[Q] PA 2.54 / kernel / best battery life - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Just curious if anyone would have some insight on which kernel I should pair up with PA 2.54 (hopefully 3.5 + halo gets ported soon ).
I'm probably going to flash rohan.kernel.b7 but I know that aznrice2k4 gets amazing battery life out of his kernel 143 (how about batt life on 150?) on Xylon. Also, it was noted in the Xylon thread that the kernel works on a couple other aosp roms so I would assume it will work with PA.
Thanks in advance!

Test and measure results yourself. All phones and preferences are not created equally.

Yeah I know I know... This post is irrelevant anywho, PA would just bootloop haha (s-off, wiped etc. I did it right ). On to the next one!
Thanks though!

IIRC, you would have to use b5 or b6 because of some changes made to cm in november. I don't blame ya, I loved PA.

Yeah hopefully 3+ gets ported soon halo is shweet. My gf wanted a new phone and I told her to get the Nexus 4. Why? Why? I just torture myself everytime I look at all the ports / roms / HALO etc. that they have for it. Not knocking our devs just jealous of the N4

[Q] Help choosing ICS ROM for Skyrocket

Hello all,
Wondering if you guys can help me decide whether to flash an ICS ROM or not?
I have my Skyrocket tweaked and set up perfectly. It contains...
Version: 2.3.5 (refuse to upgrade to 2.3.6 due to many issues I see some are having)
Kernel: 2.6.35.11+ (excellent "stock-ish" ROM from romracer)
Launcher: Go Launcher EX
Phone is rooted and like to use CWM.
With that said, I'm wondering what is the best option to try? My main concern is obviously performance and battery life. I have spectacular battery life right now and don't want to lose it by flashing an ICS ROM.
Perhaps something that will work with the romracer kernel? For example, something that would still allow me to use CWM and MUST also support boot animations and BLN support. That is a must for me, as I use it to tweak my battery life quite a bit.
Anyways,
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

If you decide that you can live without the BLN and overclocking then make a nandroid and give smooth ice a try, skyics is also good I hear.
I've tried smooth ice for like a month almost and it is really stable and the battery was good too.

If you do not have the heart for glitches, ICS may not serve you well. There is no real benefit that I can see unless you are a hardcore phone tweaker. I am always debating whether to just go back to stock GB myself !!!
BUT if you really have the itch, the safest is mhx's full bloat stock. I used that for a long time, and it is very - relatively- stable.
here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498&highlight=full+bloat
My 4 cents....
Close eyes. Now say eni mini miny Moe! Just flash them all. U could use the experience and see everyone's roms instead of asking.... hrllo

you gotta wait till kernel source is released before you'll have bln and oc but maybe try smooth ice if you want touchwiz but id try cm7 if you haven't or cm9 its all alpha buy lots have used it as a daily driver... I just hate touchwiz
CM9 Skyrocket
Thanks...
Thank you all for the feedback.
This is what I though! lol
I will stick with GB for now. I get amazing battery life, is extremely stable and love all the extra features after tweaking.
Was just curious....
Thanks again,

Battery Life & Stability
Thanks to the OP for this thread. I'm in a similar boat, but am just looking for the most stable custom ROM with the longest battery life. Coming from rooted Gingerbread, I've setup my ICS exactly the same (debloated and lean), and my time between charges was cut by 1/3 at least.
From my limited research, the CM9 Beta 1 ROM sounds to have excellent battery life and great stability. However, I'm open to suggestions! One question I have though, is I keep hearing folks talk about "nightlies". That that mean it requires nightly updating? Thanks in advance.
I've been using PTSD's AOKP ICS ROM and I love it. I've mixed that with InstigatorX's Kernel and my battery life is amazing. I'm an Android noob, but I'm digging this setup.

the word nightly means that it's scheduled to auto build a new version with any fixes made during the day... It wont auto update your Rom though you have to manually install it
It is a very easy process though. you download the new nightly and reboot to recovery: wipe system and wipe cache then install, wipe dalvik and fix permissions and reboot if you installed any mods like inverted apps or gps fix or dpi changes they need to also be addresses after the first boot
Because i don't like setting it up all the time i just install the new nightly weekly
CM9 Skyrocket
I actually *just* restored to Gingerbread today, after months of using Cyanogenmod 9's official and nightly releases, as well as the InstigatorX kernels.
My battery life was okay, but for all the extra bells and whistles, they seem to get the basics wrong, unfortunately :/ I still couldn't send texts larger than 160 characters without splitting them up, and they'd always arrive out of order, or not at all. Other apps wouldn't behave properly either, and my mobile network connection seemed to change/drop just from looking at it.
So CM9 looked promising, but still has a ways to go, and it's rated as one of the better ROMs for this phone. I didn't even want to try CM10, because their bug list is still bigger than CM9.
Can I ask where you got your romracer kernel? I'll have to give that a try. Also I'm looking to replace the current radio with something better.
I had to rebuild from scratch because somehow my gingerbread backup was corrupted. I used Bonestocketeer's ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357274 ) and the only issue I've had with it is I can't change the LTE/HSPA/GSM setting in Mobile Networks to just HSPA/GSM. I was able to with my original ROM, and that seemed to help battery life.
Thanks again for your post!

