I don't think this thread was really necessary, but that's just my opinion though if that's okay. Maybe you should change the title to include audio comparison.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

[Q] Three months with Nexus S, still no 720p recording?

It seems that the general consensus is that Nexus S' lack of 720p recording is NOT a hardware limitation, but rather, the lack of a codec which Google didn't pay for.
So, how come nobody at XDA was able to hack it on? It's been three months already.... is there any hope the Nexus S will get 720p recording soon?
Thanks...

Where is this the consensus? Swetland himself posted it was a soc clock rate limitation when supercurio asked. There is continued speculation that it could be possible, but it lacks the external image processing component that the sgs requires to do 720p.
Personally I think the only hope is going to be similar to that of the nexus one, a software workaround at a lower fps.

The only way it will happen is if Charansingh's mod for CM on the n1 is ported to CM for the NS...
Fingers crossed

Yep.
The hardware seems to be there. Google just did not bother with providing the software.
It is not a hardware problem but rather a bandwidth problem possibly because the implementationon nfc,how ever this can worked around with software

Well, it's been three months... if the XDA can't figure it out, I doubt anyone can...
Just because there hasn't been a work around released yet doesn't mean no one is working on it,there are many amazing devs out there I'm sure someone is doing something.

I thought it was a hardware limitation, and that Google had sacrificed both 720p recording and SD storage expansion in favor of the NFC module.

micro USB to HDMI

I have a Vibrant, and I just convinced my buddy to get a Galaxy S 4G and he loves it. I keep seeing threads floating around the vibrant forums about Micro-USB to HDMI.
Now from what I understand the Galaxy S 2 is able to do this, but from what I've read, there is not much of a difference between the hardware of the SGS2 and the Vibrant and SGS4G. From what I've read, theres something thats blocking it from working on SGS4G and the Vibrant thats enabled in the SGS2.
heres a few threads on the idea..
-> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973789
another idea. -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11366461&highlight=kernel#post11366461
if anyone could get this enabled in the coding, it would be probably one of the sickest developments in the hacking of the SGS phones. not to mention theres a few bounties on here. people are willing to donate for such an amazing thing. including me!
This would be quite a development for us Galaxy S 4G owners. Especially if all we need to do is flip a switch or two in the kernel .config file.
But it is stated here that it is just for the Galaxy S2.

ahh see its been said that "only galaxy s2 can" buttt its also been said that the SGS was supposed to be able to do it and samsung decided to disable it so that the SGS2 could be the "first"
these all could be speculations. But like I said in 1st post, it's been said that all the hardware is pretty much the same (minues of course a few things). But apparently everything hardware wise related to this is the same and its disabled in the kernel. How amazing would it be! gahh

What that does is it gives you video and audio thru the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
its a cord like this LINK
I picked one up and its cool but the resolution and clarity is terrible coming thru that little jack. Although its neat to have

my tv in my room is a 1080p 32' insignia and the one in the living room is a old 55' projector big screen still though it doesn't look bad and is good to watch movies with but like I said i is definitely not HD.
I just use a radio shack 3.5-vga camcorder a/v cable and swap the red and yellow plugs. It works great. No its not HD but its perfectly watchable quality. Of course if the source video is sketchy its going to look even worse on the big screen. But try it with a decent video source and it looks pretty good. I use it all the time to watch stuff from my phone. Give it a shot.

Information regarding upcoming Nexus Prime Leaks [Update]

Hey guys, not long ago there had been reports regarding an anonymous user having the opportunity to try out a Nexus Prime beta unit and he reported the information on the net. Here are the details.
http://www.seednonym.com/2011/09/information-regarding-upcoming-nexus.html
The reliability of the information is rather solid itself, as it was Samsung itself who granted the "anonymous" the test unit.
Let me know what you guys think. Thank you. The information may not be precise, hence read it with a pinch of salt.
Update 1: Accordingly current Exynos chipsets do not support LTE and the Nexus Prime is unlikely to be 3G only. Most predictions are pointing towards TI OMAP4460 bundled with PowerVR SGX544.
Rumors and rumors, an anonymous 4chan user
lol 4chan has zero credibility from everything I hear.
i think it is just a rumor again. Just wait to November when Samsung/Google release it :d
haha yeah, just that the rumour sounds too true to be rumour, i've decided to share it with you guys.
First post updated.
you can't believe anything from 4chan, there's no solid proof
also if they did had it on hand, why they couldn't even snap a picture of the phone, huh?
LOL at least they could have photoshop one to make it more believable
Prime will be using omap chip as confirmed since day 1. Don't know when exynos rumor began?

i'd prefer Google/Motorola to make the next Nexus. Probably going towards that way anyhow.
Also would prefer Google/HTC make this bad boy...like they did for the N1.

Although I'd like to see the same, Samsung does tend to have much better hardware. It doesn't really matter who makes it though because it'll still have stock Android on it.
The folders and ease of use of the device, sounds a lot like the Droid Bionic.

Disappointed.. :(

Just received my Nexus 5 and am quiet disappointed with it.
The sound is OK, not as loud as my S3 but OK
The screen is very nice, but quiet a lot of display is used by the 'buttons'
Comparing side by side to the S3, the S3 seems to display more page.
Anyone have any comments or thoughts on this ?
Any way to get access to more of the screen without rooting it ?
Thanks

Its a nexus device, did you realize that nexus devices do not have hardware buttons before you bought it?
Not much you can do without root.
But if you do decide to root (use the guide in my signature) you can use pie controls or install a custom ROM/xposed module which will allow you to change the size of the navbar.

