[Q] USA Tablet vs Europ - Asus Transformer TF700

Is there a reason not to buy a tablet in the USA and use it in Europe? is it compatible whit wifi etc.

I live in the UK and I have had my tablet for 8 months now, I bought it on Ebay from the USA and I have never had any problems at all.

They are exactly alike, but check if the tablet work before leaving.

The only difference is the US one is software locked to less wifi channels. You can't see anything above 11 I think.
Obvious you can undo that if you unlock and root or just root.
Other than that they are exactly the same and you can flash the WW firmware on a US one.

From what I've read on here, it sounds like my WW SKU TF700 is possibly better build quality? I have ABUSED this poor thing and it hasn't missed a beat. Thrown around, dropped, run through airports every few weeks, this thing is borderline indestructible imho (the scratches and dents on the back don't look all that great, but I don't care. I care that it works, and it continues to do that just fine!

I, too, have gotten that impression.
Everyone here complaining about build quality and quality control is American. (most got it from Best Buy, as well.) I've heard maybe one or two European users with issues (which is a much more acceptable percentage.). Loose buttons, loose screens, docks breaking the screen, misplaced plastic strips, broken USB ports, broken charger ports... It's all US issues.

I abused it again yesterday, dropped it face down onto a tile floor, nothing broke and it still feels solid.

Looking to buy a Xoom. [Q] about build quality.

Hello.
I'm looking to possibly buy a Xoom this week and I've just got a few questions.
I used to have the iPad 1 but sold it a few months ago to buy an Android slate.
Last week I picked up a really cheap Sony Tablet S. Initial impressions were ok but I just hate the plastic feel of it. When you press the centre of the screen you can feel the hollowness inside. I really miss the solidness of my iPad. Can you good people tell me does the Xoom have the same solid feel as the iPad? Is the back of the Xoom made out of metal?
Second question is about the screen. I've read its not IPS but normal TFT. How would you rate the screen in the tablet?
Third question is about ICS. Has it been released for the United Kingdom yet? That is another issue I have with the Tablet S - ICS has been pushed back to the end of May
I have just ordered the Xoom into my local Argos store. It should be available to pick up this Friday. I'm 50/50 at the moment whether to splash the cash or not.
I really like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but after trying the Tablet S I'm worried it may feel too plasticky as well. I'm looking for solidness like my iPad 1
Cheers.
the xoom feels solid i have the silver wifi 3g version and is aluminum in the back, it feels slightly heavy but its fantastic, reminds me of an ipad

It's a very well-built device, if that's what you mean. I've had mine since Day One in Feb 2011, and I use it daily, it commutes with me every week from Southern to Northern Cali, and I've even brought it along to 3 countries.
What exactly is "solidness" anyway?
Cool thanks.

Really?!
Insults to folks' intelligence aren't a way to win over the users around here.
Listen mate. I used lots of tablets. Ipad, galaxy, toshiba and xoom. Without second thought I would say xoom is the best amongst them all for a very simple reason. It is easy to root and then you get the best ics customized rom ever from eos nightlies builds. I can direct you how should you need to. So go ahead with the xoom

I didn't understand your question whether you were being serious or jokey so I replied in a matter of fact way.
If I have caused offence I apologise.
@wesamothman - thanks for your reply and thanks for your offer, that's very kind of you.
I think I'm almost certain I will buy the Xoom - Roll on Friday!

No problem, then. But the question still remains- what does "solidness" mean (to you, that is)? IOW, do you just care that it doesn't fall apart if you look at it too hard, or if you expect it'll fall every now and then (mine has- never glass down on concrete, but it's my understanding we have Gorilla Glass so it's pretty durable), or ...? I only ask 'cause the aluminum back of your previous iDevice seems to be a selling point for you, but I'm sure some (like me) couldn't care less about it (esp. since I've put on an Incipio back cover on mine) as long as it doesn't break during normal usage.
But when you do buy a Xoom, you should consider unlocking it, then using a Custom ROM on it (I'm partial to the "Team EOS" ones, as I work on their kernels). It'll make your tablet better as they tend to use the latest releases from Google, have modified kernels and are far beyond what you'll get from the carrier (if that applies).

Oh I get what you were asking now. I didn't understand at first.
After using the Tablet S I miss the weight and heft of my original iPad. The aluminium backing of the iPad I supposed helped in giving the tablet a solid premium feel to it. The Tablet S (while being well designed) seems too insubstantial and lightweight. Plus the use of plastic over all the body doesn't chime with me. It feels hollow when you press the screen. Some people might love it because its lighter but to me its a turn off. It feels too much like a toy.
I'm looking forward to getting that substantial feel back with the Xoom

