KUDOS to MobileTechVideo - My GS3 raised from the dead - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So.. I recently flashed a ASOP ROM with I9300 unknowingly onto my I535 GS3 phone (I was a bit too eager to flash and didn't look closely) Stupid me! . It didn't reboot after the flash and didn't respond to the power buttons!! OMG! I panicked a little and went researching on XDA forums. Soon I came to realize that I, the idiot, had hard bricked my GS3. I'm so glad I read XDA and found these guys. I quickly made a purchased and sent my phone in the very next hour of knowing I bricked it. I shipped it on Tuesday the 14th of May, they received it on Friday the 17th, worked on it and sent it out on Tuesday the 21st. I received my phone today on the 23rd! Simply amazing it is saved and I am back to ROOTED, restored my previous backup in TWRP and back in business.
I've flashed many many phones and different versions of ROM before but never had a Hard Brick, although I've encountered one soft brick before but easily recovered by using ODIN but nothing like this.. I'm really glad these guys exists! Otherwise i'd have to buy a new phone. So all in all $60 is better than spending >$300. :good:
Word of Wisdom. NEVER EVER Flash a I9300 onto your US Variant (in my case a I535 Verizon phone). It will hard brick! Lessons learned are hard to come by. :good:

It's pretty much everywhere to not flash a room that isn't categorized by your device because they all have different files and such. Just glad you got your device working.

I wonder if Verizon would have replaced it for a refurb.
Save yourself $60
but I agree, that's pretty sweet deal for $60 to get it back working.
Props to those guys.
I know you won't be flashing a ROM without knowing it's made for that phone again
sometimes we all gotta learn the hard way.
I've never bricked (yet.. knock on wood)
I can only imagine the terror once you rebooted and instead of a ROM you got a paperweight.

Ok so today I mow my yard and I plug in my Thunderbolt in to the USB charger on my PC when I come inside my phone is bootlooping. So I think ok whatever I will flash one of the many backup's I made.
So I pull the battery and boot into the bootloader, then when I go into recovery after about 2 seconds the phone powers off and starts bootlooping again??? Ok that's a first for me and I have been flashing and rooting since launch day of the OG Droid, (ok, ok not since the first day but like a month later). So I pull the battery again this time for 30 minutes because I read someone else had something like this happen yesterday. When I put the battery back in same thing! Now I pull the battery for 4 hours...same outcome.
Now I'm thinking RUU time so I grab the stock RUU pull the SD card from my Thunderbolt pop it in my Incredible load the RUU renamed to PG05IMG.zip and put it back in the Thunderbolt. Load the bootloader and flash the RUU. Reboot after it's done and would you believe it...the same thing! the phone won't load past the splash screen before rebooting.
I forgot to mention before trying all this I tried using adb to reboot into recovery and I kept getting "error: device not found" and I know how to use adb.
It's only been about 9 hours since I've been able to use my 2.3.4 GingerBread with parts of 3.0 Sense Thunderbolt and I already having withdrawals how am I going to make the next 2 to 3 weeks while it's being repaired???
Ok end rant...

Thanks, but I rooted it, therefore I have no warranty. I knew the chance I was taking when I rooted it so I'm paying for it to be repaired.
I'm loosing faith in the Thunderbolt. I really feel we are all just a bunch of beta testers.

I understand your rooted but if it cant boot up then there is a problem. Just go to verizon and show them. Once they see it cant boot properly they will exchange it or overnight one to you.

You may get away with getting it swapped through warranty. But I can't promise you it won't come back at you. Someone may have a solution for you though. Wouldn't give up yet. Sorry I don't.

Well then relate your problem with his. Just saying "your losing faith in Thunderbolt" tells me nothing. Don't mean to sound like an a$$, just saying. When I read your first comment I got nothing from it.
That being said...I haven't been a Bolt owner for long, but it does seem like a strange issue. You would think flashing a radio or backup would resolve the issue. But hasn't.
//Tap'd on my TBolt while grounded\\
Definitely sounds like a Warranty Issue. I'd try to get it exchanged if no one can come up for a solution to the problem.
I had a G1 back in the day that had some odd problem and I was rooted, Tmo looked at it and wouldn't touch it. So, I called HTC. I told them that I purchased the phone off Craigslist so Tmo couldn't help me, and asked how the warranty works on their end. They said that since the production of the phone started less than a year ago, they knew it was still eligible for warranty even without a receipt. There would be a triage fee if it was found to be a non-warranty issue, and it was something like $40 including the shipping back. I acted dumb when they asked if it was rooted...asked them what that meant? LOL. Sent it in, they fixed it and sent it back to me, no charge. Fast too. I was very happy and that is why I have stuck with HTC since then. It may or may not work for you, but it was painless for me.

