid dearly for)
So I have a friend who claims to be the master (of disaster so it turns out) of rooting androids and such. He stops by my house just to hang out and eventualy convinces me to let him root my phone and install CM7. Within a few minutes the phone was rooted (super1click) and was running CM7 release candidate. (I really dont know what all these things truly are but I drilled him for answers once he jacked up my phone and left me with a half-bricked phone) So he installed Rom manager and convinced me to upgrade to the premium version via marketplace so I did. He was then showing me how easy it was to flash new roms at the touch of a few buttons. He put on some other rom which looked like CM7 but claimed to have extra tweaks. It worked fine. A few minutes later he put on some Faux Rom which gave a boot up screen like my old Nexus One did. (Multicolored X) It seemed to work fine as well. Then he said lets check out the nightly CM7 Rom so he put it on. (however I dont think it ever actually put CM7 back on.-still on Faux?) Thats when things got crazy.
Now I get the com.google.process.gapps force close message all the time. He tried to fix it for 4 hours and finally gave up. Here is what I know he/we tried: After searching the internet for hours we tried everyone elses ideas. Clearing calenders cashes, un syncing, etc. We did about 40 factory resets. We have tried to install my backup (which was from BEFORE he even touched my phone) and upon holding both volume rockers and plugging in USB (no battery installed) and it still does nothing. Windows recognizes device but phone screen stays black. Tried Debug mode while doing this as well. If we hold the volume down button and power the little install bar comes on the screen and it does its thing (whatever that is) and goes right back to the way it was. I keep getting the gapps message all the time. After factory reset I cant even type in my gmail address to start the initial setup of the phone. The force close keeps cutting me off. If I type fast, I can sync the account but I cant use market whatsoever. Tried installing Rom manager to re-flash but just sticks at starting download and gapps pops up again.
My son is starting school tomorrow and he has a medical condition. I NEED this phone to communicate with the school nurse via emails and such. As of now I can only text, call, or surf web all while dodging force closes. If ANYONE out there can please help me get my phone back to normal Id greatly appreciate it. Im sure its something easy but as I said before, Im not good at this thing and thats why I never attempted it myself. Your welcome to submit answers here or PM me your phone # if you want to walk me through it on the phone. (I have a landline phone to talk to you on) Thanks in advance for everyones time and Im sorry this ended up being so long.
Download latest Gapps.zip from Cyanogen site to your phone's SD card, boot into recovery, wipe data and cache then flash the Gapps.zip file. Let me know if this helps.
I will try this now. Thank you
Im unable to get anywhere. It still has stock recovery and I cannot get to the screen where I can wipe. Im not great at this sort of thing but Im trying.

i think you would be better off starting from scratch
1. remove your sd card from your phone and plug it in your computer
2. download the latest rom here
3. download gapps from the download links at the bottom of this page
4. transfer both files onto the sd card and put it back into your phone.
5. with your phone off, boot your phone into recovery by holding vol down+power
6. wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
7. flash only the cm7 file
8. reboot normally
9. reboot into recovery
10. flash gapps
11. reboot normally
after you flash one file, it is highly recommended that you reboot before you flash another file (if your friend didnt do this, this may have been the problem)

[Q] Accidental Update, Now Frozen - Please Help

This morning in my half-awake state I accidentally pressed "OK" to my phone asking me to go ahead with the (I'm guessing) 2.3.6 update. I KNEW I would end up doing something stupid like that. GRR!!
Anyway, the phone then launched itself into a white screen with blue text saying that it is doing the update, but nothing happens and it appears to be frozen.
I am rooted and was trying to avoid this update; like I said, I was half-awake.
I can't even get it to boot into download/recovery mode, it always goes straight to the white screen. Hopefully this isn't a double post; I checked here and google first but couldn't find anything for this phone. I'm really at a loss here. I have Titanium Backup and I got an external SD card, but I'm not sure if I actually backed up the apps to the external card (new to TB). I did a Kies contacts backup a few days ago so that at least is safe.
Is there any hope for my phone? If I can just get it back to a working state, I can live with my apps' data being erased. Any help appreciated.
Thank you!
Doh... sorry to hear that.. are you also running a custom rom, or customized ATT rom (I have the stock rom from the developers forums over the standard root after having tried a few custom roms).
I got the update message as well this morning, but I postponed it for 8 hours, however I am unable to get rid of the stupid notification, and am curious if after the 8 hours, it will force the update or let me postpone it agian (that will get annoying fast if I cannot disable the OTA update..)
I'd like to know how to cancel the update as well. I have it sitting in my notification bar. >_<

