[Q] S3 Camera Breaks Upon Installing Custom ROM - General Questions and Answers

I have had Bean's Jelly 'Beans' ROM installed on my GS3 since I first got the phone in October. Verizon had to replace my phone this past week, and once I received the new one, I did the customary procedure of rooting it and installing a custom ROM. However, after I install a ROM, the Camera always breaks (I get the message "Camera Failed" and the camera screen is black when I open the stock camera app).
I have already researched the issue, and it seems there is a history of some S3's coming out of the box with a broken camera, but it is important to note that the camera works fine as long as I revert back to the stock (and rooted) rom. When installing the Jelly 'Beans' ROM, I have selected 4 different kernel options(Beans custom stock, imoseyon lean kernel, ktoonsez, and faux kernel), thinking that may be the issue, but each one still leaves a broken camera. I have also tried installing an aftermarket camera app, in case the S3 camera apk is somehow broken, and have flashed the Photosphere Camera. Nothing will get the camera to work (and yes, my battery is fully charged).
Not being able to install a custom ROM is a pretty big deal to me, and not having a working camera is a deal breaker. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get Verizon to replace the phone again since it all works on the stock ROM. Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried several things I have read in the forums, but nothing has worked so far. Thank you all in advance for your help!

I'm going to go ahead and help myself out and respond to my own question. Upon even further research (yes, I know everyone says people don't look hard enough), I believe the issue relates to the Firmware version. Supposedly the newest firmware breaks the camera unless it's on the stock rom. There are modified firmwares out there that change the part that breaks the camera, but I believe I am going to downgrade the modem and all from what was pre-installed and see if it works.

if its a custom Rom (Stock but maby some extras such as overclocking or somethin) they are Sometimes Broken They will try to fix it sometimes, upgrading to a higher android version it is sometimes is Quite hard to Fix everything.

I downgraded the firmware to VRBMB1 and went back to that custom rom and the camera works flawlessly. I read in the firmware forum that the new firmware is doing this to a lot of people...I just happened to have one of the phones that came with it pre-installed. Problem solved and hopefully this post will help someone out...if not...it helped myself out at least.

Yeah I'm sure it will be fixed. Either way, I don't recommend that newest firmware...signal seems to be the worst out of all of the ones I've tried...for me at least. Seems to be a lot of complaints out there with it anyways.

Similiar issue?
I am having a similiar issue with my US Cell GS3. I bought the donor version of mskip's Samsung Galaxy S3 Unified Toolkit and rooted my device yesterday now my camera is doing the same thing...fires up to a black screen, hangs a few seconds then says camera failed. I'm running Android 4.1.2, build R530UVXAMD4. I've read in a few places that I may have to either downgrade my kernel or flash with some sort of alternate firmware.
Any assistance provided is greatly appreciated!

I have had the same problem when I installed a certain custom rom (can't remember the name ) on my s3. But later I found that during installation of the rom, there was an option to choose one of four kernels, and if I chose Boeffla kernel (included in the options) my camera wouldn't work. So I just reverted back to the stock kernel and walah! My camera works again.

Can not connect to the camera. Still no solution? CM10.0.

Hi, I can't seem to find my way around this issue. Every time I try to open any camera app, it doesn't allow me and says it's unable to connect. Is there no sure solution to this yet? I tried flashing new cameras through recovery. Nothing works at all. I have tried flashing fixes from several threads on a clean start, different camera apps, clearing caches, clean wiping, and other things I can't even remember at this point with all the frustration. What's up with this?
TW based ROMs work. AOSP seems to not. I lost the thread explaining how to dial the codes into a TW based ROM, but another problem with this for me is, I am extremely confused as to how to do some of the steps explained in that thread (hence why I closed it, looks like that should be the way out for me though?).

It's an AOSP problem based on the firmware of your camera when getting the phone from what I've seen.

