[Q] HELP- My Files - Sort by Number? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I am just wondering if there is any way to sort files in "My Files" incrementally if the files are numbers??
For example: I have 20 files that have numbers in the file name (1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg....20.jpg). By default, My Files sorts them by name (1.jpg --> 10.jpg --> 11.jpg). This sorting feature is very annoy to me.
Is there a way to sort these files based on the number in their names? Like 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> ... -> 9 -> 10.jpg etc...
Thank you so much. I hope I explain my question well. English isnt my first language.

Yes, rename them with a 0 in front of the numbers 1 to 9 and they will sort the way you want them. (01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg ...... to 09.jpg)

Thank you for the response. I have about ~3000 pictures like this. Manually changing their names is going to take a while.
I guess i have to find a new file management app for this.

If they are numbered incrementally it is likely that they were accordingly taken in the same order(?), in which case you should be able to sort them incrementally by creation date.

I copied them from my laptop to my Microsoft sd card. I tried to sort them by date but it didn't work

Camera picture prefix instead of image_###.jpg

XDA-readers,
I had a question about the prefix you can select in the camera settings.
With this I mean, when a picture is saved, the name is image_024.jpg,
but with a prefix it's for example 20091215_14:00.jpg.
I read that the prefix can only be selected if you save you're pictures to you're phone in stead of the storage card? This I find weird.
Is there a tweak or am I missing something?
Because on my P3600 it was possible to use the prefix.

I did see this the other day, when I was digging round in the registry, and I'd be happy to try and find it again for you, but before I do, I'm pretty sure that you can only set a static prefix. For example, it's currently image001, image002, image003 etc.. You can change the word "image" to something else, but you can't make it save the image with a datetime like you've suggested.
Still want me to look? I don't really see the point in changing it, personally.
Reason
Thanks for the time!
The reason was that I got used to is with my HTC P3600. Most of the time I have my pictures sorted by name and not by date. The handy thing about the date-time prefix is that I could keep the pictures sortbed by name, and have the pictures sorted by date-time at the same time. Also, you never have the same name for new pictures, for example if you reset the counter.
So that's the reason, for you to deside if you put more time in this topic.
many thanks,
Timo

Yeah, I understand why you'd want that, and I'd probably switch it on myself, if it were an available option. I suppose the next best thing would be an app that when run would scan your images folder and rename all the files, according to their date/time.
Hmmm.... may be something for me to look at tonight
Possible
If that's possible, it would be the next best thing indeed.
But the possibility to put the 'prefix' option on would be awesome
I still don't understand why it can only be switched on when saving on the phone memory instead of storage card...

I'm very dubious about that. Where did you get that information?
Just tried it, and it's stupid, but true.
-Put storage on phone (instead of card)
-Then go to the 'prefix' setting and you see you can change it to date-time
it's also in the manual, page 244:
----
Prefix. The file name of a newly captured photo or video is set to “IMAG” or “VIDEO” followed by a sequential number, for example: IMAG0001.jpg. You can also choose the current Date or Date & Time as the file name prefix.
Note You cannot change the file name prefix when saving captured photos to a storage card. Captured photos are named using the convention IMAGnnnn.jpg (where ‘nnnn’ is the counter), and are saved to the \DCIM\100MEDIA folder on the storage card.

Yeah, that is stupid.
Luckily, there's a registry hack to enable datetime prefix when you have storage on the card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3036115&postcount=4
Do the registry change and then soft reset. You can then select storage as card and prefix as datetime.
Thanks mate - I've learned something new today, and I'll definitely use it!
Cheers!
Thanks

Are the folders on the SD card ? My suggestions below:
1) If they are, try deleting them from the Windows PC side via an ActiveSync connection or in "Disk drive mode".
2) Try renaming the folders with 'proper characters' and then delete.
3) If in "disk drive mode", try removing them via DOS command. You may want to do a "dir /X" to see the 8.3 short file/folder name and remove them.
Regards.

No, they aren't on the SD card, they are phone memory. Whenever I try to rename them, I get the same error code, telling me files cannot contain the following..... And as for the last, I don't know anything about DOS, so that would require a level of expertise that I just don't have. I haven't seen any strange behaviour on the phone, and my memory size and usage has not freaked out, nor has my battery life. So what they are or what they are for is beyond me.
The 3 files are names thus:
??????
????Documents
oc????
Very odd.

Jerry,
My suggestions are only if the files reside on the SD card.
I believe the ? means the available fonts, on your phone, does not have the correct character set to display it properly.
Base on my belief above, try the following:
a) My apology being a new member, I am not allowed to post clickable link. Go to this link : add a http:// in front first
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5869460
b) Download and install the "Droid Sans Font.cab" to your phone in post #9. Alternatively, search for the file, arialuni.ttf, (Arial Unicode MS) first on your Windows PC if not then on the web and copy it to your phone, \Windows\Fonts directly. This is a 22Mb file !
c) Restart your phone and see if those files are showing proper characters.
d) If it does, then go ahead, open it and see what's the content like. Rename the file then delete. Uninstall the "Droid Sans Font.cab" if you wish. Personally, I don't like the font as the characters are rasterised.
Regards.
ugh, too much work. My phone isn't acting up, and even though I don't like uninvited strangers, they aren't eating up resources, and my phone is still functioning properly. I will keep these files you suggested handy in case something does start acting up, and see what happens.
yea, I am lazy when it comes to electronic stuff. Thanks for the info!
If you have SK Tools (or a similar app), try scanning the memory. It sounds like you have corrupted files or a corrupted directory. It may not be causing issues now, but it could cause issues sooner rather than later. You may also think about backing up everything now while you can.

