[Attention To Android Developers at Play Store]Google to retire Checkout - Android General

Google has announced that its Checkout service is to be abandoned as of 20 November 2013. It's focussing on payments for non-physical goods and shipping other providers off to third parties, signalling a surrender to PayPal and Amazon Payments. It's another example of Google building a product and orphaning users. What's worse - it's gonna cost you. Google has developed what amounts to a corporate social responsibility product that is a huge benefit to, especially, very small businesses. Now, having encouraged reliance on it, it's kicking them in the most tender region.

Will Motorola always have an edge

Now that Google is buying Motorola anyone think Motorola device will have an edge in terms of compatibility and/or performance? I know I will look harder at the Motorola product next time I get a tablet.
No. Google isn't like Apple... Google isn't a money hungry giant. Proof of this, just ask yourself "How many Google services do I pay for?" Your answer? None.
They aren't bias and one-sided either. Knowing Google, they will just use this to improve Android and their Nexus line, and Motorola's devices as well.
Google already said that this isn't going to effect Android in a bad way, but only make it stronger.
"We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android. The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to 'protect competition and innovation in the open source software community' and it is currently looking into the results of the Nortel auction. Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies."
"This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences."
Google says this was a way to strengthen Android and their fight to defend it from MS and Apple. If you look at the responses from HTC, Samsung, LG, and Sony Ericson, they also think this was only a move to help Android.
The quotes are from DroidForums.
i love how all the apple kids are saying that google is now just like apple. i dont see google firing patent lawsuits over everyones bow...

That's because they are ignorant and don't understand why Google did what they did.
actually, google is as money hungry as apple...except google's business model is in ads. the more appliances using google's ads, the more money google makes. this is why it is in google's interest to keep the android platform as lawsuit free as possible. by giving away free operating system that uses googe services, the better it is for google.
thankfully for us consumer, google's business model is actually pro-sumer as well (assuming you don't mind all the information gathering and stuff ). the way google makes money involves free (more like ad-supported), quality software for us.

It's all a guessing game now. Only time will tell. No matter what they say.

How To Earn Revenue From Free Apps Without Ads

I currently have quite a few apps on the Android ans IOS Markets. Some make money and some don't. If your anything like me you do not have the time to market every app in hopes that they will go viral.
Why not sell the source code to an internet marketer. We all know that there is no shortage of these professionals, but most internet marketers cannot develop apps.
The model like that of selling eBooks. I bet you less than half of the eBooks on Click Bank were actually written by the person who has it listed in Click Bank.
I have sold apps to a few businesses and individuals in the past, but I have to market my development services to them which takes time and money.
This lead to the idea of a marketplace for apps. They have auction sites for just about anything in the world but non for app source codes. A real auction where biders can drive up the price on one another for rights to the app source code.
I believe this model will be more profitable for independant or smal firm developers than simply marketing their development services.
1. No Advertising Costs
2. Multiple buyers for one product drives the price up
3. Much Larger target demographic
4. Increased downloads from increase number of app views
5. You don't have to sell unless you get the price you want (reserve price)
If you are a developer and looking to increase your revenue, you should strongly consider this model.

Hi guys, have you ever considered to sell your source code on chupamobile.com?
It could help you to monetize from your works, and buy ready made components and source code to save time and money for your works.
Let me know what do you think about that.