At least tell him why. You report hounds are all the same.
To OP, james has reported you because the title and nature of this thread suggests asking which rom is the best, which is prohibited in this forum because "which x is best" threads can usually promote flaming and whatnot. It's like asking who likes the Yankees, and then fans of other teams riot about how their team is the best.
This comes as a surprise as I see you've been a member for a while. Assuming that other forums have similar rules to the SR forum.

My recommendation would be NexusMod, then. It features the proprietary performance tweaks available in the TouchWiz ROMs, so it's faster than Cyanogenmod, but it has a lot of theming that makes it look and feel closer to AOSP. There are still some ugly elements of TouchWiz that exist, but it's a big improvement over a lot of the other TouchWiz-based ROMs.
For sure, CM9 has more features and tweaking options, and a more consistent AOSP look to it, but it's slower than NexusMod and still has some very minor bugs. It does, perhaps, offer you a few more options in how to save battery, though.
I have to say, though ICS is a massive improvement over GB and we have stable, mature ICS ROMs available. I would strongly advise upgrading, but if you're concerned about bugs, stick with a light TW-based rom like NexusMod.

[Poll] What Are You Running?

Hello all,
Hopefully making a poll like this isn't against forum rules. I'm just trying to gauge what ROM's people are running on their Verizon Galaxy S IIIs.
Vote away, and if you pick 'Other,' please make a note of what it is you are running in a post.
Thanks for voting!

Edit: Just realized I forgot ParanoidAndroid hybrid JB ROM. I don't believe I can edit the poll in any way to add that option. Sorry about that. I would say throw that under Other (JB).

I'm still on Synergy 1.3. I just went down into town today (I live in the sticks) and **** me if they don't have 4g there now! Awesome. Except the god damn phone kept dropping back to 3g. Seemed to do it every time the screen turned off. I took the opportunity, using 4g to download the latest Beans and Synergy ROMs but, that ****ing 4g drop had me pretty pissed off and I don't think I'll bother doing it. Revert the phone back to stock and send it on its way.

Get rolling fast with a new phone? Yes.
Since I don't have time to monkey with stuff, I jump on whatever bandwagon has the most use and support (thanks to all the people who DO have time to monkey with stuff). Accordingly, I got my subsidized upgrade from VZW yesterday in the form of an S3.
I'd been running an OG Incredible on CM7. Zero problems, worked when I needed it.
I got home, rooted using this fast, simple method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342
Loaded up CWM Rom Manager and flashed Synergy v1.6 before doing anything to the phone other than having it activated by the gal at the VZW store.
Have all my apps installed and Ti backed up. Have my IMAP email running. No issues and the battery was great today. Now to start using it.
Likely I'll go back to CM once official and stable, but this seems a good stopgap.

First of all glad to be back.
With a new phone was at
my ends with the Thunderbolt
and lack of updates from the
big red. So I feel sort of a trader
leaving HTC to Samsung. I want
to say Samsung rocks!
Very happy with the S3 and running on
synergy 1.7 had run the IMO v0 beta
worked gr8.
Only cons for me on IMO's kernel
when the phone is off and would charge via wall charger it would vibrate every few seconds and never charge more than 80% range. If I left the phone on and charged via wall would not do this
When you restart the phone from cold start will go through a series of 3 reboots before coming to the main screen sometimes it would end up in the recovery menu, I also wiped cache, dalvik three times before flashing.
Love IMO's kernels they rock but the mult reboots for me has kept me
on the stock with SynergysROM 1.7
Cheers,

