[Q] YouTube app doesn't work anymore after CM9 update - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I recently flashed the CM9 20130227 to update my old version of CM9 that was about a year old. But after I flashed it I couldn't play any videos. Either from YouTube app or the phone's player or any player. Videos just won't play. I did a re-install and tried to go back to my old ROM but the problem's still there.
Everything was working before I flashed the update. Any video playback gives me an error message "Sorry, this video cannot be played."

flash proton kernel

No dont flash the proton kernel. Flash hefe. Or the rom from aug 30th. Cm9 last one released in 2012. Proton kernel is what broke video

Flashing CM 9.1 and then flashing the Proton Kernel fixes the YouTube problem.

You Tube worked great for me with the hefe kernal.

Yeah... just about any non-CM9.1-release kernel works great. I was merely pointing out that turtlepa saying that the Proton kernel was the problem, was totally off base and wrong.

Theraze u even stated yourself to someones question how to fix youtube and video recording. Ask in qa or flash another kernel. 9.1 comes with proton so.. another kernel must mean hefe
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2

I run Ultragen 1.01, and the proton kernel, both in my sig and youtube, recorded video in 720p plays back fine, netflix works fine, everything works great. Youtube was borked in ultragen 1.0 as well as some video, so make sure to get 1.01, reboot, let it sit, flash proton, video in full smoothness. If it doesn't, its your phone.

Uh... no. The flashable Proton/Poop kernels come from Erik. CM9.1 came from Brian.
The flashable Proton/Poop kernels work with Youtube/Video/stuff. The CM9.1 version does not.
These are differences. That means that they're not the same.
While it's sad that your personal experience doesn't match the rest of the world, that doesn't invalidate the rest of reality.

Is that maybe a user thing? cause i actually just flashed in cm9.1 then up to ultragen 1.01 like 2 days ago and i have no problem at all with youtube, loads up and plays videos just fine unless theres something wrong im not seeing

The problem noted in this thread is specific to the CM9.1.0 build from Feb 27, 2013. The version of the kernel included with that had some major issues, fixed by flashing... anything that's not that specific kernel version.
Ultragen 1.0 had some issues as well, but if you flashed 1.01 instead (or over it), those original Ultragen issues should be solved.

OR, Maybe Aries

Well, if they're grabbing one of the publicly available CM9 versions with Aries+SOD, extracting the boot.img file and flashing it over to their phone... Youtube not playing is the least of concerns.
And if they're compiling their own post-noiphone-SOD-fixed kernels, they probably have better things to do than complain here, like go onto the IRC channel and discuss with other developers how to actually fix it.

[ROM] [NIGHTLY] CM7 on the G2x. *Take 2*

Important!
It is strongly recommended that you flash clockwork recovery via NVFlash. If for some reason this or a future nightly build causes your phone to not boot up, you will not be able to boot into recovery unless you have it flashed via NVFlash.
NVFlash for Linux
NVFlash for Windows
To clear up some confusion, if you flashed your recovery via ROM Manager, you didn't actually flash a recovery. It is what we call a fakeflash, you should still probably flash with NVFlash.
Instructions
Download from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p999 and flash like you would any other ROM (via recovery or ROM Manager).
Be sure to backup before flashing, and of course a wipe is necessary when coming from stock.
Gapps are available from the usual places, however do not download the version that says it is for Tegra, even though this is a tegra device, as it will not flash.

After skimming some of the posts in this thread, here are some things that you can expect.
What to expect
- Everything working including Wifi, GPS, Audio, Camera, Front Facing Camera
- Screen off animation is not enabled, therefore it isn't broken.
- Occasional audio problems (as far as I know they have not been fixed). If audio does not play just reboot.
- Automagical brightness weridness, this is controlled by the kernel and not userspace, even having it working is very hacky.

I see this thread kinda senseless as there isn't a newer nightly that was available before using the old thread. Although 2 pages seems more manageable then 300+ (which will happen eventually to this thread.)
Being a website developer I know these threads add up pretty quickly (hurray xda!)
I haven't flashed an actual CM rom in almost a week since the server crash. Hopefully the new thread is a sign that the server was repaired and new nightlies are on the way. Using the latest KANGS to get my fix, I know there is lots of progress. Running the latest KANG from today I think the rom is almost ready for a stable release after a few bugs get worked out.
I think the work you guys are doing is fantastic and much appriciated, although it may seem all we do is ***** half the time. Android wouldn't be the same without all of the developers leading the way. Big props. Hope all is well and I plan to continue to follow your work.

