SQ iPhone 5 vs S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I got my S4 yesterday, and I’ve been playing with it musically for a little bit, so I thought I’d post my results.
References:
•iPhone 5 Hip Hop EQ Preset
•S4 PowerAmp with posted EQ settings
•Monster Turbine earphones
•Obsidian Audio 15’ car subwoofer
•Mix of bassy Hip Hop/ R&B/Screamo Metal, vocals, its a good mix I think
I played Ellie Gouldings “Explosions” and “My Blood” on both my iPhone 5 and S4 with my monster turbines, constantly going back and forth to get the S4 sounding as similar as I could get it to the iPhone 5. This is what I came up with. I wouldn’t say I FINETUNED it, but it was pretty close IMO to the iPhone 5.

With these settings, here we go...
Right off the bat, the iPhone 5 sounds better. The trebles sounds better, more pitched, voices sound clearer and more “forward” than the rest of the sound stage. And generally the music sounded like it “surrounded” you more. The music was way more 3 dimensional. Bass response seemed to have more impact, more punch, slightly SLIGHTLY more depth, and during some songs was CLEARLY “fatter” and more rounded off than the S4. There was definitely more quality bass from the iPhone than the S4.
Honestly, I can’t say that the S4 with Poweramp shined in any particular catagory better than the iPhone 5.
I am very particular when it comes to music, and I have 2 different enviroments. I’ve got some $150 Monster Turbines, that crank out good SQ (for what its worth), and I also have a huge 15’ subwoofer in my car that can fart out the lows like no other. Listening to my system in my car with the S4 actually really gave me a negative feeling about the phone. The bass didn’t sound as clean, as deep, or as fat. And in general, I noticed a pretty big difference in the loudness of my system. Its not as loud as I know it can get. I drove to and from the mall feeling like I was missing a big portion of my bass.....So much infact that if I can’t find a decent sound mod like ACID Audio or Viper Mod to suit my needs, than I will be buying an iPod SPECIFICALLY for my music...and this pains me because I’m used to having 1 device for everything.
I guess it just comes down to my tastes. I’ve grown very particular with my musical SQ from both my headphones and my car system with my iPhone 5. I can say that with headphones I am very content with the quality that I am getting relative to the iPhone 5, but when it comes down to my car system, I feel sick, I feel like I don’t even want to listen to my system, or even DRIVE for that matter. I bought an amazing sub (I’m not contesting the name Obsidian Audio. You can research for yourself) and now that I know what I can get out of that sub, I am extremely disappointed...
Overall, if you have headphones, tweaking will get you pretty close. If you have a system in your car and your particular to how loud and good that system sounds, then you might be disappointed.
This is relative to my own opinion. Enjoy

I would stick with the iPhone 5 it kills sgs4 in this department or get HTC one which kills them both.

I wish I had a 15' sub in my car. My budget only allowed a 15". Lol

I wonder how the international model with the Wolfson chip would compare.

I'm not really an audiophile but I thought the sgs4 had decent audio drivers? Hmm

Interesting feedback... But remember, this is purely subjective. Not that feedback isn't good, but it's just one person.

The audio is good in the s4 ,...with a decent pair of headphones( Klipsch S4A is what I use, owned tons of earbuds and other headphones and have spent a ridiculous amount of money until I found what I wanted these things r awesome) the s4 does sound the best out of all the galaxy series phones ,in my opinion of course..by way of car audio, I can't make an opinion as I've never hooked the s4 into my vehicle, that and I'm really not into car audio, def use to be though lol , I'm too much into home audio to start pouring money into audio for my car,. S4 by way of home audio is awesome, playing videos from the phone to the tv, listening to music, controlling my receiver with my phone, the sound quality is really good, the whole audio and video experience is better on my s4 than the s3 imo. ...Good comparison test btw

I'm an iPhone hater but those phones always have very good internal DAC's. You can use an external DAC with the S4 or use the APT-X Bluetooth.

I myself am in audiophile, with studio monitor headphones and studio monitor speakers...spent close to a 1k on the three of those (now I'm poor )
With that said, the s4 was extremely disappointing in sound quality to me, its alright and will get by for day to day use...but I can't see me using it as my portable multi media player
My Samsung infuse with Wolfson dac is much much better...so looks like ill be keeping that around for music...I'm really curious how the international s4 with a Wolfson dac compares...I wonder if Wolfson still stands up to its reputation
Someone mentioned using an external dac...and I think ill defiantly have to look into that with the s4, the thought of even possibly being able to do that never crossed my mind, although it will be a pain to have to carry it around...

