[Q] Mail App Disabled and cant enable - HTC One S

Hi, I updated my One S to jelly bean. Before (under Gingerbread) I had disabled my mail app so I could use each company's third party app (Outlook, Gmail, etc.). Now, I need to set up an exchange email (microsoft) but can't open the mail app. Is there a way I can re-enable it? Or is there another way I can get exchange email to my phone w/o using the mail app? Thanks!

Are you sure that that you got One S with Ginger Bread.
Do you tried to add mail account in Settings.
Without adding Gmail account how you access PlayStore.

One s was never delivered with gingerbread.
It came out of factory with ice cream sandwich.

Yeah sorry guys, totally mixed it up. i meant ICS. I meant that I cant get into the stock mail app. I can add accounts via settings and I downloaded the gmail app but i previously disabled the stock mail app (under ICS). When I upgraded to JB, it stayed disabled, but there is no enable button like in other apps.

You need to go under settings then applications and under all you can hit mail and will allow you to enable there if that is what mean.
You can't just add the account to get it back.

I realize that. But when I go into manage apps, there is no enable button..see attachment. Any thoughts?

That is weird.
Must have gotten corrupted during the update.
Being there is no option there at all you are probably going to have to master reset the phone.

Great, thanks! Could you briefly show me the steps to that?

No problem,
This should help

Gmail and Messaging Smart Extras not syncing

I've noticed that the Gmail app on the SW2 doesn't seem to update all the time. I've currently only got 5 messages in there, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it - previously it was only showing 1 email.
Similar story with Messaging.
So my questions are - is there a way to force an update/push to the watch?
At this time, Gmail Smart Extra won't handle multi mail accounts even it appears to.
If it's your case, just select a single account, you'll see it syncs just fine
Then, you'll have to do a "trick" (forwarding or fetch other accounts won't work properly) to get all your other account's mails into this selected account (lemme know if you'd like me to walk you through this).
Also, if you have some sort of energy saving feature enabled on your phone, Gmail might not sync/push notifications to your SW2 as often as you wish/think...

I've got just the one Gmail account.
It's also not working for the messaging extension, either.

Email app vs gmail app on lollipop

I updated my N5 to Lollipop by flashing factory image.
Now I can no longer add email accounts for use with the standard android email app, only the gmail app. I understand that gmail app wants to take over but at least I still had the option prior to the upgrade to choose either.
I preferred keeping those two separate for some of my accounts.
I tried disabling gmail in the hopes that this would restore the ability to add accounts to the email app but to no avail.
Any suggestions? Do I need to find a way to downgrade the email apk to get that functionality back.
Thanks
Manuel

Stock email app NOT gmail

Anyone know how to get the old stock email app working on pixel? I've installed an old apk but as soon as I try and open it, it says to use Gmail and points me that way. Makes me feel like I'm using an iPhone.

I just got my phone set up yesterday. Are you saying there was a different default e-mail app on this phone at some point? Mine only came with the Gmail app. Seems strange to me to not have Gmail be the stock email app on a Google phone.
Doesn't exist anymore

Wow. Thats too bad. Guess I'll have to wait for a custom rom to use it again. Its still in Cyanogenmod builds, maybe its in gapps. Anyhow, I really liked keeping it separate from gmail.
Yeah. You may be able to build it from source from CM but sounds like a pain.

Why not just download another email app. Like Outlook, that one works well with all email accounts.
I'd strongly recommend K9 as an email app. Been using that since my G1 and it's still outstanding!
K9 or blue mail works great, I've used k9 for a long time, just switched over to blue, very hard to decide which one is the keeper ?

These guys are not actually correct.
The "stock" email program STILL EXISTS, and in fact, is actually INSTALLED on Pixel devices from factory!
BUT, google has merged its UI into the GMAIL program.
So you have two options if you want to use the "stock" email program;
1) Set up your IMAP email account through the GMAIL program,
2) DISABLE the gmail program, and guess what happens? The "email" program launcher icon shows up in your launcher!
HOWEVER, it really is a much better idea to use k9mail instead. It is far more feature rich.

Neat, I didn't know that! Still gonna use K9 myself but that's pretty cool!
Aquamail would be my recommendation for a mail app. Easily the best and easiest to use of the six or eight that I tried...

That's a good find but unfortunately doesn't work for me. My mail server wont play nice with the Gmail app so I can't even get it configured. I still tried to disable Gmail but didn't see the stock email app. I then installed a stock email apk and it installed but still gives me the same screen saying that Gmail is the new everything app

Aquamail Pro is nice, arguably better than K9, although it was just acquired by MobiSystems so who knows how future updates are going to look. Large companies acquiring small, indie developer projects does not usually end well for the app.
Security-wise, Aquamail, K9 and Nine are about the only third-party apps I'd consider.
I know this thread is now almost 2 months old.
what I"m looking for is a mail app to keep my gmail separate from my 2 exchange emails - and it MUST integrate with a calendar widget.
I haven't found one that works best. I liked the old "Mail" app - I could left swipe to delete, right to options - all your reply, reply-all, forward options right at the top of each message, rather than the options dots.
Outlook won't get sucked into my Google Calendar.