I'm still running stock 2.3.5. All I've had time to do is root and TB apps, haven't had the chance to play around with ROMs yet for this phone.
Yeah I postponed it for 8 hours, too. The 8hrs must have expired right as my alarm went off because the "Install this update?" message popped up and I hit it, thinking it was the snooze button -_-
Let me know if there's any way to get off of this screen my phone is stuck on! And then disable the obnoxious message for good.
Thanks again =)

I have about 10-15 times since it first happened this morning. I also tried taking out the SIM and microSD cards. It's the only way I can get it to stay off to try to boot to recovery mode (which it still won't boot into); if I hold the power button to turn it off it just resets back into the white Software Update Screen (won't stay off).
Has anyone successfully applied this update yet?
Any other ideas? I appreciate the feedback so far!
Similar thing happened to me. I pulled the battery and booted in to CWM just fine. Restored from there.

I don't believe I have CWM installed? How would I have known if I did? When I volume up + volume down + power and wait until the Samsung logo comes up it boots back to the white screen. Maybe I'm doing that process wrong?
Same thing happened to me this morning!
almost identical story
I've tried literally every combination to get to the reboot screen. ugh :'(

I haven't been rooting as much as some of the guys here, but I think if you take the battery out and it won't boot back even into recovery, you're hard-bricked and you're gonna have to start from scratch with a fresh stock rom. Go to download mode (turn off, hold vol up + down, insert powered usb cable) and put a stock rom back on using odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
You will basically get back to what your phone was when you took it out of the box and you'll have to install everything, your data (other than the data that is on a microSD card) won't be there.
If you have a backup that you did with CWM, then you can restore the backup after you do all this.
I think you got unlucky with the worst case scenario of what shouldn't happen during an update.
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try when I get home from work and will let you guys know how it goes.
For the future, is it generally recommended to de-root before doing any straight carrier update? Or is this just a total fluke that some of us are experiencing?
Will adb recognize your phone? If it does just adb reboot recovery

AMAZING!! Thank you so much! Not only is my phone up and working but the update has installed!
I learned the following:
-you pretty much need a pc (not a mac) to do all the downloads correctly. I used a friends.
-to get your phone into download mode when it's frozen from the update, you have to hold down either vol + AND vol - (or just vol -) as well as the power button, simultaneously hold down power and also simultaneously plug in the usb. Then let go of the power button and remain holding down one or the two volume buttons.
THIS WAS JUST WITH MY SKYROCKET EXPERIENCE
I'm so happy. Thank you LucidMike
This just happened to my friend's phone. White screen no matter what. Stock everything, too. She's pretty bummed that there's no way to recover the videos and pictures on her phone before resetting it. Apparently she went to AT&T and they couldn't figure it out. They called tech support for her and THEY couldn't figure it out. She's currently on the phone with Samsung, but I doubt they'll be able to help either.

AHHH!! Tell her to hang up the phone right now!! Use this method to fix her phone!! All of her data will still be there after it's done! After the process is complete, back it up to a computer (enable USB storage and just copy + paste and I used Kies to copy my contacts) and THEN do a full factory reset (reset recommended by everyone to ensure smooth function of phone). The method in the link will return her to the original stock version; I believe it may trip a counter that AT&T can use to determine if you've hacked your phone, but if you want a working phone...and there's also a chance that it WON'T trip the counter (some people say it did and some say it hasn't).
EDIT: Pictures and videos that I took with the phone are saved in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera, so you know where to copy her stuff from.