I have to say I agree with you op. I originally went from the S3 to the HTC One and was blown away by the audio quality out of that phone. I have all Polk speakers in my car and mostly use either Klipsh S4s or Koss PortaPros. I had no idea what I was missing using the S2 then the S3 to power these things. All along I haven't been to impressed with the audio quality out of my Polks, but the problems was I don't have them amplified. I found that out with the One, which has a built in headphone amp putting out 2.55v which made a noticeable improvement in audio quality. Very noticeable. Even the headphones that the One came with were great. Unfortunately HTC has the worst quality control I've ever seen and I tried exchanging the device many times only to see that every other one had the same issues. Stuck pixels, gaps in the "gapless" design, way too warm to the point of being yellow displays. So I took that back for the S4 and have been sorely let down in the audio quality department. It just doesn't sound anywhere near as alive as the One did. Bass is muddy on the S4 where the one it was extremely crisp and punchy. Random Access Memories sounded incredible when hooked up in my car. Even with no sub it was pushing my speakers to have a nice thump, but not that muddy rattling bass. So now I'm debating on if I should try for the One again, or just get a portable amp/DAC and take the audio quality out of the equation altogether.

I just came from an iPhone 5 and am also an audio head. For one using any eq to 'boost' any levels is going to yield **** fart can sound. I have a full nuts system in my TDI and the s4 v iPhone showed no difference in output.
I keep my eq's flat and let the audio mix drive the levels. Allll my audio is v0 or flac or alac.
~bass boost is bad

Phew, thankfully I'm not going crazy. I read people's opinions here that the S4 sounds just as good if not better then an iPhone. I
too thought the S4 sounded very bad compared to the iPhone right out of the box. Mine was the iPhone 4s. S4 is very empty and flat. Bass response isn't as good and the highs get a little shrill on some cymbals. Very very dissapointed in the S4 sound quality but I have no choice now, I've made the switch and that's that.

Try winamp?

I've been lurking around here a long time, but this might be my first post. So... I might be a noob.
However, I did have an iphone 5, which I lost recently... i picked up the s4 two weeks ago. Before the iphone 5, I had the s3 and the note1. Anyway, I thought audio sounded pretty good from the s4, until I started playing out of a bluetooth speaker and my bluetooth headphones. I tried poweramp, the build in music player, and was very disappointed. Volume was too low, SQ was horrible. I downloaded Winamp and used the equalizer for $5, and the s4 sounded much better. Now, when I use regular plug-in headphones (klipsch s4a) i use poweramp, because the headset controls work so well. But when I'm playing through bluetooth, including the motorola sd10, I'm using winamp.
I think the s4's audio issues are most likely software related. I've read tons about android not having great support for bluetooth... I'm not sure what that means, but I suspect it might be playing a role here.
So, TLDR, try out winamp

That would be me, in the post directly above yours.
Here is the Android & DAC mega-thread. In it you'll find a list of DAC's that work with various Android phones.
Also note that some "medium-fi" DAC's are now the size of a quarter and fit inline with your headset cord.
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs
Last I checked, the DAC's were not working with S3 phones and AOSP ROM's. But worked fine with TouchWiz.
I have not checked the status on S4's yet because I moved on to APT-X "high def" bluetooth. Which sounds fine for me. And the convenience of it far outweighs any negatives in audio impact.

I have found that out of the box Neutron Player sounds better than PowerAmp. I'm guessing you can tweak PowerAmp to sound just as good, but I like Neutron Player because it doesn't require as much tweaking. Prefer PowerAmps interface though, but oh well.
Sadly my Fiio E07K does not work with usb audio on my i337 S4.

I've been really pleased with Spotify (extreme quality) quality on S4. I play music over blue tooth in my car all the time and my s2 was a nightmare, but I haven't noticed a difference in my recent phones (HTC One X, S3, S4). All have sounded great.
The Galaxy phones are quieter than my HTC. That's only a problem on airplanes but a volume booster or even Samsungs built in Adapt Sound solves that.