[Q] ICS Camera and changing kernal in superlite-5.1

Hey guys,
I am new to all of this but managed to successfully flashed the superlite-5.1 rom to my Rogers Galaxy S2. Big thank you to mhx (I tried donating but your paypal wouldn't accept because in not in the US)
The Rom is working fine but there are a couple of features that it doesn't contain that interest me.
1. The camera app - Is it possible to have the same camera that's available on the stock ICS (with the live video effects...)
2. Can I flash romracers kernal with this rom? I only want to do this for bln support. Is there another way I can get bln?
Sorry if my question sounds dumb, I have spent the last couple days reading through the forum trying to educate myself with the android dev.
Thank's for all your help

AOSP camera is available, check the aosp apps thread, and as xcrazy said, no bln til we get source. And yes u can of course use romracer kernel with mhx, i thought that was the default one anyway. If its not mhx is using mohan_kr's, which for your purposes is identical, no real point in switching

romracers unsecure ics kernel is fine to flash, but if hes using superlite, he is already using that kernel.

That's just an ICS themed camera. You can try Camera ICS+ on play store. Still needs work though but it does have the video effects.

[Q] Confused about installing ICS ROM into an existing GB ROM

It has been a long day of researching on unlocking my aunts SGH-T959W . I have finally finished rooting the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956025
My phone has the following status atm:
Firmware:2.3.6
Build no.: Gingerbread.WUQL86
kernel: 2.6.35.7-blastoff-v2
Blastoff does not detect any network signal, and hence I have to install another ROM
However, I am having a bit problem making a decision which ROM to install, since this is not even my phone and I am not sure.I was looking at this list http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/List_of_ROMs
Basically I just want a stable ROM for her phone, and something fast.
One thing particularly confusing is, how can I install ICS kernels into a Gingerbread ROM, that is just not compatible. And if you guys can provide links that would be useful, THANKS !
With blast off kernel you can flash any ics or jb roms. Ics is solid except for wifi calling and the battery won't go for days...maybe one day. Jb needs some work still gps doesn't work and wifi is broke on 4.2.2. If you're after something stable and wifi calling isn't a deal breaker go with any ics and proton kernel. O and the latest cm9 has broken video but proton kernel fixes it.
I can vouch for CM9 with the Proton kernel. Ultragen is supposed to be good too. If the JB ROMs haven't got GPS and WiFi working when I get The Urge, I'm trying that combo.
Btw, Google Voice works for WiFi calling. It doesn't show as the cell phone number at the recipient's phone tho.

Ahh I don't need gps xD.
There are some interface changes going from gb to ics I like. Valhalla Black and CM7 were the, two GB ROMs I used other than stock, and I liked them both for different reasons.
Usually I try a different ROM because the one I'm on flakes due to a bad app, sun spots or sumthin'. If I gotta wipe and reflash, I figure may as well try something new.
I miss swype and the office app from the stock ROMs, but I like the overall experience better with the custom ROMs.
From a security standpoint, you really have no idea if the devs can be trusted, but that's not to say SAMSUNG or Google are implicitly trustworthy either. Just saying... For that matter, having private info on a smart phone isn't probably the most secure idea either. You pick the risks you find acceptable.
One of those risks is taking on the tech support for a phone you don't own

It's probably because our wiki is outdated. Forgive us.
What matters is the version of cwm that you're using. Blastoff has 5.0.xx I forget which exact version is in the kernel. Anyway then you should be good to go. I'm not sure you still have to go to cm9 first. I think all our roms have the right stuff to take you from blastoff to wherever.

Lol, I am just trying to save my aunts 20$, and also I get to learn something new. what method do u usually do to change custom roms is it flashing from CWM or is there a software ?. I have been really careful regarding what i do to the phone since yesterday as it is not my phone, that is why I have been asking all possible questions before starting anything . I know unlocking and rooting are two different things , but in order to unlock you need to root.
Ok so I am flashing to CM9 now , after that should flash to a different ROM, like CM10 or should I just stick to CM9 or move to Ultragen. blastoff is a battery drainer, i got up this morning it went from 100% to 30% O_O

You'll be able to flash any MTD rom from any other MTD/BML rom. The problem will be going from MTD back to BML but you probably won't want to do that.
As was mentioned, you will need a kernel with CWM 5.x+. You can find the blastoff kernel if you go back a few pages in the development forum.
As for which ROM to install? I recommend Team Acid's AOKP (link in my signature) using the Proton ICS kernel (by beastmode). It's been a very stable combination for me.

what are the chances of me going back to BML rom, so once I upgrade to custom ICS based roms, I can flash different roms that are only related to ICS and JB, and not Gingerbread, since it a version behind? So if I went to CM9 , i can easily switch AOKP with proton ics kernel or ICBINB ?
Thanks FB , I followed your post for rooting it was really useful. Also I thought BML and MTD, are just file systems or type of mapping, why are they supported in kernel level and not ROM level?

