As for independent traveling, a good guide may be of a great use, for example such as Tour Guide to Thailand. I've had a look at most of the free city guides and they are generally pretty average, large 200meg downloads, bad maps and lots of bloat. However i am sure there are some gems out there. However since you are not going to have data some of these guides, (pocket , mtravel etc could be usefull)
As a previous poster mentioned trip advisor is the king of the hill for places to visit etc. An up and comer is stay.com which lets you create a customised guide and download it to your phone including an offline map.
If you decide to get a country specific sim for data vi highly recomend Öffi - Public Transport Buddy for public transport around europe
and kayak or tripit to manage your iteniery
Haha - this thread got bumped from several months ago, I've already done my trip (it was amazing) and ended up being very surprised by the availability of free wifi. Didn't end up needing any apps really, although there was one that had the marine forecast for the Mediterranean which was helpful since we were sailing.

Today I would like to introduce you my weather application (Weather Online) that I'm developing since eight months in my free time. The idea of such an application came from a personal need to know the detailed weather over several days to a specific point anywhere in the world.
Indeed, in addition to accurate weather for a specific point, such an application can be very useful when you want to go on weekend or holiday, by giving us an idea about the kind of clothes to take or outright if it is not better to cancel the stay, etc., and thus avoid surprises once there.