Aquamail - I tried just about every top email app. Also needed it to support Calendar, works perfect. I use the paid version and can't imagine a more customizable Android email client. Absolutely outstanding. Extremely reliable too.
Use Nine for Exchange. I've been using it for years, best Android email client.

Yeah, definitely for Exchange. I still prefer K9 for IMAP (easy to have lots of aliases) but Nine is definitely where it's at for Exchange. Great integration to Calendar and more!
It seems that only the Lollipop branch of the stock email app 7.0-x is merged into Gmail. Earlier versions of the stock email app, targeted for KitKat like email app 6.3-x, are still working. I am on CM 11 and the fresh installed email app 6.3-1218562 seems functional and wants to be configured with an email account.
However, regarding security concerns it may be still better to use an alternative mail client like K9. I ask me now how that one performs on low-level phones with weak hardware. All these super-rich features of that nice K9 mailing app needs surely hardware power. I noticed a similar behavior also on more recent Gmail versions. These are far more hardware hungry then older ones. That's the reason why I like the stock email app, - it seems lightweight and fast.

Stock email app issue

So I use the stock email app. But for some reason it loses authentication of all my accounts constantly. When it does it asks me to retype in the password. But it won't actually let me do it. When I click in the text box it just disappears. The only thing i have been able to do is delete the accounts and re add them. Anyone have a fix?
delete app data and retry email setting

use outlook for android, its a fantastic email program. i also like nine email
I think the stock email is the best email out there (except apples mail app on iOS). So I don't want to is another. But I have this problem too, or something similar. It's just stops syncing and the only way to get it to restart is to reboot or go to account settings and force a resync by going past 'enter password'.

I find it smoother and faster to work with than any of the third party packages. Just my opinion.

Actually I had the same problem with Outlook, which uses OSS authentication, what I did, it was to revoke all permission on my accounts, then clean the cache on the app.
Another way it's to use IMAP settings.

Gmail Notifications

Hello, im loving my OP7 Pro so far - sadly i got one issue. I don't receive Notifs from Gmail... i enabled them all (the app does not appear in battery optimization so i cannot disable that). i got no issues with other apps. Im running out of idea.. i found a topic about the 6 and 5T but didnt deliver and sultion... anyone got the same problem?
i only see the mails if i actually open gmail.
I had the same issue with Gmail, I'm a Google apps user so have a service agreement with them, they managed to fix it at their end.
If your issue is the same as mine then you're Gmail notifications will not work on other phones too.
If they do work on other phones then you're issue is different to the one I had.
I hope this may help.

hello, thanks for your quick reply,
they worked fine on my huawei mate 20 x before.
so i guess the error is on a secret / hidden setting i cannot find
It's the deep sleep Android goes to. It's not showing in the battery optimization bc GMAIL is a system app.
Fix 1, Uninstall system GMAIL app with Titanium backup "root required" and install from the app store. It will show up in battery optimization then add to no optimize.
Fix 2, run "dumpsys deviceidle disable" w/o quotes in Terminal Emulator under SU "Root required" or add in into script and have execute at boot.
Fix 1 and 2 both worked for me before.
I installed magisk module, OxygenOS Gmail Battery Fix. It works for me so far.

It also doesn't work if I keep Gmail open and just turn the screen off.
So I basically need to root it to get notifications? Seems rather unintended no?
You'll need root to turn off Android doze or uninstall Gmail as a system app and reinstall as user app. That's the nature of the beast.
Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk
You can do it without root as well: Using Nova Launcher (or another launcher which can create activity shortcuts), long press on homescreen, click on widget and create an activity for: Settings -> Battery optimization (.Settings$HighPowerApplicationsActivity), open it, set to "all Apps" with the dropdown menu and it will show all Apps including system Apps. Then choose "not optimized" for Gmail

That's another issue then if it doesn't notify you if you send an email shortly after turning off the screen. Do you get notifications when the screen is on?
I found a great substitute for Gmail. Try Edison Email on the Play store. Notifications work great, and app is very customizable.

I have exactly the same issue...
Same here. With activty launcher from Nova i can change Gmail to ''dont optimize''. But it will reset after restart...
Go to Settings / Accounts / Google / Account sync
Disable and reenable sync for Gmail.
This fixes it for me every time. Issue typically comes back after some Gmail updates (not after all updates).

Trust me when I say this won't work, it took Google 2 weeks and lots of bug reports for them to find the issue assuming it's the same as mine.
Please confirm you still receive notifications on a different phone.
If not like I had, Google technical support had to fix something there end.
Having the same issue on my S10+ .. I receive some notifications on one Gmail account - but it's hit/miss on the rest.
