I recently got a tf300t which came already with 10.4.2.17 JB firmware.
At the moment I'm not plannig to install custom ROMs basically because I understand that I should unlock the bootloader and lose the warranty doing so.
The device is notifying that an update (the .18 firmware, I guess) is available, but before upgrading I want to be sure that in the future I will able to unlock the bootloader and then install custom ROMs.
Can someone please reassure me about it?
I'm sorry if this sounds as a dumb question, but I'm pretty new to this tablet and in the past I lost the ability to gain root access for another device beacuse of an OTA update.

If you're already on 10.4.2.17, upgrading to 10.4.2.18 won't affect your ability to unlock. Some people (like myself) are unable to unlock for unknown reasons, but upgrading from .17 to .18 shouldn't make a difference(10.4.2.18 doesn't really change much). If you're able to unlock, you should be able to do it on either .17 or .18. If you're unable to unlock, you then wouldn't have been able to do it on either version.

Thank you for your answer.
This inability to unlock somewhat scares me.
Is this connected in someway to the production date of the device (which maybe could retrieved from the serial number)?

I'm not sure, I know I and several others have been unable to unlock. There are various theories as to why (ASUS unlock server problems, serial number not in their database, certain serial numbers don't work, etc...). Worst case scenario is that when you try to unlock, it gives you the error "Unknown error occurs, which may be a network connection issue. please wait and try again later" and nothing happens. Personally, I'm pretty sure my problem has to do with the fact that the serial number in settings is different from the one on the bottom of the tablet (the one on the sticker). Unfortunately for me, there is no way to change the internal serial number without being rooted, and no way to root on JB (for now) without being unlocked.

Hi guys, I have the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity TF700T U.S. version. Would someone be willing to assist me in unlocking the bootloader? Currently its on the latest JB firmware V10.4.4.23. I hate to ask considering there are threads here already about unlocking, however it seems those threads are about unlocking the bootloader while still on ICS.
I appreciate any advice.
1. Download the unlock app from http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS+Transformer+Pad+Infinity+TF700T Ignore the fact that the webpage still says that it only works on ICS; many people have successfully unlocked on JB.
2. Run it (and do not turn off any internet connection, you need it)
3. Read carefully, accept the license, read carefully again, check "agree" and push the button
4. Hope that Asus' server that should send the unlock token works

Go here:
http://www.asus.com/Tablets_Mobile/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_TF300T/#support_Download_32
Go to utilities, download the unlock app V8 on your device, install and follow instructions. Be aware! No more warranty (depending on your location, mine was still under warranty after bricking mine flashing the wrong bootloader!), so make sure what you are doing after unlocking it. Read. After you think you've read it all, read a bit more! There are a lot of manuals out here to explain everything to you, but make sure that what you read is applicable to YOUR situation. I went wrong by installing a 4.0 bootloader after updating to 4.1. Installed the wrong CM, wiped and was bricked. So read, and read some more Good luck!
Oh, and after you've done all the reading and read some more, and you've decided that all you actually want is root access, you can go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187982
It will explain you how to install TWRP on 4.2!!!! only!!!
After that, you can follow the rest of the info to get root or use TWRP for installing a custom ROM (like CROMI)!
Again, good luck
You can't load CM10.1 from the JB4.2.1 bootlader. They are not compatible. So that will be a fruitless task. Only CROMI and Energy Roms are compatible with the new bootloader right now.

Here we go!
Please prepare your device carefully. Deactivate your Google account firstly. Your device should be registered at the Asus server. If there are any issues, search the thread for "unlock"!
I've been trying to unlock for a couple of days. No luck though it keeps telling me there could be a network issue. I've read a few places that it's because the device isn't registered. When i try to register the device it tells me that it should already be under 'My Products' . I assume someone has already registered the serial. Though if its already registered then my device should unlock. I've contacted support hopefully they can get it registered properly then I can run the unlocker. If anyone has had any experience with this before please let me know. Thanks
I've been in contact with Asus support and they have sync's my device to their server with the MAC and Serial. The unlocker still doesn't work for me. Says network error. They asked if the motherboard has been changed. I don't think it has, but perhaps as it's the CN(China) version it won't unlock. Does anyone know a way to unlock without Asus unlocker?