Here's the thread I was talking about, however I'm confused about how to go about zipping and unzipping these files. Or even how to get to them to place the files in to begin with considering internal SD card is the only thing that comes up for USB storage. Unless you're supposed to move them in and out from within android.
Would really like a confirm on whether or not this works for the Verizon version, and whether or not it's a different process/if this even works at all, rather not break it fully
Why is this not more of a widespread issue? it seems so crucial that many are having but nobody seems to be talking about it or wanting to find a definite fix for it?

I had the camera problem on MIUI...
Before flashing, I made a backup of my system with CW
I extracted the SlimISP_ZH.bin from my backup and
copied it to my /data directory and it worked fine.
Link: d-h.st/dwx
(I can't post links yet)
maybe... someone post the fix in this forum and make it sticky... lol
Ughhhhhhhhh. This is getting irritating. Going to revive the thread.
I flashed the new firmware (MD3) for this phone. I had everything good and working with CM10... Guess what, borken camera, same issues...
I can't post links yet, but it's in the android development thread with this title:
★ [Rom][I535VRBMD3][4.1.2] Stock Root Odex/Deodex [05/29/13]★
Except... this time I cannot do the simple copy/paste of the bin files this time, why is that?
At this point I just want my VRBLK3 (I think?) firmware back.. Where can I get it to reverse what I just downloaded, in essence?
Also.. What the heck kind of hurdles am I going to have to go through when CM10.1 is complete?.. I don't think I'll be updating my phone past 10.1 at this rate if this continues, really irritating.

Yes, that is the post. I also tried MB1 out of curiosity, no dice on either of them. I had a perfectly working CM10. I dun goofed :\.
That was my next step (rerooting, installing that firmware AIO, and then installing CM10). However my question is this, what happens when more firmware comes out? I have to re root and start over again?
If you flashed md3 just flash back mb1 and you will fix that problem. I had the issue. Pulled the firmware from invisiblek for mb1 and back to normal on liquid smooth

Yeah I think a clean slate is definitely needed from time to time. I swap roms frequently but liquid gives me the best battery life right now from my tests so I keep going back. I Get scared telling people to odin because so mant people soft brick while screwing up a flash inodin or hard brick because they flash a non Verizon rom

good point. saw where someone flashed an i9300 s3 rom on the verizon s3 and brick city. my problem with aokp, cm, liquid, carbon, baked bean, I've tried them all, is constant freezing forcing me to pull the battery. I love the features of those roms but I hate having to pull the battery all the time
Hmm, over the past couple days I've tried out a few different ROMs on my girlfriend's S3 here, and on each one I would get this "Could not connect to the camera" error, every single time upon opening the camera app. One of the Paranoid Android ROMs, Liquid Smooth, and Synergy (even the Touchwiz camera was broken on that!).
I can restore to the original backup I made of the stock ROM, and the camera works fine again. But as soon as I try a different ROM, no camera.
I'd love to get an AOSP ROM running on this phone, but having a working camera is a requirement, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Searching the individual threads for the ROMs yields little help, and I'm getting exactly the same error on different ROMS, so I feel like I'm doing something wrong on a higher level. Any chance that switching from TWRP to CWM would make a difference? I don't see why it would, but I suppose it's something I could try.

Have you tried odin back to MB1 or even LK3 and letting it go through the OTA's? Those OTA's also update rpm, and other partitions, that as far as I know don't get updated when we flash these stock files on xda unless we flash them ourselves. Maybe something screwed up and is being persistent since those partitions aren't getting updated along the way?

I'm honestly just going to restart from scratch and re root when CM10.1 is fully done (hopefully soon...) Nothing is working. Flashed to MB1 firmware on CM 10. Tan MB1 CleanROM. Camera worked in CleanROM, copy/pasted onto my CM10 after the restore, still nothing... Seriously mind boggling.

Probably best, that would be my first thing to try if I had that problem, restarting from scratch. If all else fails, restarting from scratch will wipe out everything. If that failed, I would probably suspect hardware issue.

