Android to Android music streaming - Android Apps and Games

Y'all, for the past 2-3 years I've been begging around all corners of the Internet for an Android music streaming solution (meaning Android-based Internet streaming server + Android streaming client), to no avail. That is until the other day, when someone suggested I use FTP streaming, Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am now looking for a good Android music player with network (FTP) capabilities. I've tried ES File Explorer (good file manager, though pretty clunky when it comes to music playback capabilities, nor can playback be controlled via Bluetooth (can it?)), and Dice Player (no playlist features whatsoever).
Any other suggestions please? Bluetooth playback control is a must. Many thanks!

Try Twonky!
It is capable of being a host, speaker, server, and it can discover all network servers, speakers and hosts.
The UI is not the best, but the functionality is really great!
Edit: Read your post again, I'm not sure if this is what you want.

Thanks. As far as I can tell, Twonky doesn't stream from FTP (though I'd gladly stand corrected).

WiFi Streaming
way to use WiFi Streaming?

I don't know if this will work for you but instead of ftp how about xbmc? It can use multiple network protocols including upnp. Install xbmc on the desktop to act as a server and on the Android device to act as a client.

Thanks for the suggestion, what I need is an Android-based server that streams music onto the Internet. An FTP server should do just fine, but I need a client that supports FTP streaming.

Have you looked at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829334 might be something in there that you can use

Yes, thank you, that is the FTP server that I am currently using. It's the FTP client that I am after at this point: I need an FTP client that is somewhat more music playback-friendly than ES File Explorer. Does anyone know if any of the following clients fit this bill?
Plex
XBMC
Twonky
Subsonic
Skifta
aVia
iMediaShare

HTC Streaming Media Player PPC with WLAN/ASync

hi,
I'm working on some streaming media app for mobile phones/ppc, and use my Polaris for testing the 3gp rtsp streaming. When connected over the air (hsdpa/umts) the rtsp streaming works fine with the inbuilt htc streamin media app. However when I connect the polaris to the internet either via WLAN or activesync (through the host pc) the streaming doesn't work at all. the streaming media app opens as soon as I click the rtsp link just fine, but then just says can't connect.
Any ideas on how to get it to work via wlan/async? otherwise all this testing might be getting expensive
the htc streaming media app (v 2.20 build 1026.711) is from the stock polaris rom.
alternatively another rtsp 3gp/mp4 player app that works with all connections would be just as fine, but some quick googling around didn't turn up any obvious contenders -- the htc app seems to be pretty good at what it does; except for the connection problems that is...
hmm.. I guess nobody else is either using steaming media on their polaris, or I'm the only one having problems with it... I just don't understand why it won't work over WLAN instead of only OTA...
Exact same problem here. Working well over 3G with any streaming app, however it's never working over WLAN.

I just thought the inbuilt Streaming Media app, was completely useless...
I didn't know it woulld work over cellular and not over wifi.....
You're the first person I've come across who's managed to get it to work at all......!
I use realplayer and the built in windows media player for my streaming..... but as I say, I've only ever tried it over wifi....
I may investigate over HSPDA, 3G, etc.....
How is the windows mobile realplayer? does it install other stuff that integrate everywhere into the system like the PC version (which I will never install again) or is it a well behaved ppc app? And does it work for streaming over wlan?

Sorry I mean, I use Real Player for pocket pc AND Windows Media player for streaming .wma/asx files.
It's well behaved from what I can work out.. It's like back to the days of realplayer 8, when it was a well behaved little application....
As for streaming... I've only ever streamed over wlan.... Including a couple of bbc tv programs....
There is a site for the BBC streams, as they're all rstp files, Real Player won't open the links.. (Don't ask why, I have no idea) but in theory.. the HTC Streaming Media thingy should do, as that's the type of file PREfix, it's looking for...

[Q] [REQ] Media Player with access to LAN

Hi Folks,
is there any media player that can access to files that are in my LAN e.c. on my server?
If i use Astro FE, or ES File Explorer I have access to my server, but i cannot chose which media player to take...
so what I need is a player that has access to LAN or a file explorer with which i can choose how to open a file...
(Main problem: there is no media player that plays ALL file formats + lan access)
Thank you,
Michael
So far I don't believe there's any that can do that, mainly due to fact that its not that easy to develop something like this. I believe it can be done, but because the app would probably need to be either some sort of client-server architecture or streaming the video, otherwise, if you would say like double click on a media file in astro on the LAN side, it would be downloading the video to your phone, then playing it locally rather than directly playing it from the LAN server/machine. Do correct me if i'm wrong though.
have also been waiting (im)patiently for this. can't believe it hasn't been done already!
Right.
That was no problem on my winmo 6.5 device, a lot of apps were able to do that.
An alternative would be a "Lan App" that simulats a "Lan" folder at the sd-card on which media programs have access.
The downloading thing junst happens with videos, that astro or ES File Manager cannot play. I can play a single MP3 for exaple but the screen than is black. So it seems as if thereĀ“s no comfortable app.
sad.
So can you recommend me some media app that maks the android device to a good looking media player for local files? (also that "easy" exercise is not as easy...)
thanks so far!
I use subsonic. It uses its own server software, which is a bit of a bummer, but it works great anywhere be it over wifi or 3g.
http://www.subsonic.org/pages/index.jsp
PS. There are clients for many platforms, including adobe air and a built in http server as well.
The subsonic client is available on the market I believe.
Vlc steamer can do both audio and video streaming great little app, but only works if the server can run vlan server

