Hi I have just brought a Samsung galaxy s which I really like but I have a 14 day return period and I am having some doubts.
Gingerbread has recently been announced and I am thinking that it is unlikely that the galaxy s will get an update what do you guys think?
When I had WM (touch pro 2) I could upgrade roms whenever a new device came out, I'm guessing this is more likely to happen with android on a htc device?
I suppose my question would be this, is there any devices which are being released within about a month which will be as good as my galaxy s but likely to last with good updates etc.
Sorry about my vauge questions I just dont wanna spend all this money on a phone to find support gets pulled at the first moment.

I haven't heard of any phones that will be confirmed to have 3.0 (Gingerbread) other then the obvious nexus one.
You will be able to download any custom rom that is written for Gingerbread. You don't really need the official update, do you? I know it is nice, but it shouldn't affect your decision of a phone.
Plus, from what I hear, the Galaxy S is pretty sweet.
samsung chairman has directed the mobile phone division to focus on the galaxy series so I wouldn't worry so much.

Honestly I don't think Gingerbread is aimed at phones at all. I think it's for netbooks and pads really.

Am I the only one that worries more about 2.3 than 2.2? Samsung is literally the last top of the line phone to get 2.2....ridiculous....Will we see 2.3/3.0? I mean this phone should have came with 2.2 or at latest sept. I really expect samsung to support these phones through July 2011. Does anyone else? What's your expectations?
i don't think there will be official 2.3 android...
Samsung is notorious for not supporting updates. They'd rather sell new hardware than update what's out already for free. You're lucky you're getting a 2.2 update even if it is taking forever to release, 2.3 is going to be a stretch though.

We already know the camera is different... I don't think it will be as easy as i9000 to i897.. but yes there is some hope here . Google to the rescue!!!
Actually OP this is why we are all so excited about Cyanogen - BC it has NO Samsung components you can just upgrade to 2.3 once its released.... once cyanogen is final nobody here will be talking about Samsung anymore

It's gonna be quite different. The camera and the soc will be dual core. Could have other hardware different as well.
I wonder how motorola and htc can afford to keep their top phones upgraded and samsung... Doesn't. I mean look at the droid from nov 2009....
I hate to go back to an iPhone next year, but this sucks. Thank god for xda! The devs here should have their own national holiday.
We don't really know anything about its spec just many rumors/fantasy's.
The only thing we do know its a bit curved , possibly a concave display , seen in one of the interview videos.

X10 is not a top of the line device. It was supposed to be out last feb...by the time it came out, middle of the pack at best.
I would not base any standards on a SE device.
we still have a lot of things to play with...I played with Samsung focus and the position of camera&usb&mic I can say it's definitely the same with captivate...
Very true i hate how SAMSUNG doesn't update their devices. I might just get a nexus one now haha

Motorola is supposed to be bringing a dual core phone to AT&T in feb. That's if you like blur. I'm also not sold on dual core either... I mean hello battery drain and for what positives? The soc in our captivate has yet to be pushed by anything android market can throw at it.
The resale value on this phone is gonna be horrible. I sold my 3GS last month for 300. Think in oct 2011 I can sell this phone for 200? Sucks. If the software support was there, they would wipe the floor with apple.

No way. The only reason people are on this forum / using this phone is because this is the only competitive att android. I love android os, but Samsung is so terrible at public relations that nobody will want a phone that never updates and has a broken GPS. You would be lucky to get 200 in 6 months...
Seriously I hope for my sake att doesn't get another good android phone for a while... all the developers will leave this behind

The new dual-core suppose to use less power then current single-core , if its true i wouldn't worrie about power.

See that is exactly how Apple keeps winning the war. Software support. It's an easy Eco system to buy into because the hardware is almost always supported for years. Yes closed systems. But the resale value for notebooks, computers, and iPhones is awesome. My wife will easily be able to pay for her next iPhone by selling the iPhone 4, hell we made 100 profit on both our 3GS. I have bought 2 3GS, an iPad, and a MacBook air.
I really love android and I love the hardware samsung puts out. I just wish they could grasp the concept of full customer support. They just come across as shady salesmen that can't wait to push the next big thing.
If I can't sell my captivate for much $$, I certainly won't be buying the next samsung whatever.

Sorry...I came from a cdma HTC Sprint hero...and people have a right to be pessimistic about all of this. I've been down this road with them where 2.2 was promised..but never delivered..Yes..we could root and flash to other roms including Cyanogen's 2.2 CM6....but..the whole point is getting what was promised to begin with..

The way I see it these companies should make one of the following choices:
1. Sell cellphones with untouched Android. Leave it like wp7 and ios and let google handle software upgrades etc.
2. Have your custom software but support upgrades until hardware is no longer up to par. Maybe make their software downloadable through the market so we just update as needed but can run stock android while waiting.
3. Get out of the cellphone business and just become a hardware manufacture for real cellphone companies that can provide support.
I personally think option 1 is the best.... And most profitable. I mean samsung is stretched pretty thin. They make tvs and washing machines while trying to make cell phones, manufacture chips, and be a software company. Do what you do best and stick with it.

So that makes webOS another free mobile phone OS for companies to choose, and puts it in much more direct competition with Android (or might in time). I won't be surprised to see a lot of webOS phones in a few months.

Does webOS offer anything we can't get from ICS? If so, would it make sense to create some sort of hybrid of webOS and Android that has the best of both and is able to run apps for both?

I think webOS on a galaxy tab 8.9 form factor would be my ideal device. Portable, thin, light and a great OS,

Personally i like Webos. But about 70% of others don't. most likely because of it's lack of customization and apps. It would be nice to see the dying OS ported to other devices to give it new life, but don't get your hopes up.
The devs simply don't seem to be too interested in porting Webos to other devices.