Nope! There is no other way.
The trick is to factory reset the tablet, DO NOT GIVE IT A GOOGLE OR GMAIL ACCOUNT, then run the unlock tool! Good luck!
I have unlocked the TF300TG executing the unlocker tool v8 after removing the google account from tablet (without rebooting) with internet active.

Just doing a factory reset now. Asus support suggested that it could have been a MoBo change if there was an issue before, therefore the serial I gave them to activate/sync the tablet with their system would be invalid.

UPDATE: Same thing "unknown netowrk error". I guess i'm unable to sync this tablet with Asus server.
Is there another way to unlock the device without the unlocker tool?
Can't install any other ROMS or Google Play Store on this CN version, its making the tablet useless.

Did you provide to Asus the current SN of the devise? .
Please open Settings ->Status and pick up there the current SN and try the whole process again. Keep in mind there is no other way to unlock the bootloader.
Yes I provided them with the serial number (sticker on outsid of device). Also the serial number in Settings->Status. Also the MAC address in status. an App called King Root seems to have rooted the device.
I'm trying to get the play store working too.
Also Asus explained that the serial in status is not a valid one. I tried registering it myself andit does say that teh serial is invalid. only on the one on the ouside sticker is valid.
update: looks like it could be to do with being a refurbished unit, the serial starts with C2NK and does not register as valid. I found a thread about an ASUS Zenbook that serial starts with C4N0 and they were unable to register their device either.

Thanks for your help, but I think it's the refurb that is the issue, Serial number of the motherboard is not recognised by support or the asus website.

Please keep in mind the current SN of YOUR Tablet is the number shown in "Settings -> Status" not on the sticker. So you have to register your tablet on Asus website like a new one after exchange MB. Seems you never did.
PS:
※Version V8_For Android 4.2 only works with TF300T 4.2 JB of TW,US,WW CN SKU. It won’t work on other devices.
Thanks for your help.
Yes I tried to register with that serial, it's unrecognised by the website and by the support team.
I read another post somewhere who has the same issue, both our serial numbers start with a similar sequence of letters.
Another user suggested this can be when a service center that Asus use - use a different unofficial manufactured part. This would be why Asus do not recognise the serial number. I bought my device refurbed so I guess this has happened to mine.
Reference:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/cannot-register-with-asus.673127/
:good:
Hence I need a different unlocking method. Which seems one isn't available.
Does anyone know how to get the play store working? Without unlocking? Root only?
Perhaps I need to somehow change the serial number like this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243521
I don't quite understand how to do this on my TF300t though.

You are welcome! However using the "Thanks" button is also greatly appreciated.
Your issue is really confusing. To clear it up I would like to recommend to you to write an email to Asus Support in order to report your issue. Provide the WiFi MAC address and the current SN (Settings -> Status ->SN) of your device. Ask them to be so friendly to unlock your device. In general it takes a few days and hopefully your tablet will be unlocked.
Yes I have done exactly that. They were very helpful over several days of communication. They told me the details are invalid even in the screenshot I sent, and that they suspect a repair on the mb or swap was done.
I've found several posts with this issue in fact with a different model.
Thanks for trying. If someone knows how to change the serial number on my device that's be great, it seems doing that may fix the issue. Some users have had success using ratchet (from my earlier post https://github.com/AndroidRoot/Ratchet/blob/master/ratchet.c)
I got this tablet from my work. I'm trying to unlock the bootlaoder but no sucess... Might asus servers has been down? This tablet's from 2012, so I don't except thaht kind of services/apps using network to unlock/register are working by now?
I read on this thread to remove google account / hard reset the tablet. It didn't helped.
If anyone has somthing to try, i will. May ADB/Fastboot command will help?
From what I have read, the answer is no but I have some more questions so I guess Id ask anyway.
Transformer was very expensive and I have more than a year of warranty left. On the other hand I would very much like some of the features that require root. What action is possible to roll back? Unlocking, rooting or flashing a custom rom? I need to unlock the device before I can root it right?
I would use a number of features that rooting allows, but my main desire is to be able to use keyboard dock and mouse or even a gamepad as game controllers. Only program that can do that (joy2touch) requires root. But if I had root I guess I would try Cyanogenmod too because I can only see people praising it for how greatly it improves experience.
Also, there is lots of information around here but its still not dumb enough for someone who just wants to root a device but has no idea where to start (its pretty confusing). So sorry in advance for possibly asking obvious questions.