Well I would recommend liquid 2.5 with the kernel that comes with it and I never change any of the overclocking settings. I don't have to pull the battery at all on this one.

[Q] Camera Failed Error With Roms

I have searched for the answer to this question or an explanation but have yet to find one. I have just started installing ROMS to my phone (SCH-i535) Verizon Galaxy S3 and on every ROM except one ( I think it was AOKP) the camera will not work. I get either a Warning "Camera Failed" or "Could't Connect to the Camera" message. I have tried Multiple ROMS including Jelly Beans, Plasma, Hyperdrive, and a few others. I am able to flash back to a backup I made with the stock ROM and the camera works fine. I have also tried different kernels, different boot recovery's, clearing cache and different versions of these ROMS. I havent seen the same exact issue posted. Any help would be appreciated I would like to be able to use these ROMS but not if I cant use the camera. Also no third party apps have access to the camera either, any torch fails also, sometimes crashing the phone.
csn you screen shot the problem, I may be able,. to help

Not the best quality since i had to take it with my wifes phone, i coudnt take a screenshot.
You can fix the issue by updating your Modem/RPM/TZ/SBL with the flashable zip provided by invisiblek (you can find the link in the sticky rollup thread), and updating your kernel.
Hope that helps
That firmware flash is for version VRBMF1, I am currently using VRBLMD3. What will happen if I flash the wrong firmware. I am just not sure If its ok to flash different versions. Sorry if that's a stupid question
This issue has been reported everywhere it's just a matter of looking,
Anyways it's safe to flash mf1 firmware and you'll be fine.

Well it took 3 different firmwares but it worked, Much thanks to you for the help. Now I can play with the roms and find one I like without trying to deal with the stupid camera

[Q] Bizarre Sound Issue with New Phone??

Hi all,
I've just bought a new SII Skyrocket to replace my Motorola Bravo -- the bravo was terrible purchase and though the Skyrocket is a two year-old phone I consider this a big step up.
I bought the phone on eBay and it was advertised as new. It arrived in its original packaging with the security seal intact, so I have no reason to doubt this. The phone is running ICS (4.0.4 build IMM76D.UFCLF6).
The phone arrived yesterday and I really like it, but I've encountered a weird issue. If I reboot the phone then it is no longer able to make any sound. Any action that requires sound -- incoming calls, outgoing calls, choosing a ringtone, playing music, taking a picture -- causes the phone to freeze for a minute or more and then become very slow. Rebooting again makes no difference. The only solution I've found is to reboot into recovery and factory reset, though this may only work after several tries.
- Has anyone heard of this issue before?
- Is it likely to be fixed by upgrading to Jelly Bean (I'll install a custom ROM if I can be sure that the phone is working properly) or is this more likely a hardware issue?
Apologies if this question has been answered before. I've searched the forums here and elsewhere, but I haven't found any mentions of similar issues.
Thanks for your help!
Try flashing a stock UCMC1 ROM and doing a factory reset after your flash finished successfully and Odin rebooted your phone.
3 things you need:
1- skyrocket windows drivers from Samsung website
2-Odin
3-stock ucmc1 tar ball.

Good luck.

You don't need to install a custom rom. Try updating to official jellybean with kies, if that doesn't work then try C64's advice above with either UCMC1 or UXUMA7 (uxuma7 is less bloated).
The issue you're having is odd and I haven't encountered it before..