I'm trying to fix my boyfriend's phone (he actually didn't hack/root it or anything...but yesterday's update messed up his phone so it was stuck in the "SOFTWARE UPDATE" and "Loading..." frozen white screen). We tried taking out the battery, restarting it, everything. I tried your method of holding all three buttons while plugging in the USB and then letting go of the power button. What do you press when it asks you if you want to continue (up vol +) or cancel (vol -)? I chose vol -, and when it took me back to the white screen, I did it again and pressed vol +. Now I'm on a ODIN MODE page...will this affect his warranty or anything? What do I do next?
You need to have odin on your pc and the stock .tar and flash it. Here go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1509978

Thanks! I read on the first page of the thread that it needs to be rooted though? This phone is brand new and never been rooted or hacked...will doing this void the warranty or anything unpleasant? (I'm the one that likes hacking my devices like my Nook Color...my boyfriend is a little more paranoid and would rather have it stay covered under warranty )
No actually. Thats incorrect..the stock tar. Is just as it sounds. The stock firmware the phone comes with.....dont need to be rooted to use odin. Actually if u odn the stock tar. It removes root.

[Q] Bootloop! Tried ODIN

Hi,
So I got a bootloop after wiping battery status on recovery. But first I wiped cache and dalvik cache (i dont know why i did this). Now, Im on a boot loop and I cant even turn the phone off. I take the battery out and plug it back in and it just loops. Same with taking the battery out and plugging a usb. SO I successfully got to Download mode and got ODIN to recognize the phone. I installed Clockwork
Mod Touch 5.8.1.3 Odin tar. and it says it was succesful, but no luck! Still loops. Is there another .TAR file I can install???
PS: I cant get into Recovery because phone does not turn off.
Please any input is much appreciated, this is driving me nuts.
Wiping battery stats, cache and Dalvik shouldn't cause a bootloop. Wiping Dalvik does cause a very long boot cycle, though, as it causes the system to think it's got all-new apps, and it has to re-process and re-cache them. Are you sure that's not what's going on? How long are you letting it sit for?
Also, are you sure you don't have a stuck power button? I doubt it because you were able to get into download mode and flash a recovery img, but have you tried mashing the button down over and over, even cleaning around the edges of the button with a needle?

U should definitely go back to stock via odin first before even trying to install cwm and flashing a custom rom.

I left it on the loop for about 2:30 hours. Still nothing- I cleaned around the power button by taking the case off. Everything looked fine but it still loops. Once I was able to get to Recovery mode but I could only scroll down one line before the phone flashes and goes back to the first command line. This leads me to believe that theres something wrong with the power button, its stuck or a short. Also, I still can't turn if off, as soon as I put the battery in- it turns on w/o me pressing the power button.
I think its a gonner...

It's alive! Finally i got it to boot up. I don't know how or why. I tried to go to Recover mode and this time I got in and was able to cycle through the menu. I reinstalled the latest ROM I used and it booted up. Strange.... but I'm happy.

Glad you got back into your phone. I am starting to see this happening a lot lately with ROMS. Which particular one were / are you on when it started the boot loop?

Sounds similar to what I just went through... Except I didnt do anything in recovery before mine started looping. Curious to know what rom you were running as well.

I was on the Seanscreamz' ICS ROM. I never had a problem with his ROMs before and I've been using them for about a year. They are pretty solid and I recommend them. It had to do something with me wiping caches and wiping battery stats because it happened shortly after. But I'm just guessing.

I'm trying to wrap my head around that, and not coming up with anything valid. Wiping the caches would cause a much longer boot time, battery stats, at most should only cause you to need to remove and reinsert the battery.
Just about the only thing I could come up with would be that when you wiped the caches, was that your phone was trying to reload all that data back into the cache and was getting brain dead.
More information is needed from others that have had the same issue, on the same ROM, or different does not matter, but detailed info as to what exactly was done prior to the boot loop issues.
If my phone gets stuck in a boot loop, usually after I flash someting in Odin or whatever, if I hit factory reset it fixes itself.
It doesn't bother me since all my stuff is backed up though.
You should Odin back to stock then flash cwm

just got a phone off of craigslist.. saw that it booted up, so i figured i might be able to fix it. cost me $100.
just finished ODINing it, but it just continues to bootlop. not sure what to do next.
Flash a recovery in Odin and see if you can enter recovery. Wipe data/factory reset if you get there.

already did that.. flashed CWM, ran recovery and installed rom. no go. now i see the cyanogen boot screen, but it won't get past that. this is kind of strange.
i think the issue with this phone is hardware related. constantly the phone turns itself off. i eventually was able to get stock rom to work (not sure how), but it goes haywire. wifi works, but for whatever reason, i can't download from the play store.
also, when im in CWM.. it reboots randomly. sometimse pressing the power button hits twice too. my old i777 has gone haywire too.. i might have to rethink what i will be choosing for my next phone.

