formatting SD card for particular ROM - General Questions and Answers

Hi All
I'm looking to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234221 on to my galaxy ace and have a question about formatting the SD card for it.
It talks about ext-4 partition and I was wondering what size to format the partition if using an 8gb card?
I was thinking - 1gb for the ext-4 and the rest for fat32?
halp please

What class is your sdcard? Are you planning to use int2sd?

You must used the Fire Kernel because you don't have a 4Ext partition
and with Swap kernel and a Sdcard Class 6, you need a 4Ext partition.
So finally, it will depend of the choice of your kernel, and the better choice if you use the Swap kernel, it's to format all in 4Ext
And if you want an another answer, go to post here, you can do without problem

I am going to get a class 10 8gb card this weekend. the swap kernel is what I was going to use.
Why should I format the whole card in 4ext? If I do that, I won't be able to add files from my windows 7 PC will I??? I just don't know much about ext4. I do store some music and stuff on it.
Thanks so much for your help

Which recovery do you use ?
I wrote a mistake about to format whole sdard to 4Ext
1 - You must have 1 Fat32 partition and 1 EXT4 partition on your sdcard
2 - If you rather use a computer for creating and formatting partitions keep in mind that both partitions must be primary partitions (not logical)
3 - The recommended size of your EXT4 partition is depending on how many roms and apps you are going to install.. 512M is the minimal size
Go to one of the links that I've wrote above and sent your question.

meaning what? swap and ext4?
swap reduces your sd battery life, but it's said that it's not very noticeable, and it's needed with sense 3.5
ext4 just adds space for apps on sdcard as if they were on phone's rom
I mean swap, sorry.
What do you mean with reduce? And how can i swap my sdcard? Can you post me a thread please ? )

I just partitioned my MicroSD card with MiniTool.
First Partition: FAT
Second Partition: Ext2
My laptop recognizes the card through card reader and I can see the two partitions in MiniTool, but my phone (HTC Explorer) does not recognize it. Any suggestions?
Well how are you checking if your phone sees it. Some roms can't use sd2ext. Take a good file explorer like root explorer ans see if there's a folder names sd-ext

I simply use the phone's recovery (in my case 4EXT) , which will walk me thru everything, I didn't bother with a swap partition but rather a dataswap option (specific to my rom), and a 2GB sd-ext (Again supported by default on my rom). And used 4EXT to convert all my internal file systems to ext4 filetype instead of ext3 (again my rom supports it, but not all roms do).
Essentially you can partition SD and most everything else via ClockworkMod or 4EXT.
PS: Generally sd-ext should be the FIRST partition. (or second in the case of swap, sd-ext and fat32), since some Roms will not automatically recognize it if not placed in that order. thus another reason to do it via recovery.
Use the recovery on your phone to partition your SD card then plug your SD card into a Linux box and check to see if it's EXT4 using Gparted.
how to get sd-ext before fat32 in 4ext?

I'm running mimicry-1.4.0, 4ext touch, same as you. When I ask it to partition my new, 16gig, class 10 card, it asks:
size of first sd-ext, to which I reply 2048
size of second sf-ext, to which I reply skip
size of swap, which I also skip,
and then it does the remainder as fat32.
BUT...the fat partition is at the beginning of the card...not the order the app asked for my input...and I don't see how to change them.
Maybe not being first is okay with mimicry?
thanks for your help,
p-d
ps all my file systems are ext4 on the phone itself.

Older s2e may need a specific partition order but both clockwork and 4ext arrange in this order, and the enabler script in my signature needs no apps and works fine with mimicry.

[Q][Help][Tips] 16gb microsd partitioning using 4Ext Touch Rc6

Hello.
Please help me on partitioning my sdcard. I noticed after installing apps, [got so many apps, it's 16gb yeah] my phone got slow when opening some games and applications.
I tried partitioning using 4ext touch, and my storage became small from 16gb to 5+gb.
How can i partition my microsd without losing a big space?
I still need a big space though.
Thank you!
Okey this is what i did, please someone reply if i did something wrong.
1st sd-ext partition -> skip
swap parition -> 256
Is this ok?

[Q] Partitioning MicroSD for Link2SD

What is the best way to create 2 primary partitions for using Link2Sd on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.
I have a 32 GB Micro SD card that needs the treatment.
Many thanks to all in advance.
Regards
Court
PS: I use mini tool home edition as a partitioning tool
which ROM ?
It depends on what ROM you are running. After trial and error ext4 was detected for my stock ICS and now works with CM10.1 too.
So partition it as 5 GB ext4 (more than sufficient ) and rest FAT. I too have 32 GB class 10 in this way via mintool partition.
PS: you cannot increase or decrease the size of ext4 using minitool once the partition is created. So plan properly while creating the partitions.