Thanks for the suggestions, C64 and lingowistico. Upgrading to JB was going to be my next move, but I wanted to know if anybody had seen this behavior first. I don't want to mess with the phone too much in case the seller will take it back (I may be on a loser there). I'll try the official upgrade and let you know.
Custom ROM not necessary -- true, but I've been running CM on my bravo for a couple of years and can't go back to a stock ROM. I'll try the de-bloated version of the official JB release, but I'd like something I can have more control over.
Cheers...

when phone is doing odd things the best way to ts is a complete wipe, formatting/removing sdcards then returning to stock w/odin, but you could try the debloated rom 1st just to test it out, if its resolved then its prob not hw related, just make a backup of ur current rom if planning on returning it but since you install an official stock it should also be returnable

Thanks Vincom. I don't have access to a Windows machine at the moment so haven't been able to try the upgrade.
One question -- how is it possible to make a backup of the current ROM without first rooting and installing a custom recovery? I suppose that I could install the custom ROM and create a nandroid backup. Then if I needed to restore I could restore the nandroid and reinstall the stock recovery. Is there an easier way?
Apologies, I just saw that you have information on reinstalling the stock recovery on your Newb Guide.
BTW, I want to say thanks for your work on the Newb Guide. One of the things that sold me on this phone was the support that it has here. Amazing to have all of the information on installing the custom recovery, rooting, etc. all in one place.

I believe I had this kinda issue once before, it was when I flashed CM10 or something. No incoming sound, sound did not work whatsoever, but installed a different kernel solved the issue, or flashing a new different rom.

UPDATE:
So, I managed to upgrade to the official JB 4.1.2 this evening. Had to do it twice.
First time the boot got stuck at the AT&T logo and PC wouldn't detect the device. I followed the directions in another post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34682377&postcount=9 to repeat the upgrade and the same thing happened.
On a whim I decided to try rebooting a few times to see what would happen -- and it worked! Sort of...
I'm repeatedly rebooting the phone and sometimes it will start without problem. However, most of the time it gets stuck when the AT&T logo appears exactly where it should play the start up sound, except it freezes and the sound never plays.
I'm guessing that wiping the data before had nothing to do with fixing the problem and I was simply getting lucky on reboot.
I realize that this is a hard question without having the phone in hand -- but does this sound like a hardware issue?
Thanks again to everyone for their help.
Boot into recovery and factory reset from there. That should clear up the boot loop issue.

Why take the OTA when you can just flash the stock Rom? I personally like it but I've always liked TW roms

I know that there' one out there you can flash and maintain a unlocked bootloader but reading the thread sounds like there's a lot of issues with it I use my phone for work so need something 100% eliable Liquid is almost there but still have to do battery pulls get f/c's ,I did have another phone so it didn't matter now this is my only phone
let me rephrase that didn't mean take the ota but flash the official 4.3 which would lock boot loader to take the ota I would have to revert to stock then take the ota easier just flashing 4.3
After a long time flashing custom rom and kernel on my wife S3 and always hear complaints about issue, I decided to flash stock 4.3. Now she's happy with her phone, everything is working smoothly and the phone is pretty fast and snappy, battery life is the best. I have to say, 4.3 is a great improvement over 4.1.2. My recommendation is if you like to play around with flashing custom rom and ok with all the bugs hear and there then it would be fine, but if you want a daily driver, stable phone then stock 4.3 is the way to go. While she's on custom rom, many times when we at a party and when she tried to take picture the camera FC, or displayed weird color, the gps acting up, phone lockup needed to pull the battery to reset etc...Again, if you want a stable, good battery life, go with stock 4.3 and with just root.(I need root to install wifi tethering). Now she has a perfect phone and no more complaints.

that sounds like what I needed to here, did you flash 4.3 or revert to stock and take the ota not sure if there's a difference I already downloaded the stock 4.3
I've had zero issues on the 4.3 rom.
Make a backup and give it a run.

It's depended on what apps you installed on your phone, most of them should be fine with 4.3. When ever I upgrade to a new version, I like a clean install. Do a factory reset (this will wipe all your installed apps and reset your phone back to factory condition, make sure you have a backup of your apps), then let the upgrade run. Once done use saferoot to root.
from crack flasher to stock
i've been a crack flasher since my DX days, having flashed just a couple days after getting my S3. I've been on Hyperdrive, Synergy, AOKP, OSE, stock and various versions of CM to include the best, Mastamoons unofficial.
had to get a replacement phone, and as i was setting it up, the damn thing updated to 4.3 itself.
now... i still get that crackflashing urge, but i will admit, i like having the phone stock. i can make it look like its on any of the other roms, just with minor alterations.
antenna's on the latest is the best i've ever seen, everything works great, and don't see the lag on 4.3 TW as on others.
guess i can live with this for a while, and i do have faith in the DEV community that someone will break the latest, just as in previous versions. But for now, i can live with stock as everything works great!