Some scenarios there is significant lag. My civic si has Bluetooth built in for calls and audio and there is about 2 second delay when skipping songs or albums. Miss the first two seconds or so songs also.

Pretty Disappointed with the Audio side of the SkyRocket

Coming from the Captivate, I was used to the excellent sound quality it provided with it's Wolfson WM8994 DAC processor.
Sadly, I can't say the same for the Skyrocket. The floor noise and the whining from CPU cycles is downright annoying on quieter songs with sensitive IEMs. Audio sounds mushy, more focused to lower end of the spectrum with more bass (and sloppy bass at that), Mid-Bass wasn't any better. Overall, lacks clarity and definition. In general, I've heard better sound come out of cheapy chinese mp3 players.
On the other hand, the Captivate is an EXCELLENT music player (Audiophile quality). I used it with my headphone amp and my Senn HD-600s and it was my primary source.
If you ever get a chance to listen to a Galaxy S device with WM8994 DAC w/ Voodoo enabled. 128x oversampling on a nice pair of cans and then to the Skyrocket, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Samsung, I'm Very disappointed. I know the average consumer doesn't care and wouldn't care but how could you DOWNGRADE??? How could you make a multi-media product and are not able to isolate the (AT THE MINIMUM) interference from the cpu!!! The whines, the clicks, the hissing, is downright ANNOYING and screams CHEAPNESS!
Glad I kept my Captivate, atleast it's serving me well as a source player.
I've noticed the bad sound as well
Been doing some looking around and seems like same issues can be found in the Galaxy S II....pretty much throughout the whole GSII lineup.
More than likely due to the Yamaha chip Samsung decided to go with.
Yeah I noticed that too, it was there with my old Xperia X10 and seems worse with the Skyrocket. Its not much of an issue to me since I listen to bassy music but it gets annoying when I listen to Trance during low bass intervals. All you hear is hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssss
Only workaround is bluetooth
DSP manager in ics themed roms helps. The Voodoo developer just released voodoo louder for the galaxy s II but the hd and lte versions are not supported. Hopefully he will get around to it since it uses the same yamaha processor as the gsII, just a different processor. Why did Samsung have to make so many changes to the same lineup...

Yeah. This is where Samsung Galaxy line really sucks at. It is not unbearable for casually listening on the go. I used to consider myself an audiophile. But the difference is that I love my Galaxy S2 over my priority for audio fidelity.
If you really wanted to get lost in your music by sitting in a dark, silent room, and really have nothing between you and your visualization of music, this is absolutely not the device to do it with. The iPhone wasn't the perfect device for this either, but at least the iPhone can seemingly play noise free music, unlike the Galaxys.
It sounds like it is raining outside and a tea kettle has reached boiling point from a far but audible distance.
I think mp3 players in general, including the iPod and iPhone, have made me lose my love for music. Music feels like it lacks soul. It is probably because the soul moving subtle near inaudible parts of music has been filtered out for us by data saving codecs.

Haven't heard the original Galaxy S series with Voodoo Sound, have you?
Supercurio (probably the biggest audiophile of all audiophiles) made new sound drivers for the Galaxy S series, that basically make it the best sound chip in the market (Wolfson Microelectronics FTW).
It bests anything, including the iPhone, without a problem.
Headphones, etc make a big difference. I'll be ordering something from headroom, http://www.headphone.com/index.php but, I'm not spending a ridiculous amount of money.
Going with the different players and DSP manager just masks the problem by using eq at the software level. The floor noise and cycle whine is a hardware caused issue, a poorly designed system where the headphones/codec are not shielded well.
It's not just the floor noise and whining. Overall the DAC lacks substance. sounds are muffled, There's no definition in the mid bass. upper spectrum lacks detail etc etc.
You'd never know and hear this unless you hear a GOOD source with a good DAC first.
MiMart, headphones do make a difference, obviously. My senns HD-600s are one of the best out there. But it'll only perform as good as the power/source you provide it.
Sensitives IEMs don't stand a chance on this phone in my opinion. Especially something isolated and sensitive like the Etymotic er6i's.
I'm just looking for something better than craptastic in ear buds the phone came with. Agreed software, and good headphones can only do so much with a so so quality audio.