I did what I could to try to replicate your situation. Which version of CWM are you installing? I went through several different versions up to the latest and found that the phone was having an issue with CWM itself. (possibly corrupted driver, but not 100% sure on that, as the phone does get recognized by the computers.)
But when I got to the latest CWM, and it started doing similar to yours, what I did was the following.
#1 : reinstall drivers
#2 : plugged the phone into the USB 2.0 slot on my laptop.
#3 : removed the battery, sim card, SD card
#4 : tried to power on the phone holding the power button for approximately 20 seconds. (nothing)
#5 : put in the battery while still plugged in, and powered on.
#6 : After phone booted up, and computer recognized the phone, I removed the battery. Phone stayed on.
#7 : waited while the computer re installed the ADB drivers, after driver install success, I unplugged the phone. Of course it powered down.
#8 : Restarted the laptop, put the battery back in the phone, and held vol + and - and power. Phone rebooted into recovery, but got into a boot loop when trying to recover.
#9 : downloaded TWRP recovery and put it on the SD card for the phone. Restarted the phone into recovery and installed TWRP recovery.
#10 : Rebooted phone into TWRP recovery. wiped all cache, installed latest STOCK ROOTED ROM.
The phone has been stable and working just fine, no wifi or blue tooth issues, calls are as normal, texting is as normal. LTE speeds as normal.
I have since switched all my devices over to TWRP recovery and have had ZERO issues.

When I power off and and press the power button, all I get is the progress wheel and an empty battery logo, over and over. Remove battery, count to 10, reinsert battery, after a couple of seconds the progress wheel then nothing.Press and hold power button same as previous. I can not enter recovery, I can enter download and that's the only way I can boot currently is by re-flashing with ODIN the 1997UCLB3.tar.md5. I can reboot with adb reboot. (Nothing happens when I use the 3 button to get into recovery since before the first Odin Flash.)
History: First occurrence Thursday 2/21/13 with no charging when plugged into the charger (3 tried) Read most of the posts here regarding no charge and boot loop (never got to SAMSUNG logo). Downloaded ODIN and the above ROM and re-flashed when my phone booted, I had everything and was rooted. I was happy until I turned it off and tried to turn back on. same progress wheel and empty battery, I re-flashed and did a hard reset, re-flashed and now my data was gone, reinstalled some things, turned the phone off, same no start. Used heimdall back to stock and when running, as expected, but when off, no start.
Yesterday I downloaded SDK and could ADB reboot. Then I dismantled my phone and cleaned what little just had gotten inside, inspected the power button with magnification and noted nothing wrong reassembled inserted battery and pressed power, same results. Re-flashed to get up and tested all functions which seem to working. I have dropped the phone intentionally several time to no avail.
I can turn the screen off with the power button and wake it up. I can lock the camera with the power button and wand unlock it. I don't know if there is an additional circuit connected to the power button for start and I really need to re-solder ( a little scary for me) with a sharp tip and steady hand. I am considering purchasing a cracked screen phone on eBay and swapping mother boards.
At present, I just don't turn the phone off and use Airplane mode at night. I appreciate the work that I see on this forum and will be grateful for any solutions.

