Under the sync settings for my Google account there are a few new settings. One is app data which showed up a few days ago and then today I noticed an auto backup setting. I have no idea what they do though. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I'm pretty sure that syncing app data syncs data/ notifications from apps across all your devices. For example, earlier today I got an email (gmail account) and the notification showed up on my phone. I addressed the email on my laptop through gmail and the notification cleared from my phone automatically.

I'm almost positive that it pertains to the new games multiplayer Google rolled out

Tough call since Google just rolled out so many new products/upgrades but I know that their talk replacement "hangouts" syncs data between all devices. Worked good for me yesterday. Might be the app data part? Guess you could unchecked it and see what breaks.

Hi,
When I first got my phone a month ago and not knowing what I was doing, when prompted to log into a Gmail account, I set things up with my tertiary/third-most-used account. Little did I know the consequences. When I decided I wanted to now set the phone up with my primary account, I discovered that the only way to do so was with a hard reset!
Well, after going through that process and now wanting to download and install several dozen Market apps that I previously had installed (several of which I'd paid for), I logged into Market, only to find a message saying "No downloads from Android Market."
I assume that Market doesn't recognize my new Gmail address as belonging to the same person as the one I was using previously (even after I added it). Is there a way that I can associate the two accounts for Market so that I can get my apps back?
Thanks!
This might be a dumb question and a little too late, but is there a reason you NEED the phone set up with your most used account? If I'm not mistaken, it ought to be painfully easy to set the phone up with a second google account for things like gmail and calendar and such. You might even be able to get contact sync from a second google account, with apps and such just syncing from the old account that you already used for that purpose.
I'd have at least given that a try before doing a full wipe, but you might have reasons I haven't thought of yet.
Not a dumb question at all. In fact, I'm the one feeling pretty dumb right now, for jumping the gun like I did. I did have a couple of other reasons, but I'm beginning to see that it wasn't as

...worth the cost. The other problem now is that I'm deluged by mail from my primary Gmail account. It also goes to my ISP account, where I can read it much more efficiently.
I can see another hard reset in my near future. :-(
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I can tell you from experience (I've flashed a few roms...) that a hard reset isn't nearly as hard when you're syncing to the google account that has all your contacts and apps attached to it...
Silas, you lost me. What do you mean that it isn't as hard? Because you don't lose as much data? Are you talking about doing a hard reset without switching accounts like I did?
Would I be better to reset again (not a big deal at this point) and go back to the way it was, or not? Would I get my apps back (I hope)?
FWIW, I use my Gmail accounts only to collect and back up my email accounts, and for quick searches. I thought I might start using Google Calendar, though, and thought it might be better to use the one in my main Gmail account. Possibly I could sync the same calendar to both accounts, though -- could I?
And finally, is there any way at all to get my paid apps back with my current setup?
Thanks, everyone.

This might help you. Go into gmail and click the account address in the upper right corner. At the bottom is an option for adding an account. You should be able to let you apps back after adding that other account back. Hope it helps. If not, at least I tried.

Well, I thought I had replied a couple of hours ago, and here's my message, still waiting to post. Sigh....
Thank you, ZeroRilix. Unfortunately, no dice.
When I did that, there were already three accounts there. After hard resetting and setting up my primary Gmail account, I had also set up my other two Gmail account in Accounts & sync in Settings. However, when I viewed them as you suggested, it said that neither of them had been synced. So I made sure that Contacts, Calendar, and Mail were synced for all three accounts. When I went into Market and viewed My Apps, all I saw were still the few I had downloaded since the hard reset.
Thanks, though....
No prob. Everything you've already tried should've worked. I might suggest contacting Android Market and letting them know what's going on. I have included the link to the appropriate form to fill out. Sorry your still having issues, and maybe they can help you further. If you get the issue resolved, post back here so users who might run into this same issue cam fix it. Good luck!

I thought for sure I'd replied to this, but I can't see my response anywhere. Don't know why I'm having such trouble posting.
Thanks very much for this. I sent a support request yesterday and will let you know what they say. Unfortunately, it's Saturday, and I assume nobody's there to answer. Why do things always go wrong on the weekend?
Hi,
Here's my latest update. Not wanting to wait till Monday or later for a reply from Market Support, I decided to try posting my question to the Android forum at androidforums.com. I got a couple of helpful responses and I'm back in business. Here's the thread for anyone interested:

The short version is that I started over the way I had initially and all my apps downloaded automatically!
Thanks again for the help.
Is anyone else having this issue? I only use one calendar and for some reason all my events are multiplied by 4 and I just have a feeling it's going to get worse. Does anyone have a fix for this. Running fully stocked.

Nope. Work.

Have the same thing going on with my work email, removing the account and readding it fixes it for a couple hours then it does it again. Also my contacts are multiplying.

Damn! Just looked at my contacts. Not good. It's almost like a mirror effect going on. I have a bad feeling it's just going to keep doubling until I have no room. I wonder if backup assistance is causing the problem?

