I'm running the stock OS on my sidekick and am running out of memory on the internal SD card. It can't run the updates. I have only a handful of apps downloaded. T-mobile won't let me delete a whole host of stupid apps I never use. I went through and moved everything to the external SD card that would move (very few apps are willing to move, grrrrr). I even deleted the updates to all the stupid apps that can't be moved on the assumption that they always get larger over time (is this a correct assumption?) and turned off the auto en masse updating.
Anyway, I'm out of ideas. I guess this is a rant because I don't have much hope. It annoys me no end that the idea of android and having control of the device gets destroyed by the carriers.
Still loving the keyboard. I'd marry it if it was legal to.
[I just want a phone that does a few things reliably and I don't want to spend the hours I did with my last android rooting and re-rooting it, I added it up and it was 16 hours, at least, at 125 an hour for my personal time it was the single most expensive thing I've ever owned.]
Rooting this phone will fix your problem and will take a novice 20min and a pro 3-5min, choice is yours though

As demkantor said, rooting the SK4G is not very tough even for newcomers. Pretty straightforward and once you finish the process you can use those shiny new root permissions to delete things like the app-pack, qik-vidchat, and all that other bologna. Check the dev section and it's all there.
I agree, just root and install a lightweight ROM. It's not that difficult or time-consuming. Then you can tailor the phone to your liking. Or you can try Googling "android remove bloatware without root." Quite a few how-tos will come up, although I can't vouch for any of them.
Easy remove

For the easy then, SuperOneClick works for root. it's super and one click for the sk4g. "Titanium backup" can then delete everything that has a neon pink icon (TMO bundled crap, there is lots) Most of the "neon pink" is safe to remove, please someone correct me if something doesn't fit the large generalization.
Should be less than an hour.
For your problem root the phone then update superuser an download /system/app an you can delte the useless apps from tmobile or stuff you don't use
Or you can install a rom which would fix a lot of problems
P.s. also after root download clean master an run it every few days go through an delete the bs stuff you don't use folders that were not deleted

Ok, so i did search before i posted this and i even looked through all 5 of the similar threads that popped up when i wrote the title for this one but none of them answers my question so i'm posting...
Background:
I'm pretty new to Android, got a Dell Streak back in Oct '10, and loved it. Rooted, put DJ_Steve's StreakDroid on yada yada... Broke my streaks screen and got an Inspire from my Best Buy warranty.
Now, to root this Inspire it seems its a LOT more involved... Making a gold card etc.
My question:
When you reformat the SD card, what happens to all the folders that are on it? Do they get recreated or are they gone for good? Are they even that important? I noticed some Adobe, Yahoo folders, which i assume can be re-created easily once the apps are reinstalled/opened back up but others on there like dcim, Android, Data, etc etc that look to be more important. Do i need to do anything special or just hit reformat? I'm looking at making my included SD card the gold card and taking my Streaks old 16GB card and using it for day-to-day use. So i guess i'm just looking for any "gotchas".
Thanks in advance to anyone who offers their help.

If any important data is in those folders, you should save them on your computer. For example, pictures in DCIM folder, music, videos.... or documents that you created..
While creating the gold card, the sd card will be formatted and you will lose all data.
After the phone is rooted, you can then format the card using the phone's "Format SD card" tool, and then use the card as normal.
All those folders will be recreated once those apps are installed.
Edit: Also, if you look in the Dev's section, there are tools that will help you with the whole process of rooting your phone.
Thanks Kirk! Yeah i've been reading up on the SuperOne Click and the Hacker Kit. Just trying to read and reread the stuff so i know what to expect. I'd like to watch the tutorial video for Super One Click but i'm at work and Youtube is blocked so i'll watch it at home tonight.
Just looking to see what one is easier and would give me the best chance of not royally screwing up my phone. I kinda get the gold card thing and what it does but seems so silly at the same time that i have to use an SD card and then put it away to use it for later if i decide i wanna go back to stock...
I guess the ease of hacking the Streak kinda spoiled me. Especially for my first Android phone