Since that date: I have factory reset a few times due to rebooting via download mode and flashing via Odin because upon reflash I lose my mobile connectivity (No wireless service, IMEI as if the Sim was not in) Reset fixed that but of course I had to reinstall all my Apps, google acct. etc (My restore will not come up to clear cache and reboot. I do not have a Recovery mode nor a back up and numerous attempts to get CWM have failed.
I do not intend to turn this phone off until I get a replacement which should be in my hands Tuesday. I am asking for a clean GB rom for Odin that will let me reboot without changing anything. I have jscott30's unbrick Roms that have gotten me where I am and don't want to reflash back to stock anymore, Thanks a 1 to the 1oth power jscott 30 and to qkster for his guides. Without the recovery, I am at a loss of what to do. So I will be cool with a point to a clean UCLB3 Rom to reflash should my phone freeze before Tuesday
Thanks and Make a woman Happy today for Valentines
After you go back to stock and flash a working cwm kernel make sure you release power on logo keep holding vol buttons for at least a min, sometimes it takes a few.I'm sure you did but some people don't.

Thanks, but I never get to the LOGO.
I tried to flash a CWM kernal and it failed with an error on reboot about something not being formatted, At each "return to stock" Odin, I select the format button and since I can't get to recovery on my own, use the Settings, Privacy, Factory reset with Fromat USB, I have the 1997UCLB3-roo.tar.md5 that I will use if my phone turns off or goes dead to reflash back to life.

if you can use odin,
flash jesse's option c.
this will give you the base rom with lidroid boot into recovery option
download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1702026
flash it in cwm. use the back up the whole rom option.
this will back up just about your whole setup at any one point and make restoring easier.
you had mention about not being able to get into recovery...
what i was wondering is: while running the rom, if you use the pull down status bar menu, go to the far right, there are some reboot options..one of which is recovery..what happens if you choose that option?
Thanks qkster!
I think I tried Option C a couple of days ago and something didn't go right. I figured it was because I couldn't wipe the cache in recovery. I had aslso attempted your kernal flash using the program you recommended. On reboot I got the something not formatted right. I had used my laptop and USB to copy the kernal file to a folder I made in the Infuse. But to be clear. Since I can't clear the caches in recovery, just flas option c, selecting PDA? (No PIT or phone?)
I do want to get the C.
As for the infuse Toolkit, you mean after I get CWM vis Jesse's option C?
You ask about the pull down status bar "when running ROM" is that in ODIN it self? I am not sure where you mean,
Thanks for your patience,

I'm wondering if you may have several things confuse..or at least the terminology anyway.
In order to flash Jesse's option C, you have to be in DOWNLOAD mode (DL or dl) and flashed with Odin on your PC.
When you have the phone running, if you touch the top of the screen and pull it down, you have the status bar menu. You can sweep the icons to the right for additional options.
if you are looking to wipe cache for what ever reason, here is one option without using recovery menu:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuaW5mb2xpZmUuY2FjaGUiXQ..
if you are looking for an easy way to get into recovery, here is another app:

It's most likely my attempt to communicate with unfamiliar terms:
I can and always have been able to get into Download Mode, and flashed Jesse's C via Odin that way. Originally back at the beginning, It was Odin and Jesse's B that got my phone up. but it didn't solve the problem of not being able to turn the phone on with the power button. It was Wednesday evening that I attempted to load the kernel you had to add CWM, that's when it failed and then the Jesse C failed on Odin and I had no wireless connection or IMEI etc. Back to your unbrick then the factory reset with phone running and using the Privacy menu.
Until I downloaded the Quick Boot at your recommendation, I have not been able to enter Recovery from a phone in the off status. (Recovey ran at the end of each Odin flash). Thanks also for the Cache Cleaner.
Now when I pull down my top bar, nothing scrolls left to right or right to left and I don't ever recall seeing that happen in the last 1.5 years.MIne just shows L-R Wifi; Blue T; GPS; Flight Mode; Screen rotation.
Now I am good as long as the phone doesn't freeze and I have to remove the battery. I have in those cases I have re flashed Jesse's B to bring the phone up. Only the last time I ended up with no wireless (No Sim recognized and it was installed), and I went back to stock to regain it. So I am a bit paranoid about re-flashing anything new now. But knowing me I will before the weekend is done. The Reboot app is what I have been trying to figure out how to do. When I get the new phone and get it up and running and stable, I'll attempt to re melt the on button solder and possible the USB connector solder too. USB connection now dies if the screen time out turns the screen off. (If i keep the screen alive by doodling on it no problem transferring files.)
Thanks for your help I am a bit compulsive so all of this is my current obsession.:laugh:

you're right about the status bar..looking over jesse's description, you would have to flash the lidroid as an extra
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698972
there is something odd about your phone though...possible hardware issues...you should not have to keep screen on to complete a background task.
under Display..there should be an option to keep the screen on longer than default if you it

I do believe it's hardware too.

