[Q] Network connectivity - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

My wife's and my phone on the same evening, stopped connecting to the tmobile network. We have tried the cycling on and off, APN resets. Yes both IMEI's match and are not blocked. The phones will connect for a moment then they just stop, this is both on the wifi and tmobile networks. However we can still use the phones over wifi and surf the Internet. Yes, I have reset our home router also. Tmobile shows no outages in our area.
Also tried to manually register on the tmobile network, works for a couple of mins then, no more network.
What can I do?
Phone stats:
These are both t-959v's
They will be two years old in Sept.
Gingerbread 2.3.6
New batteries 1 month ago.
One phone is rooted the other is not, problem started the same night with both phones.

Could be an issue with the SIM cards and the work T-Mo is doing to reconcile the merged networks causing weird tower issues. If you go into a store, you should be able to get replacement SIM cards for free.

Seems to be limited to our home and home network. Away from our house my phone, the rooted one,is working fine. Could it be a local cell tower causing all odd or home problems. We had been having no issues with these phones up until a week ago.

Come home and sit in the backyard, wifi has not been turned on since I left. Full bars and text messages will not send again, try to make a call and it will not ring or hang up. Still says it is on the Tmobile network, but nothing works. Is my house cursed, signal jammer?
Also tried it on a friends wifi network and everything was normal.

Sounds like a bad local tower. The two basic choices are:
1) Wait and hope it gets fixed.
2) Get a new SIM card and hope that fixes it.
Also, in a different category, could try forcing the phone to 2G (generally in the mobile data options) and see if that fixes it or lets you avoid the problem while at home. Every now and then, my 4G gets confused or decides it hates a specific tower, but 2G tends to stay way more solid...

Ok, thank you for the tips. I have dumbed down the network, currently testing to see what happens.

Well switched to GSM only and its like magic, the phones have been working fine.
Thanks for the awesome tips!
Now, how do I explain to Tmobile they have a bad cell tower?

I've just called customer service and told them I, as well as several other customers in the office were having trouble in that location, bit nowhere else...and it used to work. A couple days later, it was fixed.

Thanks will try that, seems simple enough.

Losing Network???

Not sure what's going on. Just got this phone today, all is well. Installed all my apps. Nothing wrong yet. Then suddenly I lose data connection, but phone calls work fine??? Strange enough, airplane mode is off, data network is active/on and the bars are full strength (my area is perfectly fine with connection/reception).
In order for me to get the data to work again, I have to reboot the phone.
I already upgraded to EE4 as well.
Any one else having this problem?
This happened to me twice so far today. I did not root my phone, using stock rom.
I was having some data network issues too. Been all day.

It happened again...this is frustrating
What region do you live in? I'm in Alabama.

Take it back and get a replacement. I didn't make it out of the parking lot on my first one and noticed the data network was acting weird. Walked back in and showed them and they gave me a new one. Second one has been great. And with it being brand new I would not put up wiht that type of crap.
The phone I replaced had a connection that would cycle from 4g to 3g to 1x to dead if I downloaded more than 20mb of data at once. I also had it completely die and it required a battery pull after taking a picture once. When I returned it to the VZW store they couldn't reproduce the issue and factory reset it. I wasn't gone from the store for 5 min and it died again so I returned and they swapped it. I haven't had that issue since.
Dropping Network
My wife's phone looses the network MANY times per day and she has to reboot to get the connection back. Her battery also gets very hot and then the phone locks up. She is taking it back to Costco tomorrow to try another one.
both my thunderbolt and charge lose their connections ... i just got a replacement charge as they said it was defective since it was losing the network connection ... new one had to be rebooted to get a connection back, lol ... so much for the defective 'original' charge!
I went to VZ store today and they told me there is a 3G/4G outtage. Anyone else? I'm in PA.
Problem still persists even now.
4G in MO**
You guys still having issues?
Wife exchanged for another Charge and no more issues. She must of had a dud.