Where you able to find any app with la access?
There's an app in Google Play called 'Samba filesharing'. Browse for a media file on your pc, (through LAN of course) and open it. Works like a charm....

I am able to stream videos from a lan computer through ES File Explorer in HTC Desire Hd using the default streaming video player app. Takes a few seconds to buffer and works a charm. Not sure if this is just a HTC feature.
Thanks for the answers I also found one called bsplayer its great!!!!

video/audio streaming from media server

I've been toying with the idea of using my laptop as a DLNA / uPNP media server. I have most of my video/audio assets stored on an external USB memory drive (it's actually a MP3 player with custom RockBox firmware...but I digress), so I could also use my little NSLU2 Linux server, providing I install all the required software on it.
At the top of anyone's list there should be at least: AllShare, AndroMote, Twonky (and iMediaShare for those wanting to share media *from* the tablet device). I tried them all, with varying degrees of success due to the type of media server I was running on my Mac OS X laptop. Plex doesn't seem to provide this feature so I ended-up using TVMOBiLi instead, which provides a not-so-user-friendly web-based interface. There are other advanced servers, such as miniDLNA, uShare, FireFly or MediaTomb, but this was getting far too time-consuming so I stopped there.
In fact, I ended-up using VLC Player with its built-in "web interface" feature (essentially a streaming server that can be controlled remotely), and VLC Stream & Connect on the Android tablet. It works great, and the live transcoding of the video was pretty satisfying (only minor glitches due to re-synchronizing the A/V streams from time to time...probably some settings I can tweak in VLC-S&C). The nice thing about DLNA / uPNP is that it is a discoverable service, that clients normally automatically detect on a LAN. VLC offers the same level of "it just works", and allows me to browse my media files directly from the tablet. Nifty.
A more advanced method is to share a folder on the media server via Samba / SMB / CIFS (works on Windows, Linux and Mac), to mount the shared directory on the Android tablet via a custom-built CIFS kernel module. Then any basic file explorer will "see" the remote files as local files, which results in video/audio players being "tricked" into thinking they are working with local files, when opening media assets from the file explorer. Conversely, using Astro (with SMB support) or ES File Explorer we can access network files via the smb: protocol, but video/audio players are unlikely to support opening media via this kind of URL (most players only support local files). Also note that the transfer speed may be problematic depending on the required media bitrate...anyone to test full HD video streaming ?

Hi.
I use VLC Stream & Convert and it works nicely except audio-video delay.
For me is more important to understand how to stream my video in internet to watch them when I'm outside of my home network.
Previously I use HTTP protocol in Maemo OS , but in Android OS and RTSP things are different.
daniel.weck, do you have experience with this?

VLC Stream & Convert supports both HTTP and RTSP I think, there are many options in both the server (VLC Player) and the client (VLC S&C). Streaming content from a source within your LAN to an external destination on the internet requires a particular setup:
* fixed IP WAN address at your home broadband connection (or a dynamic one that is identifiable).
* router with NAT and firewall configured so that some ports are open to the local LAN IP address that serves content. See the VideoLan documentation for UDP/TCP protocol ports.
Vlc-based solutions are not really solutions. I for one have the vast majority of my media on a ion-based htpc which just doesn't do well converting on the fly. What we really need is a good dlna client for the tab, like allshare but better.
Have you tried Andromote and Twonky?

