Cyanogen hired by Samsung

Wonder what this is going to mean for future development for CM roms.

Why would it mean anything? Do you really think Cyanogenmod is his day job? He'll keep working on it in his spare time, like he has since day 1.
Of course, even if Cyanogen had to drop out completely, CM has a whole team of people behind it, not just him.

I know it's not his day job, but it may be a conflict of interest with his new one.

Like what if they try to tell him he can't develop for other phones? Hmm...bad thoughts.
Id like to say this is a good thing for the future of CM and modding in general, but I have a bad feeling about it.

Why? Cm7 and custom roms in general are used by a tiny percentage if the phone-buying population. It's difficult to think about, but a good 95% of people that own android phones have no idea what rooting is, will never update the operating system even if an ota us pushed, and possibly don't even know their phone its android. All they know is that their phone is T-Mobile and it lets them check facebook. If they're feeling really adventurous, they might even download angry birds.
These are the kinds if people that Samsung makes its money off of.

you all are thinking in 2D. cyanogen mod will become the "test" environment for samsung. they get free "testing" from tons of users and then they will package and deliver the final product on their phone without having to root. that would make the most sense to me so they should encourage cyanogen mod development.

ya that would be nice. i guess we'll see how samsung behaves. they can be like redhat that offers fedora for free but then they have the enterprise version redhat that they sell. or they can be like oracle who bought our sunmicro and then pretty much ended open office. But i guess open office now diverged into libre office so its not all bad. i guess cyanogen will continue one way or another.

CyanogenMod is a self running system. Download AOSP and convert it to specific devices.
Plus he's one Guy out of a whole team. I'm sure he doesn't touch every device. I wonder if he even touched the G2x?
Although I think this is good news. Perhaps they are just working with Samsung to setup an automated system like the CM team have now... nightlies across multiple devices running the latest Google code. Just tweaked here and there.

This wouldnt be a conflict of interest, he isn't paid by anyone for the work he does with CM. Plus recently samsung has been really buddy-buddy with the development world I highly doubt they would say hey stop working on CM..

Well that settles it, Samsung clearly cares about its reputation with advanced users, and shutting down cm7 is about as hostile as it's possible to be.
This is going to work out great.

Too bad Samsung sucks donkey balls as far as support and continued updates go.... Cyanogen was the guy that helped the companies like Samsung because they never provided continued support for their devices. Hopefully Cyanogen helps them improve their quality, but if not I hope he doesn't do it for free on the side.

I understand the hate towards Samsung during its Behold II days but since then it has gotten better and better until they became the most innovative Android manufacture recently. Their processors continue to own the competition. Everyone wants to get a hold of their displays and NAND memory and every single itteration of TW has gotten less and less intrusive. Their most recent flagship phone, the GSII has already received numerous updates. I don't know what type of update tine frame you would like our phones to get but quite frankly, all update timeframes suck if you buy a US branded phone. If you want to blame someone for our updates then blame our carriers. Updates over seas come out in a timely fassion. The European Sensation has already received 2 but the US Sensation hasn't received one.
So I ask you. What company in your opinion is good with updates and why?

google, because they actually send them out in a timely fashion.
sorry its the only ones i truest anymore, ill likely only go pure nexus branded phone from here out.

I read that webOs was ported to the Evo, and many mobile Os can be flashed on the HD2.

Far from it. The reason we'll probably never see webos or wp7 on the nexus s is that neither of those os's are fully open source like android, in fact wp7 is completely closed source.

webOS was ported to the Evo 3D but virtually nothing worked from what I remember, making it far from useful, useable, or anything past booting really.

Ios - Never been ported to anything non-apple (as far as I know).
Meego - Possible I guess, but I dont know why anyone would bother putting that amount of time into it.
WebOS - Looking possible, its going open source i hear, but the nexus S community is only going to decrease due to the release of the Galaxy Nexus
Windows Mobile - Dead
Windows Phone 7 - This was ported to the HD2 as the HD2 was used as a test phone for the OS and the drivers got leaked! Microsoft used it as it was a high spec Windows Mobile phone. (It got android as it was very similar to other HTC phones that ran Android, such as the N1 and Desire)
Ubuntu - I guess, probably wouldn't be too hard to get going, why anyone would want to I have no idea.
BB OS - hahaha...

I realize this isn't what you're looking for, but if you're just interested in emulating the WP7 look, give Launcher7 from the market a try. I'd also recommend using the Ubermusic music player with the optional metro theme.