The inspire is my second android phone. I had the captivate and it was very easy to root. Prior to the captivate, I had the eyephone. So glad I went with an android phone. Sick and tired of the same UI with iphones.
Although the entire rooting process for the inspire seems overwhelming, it's actually pretty straight forward when you follow the instructions.
I haven't heard anyone "bricking" their inspire yet and if you get stuck in the rooting process, search the forums and you will most likely find your solution.
What route did you decide to use? The Hacker Kit or SuperOneClick?
Yeah i had a Captivate for about a month, it was just a loaner from AT&T until the Streak Come out. Previous to that i had the iPhone 3g as well. Hated playing in Steve's sandbox... and i abhor iTunes. I can't think of a bigger POS software.
I guess the Streak had its moments trying to root. I used the QDL tool which needed to be run through Fastboot with a couple commands. It was getting the damn Dell ABD driver running correctly on the PC which took the longest time.
Anyway, thanks for the info Kirk. I'll see if i can't get this thing cooked up tonight. I really wanna try CoreDroid, and get the battery life on this phone to a respectable level. If its just sitting in standby its ok, but as soon as you use it the percentages just tick away quite quickly.

I used the hack kit. Went ok. Had some slight issue when i tried to use a 1GB SD card that apparently is too small for a gold card. So, then I decided to just use the SD card that came with the phone and all went well!
I also have to agree with hating itunes... They keep cramming useless features and just makes the whole user experience a little less interesting.
Im glad that with android devices, you don't need any specific program to sync your stuff to the phone... Just plug in and done!
I'm in the process of deciding whether I get the Inspire or wait for the Infuse. I'm new to smart phones, but been reading a ton.
My question; is the 4 GB on the Inspire sufficient for the numerous apps I am likely to put on it? I think I've read about apps that let you place apps on the mSD. Is this even a concern I need to worry about?
Thanks for the help. Searched the forum and didn't see this addressed. Probably means it's a dumb question. I'm trying to get smart
Unless your going to have a couple hundred apps you shouldnt really worry to much.

I've downloaded plenty of apps and never even gotten close to using up the internal memory. I move what I can to the SD card, usually (it's not hard to do, and it's a feature built into the phone now).
Ditto, you'd have to work pretty hard to fill up that space, most programs are pretty small. But remember that many applications now support the A2SD function, so in the unlikely event that you start running out of room, moving them to your SD card is an option. I notice very little performance difference between apps on the card and apps run internally.
I'm pretty sure i already know the answer on this, but just checking. Is there any way to delete bloatware via adb or something without rooting? OR (before the flame party starts) ... is there any way to root without doing a factory reset?
NOW: the reason why i ask is i just found out one of my mom's friends also has a shift. She's been getting quota errors on her phone and even though she's uninstalled some apps, a lot is being ate by stock installed bloatware that she doesn't use. I'd like to be able to get some of that cleared out for her, but she's not super tech savvy and I'd rather not inconvenience her with having to reinstall everything and set it all back up.
If not, I'll give her the option of a full root and run an a2sd rom on it for her too. Just trying to see what all of my options are. I apologize in advance if this has already been covered. I haven't had much time to search. Internet's off at home and my signal's been too spotty to use the xda app. Only have time to check stuff at work and I couldn't find exactly what I needed.
Without root I doubt you could do enough for it to even matter.
Only thing you can do without root is install a factory ruu image, which will wipe everything, but will also be an actual fresh install rather than just formatting user data with a factory reset.

Can't she just use the native 2.2+ apps 2 sd? Like go into the app info and click move to sd. Otherwise i like to use zdBox which will kinda do a batch move. Also it will clear cache and a lot of other things. There's also a program called link2sd which will do the ext partition move and native apps2sd.

She probably could but like I said, she's not really tech savvy. I could set it up for her, but it wouldn't put her mind at ease. I'm pretty sure she needs the visual of looking in her app drawer and NOT seeing the apps before she can fully stop stressing about her phone. But we'll see. I have the next couple days off so I'll talk to her. If she doesn't have too much data to move I'll just root and help her set up either newSENSE or Supreme and call it a day. If that proves to be too big of a hassle I'll offer her the native apps2sd option and try to convince her that her phone won't blow up on her. Or it might not matter cuz she might be upgrading ... in which case I'll just get the phone off of her as a backup and root it for me lol.