I was unhappy about the sound aswell, I rooted purely to install a sound mod that increases the volume greatly, and it doesn't have any distortion problems at all, see here.

PROS:
It's a decent price
It gets updates quick
It's fast
Camera takes decent pics in as long as nothing is moving
Design is good
CONS:
The cameras slow focus makes it next to impossible to take pictures of my new puppy.
The sound seems fine to me for speaker calling, for music not so much but who listens to music like that. I picked up a bluetooth speaker and use that anytime I want to listen to music sounds 10 times better than the speakers on any phone.
The screen size is good, the Galaxys are too big IMO feels like I'm using a mini tablet. I have the white version I don't care for the shiny edges but when my Nexus case comes I won't see them anyways.
My only other gripe other than the camera is I can't get an otterbox for it that's not the phones fault though.
Overall I'm happy with it for the price.

Why? Did you not do any homework at all prior to purchasing this phone? Are you not familiar with Nexus devices at all?
I'm so tired of these people who drop a few hundred bucks and don't even know what they're buying. It's not like the navbar is some kind of huge secret that people are discovering for the first time. It's a fundamental part of the Nexus experience, and there are plenty of other phones you could have purchased that don't have it. Complaining about the navbar on a Nexus phone is like jumping into a pool and then complaining that it made you wet.

Well, there's no need to flame hard, but with all the people complaining about the N5's drawbacks...seriously? On-screen buttons? Remember what forum this is; literally all the ROMs have features to use full Immersive Mode, enable PIE, or decrease button size. Go and have a flashing day.
It's no big deal if you can use PIE or hide it or make it smaller; it's definitely something I can live with. I can't live with the ****ty perf of the S4 or the big big big bezels on the HTC One though. Worth it if you ask me...
@albert_htc these problems can be resolved by flashing custom ROMs and kernels, as well as Mods only if you're familiar with rooting and unlocking your bootloader

The navbar is not a "problem." It's an intentional feature of the device. There are mods you can flash to remove it, but they're not "solving" a problem - they're modifying or removing a feature that was intentionally included in the stock phone.
Once again, this is a standard Nexus feature that has been included in every Nexus phone and tablet that has been released since the Galaxy Nexus. This is not new, and it's not a "problem." The only problem is that there are apparently a bunch of people out there who refuse to educate themselves before plunking down hundreds of dollars on a gadget that is clearly not for them.

Sad but true. We spend $350+ on these phones we expect them to be flawless but sadly that's not the case. But what can we do we might as well unlock it's true potential and tweak them the way we want that's the reason why we chose android over iphone or for me that is

s3 to n5?

I've had my tmo s3 for a little more than a year now and it's still going strong and I like it but I'm thinking of possibly buying a nexus 5. Looking at used ones but also considering possibly getting it brand new from Google. Have any of you upgraded from the s3 to this? Would it be m much of an upgrade? Just wait for another 6 months for the nexus 6?
Aside from possibly the camera...and no SD slot.....yes, a huge upgrade. IMHO.
I just came from my GS3 to the N5 and the difference is night and day. Even with a KitKat rom on my GS3 it isnt nearly as fast and smooth as the N5.
Not to mention N5 roms are nearly bug free.
You do lose the SD card as mentioned above, the camera (I think) is a little better quality.
Battery is way better.
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking I'd wait for the lg g3 but it seems like the g2 is difficult to unlock and root, at least when it has 4.4. I have been using KitKat on my s3 for so long I don't think I could be happy with anything lower. The s3 is good but after I've been using my n7 for a while the Samsung feels slow.

You won't be disappointed with the upgrade. Went from i747 to N5 and everything is so much smoother. Keep your s3 with a proven rom as a backup but don't expect to jump back to it once you feel the difference in speed and reliability of the nexus 5.

"better" is subjective. Samsung cannot make a touchwiz device that doesn't lag. All of us who have had Galaxy devices know this. The s5 is no exception. The OP did not mention the S5. If he wanted an S5, he would have posted this in the S5 forum. Lets try to stay on topic please.

That's exactly why I was looking at the n5 and not the s5. I found a 32gb black nexus for $315 on swappa so it's on its way now. I know the s5 has better stats on paper but it would also ruin any warranty if I rooted it ( samsungs counter). I like experimenting with different roms and I haven't used tpuchwiz for months. I know the n5 isn't exactly new but it's new enough that it should get the next update version of andriod.
I came from the Note 2, which is similar spec to the S3, and here’s what I miss the most:
-Wolfson DAC: With DAC Direct, audio sounded far superior on Note 2 (the reason audiophiles love Samsung phones)
-APT-X Bluetooth Codec: Again, sounds far superior to standard BT audio
-Phase Detection Auto Focus: For fast focus lock. N5 uses contrast detection, which is why it’s slow to focus
-Camera voice commands: Handy when taking photos of the kids / pets etc
-Expandable Storage: I would have liked the option to use my own SD cards, however I have bought a USB OTG SD card reader so this point is moot now
Apart from that I couldn’t be happier with the N5, and am actually happy to be rid of all Samsung’s gimmicks and so called “features”.
So if you haven’t already, go for it!
Another question, I've read that google slightly changed the n5 after complaints about the speaker, is there any way to figure out if my used phone I just bought is one of the originals or a modified one? I know there's nothing I can do either way, just curious.