They don't care. Take my word for it. If it never boots they won't care.
I'm actually having this exact same issue. Has anyone found a solution yet or is the only solution to have the phone replaced?
Wow. I thought for sure hbooting the unsigned stock RUU would fix this. How about hbooting a signed ruu? It wouldn't hurt at this point.
Also make sure when you renamed the pgimg05. Zip that there was nothing at the end of the extention. I've heard some people say that windows has been known not to show that full file extension correctly.

I thought hbooting the stock RUU would fix it as well, and yep it was named correctly. It's funny because it would stay on the hboot screen as long as I let it with no issue what so ever but within 2 seconds of going into recovery it would reboot.
I went back to Best Buy today as that is where I bought it to see how much they would charge to ship it out to be fixed. The mobile manager remembered me because I was 1st on the pre-order list. (I'm sure we all remember the train wreck the Best Buy pre-orders became) So any way he really went out of his way to help me. He said he has had 3 other Thunderbolts brought in for the same issue. He was able to send my phone in under their Black Tie program.
I told him I rooted the phone and was willing to pay for the repairs but he said he was pretty sure that the other 3 phones were not rooted. He said that he knew FOR SURE that at least one of the phones was not rooted because the lady that owned it did not have any branches in her family tree, (his words not mine). Since he has seen it 3 times he was not charging me. He only asked that I had the stock hboot on the phone. I had already flashed that in my attempt to get it running.
I'm with cstrife, I managed to destroy my tab with a mix of flashing and charging via outlets in India. It bootlooped for a while then just kind of gave up and began to display a strange download screen when I plugged it in to charge. I brought it to VZW and played stupid, I told them I woke up and it had this weird screen... I had a brand new one at my door the next morning and haven't heard a word from them... It probably just costs more to check it out deep enough to find out its rooted than it does to just give you a refurbished one, gut swap yours, and then send to someone else as a refurbished one...

I'm an idiot and flashed a ROM for Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I accidentally flashed a ROM for the Galaxy S II SGH-I777 instead of for the Sykrocket. Now my power button won't work at all. I'm afraid I may have completely hosed it. Anyone here who has a lot more knowledge than me have any suggestions on what I could possibly do to get my phone to at least turn on enough to flash a skyrocket rom?
It's done for. Flashing an i777 rom screws up the partitions and the ONLY. and I repeat, ONLY way to get it working again is to send it and get it JTAG'ed. Search. You'll find plenty. This is a recurring issue with users here, sadly. Just saw a topic yesterday about this.
Try download mode, or a usb jig to get into download. Basically your phone is bricked. If the jig does not work. You will want to consider a jtag service. Thank you, bye bye now.
I did the same thing in January, pretty dumb on my part. Totally bricked.

The explosion of ignorance lately has been amusing, discouraging, intriguing, and worrisome all at the same time.
I did it in January, not yesterday, and yes,it was pretty stupid in hindsight. I had done lots of ROM installs on my old Captivate, for some reason I didn't pay close enough attention to the ROM I was flashing on the Skyrocket and used the wrong one. I'm sure there are lots of people on here who have done the same thing but haven't admitted it.

No power to phone

Now I did search the forums and I didn't find anything thing like I have going on. First a little background. I was an iPhone user since iPhone was iPhone. I decided to try Android and was hooked. I got the SGH-i727. I have been flashing since day one. Well, here's my dilemma. I d/l'd a ROM that I thought was for the Skyrocket, but after I read more carefully and already flashed. It was for a i9000. Everything went fine during the ROM, but after a reboot my phone wont power on. No Lights, no vibration, nothing. I'm not sure if this was the dumbest thing I have done yet or if this is an easy fix. I know I should have read more carefully, but I got excited and couldn't help myself. I was running AOKP CM10 with no problems since the first ROM was out, but I got greedy. I hope some of you geniuses can help. I have taken the SIM, SD, battery out. But too no avail! Thanks guys!
If you flashed a ROM from a different phone, it's more than likely bricked. You try getting into download mode and all that already?
Apparently you didn't read enough, your phone is hard bricked you'll have to pay 50$ to get it repaired through jtag.

Look them up. Think I am going to try to return back to AT&T today and see what they say. I looked up JTAG and it's like 60 when all is said and done. I also contacted Samsung. What are the odds they will repair it. I opened a repair ticket and the guy I talked to said free repair unless it was water damaged. This sucks!
you could say you were upgrading to ICS through kies when the cabled got disconnected in the middle, may work and may not.
You might be not need jtag. Have you looked into a usb jig? You can buy them off of ebay for less then 10 bucks. If your in a hurry and have a spare micro usb cable and are good with your hands you can also make one.