You beat me to it! My Captivate with Voodoo Sound was the bomb. When I got the Skyrocket I compared the two and the Captivate killed it. Used it as a WiFi media player for a few weeks and then needed money so I sold it. Wish I kept it!
I've heard no Voodoo coming for the Skyrocket. Thank you Yamaha chip set!
The more I listen with the included ear buds, the more I find the audio is lacking. I've tried multiple music players, with the same song (flac) with different setting for the eq all with the same lack luster results. I want to get better head phones, not sure if it is worth the money to spend a bit of $100 or not.
Beside the inclusion of the LTE, i believe samsung has cheapened out A LOT on this phone. A lot of people are experiencing screen issues with this model (mine included and i returned it for a different one that still has similar problems) The camera while fine in an areas that are well lit, is utterly worthless in the dark. Even my old SE k800i had better optics in the dim settings than this pos. My microUSB cable has even failed.. i mean wtf how does that fail!? it barely charges and when you connect the phone to the computer, neither devices recognizes each other. When I change the cable for my old SE microusb connect everything works fine.
I cannot recommend this phone to anyone. As soon as there are other LTE devices out there im going to book it.
I haven't owned a Galaxy S series phone before the SkyRocket, so I can't compare. I will, however, say that the sound quality out of the SkyRocket is... mediocre at best and pretty bad at worst. That said, if I want ideal sound quality why would I be using a 3.5mm stereo jack? I'll be using digital signals to get it as close to the amp as I can, and that means bypassing all of the parts of this device that are less than stellar.
Bluetooth, in this case, is what we want. A Google search for A2DP enabled bluetooth stereo adapters turns up plenty of options for those that want to go that route.
Sure the SkyRocket could have used better components. But seriously, why complain? For casual listening it is more than enough, and for premium listening I wouldn't touch a 3.5mm stereo jack if you paid me.
ADDITION: You can also give the audio output quality over MHL/HDMI a try. Not sure what pathways that goes through, but it may provide better quality than the stereo-mini jack.

This is a headphone question, doesnt really have anything to do with your phone.
'Klipsch image s4' are probably the highest recommended headphones i've seen.
Basically every audiophile forum recommends them as a best bang for your buck option.
http://www.amazon.ca/Klipsch-IMAGE-S4-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B001V9LPT4
I also recommend disabling beats audio while using them.
You should also try to use flac audio formats or at worst 320kbps mp3's.
flac is compressed but lossless audio, like a digital version of a cd.
if you want to play with flac, you are most likely going to need to buy power amp, for $5.

Dont go mainstream brands like Bose, Beats, etc. You're just wasting your money to be honest. Ima recommend the V-Moda Crossfade LPs as they are closed-back(Great isolation), sexy as hell(seriously check em out), competitively priced($110-150) and most importantly, sound incredible.

The mic is detachable as well so thats always a plus. It comes with two cables. One with volumes controls and another with a mic. Def check it out if you get a chance.
AND remember to use Poweramp with SRS enhancements when you listen to music. The 'Beats' audio is just a gimmick and marketing ploy. Doesnt bring anything but muddy bass to the table.

Sorry but I just laugh when I see people using giant headphones outdoors. I just feel like sneaking up on you and seeing how I long I can walk right behind you before you notice.

Anyone know of any good earbuds under $50? the last time i spent money on headphones over $100 i ended up regretting it lol.
i'm no audiophile so i'm not loyal to any brands or anything. just as long as they sound decent.
NEVER get BEATS or BOSE. Both companies are like apple. Good marketing bad product. Also with the one x you have the option to use srs sound with poweramp. Use that. It's way better than beats enhancement and the sound is far better and sweeter.
I recommend the vmoda vibrato $130 (cheaper on ebay) They are built like tanks and are loved by the audiophile bass heads. They don't vibrate, but they have some of the best bass you can find in an earphone.
http://www.amazon.com/Vibrato-Noise...&qid=1340573332&sr=8-1&keywords=vmoda+vibrato
the klipsch s4i $70 (cheaper on ebay)
or the monster miles davis trumpets $270, if you have the money.
For under $50 you are best off with the klipsch s4.
bose headphones are completely overpriced garbage, the same as all there other products.
bose products tend to lack range and be VERY expensive, DO NOT EVER BUY BOSE.
Beats headphones tend to be overpriced garbage.
If you can get some monster turbine pro's for a really good price, then go for it.
I got monster turbine pro's for $130.