Mine is doing the same thing. Located in Southern Indiana
They must be doing some upgrades to the network because it's intermittent. The past couple of days I've been getting periods of no response even though the 4G icon is displayed.
During one of my connection issues, I just wanted to confirm it was actually connected and, oddly, I recoded one of my fastest speed tests during that time. I still wasn't getting updates/notifications from the Gapps though.
4g issues
I have issues of 4g display showing and cant connect but it last about a minute. But the worst part is at 1 am when im into my phone it just goes out cant connect to 3g or 4g with my life depended on it. Its so frustrating. any guesses?
I had my phone replaced....still having problems
I'm in Georgia and I've been having this issue as well. Just received my new change and I'm going to give it a shot...
Anyone come to a resolution yet?

I'm in NC and my 3G or 4G icon has started to randomly disappear. Sometimes it comes back sometimes not. ROM related perhaps??

[Q] Wifi Question

Hello XDA,
Right now I have an Atrix 4G, and while I know I should be happy with it, I truly am not. The battery life is horrendous, the GPS always puts me in a city I'm not in, and many other things (and this is my 4th unit).
But...the one thing that really has me ready to jump ship is that my wifi almost NEVER works. It connects, then disconnects, then connects, and back and fourth, it is very annoying. Is this a problem with the Infuse 4G?
Nope. At least in my case I have perfect wifi signal most of the time.

Yup, once in a while it has flaked out, but all I have to do when that happens is turn wifi off then on again.
Wifi in infuse has pretty poor range but still i get around 2 bars 40ft away though 3 walls and never seen the connection drop. I even sit in my car 50ft away from the modem and get 1 bar.
I have to agree on the poor WiFi quality on the Atrix. Another big issue for me was heat. The Atrix gets extremely hot.
I ended up taking the Atrix back and getting the Infuse. I'm pretty happy with the Infuse, it's a great phone!
Sent from my SAMSUNG Infuse via XDA Premium App
I have had both atrix and infuse. The wifi range is exactly the same. No connection issues however on the infuse.

I actually did have wifi issues on my infuse. Id be sitting at my pc desk with full wifi bars and it would not connect, either I had to reboot or id have to wait it out before it would connect. Also, id be at my friends house using is wifi without any issues, than when id come home id still be connected to his nexwork, id select my network but the phon would tell me its out of range, reboot. I called att and the rep dug thru notes and call logs and apparently others were having the same issue. Before he connected me to a samsung rep the att guy recommended me going into my routers settings and adding my phones mac id to my router. Once I finally spoke to the samsung guy he told me I need a new router, even tho all other wireless devices work fine in the house. So I did the Mac id bit and the phone was fine. The next day my phone received an update, not sure what it was (wifi fix perhaps) I updated but once I got home non of my other devices would connect. I went backs into router settings and changed it back to how it was and I haven't had an issue since.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Same problem here too!
I have had the same issues as nash2000. I can sit right next to my router, seems to have a full connection, yet not be in range. Any MMS's coming in would get stuck and stay in that "stuck" mode for days. I have replaced SIMM cards and called AT&T continually. They replaced my phone and nothing has changed.
I notice that no matter where I am - home, another state, etc - that when I with someone who also has AT&&T with an iphone that they always have more bars than I go and better wifi strength - even when we're both sitting next to my router. AT&T claims that my complaint of this is the very first they have heard - HA!
I think a lot of the wifi issues got cleared up with the update ATT pushed. @lasmonster do you have a mirocell?
What update did AT&T push for the Infuse? The Wi-Fi is horrible. Once it's connected it works fine but it usually doesn't scan well. I have to turn off Wi-Fi and turn it back on. Adding about 20 seconds to the time it takes to connect and sometimes it will say Not In Range when I'm obviously in range.

