Hi, I have a sensation XE that i S Off-ed and rooted using FloWolf's EXCELLENT guide before installing CM 10.1-20130322-Albinoman887-pyramid. However, i started facing the issue of the hardware keys giving feedback when touched, but not working- instead, it happens as if the lowest part of the display, right above the key i pressed, has been touched. I updated to the 20130510 nightly but it did not fix the issue. I now want to try going back to the stock ROM but can't find an easy guide. I never took a backup of the stock ROM with CWM . I have the HBOOT 1.29 model
Now another issue has sprung up. Even when using a single finger, the phone sometimes behaves as if i'm multi-touching it. It only gets fixed if i lock and then unlock the screen.
Will going back to the stock rom fix these issues or will i have to get it repaired? If the stock rom will fix it, can i please get a link for it that's as easy as Flo's guide to rooting was. Thanks!

I am on ICS 4.0.3 and Stock ROM.
Since last few days, I am having somewhat similar touch screen issues after the warranty of my Sensation XE expired last month.
At any given random time of the day, my touch screen goes berserk....!!! I am using Apex Launcher and have folders containing various apps in the Dock. These folders start moving around/rearranging automatically, apps start opening randomly on their own, screen and navigation keys (red ones on bottom panel) become unresponsive, keyboard comes up on its own and characters appear as if being typed... etc. If I lock and unlock the screen (all hardware keys - volume & power - work fine during all this), touch screen becomes responsive again but only for a short period. Again the whole cycle repeats. The only way to stop this for longer period of time is restarting the phone. This state last upto anywhere between 6-10 hours be fore my phone acts up again. I have tried the Factory Reset too, but with no results.
I have installed Avast Mobile Security soon after I got my XE. I have also installed around 80-90 paid as well as free apps.
Currently my XE has free resources as follows:
RAM 640MB out of 1.1GB
SD Storage 25GB out of 29.71GB
Though the behavior looks like some kind of virus activity, Avast doesn't show any malware or virus on the system.
Which issue does this behavior pertain to, a hardware or a software issue?
Any kind of help to pinpoint the cause of this issue is greatly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards.
Hello,
I am having the exact same problem as the two mentioned above. Sometimes the thouch screen doesn't response at all, start doing things by itself or the capacitive buttons on the bottom doesn't respond. To fix the problem I have to press the on/off button to lock and unlock the phone but after a minute it's going all over again. I thought this maybe could be a memory problem, as if the phone simply hangs because it is acting very slow when the problem shows up.
Last weeks I've tried many ROMS as I thought it would be a mem problem. Cyanogenmod 10.1 and 10.2, ViperS 1.6.3 and 3.1.2, Android Revolution and with all these ROMS the same problem showed up. So I'm thinking it's almost for sure that this is a hardware problem. I got my Sensation XE in January 2012 so there's still a waranty of a half year. In case this is a hardware problem I'm thinking about sending the phone back to HTC, but I'm not sure about what is causing this problem.
So, if anyone knows the cause of this problem, please share It's really annoying and makes the phone pretty much unusuable. In October I will be able to get a new phone but it would be nice to have a very good one for spare
Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot Far_SighT for pointing me in right direction.
As per the "Touchscreen Issues" topic in "General" category, my phone will be undergoing second cycle of "Pull Pin - Add Tin Foil - Drain Battery - Take out Battery - Press Power - Keep Battery outside overnight - Recharge fully without touching screen" procedure.
First cycle didn't help much, but as per the post I have to go through this cycle at least 2-3 times.
I will get back with the results.
Thanks & Regards.
Update:
Followed the steps in the "Touchscreen Issues" thread under "General" category, and it worked!!
All my touchscreen issues have been solved by that simple solution. A great post!!
Highly recommended for solving similar touchscreen issues, specially when you have dropped your phone.
Thanks & Regards.