From what I have read it looks like its one of the top Android tablets.
I'm getting it from Argos too this Firday. I ordered it last night for store pickup.
Please update this thread and tell me your impressions when you get it
I'm in same boat except I get mine delivered on Weds. I was pondering whether to get the Samsung tab 7.0 Plus which is 234 quid from Expansys (EU version). I'm a bit worried about the screen, there's conflicting reviews on its quality in terms of viewing angles and contrast levels.
Me too. I have read positive and negative opinions about the Xoom screen.
One of the positives for the Tablet S is that the screen is a nice IPS screen.
Not sure how I'm going to cope after being spoilt by the SGS's AMOLED display.
But yeah, it's confusing how some review sites claim it has good contrast ratio and viewing angles but there are others which state complete opposite?!?
I've just been looking at the Xoom 2 but with no ICS and no way to put custom roms on it I think I'll pass. The screen does look nice though
This review says the Xoom screen is amazing
This one says the contrast ratio is sub standard. I know that there will be variation in measurement but 750:1 and 2000:1 is a huge difference. So who's got the real readings?
It's a matter of personal taste.
I don't think you understand, the Contrast ratio should be a fairly stable constant no matter who measures it (obviously different techniques yield different results) but the above two quoted websites are opposite ends of the scale; from being amazing to below average...

[Q] Acer Liquid Glow E330

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has the Acer Liquid Glow E330? I can't really find much info on here threadwise and there doesn't seem to be a specific section for it (maybe mods could add one).
I bought mine about a month ago and its not bad, but it could be better. Anyone else have any opinion on this phone?

I looking at getting one myself - it looks to be a well specified ICS phone at a reasonable price
I'm worried though that there is very little mention of it online. Most "reviews" date back to February when it was annonced and don't really tell you much. I'm also worried that when I go looking for cases to protect it, I can't find anything (other than generic slip cases, etc).
I'd be very interested in what you have to say about it in the areas of general usability, quality of construction, calls, battery life, stability - all the stuff you only get from people who actually own and use the phone! Oh, and if you found a case supplier, I'd be keen to hear about that too!

For protection cases theres nothing except those pull tab things you find on ebay. ( i ordered one)
the only problem i have with it is the wifi, but that may be because of my router and well its not a well known phone.
As you said the reviews date back to when it was announced and acer already announced a new line of phones so I am not sure if this phone is ever gonna be known to a big public out there....
But in a nutshell: Good phone 4 low price... but keep in mind that it is still a low end phone so sometimes it gets laggy because you're running too many apps, just close them.
bye
and probably acer stop support & upgrade it very quickly

second rom: cm 9.1

Thanks for the replies.
It's a bit curious that there is so little online about these phones. They appear to offer a decent spec for a reasonable price. For me, its ICS, screen resolution, SDHC expansion and replacable battery are the key selling points - I don't think there is any competition at that price. The Expansys website has the phone no. 6 in its popularity stakes (Whatever that means: http://www.expansys.com/acer-liquid-glow-cats-eye-black-234412/); I suppose it suggests they are at least selling some.
Not seeing any cases for it on EBay tends to scare me though - and confirm the thoughts of the poster above that it will have little support :crying: Will we see Jellybean for example? Acer appear to be promoting the Android-rivalling Aliyun operating system in other markets and this doesn't fill me with confidence regarding their commitment into the future.
So, it looks like anyone buying the phone should do so in the knowledge that they will be unsupported in terms of accessories and future updates. Still a tempting spec as-is though

Buying a used TF-700 - things to check

Hello,
I'm looking at buying a TF-700 and there is a guy near me that is selling a used one with the dock for a good price. He only used it for a couple weeks and then switched to something else.
I've been doing a fair bit of reading on them and it seems like there are several build quality issues, but it can be hit and miss.
My questions are:
What are some of the trouble areas that I should be looking for? Light bleeds, loose screen, etc.
How do I check if the bootloader has been unlocked? Will it show "unlocked" while booting?
Thanks for your time.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
When you first turn on the tablet there would be small text on the top left corner saying "this device is unlocked". It appears for about 5 seconds.

I'd be wary due to the fact it hasn't been out that long, and it probably *is* affected by some issue. This guy paid the premium price and now wants to get rid of it? Mmmmhh....
The I/O issue is not something you have to check for -- all units seem to have it, though not all users notice or care.
Light bleeds might be annoying, although I'm not sure I'd send a device back to manufacturer for it. Loose screen would be a definite turn-down, because it seems it carries a relatively high chance of getting worse in time and possibly leads to cracked screens. Bad idea.
Obviously, any signs of heavier use, or being battered (like scratches and dents), and try and check WiFi reception as well -- there are not that much reports on it being really bad, but it might be an issue in isolated cases.
When you get to check the device, reboot it (press the power button and choose Power Off, then press it again after the vibration). Check the upper left corner -- it should say "The Device is Unlocked" if it is.
If it is not, you have a decision to make, since that either means that 1) the original owner never tried to unlock (main question: what firmware is it on? Can it receive OTAs? Is he OK with you trying to unlock?) or 2) he did try to unlock but it didn't work out. The latter case poses no problem in itself *IF* you're not eyeing towards flashing a custom recovery and/or ROM -- the device is perfectly functional running a stock ROM and you can install the stock updates (e.g., to JB) anyway from uSD. It would preclude you from tinkering in-depth, however.
Hmm I have an assumption he might be selling you a TF201 if the price is really low. Familiarize yourself the differences between the 2 tablet, or you can check in settings>about tablet and look for Model number to confirm, should say "ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T". Happy shopping!
Cheers
My guess is...that it's a cheap sale because it's unlocked and it can't be returned for whatever reason.
Hard to say some people like me buy use for a few months then dump...
I'd be extremely cautious about handing out hard earned cash for someone else's junk.
It may have been dropped and fixed or it has some intermittent hardware bugs.
In the least get the original receipt with a date of original sale.
Look for a good S\N on the bottom of the tablet, all the original packaging, cables, working charger... etc.
Chances are even if it is a low price and pretty new you may be out of luck with any warranty.
Good luck.