Not sure how to trick your phone into downloading it, mine just got it. I believe all the ROMs available also are built off the update (infused at least for sure)

Have to turn off mobile data 2-3 times a day

I have had internet connectivity issues that get cleared up immediatley after i disable mobile data and then re-enable.
It happens when i am in a solid 4g area sitting in the same place surfing the web and my data will just die. and it comes back right up after i disable and re-enable my mobile data.
it also happens when im on the bus going back and forth between 3g and 4g.
is this a normal droid charge issue?
seems like it craps out after about 10 min of surfing every time i remember it happening.
i had this happen when i was stock, after i rooted stock, and now on tweek 2.0
Had that issue yesterday on 4G, and it cleared up the same evening. Occasionally will lose data connectivity on 4G, even with it's still showing the connection. It's not very frequent or consistent, and it seems to have gotten better over time. There is definitely some flakiness on the radios on the Charge. A friend was sitting right next to me on his Spectrum yesterday and wasn't having any issues. I think it's likely related to Verizon network, but I think some phones are more sensitive to it than others.
Yeah, happens to me too. I had to disable/re-enable data at least twice today. :/

hmm.. i did have a few sim issues when i got the phone a week ago, after loading a rom the phone said there was no sim inserted or there was a sim error cant remember which.
maybe swap the sim tomorrow to see if that helps.
sounds like it might be a charge radio issue... i am getting what ever killer phone comes out in a few months anyway. Galaxy s3? HTC one X ? Galaxy Journal ?
Motorola hd ?
re
So i got a new sim..
Nothing has changed.
I have netflix and live in a great 4g area and still have to toggle off data 2-3 times a morning on my bus trip into seattle.
It seems like the radio has a hard time figuring out wtf to do once it comes in and out of 4g. I can be sitting at in traffic for 5 min with no signal and flipping the data on and then off... BAM 4g is back.
This makes for annoying netflix / IT Crowd, viewing.
I am glad that i got this phone as a temp solution cheap from craigslist. Motorola Droid fighter or Galaxy S3 will be putting this lump of mediocre electronics to rest in the next month or so.
What radio is installed on your phone? To find this out go to settings/about phone. The baseband version would be your radio. If it says i510.06V.FP1, that means you are on the most up to date radio. I had similar issues before I updated to FP1 but since then, the 3 or 4G has been very quick to connect and stays reliable all day.
One of my buds works for Vzw and he told me that the 4g network is great when it works. In some places vzw is activating 4g network before the network is ready to be deployed. They are doing this because competition has more 4g coverage.
One solution is to set your phone to 3g only and accept reliable slow sppeds or deal with crappy 4g. Eventually vzw will get it right. Wjen though, is anybody's guess.

data issues

My gf's tb has been getting terrible data service since accepting the ota a few weeks ago. Her phone is rooted but runs a stock rom. Anyone else having this issue?
If you are s off and the radio from the previous version was better you could flash the radios from it and see if that helps.

I've been having problems for the last week or so. I'm dropping my connection a lot and even when I'm showing a steady 4G signal, things are moving a lot slower than I'm used to. I've seen people with other Verizon phones complaining too so I'm not sure it has anything to do with the recent update.
I was having issues like that the other day. I had to put my phone in airplane mode and take it back out just to get my phone to load webpages. The next day everything was fine again.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Same problem. I'll be fine for a while then I'll lose data connection completely, get it back, drop a few seconds later and this keeps going on for a while. For me, Google Maps has been something that drops my data connection after I launch. I eventually have to put airplane mode on/off for the connection to stabilize.
I've noticed these issues more frequently lately with various users in this forum. I myself have noticed data issues as well. Could it be a Verizon issue? If so many of us are having similar issues. I'm running eternity r248, great Rom but occasionally have these data drops. I'm in a good 4G coverage area.

I'm running Thundershed 1.6 and the most recent leaked radios. As far as I can tell there is an issue on Verizons end. For the past 4 days I've had a strong connection to a 4G tower but data doesn't work at all until i switch to 3G.
While troubleshooting this I flashed a new ROM, radios, kernels, hard/soft resets, battery pulls, reseat SIM card, everything. Nothing seemed to work so I'm convinced we just have to wait for Verizon to fix things.
-Nex
Since about a week ago my LTE data has been frequently dropping in and out in previously known good areas and it will not transition to 3G. Fed up I decided to go into ##778# and change eHRPD to EVDO. Has been stable so far but more time will tell.
Update: It's still dropping in and out. Trying OpenMobile leak radio since I had good experience with it in the past.
There's ongoing data issues on Verizon's end, particularly on and near the east coast. Apparently, they're trying some different authentication settings that are resulting in mobile data automatically unchecking itself in settings, data drops, weak signal, and inconsistent signal. Hopefully Verizon will get it together soon.

