[Q] Hardware Repair - No Service - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I smashed the screen on my HTC One XL and am in the process of replacing it. The new screen is installed, all the connectors are inserted correctly, but I haven't put the backplate back on yet.
I know that the screen is working fine, as I can turn the phone on and use the touchscreen. The wifi is also connecting nicely. However, the phone doesn't connect to the phone network and has a 'No Service' error message. It recognises the SIM card, so that's not the problem.
Can anyone suggest what I can do to fix this?

Double check every single one of your connections.

I already have.
But which connection would it be? If I'm not mistaken, the cellular signal antenna is on the same chip as the Wifi. So how can the wifi work without the cellular?

If I'm not mistaken there should be a ton of metal connections on the backplate, maybe one of those is the antenna?

You mean I'd need to install the backplate to get the antenna to work? I can't see anything that looks like an antenna, but it's possible.

That's what I'm thinking. If you didn't miss any of the antenna connectors the only real option is to reassemble the phone and try it.

Yes! It did.
I think the antenna is the contact on the top-right side of the backplate.
Except now the earpiece speaker isn't working.
Anyone have any idea what could be going wrong there?

Help Please!!! MIC problem

Guys,
I am having a problem with my MIC i suppose. The other listner cannot listen/understand properly what I am speaking, I have to repeat it sometimes.
I have tried it with different locations as well, with good coverage as well.
I have put my SIM into my Old nokia, and it works well. But with my sensation, there is some problem. My Sensation has a HongKong warranty and I live in India and have purchased the device from a vendor in Dubai. It is not possible to send it to HK for warranty purposes. Can someone suggest me is it a problem with the MIC or there could be someother problem as well. With the Headphones, it works well. This problem is almost from last 1 month, and I did S-off yesterday only.
NEED YOUR HELP GUYS!!!!
Same Problem here

Anyone know a solution for this?

I can't seem to get any service from my carrier. The phone can get reception/signal, it's just the phone displays No Service from the pull down notifications. And when I go into mobile settings and try to search for a network or anything, It says "Error while searching for networks." Is this the antenna problem? Would I have to open up the phone and adjust something? btw does anyone know where the antenna is located at?

Sounds like a hardware defect or Sim card issue.

I unlocked the sidekick, tried a ATT simcard got good reception like Tmobile, but still no service. Do you know where the antenna is in the sidekick?
Its probally an antena prob because surprisingly I droped my old samsung gravity smart in water by accident and my first thought was to take the battery out and let it dry, that succeeded on letting me turn it on fully but I had no reception what so ever which is odd but this sounds off topic a lil but I ended up bricking it o.o normaly t-mobile themselfs sometimes making horrible phones don't get me wrong their good but most of them are 2.2 froyo ._.

Have you tried using a different Rom? Can you get into your boot loader? If so perhaps try wiping and reinstalling a new Rom if problem persists try another radio and ril. I lost data connection once from flashing a recommended radio for a certain Rom, I restored my connection by finding a generic ICS radio/ril file. I first flashed radio, then matching ril and my data connection returned. You can give this a try before giving up. Use the generic ICS radio /ril combo as they are more apt to work easily. Sometimes it takes trying a few to get the connection correct for your area. I really hope this works for you! It worked for me when my data connection was wiped. I'm hoping it's a simple fix like this. If this does not work the problem MUST be internal. But do give it a try! It very well could work. I wish you the best! Also when getting radio don't forget the ril. Best wishes! Hoping this works for you!

Very poor DBm, asu and WiFi signal after JTAG service.

I just got my phone back from mobiletechvideos JTAG service. Since then, my phone struggles to hold WiFi and 3g. It very rarely pulls 4g. I have tried a factory reset. Also restored my IMEI backup just in case. I have an extra micro sim arriving today. I'm just wondering if I could be missing something simple or is my phone royally screwed?

Sounds like your radio.
They probably updated your baseband to MF1, I'd try to use mb1 firmware to see if that fixes your reception problem.

I did take the phone apart and found that the WiFi connection was loose. I corrected that. I started the phone back up and held the Sim card down in the slot while booting and the phone miraculously got 41asu.....for about 5 minutes and now its holding at a steady 2asu. So, would there definitely be something wrong with the Sim card? Or could the Sim port be going as well? Is there a way to test the Sim connectivity in the phone settings?

The lower the asu the better, in contrast to a higher dbm is a better signal.
2 asu is a pretty strong signal, you should be around -80 dbm.
Edit; Nevermind I mixed it up, a higher asu is better. I still think it's radio related though, but changing your sim card is an easy potential fix.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Well....sim card didn't work. Next I'm going to Odin back to pure stock and see if that helps. I'm starting to think it may be something in the NV items or hardware related. Hope I'm wrong though.

Hi David,
Often times when devices become bricked, it results in your NV items being damaged and causes this problem. Here is a guide that highlights this issue, and will tell you how to remedy the situation.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/"
ugh. I really dont want to go messing around with the NV items if that is the case. Im in the process of flashing with ODIN now. I'll update if that works or not.
What is your IEM Showing?
If its been erased, then ODIN to stock firmware probably won;t fix that,
but, have you check your mobile network setting to see if you are on the correct network?
If you are with Verizon it should be set to CDMA, not GSM.

Software is not intermittent. Hardware can be. You may have a broken or loose antenna cable or connector inside the phone.

Found it!!!!! I took the phone apart one last time and found that one of the antenna contacts was bent and not touching the backplate. I bent it back and I'm getting perfect signal. Thank you guys for the input and feedback!

Hi David,
I'm glad to hear you resolved this issue. This is quite surprising as the S3 is relatively easy to work on internally and we had never had this issue after working on one. I'll take note of this in case it's ever observed in the future. In the mean time, anyone ever having a questions regarding their order, just call us at 657-444-JTAG. Rock on buddy!