I set it on 2 minutes and touch the screen often. Funny it doesn't have an issue in DL mode, Sometimes I wiil have SUB Connected and no charging and It'll connect in the back ground, lose connection repeatedly and all of a sudden show the charging Icon, which I haven't see since all this began 9 days ago.
This phone has had some big drops. last one about 4 days before this began, vibrated off my table saw onto the concrete floor,
Thanks.
New phone works as advertised

Ok eBay phone arrived this afternoon. Factory reset, Odined, Jesse's C option. Yeah, CWM recover. I loaded most of my programs and backed up my ROm. I will experiment on my old one now.
New thing happening. I still can't start the phone from Off. BUT if I plug in the charger and hold down the on button and the down volume button after a few cycles of the dead battery icon, I get a charging icon and the phone is charging. Now with that icon working I can hold the power button down and the phone starts. Charger or USB need to be plugged in for that to work.
Update on the Start button.

Thursday Update:
Recap of current state:
Factory Reset from phone/security/fatory reset.
Flashed Jesse's C option with odin https://www.facebook.com/jennifer.waddell.963/photos_stream?ref=ts and let it boot all the way. Next I down loaded Quickboot (see qksters link above) and restarted in Recovery. Voila Red CWM. Cleared cache; factory reset; Advanced cleared davlik cache. Rebooted and let it fully load. Turned off to enter download.mode and Odined a second time Option C.Everything looked good on all accounts, reentered Google data etc. like a factory reset requires. Re installed Quickboot and booted to CWM and backed up my ROM.
I turned the phone off and the start button wouldn't work still, but I held it a long time with the down volume button (not sure this is necessary, just what I did) and all of a sudden instead of the dead battery logo, I got a charging battery logo and it was 87% charged. First time I had seen this in while. I pressed and held the power button and the Samsung Logo came up and the phone booted. (Slow boot compared to the new Infuse I now have.) So now my old phone was working, but not up to 100%.
I charged the battery to 100% and turned it off and left it off for the day/night. Yesterday I got it to turn on with all the buttons pressed and it booted, said connect battery charger/low battery 1%, h'mmm. I charged again to 100% and turned it off all day and night. Same issue this morning. Something is draining the battery when fully off. SO I still have a hardware issue I believe, just not sure what it is.
Thanks for any insight, I'll keep experimenting.

I have tried several other batteries now with the same results.
Yesterday, I decided it would be a good idea to use this phone as a practice platform for a Jelly Bean upgrade.with scott.hart.bti's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129
Everything went as advertised and I was pretty happy for a while. I was following the instructions quite literally and after flashing the CM9, I removed the external SD card and that messed up getting back into recovery, but I got there. From reading, I understand that I need the IC flash to preserve the EFS file, but not absolutely sure that I can't remove the SD card before starting the process altogether. CM9, then CM10.
Since all my programs needed to be re-downloaded and installed, I had the "Bright idea" to restore the backup in CWM that I did just before the upgrade. Bad idea, now I had a phone that would not boot.
Is there a way to upgrade to JB and not have to re-install all my programs? I will try the Nandroid backup in CWM
To get back working again, I could get into download mode, but not recovery, so I did J scotts back to stock, then the option C to get CWM and used quick boot to get into recovery and reflashed with an experiment of using your Quick wipe in stead of factory reset on this go. Again when I took the SD out at the finish of the CM9 I had a little trouble getting into the recovery to continue. When it did get to recovery, I finished flashing per the instructions, but when it booted I only had a partial group of programs, Google play was the most notable omission. I took a deep breath and did a factory reset, and managed to get into recovery and started with a flash of CM10 again and this time all ok.
I did a couple of boots with quick boot and powered down for the night with it plugged into the charger. This morning I can not get anything up. Battery charging icon shows and goes away (CM10 battery logo) I can get into download, but not recovery and don't really want to Odin back to stock and go from there, but may do that and leave it in GB while I update the new phone.
My conclusion is that it's hardware and possibly USB connector. IN GB the USB cable wouldn't connect so I used Software data cable. In JB it worked. Still confusing, but I'll keep at it.
Thanks for your patience and my learning curve!