Audio out quality

Hi all
Ordered my 32gb, white N5, which should be delivered early next week.
But while anxiously waiting and reading first feedbacks, I had a question that seemed to have not been answered yet.
What about audio jack quality? I don't expect a smartphone to drive a high spec earbud like a professional DAC, but the N4 was a bit disappointing. Muddy bass, irritating highs, it was definitely not enough for my Fidelio S2.
So what to expect from the N5? Does it come with a Wolfson DAC (I don't think so) or with the same DAC the G2 is equipped with? How does it sound?
i would imagine it uses a Qualcomm dac like the N4 before it only perhaps an updated one. i found the N4 to sound alright on my Sure SE535's but bass not as clear / punchy as any wolfson ive had previously.
if you goto the snapdragon S800 page if i recall it does talk about the DAC
Also the S800 now has a Dedicated DSP processor and 4.4 uses direct audio tunneling to the DSP so it will be interesting to see how this will effect the audio quality to.
EDIT: from what i understand tho the Qualcomm DAC's are more analytical in sound they tend to give detail and lack warmth in the sound.
How is the volume? I'm hearing impaired and I was always listening my music on full volume.
I read somewhere that the N5 would be louder. Can someone confirm this for me?
audio is a big one for me as well.
if it isnt a big improvement over the n4 it will be getting sold. Ive been spoiled with my htc one after having the n4.

yeah, I used to listen my music on my ipod touch 64GB but it broke down. Just recently I started using my N4 as my daily music-"machine" D) and google music all access is great. However, the N4 was just not loud enough for some albums (usually older and quieter stuff) and 16GB weren't much enough.
I hope my new N5 white 32GB will be better as music player... I will find out at the latest on monday..
Just pasting my comment from a discussion on G+, some may find it useful:
From a quick test I believe it sounds better than my good ol' Nexus 4. The sound is a bit more bass-y, though I'm not sure if it's just "coloured", or the fact that Nexus 4's sound is a bit on the "tinny" side (note: I'm not using audiophile-grade gear, just slightly(?)-above-the-average Klipsch S4 in-ears). I'd say the sound is more balanced now. Also, output appears to be higher than on the Nexus 4.
Take the above with a grain of salt, this is a matter of personal preference after all. For proper analysis you should wait for Supercurio or someone with the proper tools + time to do it.
Edit: Before anyone asks about external DACs, just tried to connect my ODAC hoping for some sound to play from my speakers. No luck. Not even with a Y-Cable so I guess we're going to have to rely on custom kernels again.

Thanks!
With higher output, do you mean more volume, louder?
I also have Klipsch S4 (II) and I found it already quite (too?) bassy on my N4

Got the S4 (I), not sure if there's a difference!
Yep, that's what I meant about the output, sorry for the confusion.
Indeed. I hope the audio is better than the n4. Heck, my i9100 has better audio quality than the n4.

I'm coming from a GNexus and when I plug my phone into the aux jack in my car it sounds absolutely terrible. It's just horribly muffled and muddy compared to virtually anything else I've plugged in.
Anyone know what kind of improvements I can expect? Was the N4 any better than the GNexus? It's pretty embarrassing to want to share a song with friends and after someone unplugs their iphone my phone sounds like garbage.

Nope nooope no no no no no nopity nope no no no. I'm sorry but having owned both Galaxy S2 and Nexus 4, the Nexus 4 definitely has better music-playing quality through headphones. 100%.
Will receive my Nexus 5 hopefully Monday!
Hopefully the audio quality can compete with a Samsung Galaxy S3 + Boeffla Sound Engine. I´ll really miss this one

Verdict on Nexus 5 audio quality?