If you just want root to use joy2touch, then your warranty is still good. If you unlock your device, then your warranty is voided... you can find more information about unlock and root here.

Yes but, there is rooting for either unlocked devices or devices running ICS or lower. And whatever rooting for JB I found (im running newest OTA) is only for unlocked devices as well. A rooting is allowed you to access your system files so you can modify them as will. A unlocking is allowed you to install custom rom and recovery. Someone else may have a better explaination for you.
No, you still can root your device if you have a bootloader .8 or earlier. If you have the latest bootloader, you can downgrade and root it..

Rooting exploits a bug in the kernel, not in the bootloader, so it's the ROM/kernel build 10.6.1.14.8, not the bootloader build. But it's always the same on locked devices anyway.
Uhm... you are confusing me even more. So is there a rooting guide that doesnt involve unlocking, can be reverted or doesnt void warranty, and works with newest stock OTA?
To my knowledge I dont have any kind of bootloader.

Thanks _that. What I meant is the latest firmware from Asus.
@3DeX
1. Download the Asus firmware 10.6.1.14.8
2. Backup your personal data and everything that you like to keep to your computer or your external SD.
3. Make sure that your battery is full so it is not shutdown during the installing process..
4. Unzip it once because there is another zip file insde it.
5. Copy the second zip file to the root directory of your internal SD.
6. Reboot your tablet.
7. After reboot, you will see the downgrade notification in the lower right corner.
8. Click on the downgrade notification and follow the instructions.
9. During the installing process, Do not try to turn it off. It will reboot by itself when the installation is completed. It may take 2 to 3 minutes..
10. Use motochopper to root your device.
Good luck..

Why do you think so? Bootloader can be unlocked via Developer settings, and I think there is no special magic preventing this device from rooting.
I would try rooting it by flashing some SuperSU zips or something like that, but I didn't try it yet
Has anyone checked this out? I haven't purchased a Nokia 3.1 but am considering it. I went so far as to create a Nokia account and there is a bootloader unlock apk, as well as an unlock.key that can be downloaded, and there are clear instructions on the Nokia page itself.. Since I don't have the phone, I did not attempt to proceed. However, if the 3.1 qualifies (I don't see why it wouldn't) then getting root should be as easy as following Magisk instructions.
There is even a page for the open source releases.
If I were to get the 3.1, my main objective would likely be to just obtain root. Looks like it should be doable.
Edit - well over 100 views since I posted this but no one has tried to unlock and/or root. I thought that was the purpose of this thread.

That is unfortunate! Perhaps, does activating Developer Options allow to select OEM Unlocking and USB Debuging, then running the Unlocking App? To run step 5 of 5 (see NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS below) you would need to have USB Debugging enabled anyway. Nowhere in the instructions is that mentioned.
FYI - Activate Developer Options: Go to Settings>About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times. Back out to access Developer Options.
Also, I do not have this phone but am interested in it. I cannot confirm if any of the advice I am giving will work, but it is what I would try.
NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS
Introduction
Firstly, we need to validate that the phone you would like to unlock is operated by you. There are a few steps to this, so we ask that you carefully follow all instructions. Let’s get started.
To participate, simply complete the following steps:
1. Please download the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app. You can download the apk from this link and install the apk on your device. If you don’t understand how to install an apk on your device, please do not unlock the bootloader on your device. Doing so will void your phone's warranty and may cause irreparable damage.
2. Launch the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app and fill your email information and click “Submit”.
3. The app will display a code. Please enter this in the form below along with your email address. Then press "Request to Unlock"
Your bootloader can now be unlocked. Follow the instructions below:
Step 1/5
Check the email you entered during registration. You should receive an email with a message as follows:
Hi, Thanks for requesting the unlocking bootloader. Please download your unlock key from the following link. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Download the unlock key and save it as “unlock.key”.
Step 2/5
Power off your device. Once powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button.
Step 3/5
While keeping the Volume Down button pressed, connect the device to the computer via USB cable. The device will boot into “Download mode”. If you have difficulty, try powering up normally, power off the device again and start back from Step 1.
Step 4/5
Download the following fastboot binary for your OS here.
Step 5/5
Open a command prompt:
Windows: Start > cmd
Mac: Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app
Linux: Terminal
Navigate to the directory where the previously downloaded unlock.key file is saved. Then enter the following commands:
fastboot flash unlock unlock.key
fastboot oem unlock
If successful, you should see the below message:
Unlock success!
Then reboot the device by entering the following command:
fastboot reboot
You are done!
It doesn't work either way. I tried with both those options enabled and disabled but the program always crashes. It's interesting to note that the app itself fails to install through chrome or "Files" app. Gives an error saying "Can't open app". I only managed to install it through ES File Explorer. Could it be because of I bought the phone on a Vodafone store? I can't find the original stock rom to flash, sadly.