That should force DL mode then from there flash back to stock.
You are hard bricked. The thing the dude above me said doesn't work for hard bricks.
Call ATT if you have warranty and tell them your phone won't turn on this morning and you don't know what's going on.
If you don't have warranty then jtag it.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have had this awesome phone for 5 weeks, so I am passed the 30 day "trial" period ATT allots you, but I think being a customer for about 15 years may pay off. If not JTAG will work, because I think Sammy will charge me because it had been flashed, and thus warranty voided. Will let everyone know of my successes after Monday evening when I attempt the upgrading to ICS and now it's not working thing.
Going back to Apple for a few days is about to kill me.
Do you have AT&T warranty? Wait nvm, you got a 1 warranty so AT&T will replace it free of charge.
Just tell them you were upgrading to ICS thru kies and when your phone went to reboot it didn't turn on. It's been happening for some reason. People call it the UCLF6 brick bug.

I'm not sure how tough Samsung is on this. I had a custom rom on mine, running fine for a month or so. One day, I go to grab my phone off the dresser and it's so hot I can barely hold it. I powered it off, let it cool down, and went to power on and got nothing. I had a jig and tried it to no avail. Finally, I called ATT and told them what happened. They sent a new (well, refurbished) phone, and I sent mine back to ATT. I was so worried they were going to charge me since it was rooted and running a custom rom, and my wife HATES that I flash and just looks for a reason to get me to stop, but I never heard anything else about it. They said on the phone that it sounded like the processor ws fried. You could use that story too.

Nice!

Bricked, need help!!!

I had CM9 On my rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, and my phone would crash randomly in the middle of changing songs on playerpro or in the middle of phone calls, so I tried to download SiyahKernel hoping it would add some stability to my ROM. Well I had 2 different versions of the kernel somehow. One was SiyahKernel 3.something, and the other was 2.5. I assumed the 3.something would be for the S3 and the 2 something was a false download that I got on accident and was made for the S2 or something, but when I tried to flash the 3.something it didn't work, versus when I tried flashing the 2.5 it installed perfectly fine. So, here's the fun part...when I went to reboot my phone it died COMPLETELY. I can't start the phone in download mode to odin it, can't get into recovery to flash an old nandroid. Phone won't turn on, won't charge, will do absolutely nothing, and I know for sure the battery was charged to 90% when it crapped out. I've done battery pulls, I actually did a 3 hour battery pull at one point...I don't have insurance, and I don't have the $$$ to go buy another phone, so if anyone has some ideas on how I could either get my phone back operational, or a cheaper solution (like a jigg) it would be MUCH appreciated. I wasn't just a noob jumping into it on my S3, I've been rooting, romming, and flashing **** since 2009, and it's my 10th smartphone, but my first brick ever. Please help!

This post is ridiculous. Asurion blows, never have had a good experience with them over using 5 phones insured by them. Only ever had 2 crap out on me (hardware-wise. If it was ever software related I did it, and knew exactly how to handle it, but the 2 that were done were spidered screens). They gave me a broken refurbished evo back for the very first phone I ever had that I rooted, rommed, and hacked on for DAYS trying to learn the entire process...all those manhours and they send me a refurbished phone with nothing on it, and a screwed up LCD digitzer...do NOT recommend asurion whatsoever, and will never use them again no matter what carrier I go with.

Why would you use odin to flash a kernel? I use cwm all the time for roms and kernels alike. Odin for radios or to return to stock. Cwm does everything else I need it to do. Same mistake could have been made on a computer guy downloaded two kernels and flashed the wrong one.
OP I am sorry for your loss.

imo insurance fraud is not the right answer. the right thing to do is research then flash, dont flash then research. ofcourse its now standard in america to be bailed out for every mistake we make, so perhaps your right.... I have yet to cave in and accept this kind of mentality.
The profit margins these companies make is ridiculous to begin with. It's not fraud, the only thing that may be considered even close to it is claiming that the phone is missing or damaged beyond repair due to something that was out of your control. Non the less your insurance covers all these avenues twice a year.
In reality, a bricked phone should be covered under insurance, and I'm sure if you have the proper legal knowledge you could argue that further and make them cover it without having to tell a white lie. Insurance is simple, covering a loss. And a loss is technically a brick (that's not open for debate either, that's correct), but there is a loophole they use where they can refuse to honor a claim if they feel to do so (hence modifications).
F that. I pay for insurance, I do my part. Not to mention when I actually signed up for the insurance, I asked the vzw rep if a rooted phone is covered, and his response was exactly this: don't take a chance, smash it up and send it back, or disappear the device.
I do not abuse or condone anything of what I said, I have yet to make a claim, but be assured, if I brick my device after 5 years of carrying ins. I am getting my money's worth out of it.