Now that the Nexus 5 has been out for a while now, and should have went through multiple iterations of hardware revisions, what is the verdict on the Nexus 5's audio quality? This is both speakerphone and headphone.
It is known that the Nexus 5 has really shoddy audio quality, especially from the headphone port. See here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7567/smartphone-audio-quality-testing/4
For me, this is really important, as I'm an audiophile, and I need to have excellent sounding audio. I'm on a Galaxy Note 3, but considering coming to the Nexus 5 as I've really had it with the ridiculous random reboots with the Note 3.
I'd really like to get some input from people who can contribute subjectively as well as those who might have tested it like Anandtech did.
Thanks in advance!
The speaker is okay, nothing to write home about but not terrible. I'd say it's better than the Nexus 4 but certainly not as good as the HTC One M7/M8. The headphone jack is awful. I'm not quite an "audiophile" but the sound is not good. It's still listenable, but it's a significant step down from the HTC One M7 or Galaxy S3 I've used in the past. It's actually to the point where I would rather listen to music over bluetooth than use my headphones because the quality drop over bluetooth isn't as significant as the difference in DAC quality between the N5 and my bluetooth receiver.
All in all, audio quality is probably the one thing that makes me regret the phone. If you plan on using headphones with the phone a lot, and don't want to deal with a USB DAC (including the issues getting it working on the Nexus 5) I would avoid the phone. I wish I had waited and picked up an HTC One M8 honestly, and that would be my recommendation. Now that they've dropped the "Beats" branding the audio quality is actually very good without the overpowering bass of the original M7.
Thanks so much for the in-depth explanation. I guess that takes me out of the running for a Nexus 5.

I use Poweramp & Flac files on my N5 & klipsch headphones, while ok it's by no means great.
You have the Note 3 atm, the N5 is no where near as good audio wise.
I had the N3 & tried the S5 both are way better than the N5.
Atm I use the M8 for proper audio quality.
It's your choice, the N5 is a great device but not for music.
I use beats headphones and Viper4android, along with poweramp and flac as stated above and I have pretty good sound. Not nearly as sweet as the M7 was but definitely above average. I think a combination of good after market headphones and a reliable audio mod can make a so-so sound situation much better. If you have the means and sound is important, then you may want a different device. But if you don't or already have the N5, there are ways to improve the sound significantly. That's my penny and a half.
Mine sounds great using Poweramp and some Klipsch earphones
Honestly, the sound is definitely sub par. I get it, it's a $349-$399 phone & corners are cut somewhere. I have been to see bands play & my siblings & friends with different phones record bands & clips & their playback makes my n5 look like garbage. (They have note3, m7, iPhone 4s/5/5s). Headphone jack isn't awesome either.
I stream music a lot in my car using an auxiliary wire & it isn't awesome, but it isn't atrocious either.
Sound & battery are really killing me with this device.

There have been no hardware revisions at this time so everything is the same as when Anandtech did their tests, and no one tests like Anand does so you've already read the best info out on the subject.
I think the audio quality is above average for a mobile device, but isn't in the same league as the hardware used for the high end Samsung or HTC phones. Software mods such as Viper4Android can make up most of that difference.
The only real issue with the external audio is the stereo crosstalk in the upper volume steps which I've not needed to use as it's plenty loud for my ears.
Came from an S4, and expected to be disappointed by the audio quality of the N5, but I wasn't. The speaker does suck though. N5 + faux sound + Sony MDR-1R headphones = not too shabby an experience (prefer it to the S4).

24bit/192kHz DAC

Just wanted to share what I feel is a great addition to the OP6 or other phones lacking a proper DAC. When I orderd my OP6 I didn't expect to like it as much as I do and had myself convinced I would probably be sending it back. To my surprise I actually love the device except for the overall size ( still have and prefer my 5" Pixel in this regard) and the headphone audio quality. While it was nice enough for OP to include the headphone jack, what comes out is pretty much garbage. I held on to my LG V20 for so long just for the DAC. Well I decided to take a chance and order a USB-C hi-res 24bit/192kHz DAC. The difference is nothing short of amazing when switching between the 2 outputs during the same song. While the total max volume is higher than the OP analog jack I don't feel it's as loud as the V20 but I'm relying on memory since I sold it a few months back. I am testing with power hungry Sennheiser HD 6xx phones. AT $69 it's not cheap but I fell the price is well worth it if you value hi-res sound. You do have to toggle the OTG quick setting after plugging in. Just search Audiolab Portable Headphone Amplifier Audio Powered USB DAC but I'm sure there are others.