I have been researching this and have found that, as of this writing, only the Nokia 8 qualifies for bootloader unlocking. See here. The only thing holding me back from jumping on this Nokia 3.1 is the inability to unlock the bootloader (and maybe the lack of fingerprint sensor.) Hopefully it gets "approved soon".
Currently the oem unlock using the Nokia bootloader unlock only works for Nokia 8

It doesn't matter if you have enabled "OEM unlocking" option in Developer settings, currently Nokia doesn't allow unlocking of bootloader and thus rooting device, unless you are Nokia 8 user. You can try this, but it will crash almost for sure.
As far as I can tell, my bootloader is unlocked. I am a noob of course, but I have been researching this topic for a couple of months now. I could be mistaken in thinking "upload" mode is it, but I can't seem to figure out the difference. Otherwise, I don't know what to do next.

To get to "Upload" mode? Assuming it's the same for the 3.1 Plus-maybe I should have specified that-holding power button and volume up during startup will open "Upload" mode.
You can also use adb with the command "reboot bootloader." For that reason, I think it's the bootloader, but I could be wrong.
Sorry if I was a bit misleading and it is totally different on the Nokia 3.1, I was just some kinda hopeful to actually see people talk about it.

I'm not bringing any sizable programming skills to the table unless somebody wants to teach me real fast.
Hopefully, I bring tidings of great joy. So I got two these Nokia's and they're both locked. to the carrier, Cricket. I suspect they are at least unlawfully locked. . My understanding is you can't lock to used phone especially if it's been sold as a prepaid phone. I believe this falls under the reseller flex policy. I bought it off of eBay from a guy that sells nothing but phones and he's been extremely cagey about what he'll admit to, so I called the carrier. I literally waited an hour and a half on the phone because I am falling asleep and I was on a computer speaker phone so it kept on the time of the call. I only held that long because I had fallen asleep. Anyway since I'm not in a cricket or AT&T customer then don't plan to eitherbe they could care less about me it actually told me they didn't have any information on the phone after I gave them the IMEI number.
My guess is the fcc's not going to do much because it's a trump Administration. So I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Nokia and well at least they're interesting I think Microsoft paid between 7 and 12 billion to acquire them I recently sold them off for like a box of jujyfruits. Anyway they're committed to customer service so I figure my predicament might give me an in there.
So those unlock codes that it was a link earlier in the post for that's just to unlock the bootloader, right? You know this is a pretty decent phone for a low-end guy I got the newer 3.1 C it's got Cricket's bootloader in bloatware on it,
takes up a ton of space.
I mean it probably won't happen but if Nokia ever goes public again - I think the acquiring companies. Their eye on the prize and they're going to kick some ass. So I'm all in on this let's get this done. If you want I can see what I can do about asking Nokia 4 whatever it's going to take just to keep me a satisfied customer since they know Cricket/ATT isn't following the Obama regs.
Oof... It would be beautiful if Nokia customer support could guide us onto rooting this phone.
its so simple to unlock oem on nokia 3.1 plus. no third app needed. after developer option on -> go to developer option setting -> there is toggle button to on/off developer option , just use that toggle to off it and on it -> press yes for on dev options -> and select oem unlock. that all
It is pretty straightforward once you have unlocked bootloader (not by Nokia). If you want, you can simply dump boot_a or boot_b with SPflash tool, patch in Magisk app, and reflash.
Otherwise you can use my TWRP (NO TOUCH, and has disabled dm-verity). Please note it's only working on build v3.180, updates not supported - as it was only needed for my project.