Instructions:
There seems to be an odd permissions issue that we've uncovered. Follow these exact steps so when you boot you'll have working cell data:
Reboot Recovery
Clear Caches
Flash your current ROM
Flash kernel
Reboot
Profit!!!
I'm working on clearing this up. I've verified the above process against mastamoon's unofficial CM10.2 10/07 build.

A big thanks to shane269 for helping me test this from a bootlooper to working kernel!
Thanks!

* Merged the commit for touchscreen optimizations
* Cherry-picked commit for reverting portions of the touchscreen optimizations which may cause us camera issues.
* Changed updater-script to hopefully resolve issue with no data after flashing (still researching issue)
First?
Looking forward to this

ktoonsez gave the OK. Download link is now up. Please follow the instructions or you'll get no data. If you accidently goof and do this just reflash your ROM and then in the same session flash the kernel.
Thanks!
Mike
Thanks for this I've been using this without issues pacman ROM.

Just flashed on Slim 1.6 weekly and set my kernel settings. No initial issues, thanks for the update. I was going through kernel flashing withdrawals.

Is anyone not seeing OC working? I have mine set to 1728 but I'm still seeing 1510 in BBS.

I normally don't overclock my phone doesn't do well with it. I tried 1728 and it wasn't ever using it. Then I bumped it up to 1809 and it instantly rebooted. As expected, my processor just won't do it. After the reboot the phone was still set at 1728 and it was using that frequency. So maybe requires a reboot work?

Rebooting seems to make it stick or show up in the apps where I see freq values.

OP Updated
Went through my cherry pick branch and realized I missed some commits. I missed about 2 days worth of merges at the end of August. These are now all added.
There is a gerrit reviewed commit for touchscreen optimizations (and a subsequent fix for camera issues). I'm having trouble merging this commit into my branch. I'll try to get that into the build for tomorrow.
Thanks!
Mike
Can I ask why there is a unofficial version of KT kernel? Did he drop support for s3?
Followed instructions to the letter and re-attempted 2x and still getting no data when running this kernel. Running liquidsmooth 2.10 final release. Thanks!

He's just been really busy and this guy wanted to put a more recent build out since there have been many commits to cm 10.2

Are we able to flash the kernel separately yet?

Shoot! Ok. Just want to ask a couple of questions to make sure I'm on the same page and I can collect some info to try and figure this out.
10/10 build? Probably a silly question since you posted after I posted the new build, but just checking.
Are you using CWM? If you are what version?
Just to be clear, are you flashing ROM and then the kernel in the same recovery session?
I'm not familiar with liquidsmooth. Is the 2.10 release version 4.3 of Android? I'm assuming it is otherwise you probably would have gotten a bootloop instead of no data.
Thanks for the feedback. It's important that I see these. I've been worried sick that there are people downloading this, having this problem, and immediately thinking that I through out something that is bunk. I want this effort to live up to the expectations that everyone has for KT's kernel. Last thing I want to do is turn people off to his great work!

I was able to flash 10/10 over 10/09 without having to flash the ROM and still have data. I have not gone from sans KT to ROM with KT on the 10/10 build.
I'm going to try to get some input from some devs. I originally thought it was the updater-script applying the wrong permissions during the flash. I did, however, change the script to mimic more how LeanKernel does its flash but that fix was put in 10/09. This along with the touchscreen fixes are my top priorities to get fixed.
See responses below. Thanks!

Yep 10/10 for sure.

Yes. 6.0.4.3

Yes, all in the same session

Correct. I'm running android 4.3

Eclipse build 6
I flashed the new version 10/10 on my Eclipse build 6 which is 4.3. I cleared cache, flashed rom, flashed kernel, and rebooted. No data at all. I then flashed the rom back over the top to get the other kernel and everything is fine. I am using the newest CWM.

Thanks for the reports guys. Researching this issue is proving difficult as no one seems to have documented it in the "usual" places. The only suggestion I have so far is checking to make sure the permissions are correct on everything that is flashed. I took a look at a couple of other kernel dev's updater-scripts and tried to modify this one accordingly. Flashing from 10/10 to 10/11's still gave me working data. I'm trying to follow up with a few other devs so please don't think that I'm not working on this. If you flash 10/11 please report your findings!
Thanks!