[Q] Exclude folders from HTC Album?

Does anyone know how to keep a folder from showing up as an album when you go to the photo tab -> albums and select either "all" or storage/device?
I have a number of folders I'd rather not see (tons of icons and such) and several I'd rather not have others see...
I've marked the folders as hidden, but that doesn't seem to stop the program from finding them. Also tried putting a "~" and a "." in front of the folder name.
Moving to device-neutral Q&A forum so that your question will get greater exposure to the XDA masses.
a 2 Minute Search gave me this

Key
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCAlbum\Ignored
(if ignored doesn't exist: create it)
Make a new String Value and give it any name
example: igo
set the Data for the new value to the full path of the folder to be ignored
example: \Storage Card\iGO8
(note: all sub-folders will be ignored as well)

I am somewhat ashamed that all of the keywords I was looking for seem to be in that post, but I still didn't find it. Maybe I was just hung up on the word "exclude"... in any case, thanks for doing for me what I should have been able to do.

custom sounds

Can we select custom sounds for things other than a ringtone? I want to change my text message sound with something custom. It won't let me select from my custom ringtones though.:/
I used R1ng3d to finally get a ringtone working on this phone, which was painful enough but you cant select these things as say a text message sound.
You'd think something that has been done flawlessly for years would be easier in this new OS, why Microsoft thought it important to make this so difficult is behind me.
Oops sorry I think I posted in the wrong forum section :[
You actually can but after Mango it is a task. You'll first have to Chevron unlock your phone and then interop unlock it and then find a file explorer. The only file explorer around as far as I know that works with Mango is the Windows Phone Manager 1.7 by touchexperience. You will have to go to the touchexperince web page and register and then donate in order to become a beta tester, you will be able then to download the WPM 1.7.

Just found out that if you have an HTC you can sctach that, I have installed WPM and it sees my Windows directory and I can see the Alerts but can't over ride them anymore like in pre Mango. The freaking system files are restricted, every time I try to change something it reverts back to it's original state. F#$ken HTC and MS.
this stinks
why would Mango make this soo difficult?

If you have a registry editor it seems that you can look in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds.
There are some keys and under it some values that seems to be system sounds.
I haven't tested however so be careful.

I uploaded a ringtone file since it's a wma file and changed the registry to point to it but it doesn't see it. I pointed it to \my documents\my ringtones\myalert.wma and nothing. something is locking it down. I'm wondering if anyone with a phone besides an HTC has tried it and succeeded.
This is unfortunate. Really hope ms fixes this in the next patch...would be as shame for them not to. I just don't understand what the big deal is...

If you create CustomRingtone
copy Ringtone to My documents\Ringtones (Not My Ringtones)
go to registry to HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\CustomRingtones
and set new value
Value name = name of your Ringtones file Ex. Ringtone.mp3 Ringtone.wma
Value Data = name appears on the cumtomringtone. you can input any value.
Value Type = String
Ps. Working in Mango

Custom RINGTONES....
If you sync with Windows Zune just change the genre to "ringtone". Your Custom Ringtone is now available in the ringtone-list on the phone..
This does NOT work with custom tones for txt or mails.....

Question Moving photos to new phone (root)

Hi guys. Didn't transfer the pictures off my old phone first thing and now I'm wondering is there a way to copy them across now without it making a new modified date. My new P7P is rooted so wondering if that's any good to me.
I use Google photos but it's annoying having to download stuff to the phone in order to send via WhatsApp etc.
Android phones can be looked at as USB flash drives. You can simply connect your phone to a computer, click and drag the pictures to your computer and then click and drag them from your computer to your P7P.
Both root and apps are irrelevant for this, kind sir.

@NippleSauce, this might make it have a "new modified date" though...which is what I imagine he's trying to go against -- or he probably would have done the obvious of simply copy/pasting....
May I ask why you specifically need them without a "modified date"?
Whether copying/pasting using a computer or downloading from Google Photos, I'm pretty sure the "date taken" or original date created is still preserved in its metadata. I know Windows can sort it by that; i'm unsure if Android 13 stock file explorer can/would, but I'm sure other file explorers can....

The time and date are baked into the photo file. So, copying and pasting it would not alter those settings unless the user had disabled date and time stamps in his previous phone's settings (if that was even an option on their previous phone, of course).

I'm thinking OP doesn't want a "new modified/creation date", like copying & pasting a file -- the new file will have a new "date created" instead of the original which should be the same as when the photo was taken; although I don't know why it would matter to OP so much because, as you said, the "date taken" time & date is "baked" in it....
I can only imagine it has something to do with sorting....

The file modified date should also stay the same, only the create date might be new. Shouldn't make a differnce for most sorting, works fine in Google Photos at least.
Every time I copy data to a new phone I do this in two possible ways:
1. directly from Android to Android with the app Total Commander combined with its Wifi Plugin (links go to Playstore)....
You then then simply copy over Wifi (either using an existing connection to a mutual network or creating a "Wifi direct " network). This method preserves the file dates.....
2. using a PC (which I also use as device backup) via ADB. To make things simpler I use also Total Commander (or Double Commander) together with an ADB plugin. Here also file dates are preserved and its via USB cable, transfer speeds are quite a bit higher this way.....
PS both methods do not require root to work !