CM7 or CM9/CM10

After playing with CM9 and CM10 for the past six months, I decided to flash back to CM 7.2 with the datadata fix and latest CM7 glitch kernel.
Results?
CM 7.2 makes my captivate feel like a new phone. It makes me wonder if Samsung was right, maybe our little cappy isn't powerful enough to handle above GB?
Has anyone else had similar results?
for me in JB (and the reason I flashed back) everything was laggy in every version of CM9, and CM10. Overclocking and installing faster kernels helped, but it STILL always felt lagged.
JB was really bringing me down, made me want to throw my phone out the window while waiting for Google Now to load.
Now, with 7.2 back on there my phone is snappy, google (which is WAY less complex) is snappy.
So after using it for a day here's some things I forgot about:
1) power saving features work correctly meaning ill have better battery life on cm 7. I tried having wifi shut off automatically in cm9/10 and it never automatically turned back on.
2) home and messaging are resident in memory. You have to flash additional add one in the newest version to get this feature.
3)faster app performance. Everything but scrolling is faster.apps open faster, games respond faster, touches aren't delayed. In cm9/10 I could text faster than my phone could display on screen. Not with cm7.
Do I miss the smoothness of butter and the slick ice interface?
Absolutely. It is a trade off.
Cm7 was good you can do a lot more but cm9 I really don't like love aokp tho I use that a lot but the only issues I have is when on Facebook or games my phone starts to heat up

Definately better than I was getting with cm9 or cm10.
don't recall stock froyo battery life being great. I haven't been on stock since last October.

yeah, like I said in the other thread, your mileage may vary. My phone has never made it through a day on a single charge, even on the stock rom froyo. now it's down to half a day.
That wasn't the only issue I was having with ICS/JB roms. in CM10 it would take literally almost 2 minutes for Google Now to load up. When messaging with SMS pop up, or the stock messaging App, the characters were ALWAYS about 15 seconds behind. Sometimes to the point of making me wonder if it was responding.
Some of this stuff is probably better in Slimbean, because they have trimmed the system and therefore trimmed RAM usage down to the bare essentials.
I have a captivate and my GF has a GSM Nexus S. The specs for the two phones are identical the Nexus S is just newer with a front facing camera and a flash.
She has gotten the stock update to Jelly Bean OTA. so that should show that our phone does have the hardware to support at least ICS. I am using the stable CM9. I can agree with you on the battery thing, but I bought a Samsung OEM 1800 mah battery that was meant for another phone (s2 i think), but still fits tightly. with the new battery my CM9 runs at least one day, sometimes maybe 2 with light usage.
Your post inspired me to try CM7 just for fun. So I reinstalled my old nandroid from january, and installed the latest nightly and glitch kernel, and I am amazed by the speed and fluidness. Project butter? This is much closer. Everything is super speedy, and all of my apps updated extremely fast. I really wonder what happened to all of the features that CM7 contained under the CM settings, but I suppose they were removed in order to save space. It's all great except I'm almost disgusted by the look of the UI after being on beautiful 4.0+ since november. I know I won't be able to use this for very long.

Try the GlaSSMIX theme, with the Holo ICS launcher.
It is interesting that they dropped so many features from CM9 that were in CM7.1 and 7.2.
hshaikh;
Perhaps I miss spoke; The phone is _capable_ of running the latest Android OS. In much the same way you could run Windows 7 on the lowest spec machine listed on the back of the box. But you'll get a much better experience running Windows XP on that PC, in much the same way, Gingerbread CM7 + Glitch runs better on the cappy.
Java is a resource hungry beast, and with the polish and UI improvement require more of both. FUNCTIONALLY there is not a whole lot of improvements between GB and ICS. JB adds more polish to the notification system, and Google Now.
Alright, this thread inspired me as well and few days ago i decided to flash CM7 from CM10 nightlies which i've never been before since i got this phone lol i just went straight to CM9. All i can say about CM7 in the cappy is O.M.G what a change so i decided to make it a keeper, how? well changing the UI what else lol so ok i took the plunge and made a Phone version of my RibbonICS tablet theme for CM7 together with ZduneX25 ICS layout patch and gee i'm proud of the result i'm loving it.

Note: I will be releasing a slim CM7 ROM with the patches and the theme in few days, The font in the screenshoots is Comfortaa but i'll add roboto fonts to the ROM once i'm done with the theme.

I missed this comment before, unrelated to CM7/9/10.
NEVER use the Facebook or Twitter app. Both stock apps are garbage. Unfortunately there is no good Facebook replacement, I've come to like Plume for Twitter, and until Slices hooks into system sharing is my goto app.
For Facebook just make a shortcut on your launcher to the mobile website. It looks EXACTLY like that app and functions faster.

Hey Guys,
I was trying to do the exact same thing like the original poster but I'm getting installation aborted. Currently I have Slimbean 4.1 on my device and the CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4.
I did the following steps:

- Wipe Cache
- Install zip from sdcard and chose the cm7 file (stable). It goes through and then just gives me a Installation aborted. Do I need to have an older version of CWM perhaps? Any help here how you guys downgraded back to cm7?
Thanks.