I guess my main inquiry was is there a way to "root" enough to remove bloatware. I think before they found the 2.3.3 exploit though the best that could be done was "freezing" while in temp root but i think all the apps came back after reboot. Dunno...
Root it, and do it right. She and you will be much happier in the long run. My friends girl was the same if not worse about her EVO4G. She thought that Sprint would call and accuse her of rooting the device . I let her think what she wanted to. Rooted and Mikafied his EVO. After two days he called me and said she changed her mind after using his phone. The biggest thing is letting a person see what the differences are, and what the advantages will be to Rooting.
Convincing her of the benefits of rooting is no biggie ... the hassle i was trying to avoid was her having to completely set up everything on her phone again. Not the biggest inconvenience, but she might be debating getting another phone too. I'm not overly pressed about it. I won't see her again until next weekend, and at that time i'll let her make her own decision. Worst case scenario, she decides to opt for something like the Galaxy S3 and i talk her into giving me her shift as a backup. Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I was just wondering if there was a less obtrusive way to delete her bloatware than a full wipe/RUU.
Well either way, hope it works out for the best .
Recently I have switched from my hard headed (non smarphone) ways, to using a prepaid smart phone, it is an entry level phone, and I only have facebook ap installed. I would like more and I have a memory card in it as well. However the mass amounts of updates from aps I never use clog up my memory and lag my phone down quite a bit.
Lots of post on Rooting and Super Users, and other things like Backups and all that.
I do not understand a lick of it. Is there one ap that lets me just go in and delete these pre installed aps?
If not, is there a walk through (step by step) option that I could follow, on my pc, or my phone.
Any help will be awesome. I am not good with this, so keep in mind each and every detail will help me, skipping any minute detail will only hurt me. links also help.

sorry mate it looks like rooting is your only way, phone company's put a thing in the boot loader in the phone that makes it detect the bloatware the phone comes with and will Brick your device. now since I see your phone comes with gingerbread you may be able to use this GingerBreak this works on most gingerbread phones so its worth a try on yours! if it works on your phone send a message to the creater of the method and give him a thanks!
Does anyone own this phone?
I may have to get one and was just wondering if its a decent phone or not.
Things are tough right now and I don't think we are going to be able to pay our Verizon bill and I may have to just go spend the $40 at walmart to pick this up
Anyone had any success rooting this phone? How about CWM?
Please let me know.
Thanks!
I have one and root is possible, but the bootloader is locked because virgin mobile is bein stupid so cwm is out of the question so if u get one and root it be careful. I suggest a different carrier like at&t Go Phone