Can you elaborate which step you think fixed the issue of having to press the power button to make the screen responsive? I went throught a full battery discharge-leave overnight-full charge without touching the phone, but i did this procedure only once and didnt have the patience to try again as it didnt improve the situation at all.:cyclops:

Please follow my last post in "Touchscreen Issues" thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239238&page=50
Mostly one cycle does not help as per my experience. I had to go through 3 complete cycles to get my XE fixed. It made huge difference only after second cycle.
Also, other than aluminum foil over the silver square on the side of back panel, place a piece of thin paper in the depression on the back panel (check the second snapshot in above thread) which should cover the metal casings of both SIM card and SD Card so that they do not touch the back panel.
The steps taken in the cycle after placing the foil and paper:
1] Drain the battery fully.
2] Remove the battery.
3] Press Power button as if trying to power on your mobile.
4] Leave the battery out for overnight.
5] Replace the battery and back panel taking care to see that both foil and paper are in correct positions.
6] Recharge your phone fully without touching the screen and without powering on (this to prevent you from using the phone. ).
7] Disconnect the charger and use your phone till battery drains out and phone is ready for next cycle.
Hope this is helpful to sort out your issue.:fingers-crossed:
Thanks & Regards.

Thanks for the tip but did that already. I read the OP well and a lot of pages in this topic but no luck so far. Stopped even trying because half October I will have a new phone, the One to be exact. So it's no use.
What I did try was the recalibration of the touch screen by flashing the image file. That worked for a few days maybe and now it's drama all over again. Sometimes I pull out the battery for a night, push the on/off button blabla but no luck too. I think it's actually half broken because on some spots on the screen it's registering no touch. I do have to admit my phone fell a couple of times past 2 years, without a case or something. So I guess for me the only option is a new digitizer.
Like i said, I really would like to have a good spare one. Went looking on E-Bay and for 16 dollars I found a digitizer for the Sensation 4G. I have a XE, will that work with that digitizer? A digitizer for the XE was 23 bucks, but if only the color of the capacitive buttons are different I don't care and I save 7 bucks
Thanks!

Issues with touchscreen being unresponsive.
Important Isuue usually appears at least after a week of owning the device
Quick test:
Lock device. Unlock, launch camera app in the lockscreen, take picture, try pressing back button, see if it responds straight away or with a delay. Test it with all apps on lockscreen.
Issue unlocking ? I.e dragging circle to the middle?
Bottom of a screen not responsive sometimes.
Back button slow to respond.

CAUSE Grounding pin not touching back cover, which causes (by the looks of it) build up of static which messes up touch screen.
FIX Best to use in conjunction with fixes below.
POSSIBLE FIXes if above doesn't work, which it should, but don't expect immidiate results.
1.Shut down phone and pull battery out for at least an hour (i recommend overnight). Press power button as to turn phone on, which in theory should discharge all the left over current in the hardware.
Give it a go and let me know if it works.
2.Letting battery discharge till phone turns off,put on charge and don't touch it till it's full.
I want to thank abrown0809, eliteone, stuart0001(legendary patience ), zmfl, maschenazi, nugzo and all other people i forgot to mention for sticking with me while trying to work out FIX. Thanks to all the posters too.
I take NO credit for the fix.
Poll is here to show how many people have this problem to HTC, not to work out what percentage of users have it, as it will definitely be incorrect.
Vote yes if you EVER experienced touchscreen problems, even if its gone now.
PETITION for HTC to admit that there is touch screen problem.

Had big problems with the first two, both returned... Third is an improvement, however:
Seems to be a problem with the application data screen (where you can move to SD etc...) all of the data goes mental and the buttons flash sometimes causes a crash that only battery removal cures...
Back button seems to forget to work when the screen unlocks, normally returns to normal after several actions
Unlock screen is hard to unlock sometimes... helps if you are holding the device...
Screen is sometimes slow to respond
SD app icons on home screens do not regenerate after reset...

Edited first post
HT15JV - no touchscreen or lockscreen issues so far
Only real bug is that non HTC widgets sometimes get flickering rainbow coloured stripes but they are strictly attached to the widget and vanish once I replace the it. So this should not be a display problem especially as the HTC widgets are never afflicted.