Every time I go from a datadata to a no datadata ROM I flash the kernel first then reboot recovery and proceed. Example : DOCS v12 (ICS) boot into recovery flash JB devil or any other JB kernel then reboot recovery and install JB ROM. Vice versa if I'm going from JB to ICS, I experience no boot loops with that method just make sure you DONT reboot phone in recovery AFTER installing the kernel then ICS ROM with JB kernel wouldn't be a good idea.

[Q] Stability of CM10?

I was running CM10 back in the day when it was not yet officially hosted by the CM team and I I went back to stock since there were a couple issues with the video recorder and other things. I see now that CM10 is officially being hosted by the CM team but they are still nightly, but I still would like to give it another go around. I was just wondering if there what are the major issues with the ROM right now (if any)?
The first posts don't really tell much except "it's a major work in progress" and the official change log might as well be gibberish to me, and I'm definitely not about to go through all 500+ pages, so if someone would give me a brief summary of what is/isn't working it would be much appreciated!

Its definitely daily driver ready. Just some wake locks making it not have as good battery life as sense. But everything else works great. The build bot has been broken since 10/12 so when the next official nightly comes out, it should have a bunch of new things... Maybe new kernel?

Its definitely daily driver ready. Just some wake locks making it not have as good battery life as sense. But everything else works great. The build bot has been broken since 10/12 so when the next official nightly comes out, it should have a bunch of new things... Maybe new kernel?

Sweet, I might just have to flash it again since I usually have a charger handy with me so battery life isn't a huge a concern. I'm sort of confused by what you mean about the next official nightly... I thought nightlys were released every... well night?

The night lies have been down because some changes were made to the code upstream that causes the Evita build to fail. They're working on the kernel fixes to get the night lies to compile again but apparently its very involved.

There was an experimental one posted today
my wifi doesn't crap out on the experimental nightly which was my only issue with 10/12
One should always read at min the last 10 pages of a thread of a Rom you might flash, an really it's expected of anyone.

Just a heads up dont know if anyone else is having this problem.
I rooted my 2.2 with the new 2.2 root instructions and downloaded the latest (10/25:experimental[cm-10-20121025-EXPERIMENTAL-evita.zip ]) cm10 build, everything works great, even wifi, except MOBILE data. I'm on straight talk, and man im getting slow speeds, nothing changed to APN, i think its a radio problem. anyone got any suggestions? I attached the radio link, which radio should i flash?

[Q] Stability of roms for the g2x

Hi, I have a wind mobile lg-p999dw (T-Mobile G2x)
I wanted to know that since official updates never came out for the g2x cyanogenmod and other roms were created.
Since it was an abandoned phone, developers put this phone in their priority list.
CM7 was very successful and it went all the way to a fully stable version of CM 7.2.
Ever since CM9 came out these teams lost hope.
Cyanogenmod, Eaglesblood, Hellfire, Paranoid Android, ...
When jellybean came out CM 9 for the G2x was abandoned at an early stage and development of CM 10 started.
My question is why, WHY WHY WHY hasn't a perfectly stable version of a jellybean rom for g2x not come out that is perfectly as stable like CM 7.2 while other phones like htc one x and samsung galaxy s iii that already get official updates and get the stable version of the rom?
Different reasons for different ROMs.
For some older ones there wasn't HWA, but a hacked together version that still wasn't perfect and things like the camera had issues.
For newer ones the only major problem seems to be that the radio just isn't working.
It came down to LG not releasing drivers/code. People could hack together some things, but that could only get us so far. LG did a lot of weird things with their code, I believe.
At least, in my lurking and search, that's how I understand it. I'd love to see a fully working jellybean rom for the G2x since my girlfriend got it from me as a hand me down.
Take a look through adampk's CM10.1 thread in the development section and it's User Thread here in the general section. You'll get a good view at what's not working and what everyone has tried. Maybe you can even help out.

You have to understand that most of CM9 and CM10 builds right now are based on a deprecated kernel and a modified android framework, known as "hackfest", which lacks many functions needed in the newer OSes. If you try Adampk's build 6 with, optionally, my kernel, you will see that it is really stable and works well, but not the radio. This is being worked on actively.
Most of the teams you specified simply switched to a newer model, not because of a compatibility issue. Cyanogen left us because our phone maintainer, RC, couldn't fix the radio. If he did release it anyways he would've received a lot of complains, which he didn't want.
Why why why... Wah wah wah..

Do a search for baseband.zip, or look in these topics, there should be links in them.

WOW that worked great! Thank you very much. Do you know if there is a solutions for the bluetooth not connecting or no audio on bluetooth?
Downgrading your baseband to 2.3.3 is only known way to get working audio for Bluetooth calling at the moment

LOL yeah I guess you could do that too. I'm just way too much of a tweaker/modder/flashcrazy to keep a stock phone!

Based on experience, it is generally not a good idea to mess with your wife's phone . LOL.