I'm not using backup assistant, figured it was happening to me from a couple dirty flashes, but if you are running stock then that's not the case.

I had a similar problem on my Incredible because I have multiple Google accounts that have access to each other's calendars, so it would show all my events 2 and 3 times. Check your calendar settings and make sure it only shows one occurrence for each calendar name. Hope that helps.

I've been looking for a setting option like that for the last hour. Are you sure it exists on this phone? If so, I'd be grateful for your direction.
I deleted my corporate email and added it again. I'm no longer syncing contacts that's for sure.

There are 2 places to look...
First, go under settings -> Accounts and sync. Check each account to see if "Sync Calendar" is checked.
Second, at the top of the calendar app main screen, hit the "Calendars" button. This will give you a list of available calendars to display. Mine has:
My Calendar = checked
My Tasks = checked
[email protected] with an arrow to expand showing my calendar (checked) and US holidays (unchecked)
[email protected] with an arrow to expand showing my calendar (checked), [email protected] (UNchecked), and US holidays (unchecked)
Show birthday with an arrow to expand showing "Contacts' birthdays" which is checked.
I left my other gmail accounts off this phone since I check them enough from work.
The problem I ran into on my Inc was from having my badseed767 calendar checked on 3 different accounts. Once I unchecked it on the extra accounts, it only showed up once.
Hope this helps.
No, but I appreciate the attempt. I was hoping there really was a way to ignore "same name" events. I had found the calendars menu and made sure only one of each account was checked and it was still multiplying everything. Then again it might have been too late since the events already multiplied. So this is what I did.
Deleted the email account. Joined all my contacts that could be combined. Setup the corporate email again and only synced the calendar and email. Went into calendar as you suggested above and made sure that only one corporate email was checked, then synced. So far no duplicates.

Sounds positive. I'm curious, do you have the Google sync thing running on a pc that syncs outlook to Google? Also, can you give us so insight on the exchange server? Curious if those having issues are imapi or pop3 configured etc.

Well... I honestly don't know. I'm new to Samsung/TWiz phones for the most part and I'm still trying to find my way around through all the settings.
As for Google being synced to Outlook, no, not intentionally at least. The only syncing I've done with Google has been on my phones. Hell, if I didn't have a phone, I'd never even look at gmail.
If I was on my HTC phone, I'd be able to answer your question on the server. Is there a way for me to see that somewhere in the settings? Haven't found it yet. If not, I'll try setting my phone up on my wife's phone(my old Rezound). However, I love to know where I can find that if it's an option.
EDIT: I can't find your answer. It's a corporate email if that helps.

Well, my plan didn't work. Events doubled. This is starting to drive me crazy!

I've been lurking on xda-dev for a while and finally have a question but can't post in the development section. My apologies in advance if posting here is poor etiquette.
I've been running Bean's Custom Stock Rom Build 9. I'm not receiving GMail notifications and have to manually refresh GMail to receive new messages. I am also having an issue with Google Talk. It appears as if I am not signed in and cannot communicate with any of my Google Talk contacts. I read every page of the build thread and saw that users had Google Talk issues that were fixed in Build 8, but I haven't seen any mention of GMail notification issues or Talk issues in Build 9. All other notifications work fine. Maybe I just need to wait and listen, but any help is much appreciated.
Try going to settings > accounts and sync > and making sure that gmail sync is checked for all your emails

That was one of the first options I checked. Checked and unchecked sync. Made sure notifications are enabled. GMail doesn't have a sync frequency option/push setting that can be changed like with other email accounts.

For anyone who had this issue with Build 9, Build 10 was released tonight and fixed both my GMail and Google Talk issues.

A friend of mine just purchased the S3 a few days ago. Today they checked their data usage and they are already at 850 mb of data. So I told them to check what apps were the culprit. As it turns out, it was the Gallery. So we figured out that it consumed all of that data while doing the initial sync that synced all of their Picasa Web albums with the Gallery. So we went in to the Account settings and disabled Picasa Sync all together. I should also add that they are not on Google+ and therefore the Google+ Instant Upload feature is not on.
So I am wondering if there is any way that I can set Picasa to sync only on wifi. Is it something easy and I am just missing it?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I dont know what you mean, are you trying to avoid manually syncing on wifi? You can just turn on picasa photo sync and wifi at the same time then I guess.

Thanks for your reply. I would like to leave Picasa Sync on in the background, but only have it sync while on wifi, instead of on my mobile data.
I just went into my Google account settings in my phone to check if the new sync app data feature was implemented already and noticed that across all of my Google accounts I have linked to my phone most of my syncs were unchecked (including my Gmail sync and calender) just thought I would inform you guys in case some rely on the gmail notification for work related tasks or what not, since when I checked sync I had 11 missed gmail notifications.
I had same issue,I noticed my daily gmail hadn't come through today checked my accounts sync and all were unchecked, rechecked and all was well

Hm, I don't seem to have this problem.
I didn't have this issue either, strange.
Either way, I felt like it was worth everyone to check just in case