[Q] Phone Randomly Reboots Itself?!

So after doing a wipe to my phone (was becoming slow) my phone randomly restarts itself for no reason as if it just crashes. I am running the latest version of the beanstalk rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091900 I don't have the greatest understanding of flashing, roms, blah blah blah, but managed to get kit kat working for the last year or so, I don't understand why this is happening now, did I choose a bad rom or something? Everything else on the phone works but obviously constant restarts get to be very annoying.
Any help would be appreciated,
thank you!

Try leaving it turned on in recovery mode (CWM). If it still reboots, then you have a hardware issue. If it stays stable, I would blame the ROM and try a different version or a different distro.

Thanks for the reply,
I don't think it is a hardware issue as it never did this when I had Jelly Bean or even the last time I had Kit Kat, never know though! Also, I will try to leave it in recovery and see if it does it but a few questions:
-What is "distro" (does it has to do with the OS of the phone?)
-Is there some ROM you could recommend to me for this phone that is stable.. When I install the beanstalk ROM there are like 10 to choose from, I'm guessing they are all older/newer versions!?
-Finally something I was wondering for the longest time but wasn't sure of is can I go back to say, Jelly Bean? Or is it "irreversible"?
Thanks again, glad there's people out there who can help the noobs like me!

Methinks it is the specific ROM. I call the different types of OM out there distributions (or "distros" - in light of what is commonly used in the Linux world), but there may be a better term. It could be the version of Beanstalk you are using, it could be any version of BeanStalk with your phone. Hard to say.
In light of above, I would try CarbonROM. I tried it out briefly, and haven;t had a problem with it (and have heard no issues form the guy I sold the phone to with it installed).
But if you want to go back to JellyBean, there is still a version of 4.2 kicking around (CM 10.1) in the development threads. You can downgrade, at worst you may have to ODIN back to stock. But try to flash in CWM first. I was quite satisfied with that version. My biggest gripe is that the mobile data quick setting didn't work fully (but the long way around did). There is CM 10.2 as well, but I could never get that one installed on my phone (installer would break). Between the two, I would try 10.1 (and if you cannot find a copy, I can dropbox it to you).

YES!
So, after I left the phone in CWM for 25 minutes or so and it being fine I decided to get Carbon as I seen in your "signature" that you had that ROM on your Infuse, it has been good for 2 hours+, looking good! I guess it was the Beanstalk ROM after all.
Thanks for the downgrading information as well, wasn't sure if you could downgrade or what would happen!
Finally, what is flashing? (I could google it but since your here, could you give me a noob friendly definition!?)
Thanks for all your help

Went to reply about the camera issue and notice it was no longer in the post. Glad you got it sorted.
So flashing, as I understand it, is just another term for installing something via recovery. Not sure of the origin, maybe have something to do with installing to flash memory.

Ah ok, so it's essentially as I thought it was. I thought I was doing something wrong in terms of "flashing" but guess not! Sounds like it should just be called "Installing custom ROM".. !
Yeah, in terms of the camera thing, I'm an idiot and had USB storage turned on *facepalm*, So it wouldn't let me open the camera app!

I am not sure if you are still facing the same issue but if you are facing reboots, then considering doing a fresh install after cleaning your internal storage as well since the remnants of the apps from previous installs have caused me problems. Ever since I started doing a fresh install (Factory reset, wiping the cache, wiping the dalvik cache and even the cache partition along with the wiping of the internal storage), there have been no reboot issues.