The dac included in the op6 is actually very decent, it is a qualcomm WCD9341 which supports up to pcm 384khz/32bit playback, 130db dynamic range and -109db of harmonic distortion. Honestly checks all the boxes for a decent dac -the v20's spec wise wasn't capable of a whole lot more. However the amplifier is weak, and with high impedance headphones the op6 won't perform well. With a low impedance pair of cans (which most are), the sound quality is very decent, and I am actually impressed. Coming from a v20 as well. Unless your driving some power hungry headphones I don't see why one would need this. Still, a pretty neat find though for those who need the extra voltage!
I have no issue with 3.5 audio jack and never had.
If oneplus decided to go in retarded way not to included audio jack in their next phone than it is going to be a HUGE deal breaker for me.
Maybe you have garbage headphones, try to get some with good quality.

or is it xda insane(against freedom of speech) censorship again ?
yeah, this is what you get when publicity in private ownership.
I am planning to buy the Sennheiser HD598 to go along with my OP6, but seeing the audio output I was planning to buy an external amp/DAC combo. Seeing here I'm wondering if I should just buy an amp instead of the DAC/amp combo as it will be significantly much cheaper. Let me know which is better - just an amp or an amp/DAC combo?

Totally agree with Toastyp. Im with the most quality price headset in the market Koss Porta Pro, In addition with Neutron Player virtual DAC using cellphone chipset the hifi flac audio files sounds amazing. No need of external dac hardware like that one. Give it a try.

I'd say amplifier, but the HD598 is only 50ohm and try without at first, you might be happy without.
The Venture Electronics Odyssey is also a good USB-C DAC cable, works on OP6 with OTG, at just 20 bucks I'd say I do recommend it, not just for OP6, but also PCs and stuff. Using it also on my laptop with USB-A to USB-C and it works perfect.
The one plus 6 can't compete with the v series.
I seriously hope no one listens to the clowns stating that the one plus 6/t can compete with the v20 in quality. Do not listen to these people, they are either fanbois for one plus or they just don't know good, portable audio. Trust me, I have a one plus 6 and I had a v30. The v30 destroys the one plus 6t for music playback. I just couldn't stand the bad software on the LG V30. The one plus can't drive even mobile headphones properly. I miss LOADS of detail in my music, the volume is too low and because the headphones aren't being driven well they DON'T sound as good. I'm talking about mobile headphones here. I have an audio Technica msr7 and a Mitchell and Johnson GL1 and both sound terrible on the one plus 6t. The amp is weak and the DAC is ok. Consider yourself warned.

Yeah the stock sound on the OP6 headphone jack is not that great. It's just ok. I have a Soundblaster E5 that I use with my phone when I'm at home and it greatly increases the sound quality. I'm using Mitchell & Johnson JP1 headphones. They are only 32 Ohms, but they can reveal a mediocre DAC.
I'm not a hard core audiophile and I don't rely on my phone for my more serious audio listening, but I found the OP6 to be a step down in sound quality from my Nexus 6. V4A helps quite a bit, though. I'm curious to hear one of these DAC devices to see what kind of a difference it makes.

As in it's definately worth it's price, and even more. VE also produces Monk+ headphones that everyone knows about probably, and their sites do look bad and stuff, but the stuff they make is the real deal.
It's better than my laptop Legion Y530 and the OP6 with driving my AudioTechnica M-30X, has more power and is brighter than the headphone jack of OP6 I'd say. It's not a HIDIZS Sonata level of power or stuff but neither is the price
If you want real USB DAC, go for Dragonfly Black, for only 100 bucks.

Oke, that's some great points you making! I never heard of monk so this brand is all new to me so maybe that's why I was taking it seriously. I'll try to order 1 also after I repair my oneplus 6. SD845 DAC can handle 32b/382kHz and has native support for DSD64 and DSD128. I'm playing 24b/192kHz and DSD128 albums with no issue at all. Quad DAC or not. Before you start screaming "Fanboi", you may want want to get off that high horse and look in the mirror. No problem pushing my WH900N headphones at all. Maybe you need to research a bit deeper get an app capable of using all the features of the OnePlus 6/6T. Oh, and buy better headphones.

I tested a USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone jack dongle and it doesn't work on the OnePlus 6 though it did on the 5T. Afaik these dongles even with a DAC don't work on the 6? Anyone else can confirm this or did it work for you?
Offered a Poco F1 to my wife 2 weeks ago. For fun i connected my favourites earphones KZ ZSR.
Surprise.
The F1 has much more punch than even Viper4 on my OP6.....
In fact, my old Oppo Find 7, just from box is better than than this OP6...and even with Viper4Sound, i notice some lack of strength on some details and a little "decontrol" ...
Camera and sound are the weaks points of OP6.