WebOS Development

Hello everyone, so i know that this is mainly an android forum, but i wanted to see if anyone was interested.
Im probably going to get the Photon Q to replace my Franken Pre 2, just cuz I can live with android now that its matured a bit more since i played with it on my dads galaxy s 2 (god i hated pre 4.0 android lol).
I wanted to know if any developers would be interested in porting WebOS now that all the source code is available. Honestly i know there isnt a demand but I know there has to be a few WebOS fans out there that would love to see it on this phone.

The port on the galaxy nexus is not running good yet because its in VERY EARLY alpha stages, as would this if someone decided to start it. I fully understand that a port is not going to come in a week or anything like that, its going to take a serious amount of time regardless what phone it is. But if nobody starts you cant finish

I'd be willing to test that. I loved webos.

Lack of development

Just curious...What's the deal with the lack of development with our tab...specifically with the wifi version? Are the developers more interested in other tabs or what? Development just started to pick up and then went dead.

I'm not a developer but speaking strickly as a tablet user I can honestly say this is the first tablet I have owned where I had no desire to modify it in any way. This tablet functions just the way I want it too right out of the box.
So for me , lack of development has never been an issue.

Have to admit, even though I rooted so I could use Apps2SD, my Note is fairly perfect just the way it is.

It could be that they're waiting for jelly bean.
And yeah, the note is pretty much perfect the way it is.
I will say that I had the same problem with my note GT 7000 (the phone) having the perfect GUI.
It would be nice to see some fast kernels and slim Roms though. Maybe some themes.

+1. Exactly my point. ROMs arent always aosp. With our tab, because of the s pen functionality, its a given that custom stock roms would make more sense. But stock roms can always be slimmed down and tweaked.

I have asked a few devs if they could consider developing for the Note 10.1. And they have all asked they have a very tight schedeule but maybe later ( Indiemega) and another said about the same but he would be glad to help (Wanam) if i liked to develop myself. And its really no point in just building something thats no better or diffrent from stock. And that would be what i would have come up with, i dont have any skills to see what MOD or TWEAK would fit nice and that doesnt interfere with some other tweak. Lets just hope for the best and maybe when prices goes down in a couple of months the devs start coming.

I too don't pretty much have any issue in the way my Note 10.1 performs. It is already cool. Plus the promised JB update will make it even better. So why bother developing anything for something that's bound to get better in near future?
Let's wait and see and in the meantime enjoy our precious

Im going to say this again... theres always a need for development. No matter how good the stock rom is we as a community need custom roms. Lol

Develop for those that really need it.

this is the first tablet where i've had where stock is pretty damn good. great battery life, snappy processor, no real bugs... other than some apps i don't need this thing is great as is. even overclocking wouldn't make much of a difference in my usage.
still i'd probably flash a good JB rom when ever they start rolling out.

Devs come super handy when the product you like so mucho gets dropped officially, say goodbye to sweet potatoe pie 6.0, unless you upgrade the hardware.
dont burn bridges man, we need devs in the later years, no doubt.

Ubuntu for Mobile announced!

At the 21 minute mark he says if your phone works with Android then it will work with Ubuntu.... I wonder how that process will work. I also am interested in how to get all our awesome Android apps working too. Another problem will be the lack of video out for us... Anyways, discuss!!
I myself am getting pretty excited about this, I wasn't planning on getting a new phone til the flexible phones came out but this is big news! I might even trade for a Nexus if the dock is small and portable. I wonder how quick it will be ported to our phone?

I'm very excited myself. However in a few months I leave on a LDS mission and will be out with no tech. For 2 years. So I'll only hope this gets put on our phone

ZDNet had a nice article on it but it sounds like it will be an option for the manufactures to offer than a ROM to port.. Ubuntu offers an arm version that you can install and run from within android and that works great, it already works WITH android, this would basicly be an option for the carrier to provide, at Ubuntu there is a link to get their assistance in building ubuntu for specific devices if someone with more time wants to chase it a little. it would be pretty awesome tho.

Yea I think they chose the galaxy nexus because there is full source release instead of the nexus 4. I am hoping that wont be too much of a problem and we can just mod the original release and it wont be too much of a problem. I'm pretty sure android stuff will work with it too, just we will have to download an emulator or some sort. I'll be keeping an eye on this one...