HT15RT, may build and ship date
all of the above in terms of problems. unlocking problem, bottom of the touchscreen not being responsive, swipes registered as taps fairly frequently, issues with wifi cycling and never connecting, and it has ruined the SD card it came with (do the point that it gets detected by my win7 computer but crashes explorer, and on my mac it just isn't detected) as well as the 16GB microsd I foolishly swapped in from my DSLR.
Did I mention that I still am absolutely in love with the phone?
Hmmm, still a bit random.... We just need to find a common factor. If anyone spots anything in common, just mention it, even if you are not sure.
I appreciate this thread. I am still considering purchasing this phone but the two major hold backs are the wifi signal deathgrip issue and of course the touch screen. I kinda went through this debacle with the mt4g and don't really want to go through the hassle again of finding a working model.

Did those with or without problems use a screen protector?
I left the stock screen protector on my unit and it works beautifully. Maybe because the touch screen unit is slightly displaced, static build up on the gorilla glass causes issues with some unit?
HT15RT works perfectly
Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..

Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

Cheers Ben! Love how your always here to help!
I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.
Don't know how hot it gets in cars in Florida....but I know that it can kill pets let alone phones!
Cheers, not worried about my phone, just trying to relate that's all

My phone is just a month old now
Hopefully they just send me a new phone

Though my phone was not left anywhere where temp was extreme, mine is also doing this since this week,, Also a few months old and I blame the apps installed . I ahd battery monitor and suspected just that prog..
I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Yeh, some of them have the same problem after a couple if weeks old (not exposed to heat or anything) what causes this problem?
How often do u have this problem??
My old Nokia 5230 has the same problem
Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?
2) Has a new application been recently downloaded:?
3) Please can you turn off all applications and UN-install any which are unessential, As they may be causing issues:?
4) What have you already done/tried to troubleshoot your issue/s:?
5) When did your issue/s occur or re occur:?
6) Is you device or applications fully up to date:?
Should the above fail to restore your device to full working order, the device (MAY) need to be sent for repair.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
If this response has resolved your query, and you have no further questions please close this ticket by following the link below. Upon closure of the ticket you will be invited to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey which should take no more than 1 minute to complete.

It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully
So what's your uptime since you changed??

I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!
I lock my phone and about 10 mins later I go to unlock it and the phone powers up meaning that it has been turned off. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the charge of the battery but it keeps doing this. The other week the phone wouldn't respond for about 5 hours I would touch it and the touch screen was completely dead. I locked the phone and then the screen went black and the touch buttons at the bottom lit up and that was it the phone crashed so I needed to restart it and it just wouldn't work. 5 hours later when I woke up it responded and Bare in mind I ran about 5 ruus to get the phone back to stock so it wasn't a software problem. So has anyone else experienced one of these problems. The random shutdown is my issue at the moment. I'm considering returning it for repair because isn't it true that htc have a 2 year warranty in the uk?
Sounds daft but I'd put a piece of folded paper on top of the battery to ensure it has perfect contact and isn't able to move at all.....I have heard of others who have experienced this issue.
I would also see if you could get another battery for a short time and try that just to rule out that it is an issue with the battery.

Doesn't sound daft it's a great Idea. I have blu-tack on the slide off cover at the bottom to keep it from jiggling as one of the plastic clips broke. I will probably test another battery because they aren't exactly expensive. Do you know anything about HTC's warranty int he uk ben_pyett? Thanks for the help

I have heard multiple users that they simply rang HTC up, complained that battery didn't work and got a new one sent out.....so try that....and attempt if possible to hang on to old one, as if it turns out to be device, you get a free battery
Same issue for me, it drove me nuts. Turned out to be a faulty battery when sent off to HTC/Vodafone for repair. They replaced it so I wonder if it's a known issue.

This.
My phone used to shut down randomly and I searched and found out that it is due to the bad design of battery placement in this phone. All I had to do was put a small piece of paper and it has never shutdown till then.
I'm definitely going to try this, I've been getting lots of resets and I'm relieved it's not a rom issue
edit: how many times did you guys fold the paper over?

i had issues with my phone turning off too, had it slightly wet at one point so i took it to a phone repair joint, they replaced a few things charged me and it had the same problems afterwards, a test battery proved it was the bloody battery all along!
the tech there let me know our batteries have a soft edge that when pushed up hard against the battery slot it slightly deforms, seems like a bad design if you look at the battery up close you can see one where the edges get pushed in a bit, (well on mine anyway) the test battery i borrowed didn't have the edges pushed in.
Had this problem too. Paper did the trick.