Google "gParted Live" and you'll find the cd. You can create your partition of EXT3 or EXT4. You can resize the partition as well. There are YouTube videos to help you see how to do it.
I don't know why you'd want Link2SD. It will permit you to store the app, cache and davlik in the ext partition instead of in the /data on the deviice. You likely have adequate storage in that device partition for those items. I think you you would do better with swapping /mnt/sdcard with /mnt/ExtSdCard.
I actually have tried both together and found no advantage to the Link2SD.

Hey Einstein,
I downloaded Gparted but found that i need to create a bootable image & than use it
Will it work if I drop my current ext & create a new partition with 512 mb using the good old CWM

You just repartition through cwm(tried it myself before). Just like a first time partitioning

Hi Borchaniz....i have a few queries...
1. How should i delete my current ext partition...could'nt find any option in CWM to delete the partition.
2. if i go ahead & direclty follow the first time partitioning process what will happen to my existing partition...wil that be part of my new sd-ext

Re: How to resize my sdcard Partition.
Your SD card will be formatted, old partition deleted, new partition created.
Sent from my GT-P7310 using xda app-developers app
Just in case it isn't clear, you will lose all data on the sd card when you repartition. If you use gparted, you can accomplish the same thing, while preserving the data.

Copy your all data from SD card.
Go to Phone Settings> Storage Settings> Unmount SD card> Erase SD card.
This will delete all your old partitions from SD card.
Now reboot in CWM recovery and partition your SD card according to your need.
Restore your data.
Cheers!!!
Use minipartition tool from a PC, connect your phone as usb storage and it will resize your sd card partition without formatting.
Success
ThanX for the Help Guys...
I have successfully resized my partition to 512 MB using ClockworkMod Recovery. As mentioned by "upconvert"...old partition deleted, new partition created.
Would like to share my experience with the below tools...
GParted - Itz an 100 MB ISO file & after downloading got to know that it can be used only from Boot mode :bad:
MiniTool Partition - This one has a pretty neat UI & the setup is sized just 14 MB. The problem here was the Resize option didn't work for me. Not sure on the exact reason , maybe it requires the memory card to be connected using a card Reader & not as a USB storage.
Phone :- Lg Optimus One
ROM :- HoneyWizz by Kssood & Kukde
--> Hit Thanx if i Helped you by anyway

I don't know why minitool partition didn,t work, I personally used it on a phone connected as usb storage. Maybe there is a problem with order of operations (delete one partition before resize the other etc. but i'm not sure).
Anyway I'm happy that you solved your problem.

Can you provide a tutorial on how to do that? I have a 16 GB SD card. Out of the 14GB available, 13GB is my main partition. 1 GB is my app partition. I want to increase the app partition without formatting my SD Card.
Thanks!
MiniTool Partition Wizard 10 worked perfectly for resizing a 16GB to 64GB for the kids' Kindle Fire tablet. I initially cloned the 16GB partition to the 64GB using WinDiskImager32, then resized it afterwards.

help with creating partition

Hi
i saw that im can incrase phone internal memory by a partition
how can i'm do it?
beacause im saw a tutorial on cm11 post
and how much partiton size i can choose?
because im saw that im can do 512mb partiton
and 1024 mb partiton
and if i making partiton the apps will removed?
If you create a partition all the stuff on you SD card will be removed.
512 MB should be enough for most people IMHO.
You can create a partition by using Partition Manager.

XDA is a global community and as long as your English is understandable you're good to go
That guide should work and yes a partition will allow you to install many apps.

From my experience if you want to partition your SD Card, it's best if you first backup all you SD Card data to other storage, and then partition it using Partition Manager or Recovery like CMW, and than you copy back your data to the SD Card. On some occasion (twice to be exact) I found that partitioning you SD Card using Partition Manager without backup and clean up/delete all partition before creating second partition will reasult in read only second partition on android.

Also doesn't partitioning memory card formats SD card before partitioning (Except gParted)

You meant external (sdcard-ext2) memory? Then follow @akiratoriyama suggestion. Internal memory /data partition is fix, 200MB. And it's dangerous to repartition, AFAIK.