I know it is sad for lack of support but Webos fans will support this. A person on one of the Webos forums is trying to wire the HTC Shift to work with the touchpad's charging dock, so there is still hope!
WebOS isn't open source yet, that's why nobody is porting it. -_-
It's not open source YET, but in a few month it will be and I'm hopeful that some devs will port it on other devices then.
The are two things I'm a bit worried about is webOS for other phones. Since I read a blog post which was all about the open source plan of HP I afraid that only the Touchpads 3.x webOS will be open sourced.
The other thing is the maybe missing feature of using gestures on phones. I mean webOS is all about gestures and I love to use my Pre3 with these gestures and the special gesture area, cause it's easy to use and superfast. But when ported on a phone, let's say a Galaxy S2, will there be gestures or does the user have to use the stupid buttons?

My vote is to port it to a device with a massive user base, such as my SGS2, or an HD2. I still play with my Pre- and it sits on my coffee table. After reading The Verge post mortem I understand why it died, but it still is the best UX hands down. Imagine it running on blazing fast hardware, but I wonder how much is lost without a keyboard?
It seems that everyone has move on from webOS within the android community (well, almost everyone). I am one of the die hard fans of the OS and continue to use it daily. Of course, my needs for an OS are different from many , and I come from a solid Linux/Unix background. I have used palm products for years and followed webOS from the beginning. There are times when I come off like a fanboi for webOS but it has seemed to be an elegant solution for true multi tasking from the beginning. I hear most folks here talking of the untimely demise of webOS and cannot help but wonder if they have decided not to follow the development of Open WebOS. The community edition of webOS is due out in Sept and there are a number of major improvements coming with it. There is also the Phoenix project which may be building another tablet running the open source WebOS.
For those who have moved on from webOS and are satisfied with android, I bid you fair well. I will continue to work within the webOS community and look forward to future development. For those who are still on the fence, I would suggest a bit of patience as there are good things in the future of webOS and this fall really isn't that far off. Whichever OS you choose, remember that the touch pad that you have is still one of the few dual boot tablets on the market and (for those who were not early adopters) was purchased for a reduced price that would be hard to match by any other tablet manufacturer. The hardware is still pretty good compaired to most all dual core tablets and is still able to run cutting edge android builds. This alone would be a good argument for sticking with the touch pad but I stick with it for the things it continues to do well within webOS.

I remember when I had my pre you could place your phone in dev mode (root) by a simple dialer code reboot and itd be unlocked then you can install preware and from there install anything you want. I remember patches that added lots more functionality to the OS. Much simpler than android

I'll buy the lack of apps argument, but customization? Kiddin' me? Installing Preware couldn't be any easier if they tried. Only Windows Mobile was easier than webOS.

Ideally webOS that could run Android apps would be great. The UX on webOS is second only to Windows Phone IMO, but webOS needs the app power of Android.
I had a Pre+ for a weekend but after the third time swapping it out because of hardware problems, I gave up on it. The hardware was always the problem. They should have had HTC manufacture it like the Treos.

I've been following, off and on, the struggle Entropy and other devs have been having with Samsung to ensure clearer documentation and accurate source files. It seems like Samsung may have opened up a little with their Insignal repositories. What I'd like to know - and haven't been able to discover - is if Samsung has already (or intends to) release the same for Exynos 3 (hummingbird). The source up on their regular opensource site is clearly not complete. Also, have Samsung opened up enough that Cyanogenmod will continue developing for Samsung devices?
I have a few reasons for asking. One is that I have another year on my contract with the Infuse and feel pretty annoyed that Gingerbread is as high as they'll go (my fault, but before this, I really had no concept of how primitive Gingerbread is). I'm happy that development has lived on here on xda, but I'd like to have a properly working camera. I don't think that's going to happen until Samsung open up.
The other reason is that, having read all Entropy has had to say on the matter, I won't buy another Samsung phone for me or family members until I know development can continue beyond AT&T and Samsung's arbitrary schedules.

Every manufacturer is bad with source unless its a nexus...if its not a mexus then they do the bare minimum
Anyways...I have no actually answer for your question...just felt like letting you know they are all bad...

I know! Afterlife development is what Android has going for it over iOS (IMHO). I guess Moto, Samsung, HTC, etc - just like every freaking retailer in America - really want everyone to buy into iOS? Had I opted for an iPhone 3GS, I'd still be eligible to upgrade to iOS 6. & I would have been able to copy and paste a tracking number the day I booted up my phone! LOL! Now, do I want a walled garden to enclose all my other walled gardens? Or do I want a walled garden with a gate?

Have you looked at the JB Roms for the infuse? I'm loving The ParanoidAndroid port Scott's done.. I've also put the AOCP rom on there as well as an AOKP rom but I always go back to PA..
as soon as the infuse was in my hands I installed a JB Rom I never had to deal w/ Gingerbread or Froyo or even ICS.. I did the same for my captivate and my 2 Skyrocket 2's as well..

I'm not sure why you ask. Yes, is the answer, but I don't know what that has to do with the topic. The camera doesn't work properly on JB and I don't think it will until either a) a developer with particular expertise in digital recording has time to spare or b) Samsung releases the source. I've tinkered enough with the source to know more or less what the main problem is, but where it is and how to solve it is well beyond me. There are other little problems too, but they may not be important in the long run.
I often wondered why Entropy called the Infuse, the Confuse. When I started rifling though the source, I found out: the Infuse is a Frankenphone.
I wasn't thinking of the video recording functionality w/ regards to the camera. Apart from that, it all works quite well for me. I haven't tried the 4.2 AOSP based ROMs so I don't know about the video recording functionality of that. I highly doubt Samsung is interested in furthering the development of the infuse as its getting pretty old.