Question HELP PHONE STUCK ON BOOTLOOP AT GOOGLE WRITING AND CANT GET DATA OUT

Hi all,
Im in a desperate and urgent need of help.
My Mrs pixel 7 pro is stuck in a boot loop that restarts 5 seconds after the google writing appears when starting. I wasn't home when it happened but she doesnt really make sure her phone has some battery before turning it on, as soon as she sees 2% she starts it, so im guessing maybe she bricked it while the phone was trying to apply an update when turning it on as she said that the external battery didnt have any juice left inside.
Anyway,
I know i can wipe the phone from recovery mode and make it into a factory reset phone. The issue here is we have over 6000 photos and videos of our son in that phone that she hasnt copied to the external hard drive i gave her for months due to her not liking that her little laptop is slow.
I tried recovery mode Reboot, i tried going into safe mode (no luck as it will go straight into fastboot mode). She doesnt care about a lot of things and obviously she never unlocked the developer setting or bootloader so device state is also locked.
I am begging you, anything any info or advice on how i can get those pictures out of the phone. Is there any way i can flash the stock firmware just to make the phone start and copy them after?
Any possibility or chance or retrieval?
I am willing to pay anyone that can guide me in the right direction as there are over 6 months worth of photos and memories.
Thanks in advance and may the luck be on my side.

If you can enter recovery mode try to sideload the same exact ota package of the rom she's running, maybe that can help. Good luck!

Here's Googles official OTA updates and instructions etc.
From what i've read briefly and as far as i can gather (still running a stock pixel 7 pro - for the first phone in god knows how long, so i'm not well read on this device but...) if you can sideload the latest OTA update via sideload then you should in theory be able to save the data and boot again. But if you flash full firmware then your device will be wiped in the process (if that's even possible with a locked bootloader).
Very best of luck
EDIT: hmm thinking about it, you won't have enabled USB debugging in dev options, hang on, i'll reboot direct to recovery to see if i can get the device recognised without USB debugging enabled. Sorry to be vague (hopefully someone more experienced with this device will chime in with more advice), like i say, i'm not rooted, flashed with custom rom - nothing, just plain old stock so i've not read up much on proceedures for this device. Bare with me!!
Had another thought, do you or have you been using Google photos to view your images on the device. If so, did you enable backup photos online when you first set the app up? If so, they could be backed up automatically...
Edit: my bad..
Try this link
If that fails just Google 'Google photos sign in'
Just tried from recovery to run some adb cmd's, no joy without enabling debugging 1st
There may be hope... If your photos aren't backed online already from above link...
EDIT:
1. From power off state (make sure the device is charged before apply any ota update) Press vol down and power together. As soon as it boots to google logo, let go of vol down, then power. That will put you in fastboot mode where you use the vol up/down to navigate to Recovery mode and power button to select.
2. Then when you have the screen that says 'no command', press power button and CLICK vol up (releasing vol up straight away but keeping power pressed). That'll take you a blue menu at top of screen.
3. Use vol buttons to navigate to 'apply update from adb'. I have checked using 'adb devices' and 'adb reboot sideload' cmd's on PC and the device is now recognised...
Will write further instructions shortly. (no guarantees this will work tho without losing data...or even if it'll work at all - i suspect the OTA update with just fail to transfer)
OR there is another option, using the same instructions above (1) in fastboot mode use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, power button to select Rescue mode. Then contact your service center for support who will advise/offer support - hopefully, which may end up having to send the device in and still offers no guarantee of preserved data

Following the link it's all explained there:
- no USB-Debugging needed
- booting recovery by key combo
- no loss of any data when using the OTA files
Also turning on USB-Debugging in developer options is not necessary for the recovery. It's enabled by default and moreover the recovery doesn't consider any system settings like disabled/enabled USB-Debugging.

yes, maybe...
FYI: Stock recovery only uses a minimal adbd with a very limited set of commands. That's why some known ADB commands won't work.