Just bought this phone a few days ago from amazon. I got it to replace a Kyocera Rise that I unceremoniously managed to boot loop when I went NUTS with checking too many options using the Pimp My ROM app. I nearly had that one for a year, so in a way, not a big loss for me, as I paid around $50 for the Event (incl. one day shipping).
I haven't activated the phone yet, but doing everything else on it seems to be all right. I've tested a couple of 3D games on it already: Temple Run 2, and Raging Thunder. Seems to run both fine, with only a tiny bit of lag on TR2. That can be improved once the phone is rooted. For now, I'm using my older, rooted LG Optimus V as my cell phone. I'll probably load a couple of benchmark apps to see how the phone holds up.
I loaded a full MP4 movie (rip from DVD) onto the Event to test 2D video.
The Event has about 1.2 GB of internal storage available, but the more important issue is the system RAM. It has 360 MB available out of 512 MB. That's only 3 MB more than the Rise... aack! But that can be improved upon once the thing's rooted. Ordered a case + screen protector for the Event earlier this morning... as soon as that arrives, I'll have the phone activated. Then I'll root it. I might skip out on doing any big fixes on this one. The main issue I had with the Rise anyway was with the wifi reception. It seems to be much better with the Event, from my own usage. Also, the cell phone signal bars seem to light up higher with the Event, so I shouldn't have too many problems with phone calls and texts. That usually means better 3G reception as well.
When this phone's rooted, these are the only fixes I'd do to it:
1. Editing the /system/lib/egl/egl.cfg file. Back up the original, name it egl.cfg.bak, then edit the original like this:
0 1 adreno200
# 0 0 libEGL
It looks something like that, but basically, put hashtags on the other lines to uncomment, or delete them. That fix enables the Event to use only the hardware drivers for 2D and 3D full time. Makes a huge difference in phone performance. Edit the permissions first, from r-- to rw- before editing the file. Once it's saved, put the permissions back to r--, then reboot. If you don't do this, the phone may boot loop!
2. Titanium Backup. This can backup all the apps on the phone, including some system apps. TB can be used to freeze unwanted apps as well. Some folks suggest uninstalling the bloatware, but I wouldn't do it, in case the phone gets a system update. Freezing should be fine.
3. Link2SD. This is essential if you want to free up space in internal storage. I use this to link any app that can't be installed to the SD card. It requires a second partition; I used FAT32 (2 GB partition) with the Rise, as it didn't have a custom ROM that had the ext4 modules. This will probably be the same for the Event. When formatting the SD card for this, make sure that the main partition that the phone reads upon booting has the boot and lba flags checked. I use gparted in Linux to partition and format SD cards
4. Greenify. This allows apps to hibernate when the phone is idle. It even hibernates some apps while you're using the phone, saving you some memory and CPU cycles. That can help save some battery power.
For now, I'm using Advanced Task Killer to maintain some free memory and help reduce unwanted CPU cycles. Green Power Premium cuts off the 3G/WiFi when the phone is idle. ATK kills apps, but I set it to work every two hours. That lets the phone do its memory tasks, while ATK kills the more stubborn apps (mostly the bloatware I don't use).
Hope that helps you out, and good luck.
Thanks for the input guys.

I got this phone for $20 at Walmart's Black Friday sale. For that price who could pass up Android 4.0x? Despite its apparent lower quality, I am quite pleased with its overall performance and the virtual keyboard, surprisingly, works better than a many other phones I have tried.
permission question
Hey all,Ive never messed with changing permissions,I have an Event and Im wonder ing when I open the permission page with root explorer it reads like this
READ WRITE EX
OWN X X
GROUP X
GLOBAL
In the post it says "from r-- to rw- before editing the file" Dopes this mean OWN has 1 X,GROUP has 2 X,and GLOBAL is blank correct? Then edit file and change to how it was in the begining? Thanks alot!!!!
Sorry to rehash and old thread but this one seemed to fit the best to what I am experiencing and what I'd like to ask.
I have owned this phone a little over 3 months now, switching from LG Optimus V, I have some grief from the day one.
First and foremost, it is very unstable. On the average, I have to hard reset it once a day, most of the time, more than just once. And when I say Hard Reset, I mean holding the power button down forever for the phone to reboot as the screen doesn't show anything. A few times, I went as far as removing the battery.
Question 1. I looked around hard and I didn't see any custom ROMs or any custom recovery modules, likes of clockwork. Am I missing something ?
My main concern was the ability of running FoxFi and as expected, it did not run on this one. So, I took the advie of some guys over at the android forums and loaded up poot to root it. It seems to have no problems with rooting. But afterwards, I have tried few hotspot apps and never been able to turn on this fjunctionality. I know the apps I chose required root access and I turned it on before starting the app, but nada...
Question 2. How can I get either FoxFi working on this thing ? Or short of it, how can I make any (suggestions welcome) WiFi hotspot app working with it ?
Thanks in advance

Yes I own a virgin mobile kyocera event and sucessfully rooted device with no problems at all. The process is much more simplified now than it was when I rooted, so lucky you And your going to want TWRP so you can use the recovery stored on SD if you do come across and bootloop or brick issues. Its worth the $30 I spent It's not the best by far, but its really pretty capable once rooted. Much better than I had expected. I hope I was of help to you, and if u decide to buy it and need help rooting I'm down.