French Court Fines Google $660,000 for Offering Free Maps

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2399755,00.asp
A French Court this week ordered Google to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to a French mapping company for stifling competition by offering its Google Maps service for free.
Bottin Cartographes, which offers map services to businesses for a cost, filed an unfair competition complaint against Google France and its parent company Google, arguing the Web giant was engaging in anticompetitive practices by providing free mapping services. The Paris court on Tuesday upheld the compliant, ordering Google to pay 500,000 Euros ($660,000) in damages and interest to Bottin Cartographes along with a 15,000 ($20,000) Euro fine, according to an AFP report.
The ruling was the culmination of a two-year legal battle for Bottin Cartographes.
"We proved the illegality of (Google's) strategy to remove its competitors ... the court recognized the unfair and abusive character of the methods used and allocated Bottin Cartographes all it claimed," Bottin Cartographes' lawyer, Jean-David Scemmama, told the AFP. "This is the first time Google has been convicted for its Google Maps application."
However, a Google France spokesman told the AFP that the company is planning to fight the ruling.
"We will appeal this decision," the spokesman said. "We remain convinced that a free high-quality mapping tool is beneficial for both Internet users and websites. There remains competition in this sector for us, both in France and internationally."
This is not the first time Google has run into legal trouble in France. Last March, France's data privacy regulator handed the Internet company a 100,000 Euro fine for collecting private information as part of its Street View service.

The judge is obviously corrupt or biased towards France local products only
What a blatant load of tosh.

fukin french people have nothing better to do
@redline06 : you don't know how much you are true...
I hope Google will win in appeal, because if it doesn't this would be a really bad thing for us...
I agree with the court. I mean really, why should I be able to use a free topographical program when there are FAR more inferior ones for me to buy =D
/trolling sarcasm
Everything isn't as obvious as it seems.
This is likely another move to give Google flak for the mapping methods used, which most know range from typical [cringe] satellite Surveillance to the more intrusive road-level Surveillance.
The street level Surveilance has put a lot of folks, particularly in eastern EU up in arms over privacy, sometimes to the point of roadblocking Google vehicles out of entire cities.

next France postal service will sue Google over gmail for delivering messages free and faster
i see.i don't understand very much
How this was allowed to go and stay in trial for so long is insane...if this allowed then I'm sure some navigation companies in the US will start suing as well.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Can phone companies sue Google for offering free calls in the U.S?
Totally bonkers. Europe is the only place in the world that punishes companies for being good at what they do. To succeed in Europe you have to sell a piss-poor product at ridiculous prices so that the bureaucrats leave you alone.
If you can't compete, cripple the opposition.
I don't know if it's same for whole europe, but French enterprise don't like free concurrency...
I didn't knew Bottin Cartograph before, but they should do the same against other free cartography sites like Mappy, or attack the french operator SFR for providing a free GPS app to its subscribers ?
....
No good deed goes unpunished. I'd advise them to not pay the fine, pull outta France, and see what happens...Google will have them by the balls in no time
$660,000? That's google's pocket change! Lol
But in all seriousness the fact that they are fining google, just shows how damn stupid they are.
Google could KILL them, easily.

I hope Google will win in appeal
Has anyone ever seen a whole country get the banhamma? Cause I think we are about to.

WhatsApp is now free and promises to stay ad-free

WhatsApp is dropping its subscription fees to access the popular messaging service. WhatsApp introduced the fees a few years ago, forcing new users to pay an annual 99 cents subscription after the first year. “As we’ve grown, we’ve found that this approach hasn’t worked well,” admits WhatsApp in a company blog post today.
“Many WhatsApp users don’t have a debit or credit card number and they worried they’d lose access to their friends and family after their first year. So over the next several weeks, we’ll remove fees from the different versions of our app and WhatsApp will no longer charge you for our service.”
...........
Recode reports that if you’ve already paid the 99 cents for the year then there won’t be a refund, but subscription fees will cease immediately.
.....................
WhatsApp isn’t planning to enable third-party ads within the service, and it’s sticking to its original principles. The founders of WhatsApp were strongly opposed to ads, noting back in 2012 that “when advertising is involved you the user are the product.”

Yes, even thought we could( whatsapp.cm )use whatsapp freely now. They will get money from other methods.
They will be hard pressed to really make money on it. As they stated. Most of their users have no way of paying for it. Most people that use it are younger or in a developing country. Any chance they had was lost when FB bought them and lost a huge amount of users.