[Q] DLNA server client for HC 3.1

I have gotten TVersity to work as a server to my transformer running My Net as the client.
I was wondering if there might be a better combination to play my video files on
the transformer?
First try with the keyboard/dock, the delay is driving me nuts.
Luck;
Ken
I use Plex on mine which seems to work well.Coming from an iPad and Air Video this program works well and it says it'll work out of your local network as well on the net, though I haven't tried it yet.
I use PlayOn at home and it will send video to my iPad, TF, PS3, and most other devices. It works great for Netflix for me since we don't have the Netflix app working on the TF.
Edit: I know it is a pay for app, but I've been extremely happy with it.
I find upnplay to be great. Basically it just streams the file into another video application of your choice so it supports whatever your player does. I like moboplayer personally, but to each their own.
Serviio works for me...
Confused
Okay, I'm sorry for the newbie question
But everywhere I go to look for Eee Pad and DLNA related topics, i keep reading about people who stream videos from their PC to the Eee Pad.
but that's not what I want.
What i want is, HOW do I steam a video FROM the Eee Pad to the Television, wirelessly, using DLNA.
what app does that?
I haven't bought a DLNA enabled television yet, but i'm thinking about getting this DLNA streaming client for the TV

because before i buy it, i need to figure out, how can i DLNA stream a video from the tablet to that DLNA client.
if anyone could please tell me which app definitely works for that on the Transformer, i'd be most appreciative, please, and thank you !

Hi Ken,
Maybe my experience will be of any use to you. So here it goes.
I am (also) mainly interested in using the stock player (MyNet) for videos. For various reasons, primarily because of hardware acceleration. Unfortunately Android audio/video codec support is "pathetic" as well as container support. Probably those are choices due to licensing restrictions. If one does not have files in the natively supported format(s) the only option for on-the-fly transcoding is MPEG4/AAC in Transport Stream. WEBM could be a viable option but MyNet has no support for WEBM, sigh. Unfortunately Android explicitly states that transport streams are NON SEEKABLE (even locally).
I have tried: PMS Server, Mezzmo, Isedora, JR Media Center, Plex Media server, TV Mobili, Serviio, Twonky, Wild Media Server. Apart from the fact that some are not free only a few have support for transcoding into H264/AAC. Some are more configurable than others. Some have features that I am not very interested in, like automatic download from the INet of the covers, metadata etc. The ones that I played with the most are:
PMS Server: can't transcode to H264, free, very configurable, stable
Mezzmo: can transcode to H264/AAC, not free, very configurable, has some stability issues
Serviio: can't transcode to H264, free
Wild Media Server: very configurable, can transcode to H264/AAC, stable, very strict licensing (per MAC address of devices)
All of the DLNA servers that I have tried (even the non free ones) use third party FFMPEG or MENCODER for transcoding. And all exhibit a bug when transcoding the audio into AAC - half of the times the audio is transcoded with a very low bitrate (~6kb), despite correct transcoding settings, that MyNet doesn't want to play.
As you can see "native" client support for Android/TF101 is very limited. I have experimented also with transcoding to MPEG2/AC3 or MP3 in Program Stream container (or TS) and using other players (like UPnP + vPlayer). The results seem better but not without issues (sometimes not fluid, sudden closures of the player etc).
Hope it is of any help to you.
Cheers.
ArkMC is working well for me, basically as good as upnp player, lets you choose a 3rd party player to play your media.... but the gui is MUCH nicer than upnp player.

Hello,
I'm using the free application iMediaShare from Bianor available for free in the market.
this application makes me able to stream all the media from my tablet (Asus TF101) but also from my HTC Desire, on my SAMSUNG DLNA compatible TV, with no cables.
It was also possible to stream others media (like youtube directly from the android devise).
hope it was helpful.
PS : My tv is connected directly to my router with Ethernet and my devices connected to the router via WIFI.
can give skifta a try, it's free from the market.

Thanx for the tip, first time that I hear of Arkuda.
Tried the free version of ArkMC last night and indeed the UI is pleasant. Has a few quirks but it seems to be an early release so eventually they should be ironed out.
+1 for ArkMC

[Q] Wifi Music Streaming

I'm looking for an app that will let me stream music that I have saved on my computer to my TF over my home network. I have my network all set up for sharing and everything. I've been using File Expert and more recently Antek to stream videos over SMB, which is all well and good, but it kind of sucks for music when I can only stream one file at a time. I'd like something that I can designate a network location as a music library and then have access to all of my music and so on and so forth. Does such a thing exist? Even if I have to use a program on the PC in conjunction with the app, that would be super.
I cannot use Google Music here in Canada (unless that has changed recently) or else I probably would.

What you need is dlna server and client. transformer already comes with program that supports it. It's called "mynet". On pc you can use windows media player to share you music.
Ps3 media server is the best PC side app ive used for this sort of thing, never tried it with the tf101 but works great with a ps3 or wd tv live.

Maybe Audiogalaxy is what you are looking for? It is what I use to stream music from my PC to my Transformer. It's very easy to use.
I use PlugPlayer. It picks up on any DLNA servers so no additional PC services needed. I also use subsonic for remote access away from home, but it does use a PC service.