Lost touchscreen handling in upper and lower part of my screen!!!Pls Help!
I have a rooted device with xsba's custom rom (4.0.4). The problem started before this ROM. I am pretty sure that this is no rom issue. I have flashed the phone several times with numerus roms. Problem persists.
I already have changed touchscreen once because of a serius fall (broke) approximately 6 months ago.
These are all the facts. Before xsba's rom i used thiaiz o3d. (2.3.7). The problem started one day that i hadn't charged the phone up. When the battery fell under 5 % the phone went berserk. (Numerus button presses all the time)
I couldn't even reboot. When I finally turned it off by removing battery and restarted the phone the upper field of touchscreen of the phone never worked again.
Yesterday i failed to charge again.ASfter finally restarting the same issue appeared in the lower field of touchscreen. Please advice!!!!!!!!
Is there a way to solve this problem without changing the touchscreen?

Now , you need to go to developer options in the settings and enable show touches option. Then you touch and slide to the parts that don't work . If you see the line going there , then it's a problem with your ROM. If it's not , then you possibly have a broken touchscreen. Check the contact of the touchscreen ribbon and see if it's tightly sitting on the slot , press it down and try again.
If it's not working , you have no choice but to replace the touchscreen. You can buy one off eBay for 19 dollars and free shipping. It's made in China but it works well without problems for the past 6 months with my device.
Hope I helped.
Cheers!

I have already checked the rom.the problem is not there.I have checked the contact of the ribbon yesterday and everything was fine. The touchscreen that i have is a chinese one.And it lasted for 6 months or so. So you might want to get ready for a new one as well!!!!!
I am going to buy one for me from ebay today. I have no choise as it appears.

HI did you ever solve this? I have the same problem, or very similar with middle and lower sections of screen dead, strange ghost touches and screen going crazy every so often, all started after I rooted phone. Was it just a broken touch screen? Cheers

Hello XDA,
My Nexus 5 running CM12 5.0.2 nightly will not respond to the touches anymore infact when I press the power button to activate the display it acts as if someone is touching it randomly messing all the apps that are running and opening and closing many other things.
Furthermore it displays weird and burned lines throughout the screen. It was not dropped, no water went inside the device or anything. If it helps I did install the OTA updates that CM gives us.
I have also attached pictures so you may get a better understanding of my problem.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm I see. Well since a month HAS passed, its definetly not the rom thats causing the problem, i don't know if anything regarding the software could even be causing the problem. Its 100% hardware and by that i mean the screen, you should change it, the touch and also the display are messed up.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news - but your screen is toast. Fortunately you can replace the touch and display components all at once.
http://www.amazon.com/Skiliwah-Digitizer-Assembly-Google-nexus5/dp/B00HN0U168
Here is what you need to perform the repairs - and here are the procedures for disassembly.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Disassembling+Nexus+5+Display+Teardown+-+liquid+damage/32410
Trust me, it's not that difficult. Unfortunately, it's a bit pricey ($60 for the screen and digitizer), nevertheless much cheaper than a new device or sending your device in for repairs.
Rma
Problem Solved
The screen isn't toast, neither is the digitizer. I have 2 of these phones. The parts which cause problems like this are the main board and the ribbon with the USB connector on it, which also attaches the screen & digitizer to the main board. One was showing lines exactly like this, & also no touch. I put a replacement main board in. Works great now. The other, wouldn't even turn on. I put the main board from the first phone in the second one, it still wouldn't turn on. I replaced the ribbon cable, it turns on and perfectly replicates the issue from the first phone. So now, I have one fully functioning LG Nexus 5, and another which turns on with the same problem as yours. This is good, I started out with 2 of them that were useless to me. So, it appears that your display and touch issues are caused solely by a bad main board. A replacement main board costs somewhere around $75. After swapping stuff around, I have 2 bad main boards, 1 bad USB ribbon & 1 working phone of 2. Not bad, not bad at all.