I bricked it......

I flew too close to the sun! I'm an amateur just living off of the greatness that makes this site popular, but I've been fortunate over the years. It finally caught up with me. I have put many, many ROMs on my Nexus 7, Droid X and SG3 without any problems. I think I became over confident in my abilities. When I first started I would read through the whole process and research before leaping but this time I must have missed a step.
The steps to death of a phone
1. Had Pure Google AOSP on my phone for months with no problems (loved it)
2. Thought I had worked a a trade for a Galaxy Note II, so I put the newest Samsung Version back on the phone
3. Trade didn't work out, so I was just going to keep it and try a few other ROMs
4. Used my same 'ol procedures for trying to FLASH, didn't work because of the new Samsung Version
5. Played around awhile got in put CleanRom 6, but the cellphone would not not connect(Stuck in roaming) crap happens
6. Took it back to stock. dialed *2767*3855# everything worked fine
7. Decided to try a few other ROMs
8. This time I during flashing I the phone posted some message from Samsung saying the phone had a improper OS, contact Samsung. (can't remember exact message) This is were I probably screwed up. I got a little lazy and was playing around with my Note 10.1 while things were loading on my SG3. I had a few problems getting back to CWM. Finally, and I'm not sure how, I got back into recovery.
9. Loaded crDroid, got a little confused on which modem to pick, I think I picked XXELLA, everything else seemed straight forward.
10. Package seemed to install
11. On final reboot, the phone went off and never came back... No CWM, No Download mode, Won't charge, zero response to Odin
Oh well, crap happens! I knew it was always a risk. I will send it to MobileTechVideos and see if he can help me out.
EDIT: Oh, I just wanted to say to everyone, I love this site and the people on it.... I could never say that in the "Developer" section because I didn't have enough post. I don't know what drives you people but keep it up! And please don't take my screw up as a negative against any ROM. This is surely my fault for getting lazy. Works for thousands but fails for me? That is me not the package. Will I stop? NO! I'm getting ready to put something on my Nexus 7 as I type this.
SECOND EDIT: I think BattsNotlncld found the problem in two minutes. I don't think there is a crDroid package for SCH-1535. I was on another webpage looking for packages and ran across crDroid.
Easy to see where you messed up. I've never heard of crDroid or XXELLA but a quick google search brought me to the Galaxy S III I9300 forum (aka International version). Flashing a ROM made for the International version will surely give you a hard brick.
Go to www.mobiletechvideos.com
They are the best at fixing bricked phones. I bricked my SGS2 and they had it back to me good as new in 10 days.

Yeap, it looks like in my hast to download packages, I slipped into the I9300 world and left my SCH-1535 world. I just recreated my download chain and I clicked on a external link from another webpage to get to the crDroid download. Stupid hurts. I should have stopped when I saw the modem question, but I didn't.
damn this is tough to see. sorry to read about this.
after a mistake like this you will be more careful, bricked an HTC Droid Eris (my first smartphone) and also loaded a leaked firmware, which, stopped us from getting root, which came about a week after that new leaked firmware (lesson learned).
hope to see you back in action soon
thanks
Thanks for taking the time to post your follies! As a novice, I will remember your tale and read everything to the point of understanding before flashing anything.
I've been a long time user of the site & just signed up a few days ago lol I've seen this many times.
Yeah, international versions will brick your phone. That's why it's extremely hard to port an international rom
Good luck man! But like bigtom said, mobiletechvideos can fix almost anything.

It's very refreshing to see a user take responsibility and not whine and complain for their mistake. I commend you for that.
With that being said it sucks to see this happen to you. I have never heard of mobiletechvideos.com before this thread but did some looking and it's impressive what they promise. (damn good reviews to back it up too) Looks like it's $60 or so plus shipping to get it up and running again, sounds like a good deal to me.
Good luck, let us know what you do!

I bricked my SG3 just before Christmas and had it back from mobiletechvideos.com before New Years Eve. Pretty good for standard shipping and holiday season!
Mailing it off tomorrow! I bought a Note 2 until my SG3 gets fixed. I had to do something, because I don't have a home phone and my wife travels frequently. It is extremely hard to time an airport pickup without a cellphone. I love my SG3 but I really like the Note 2. I will be selling one in a few weeks. Which one? ....... we will see!

Some of the best lessons are the ones learned the hard way... but still sucks!
When I got my S3, coming from a HTC Incredible, the biggest concern I had was how big the phone was.... now I would totally consider the Note2. Post which way you decide!