I reported my issues to tech support the other day and finally managed to get it bumped up to the next level today.
The tech knew nothing about any network problems and when he did a search for customers filing similar complaints in my area (Metro-Detroit), he found nothing unusual that would lead him to believe that there was a widespread issue.
He is convinced that there's either a problem with my sim card or the phones radio. He mentioned that they have been having a lot of problems with sim cards failing and said that in his experiences, they have a life expectancy of around 6 months before they start acting up.
He is sending me a new sim card and replacement phone via Fed Ex so that I can test out both of his theories.
I called yesterday to talk about my data issues and the tech is sending me another bolt and Sim card with no questions asked

I'd like to think that it's as simple as replacing the SIM card but I have a feeling it's a network thing.

most likely is. Been fighting with data issues for three weeks. 4g is completely useless lately because of the connection problems. And since they dropped a bunch of 3g towers around here, 3g signal just sucks. Lucky to be able to open a web page a couple times a day downtown in my city.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Sadly, I was right. Swapped out SIM cards today and within minutes, was having the same problems.
What's most annoying is that this appears to only be an isolated problem in certain areas and with certain users. If it was widespread, Verizon would certainly know about it and be on top of things. I'm not even sure that anybody at any level knows that some of us are having these problems with data drops.
Disregard. It appears to be network issue all along.
I have the same horrible data dropping issue all the time. I live in Minnesota, if that helps. I bought this phone used on ebay and I don't think Verizon will send me a replacement, right?

I recently had data drops with the latest radio. When I switched to the 605.9 radios that stopped. That may not work for everyone though.

Connection dropping

I keep seeing my 3g connection dropping completely. I'll be browsing the web and im not moving at all and all of a sudden the connection is gone. I first thought it had something to do with the connection optimizer but it doesn't seem like that. Did anyone else experience this or know a solution to that?

This happens in an area with partial Spark.
Mine does same thing because I have 3 towers all equal distance from me. 1 is Spark other 2 are not.
If you travel to another location you probably won't see the issue but in short from talking to some eng. the phone is doing 1 of two things.
A) It see's an LTE signal and as LTE is primary it starts to try to connect to it but before it fully does (thus why you never see LTE icon) it realizes it doesn't support the switched fall back required to allow Spark phones to get calls while on LTE so it kicks you back to 3g. This process continues to repeat :/
B) The phone see's an weak LTE signal, as is primary starts to connect but before it fully does the signal is determined to be to weak and falls back to 3g.
In both cases the phone possibly would never show you the LTE icon as that will only show once fully established and it doing this jumping back and forth causes 3g to go and die where forcing CDMA fixes.
The other downfall to this is it KILLS the battery.
Connecting to WiFi won't help with the battery part either as it still does the jumping around.
Your only option is really force CDMA mode only when in an area like this, for me, this is at home only, or live with it and lower battery life until they upgrade the towers all the way.

Hate to share the news but that won't solve your problem, it actually could make it worse as it's now another signal to bounce between.
4G IS always priority when enabled, so regardless of you having a "tower" inside your home now, that does not provide 4G, so if the phone's seeing one that does which is what's causing the problem your issue will remain the same meaning you're forced to put the phone in CDMA only mode still.
The problem isn't with the 3G tower or 3G signal, the problem is the 4G signal being detected but not yet compatible with SPARK due to missing the circuit fall back feature, which the phone doesn't know until it attempts to connect. In some areas where it's partially setup the phone can connect to 4G and just calls won't work, in other areas it's disabled or doesn't exist and this problem happens.
Your solution will simply need to be put the phone in CDMA only mode when in a troubled area only, or just leave it in that mode and have no 4g until everything is upgraded better, or deal with as is.