Extremely good point there. I think we all agree it's risky to say the least. I'm n ot you, obviously, but if I were, I'd save up and buy new.
Thanks for all your advice. I went ahead and bought it anyway It is a tf-700, not unlocked, and in really good shape. The guy only used it for a couple weeks and then switched to the note 10.1 because of the stylus (so he said). Seems like the kind of guy who likes to switch out his toys fairly often.
It wasn't ridiculously cheap, I basically saved the tax and got the dock for free, so I feel I got a good deal.
Thanks again for your help.
Well done, then, I guess! And, errr.... welcome to our nice little club of geeks toying around with expensive gear.
(I feel a Deckard Cain quote coming up... "Stay a while and listen!" )
Have you tried unlocking it, or do you not care that much for customisation? Just asking, no opinion there.
Glad to hear you got a deal!
Enjoy that Infinity.
Thanks, I've been a lurker here for a while. I just recently made the switch from webos and replaced my pre3 with the GS3, and figured I might as well replace the touchpad too (I had it loaded with CM9) I still miss a few things about webos, but am really enjoying android so far. I was really waiting for the padfone to come to north america, but I think I'd have been waiting a long time, lol. padfone 2 maybe...
I put CM10 on the GS3, and I've rooted the TF700. I'm going to wait a bit before I unlock it. I figure if there are any issues I may still have a shot at a warranty. I'm definitely looking forward to JB on this baby though

Man...I wanted one of those HP Touchpads soooo bad when the price dumped to $99.00 bucks.
Missed out there, sucks too because my sister was working for HP at the time.
That's a coincidence - I had a HP Touchpad that I sold to help go towards buying the
Infinity The TP had CM9 and was really nice!
I also had the HP Pre3 but that died a very sudden death (on last day of warranty!) but Carphone Warehouse replaced it with a brand new samasung Galaxy S2.
Not rooted the Infinity yet . . . . . can't wait for Jelly Bean on it!

these things will soon be a year old, how are they holding up?

I know i am getting close to a year long ownership of this device. I paid 805 euros for mine. It is a WW sku unit and actually has a german keyboard and a schuko style power adapter. It has withheld an ungodly amount of physical abuse, just minutes ago i popped the one edge of the screen back into the casing and bent the casing back into shape near the volume button. This thing sees construction sites all over the world, and I am not as careful with it as i should be.
All in all it has been a great device, and a solid performer. I ran it stock for 15 minutes until i unlocked the bootloader, as those 15 minutes made me seriously regret my purchase, none of the stock firmwares are any good. I am on the latest CROMI-X, i have run ubuntu (and very much wish to do it again soon) but between data2sd and a few other mods, this thing is great.
Thanks to everyone in the development community at large for making this fantastic piece of hardware useful. :highfive:
Well I must say that this thing didn't hold well even the first thing it was released..

There's a VERY distinct difference:
EU Units are solid, tough and of a pretty good build quality.
The US units, on the other hand, particularly those from Best Buy, are more alike to dump quality.
Mine's from the pre-launch batch, which is usually notorious for having a million faults. And guess what. Not a single build flaw.
I actually just purchased a used unit off of an elderly gentleman on Craigslist. Grey TF700T w/ champagne dock. My only complaint is the rear speaker is really terrible. But for $325 for both the tablet and dock, I'm totally happy with my purchase.
Bought mine last November at a Best Buy in US. No problems at all. I use Cromi-x and love it.

Same here, pre-retail batch, pretty good and still going strong except for the feet that hold the tablet on the dock. I have no urge to replace my 700 anytime soon.

I might get a OPO from a friend soon, so I need your info on some OPO aspects, please

I am currently in talks with a friend from another country to sell to me his 64GB black OnePlus One! *cheering with excitement*
Given this is a very new device, there are very few reports (/reviews) out there, not to mention in-depth (like real in-depth) reviews. So... what is there to be done? Ask current owners of the OPO, of course!
I got a few questions for you guys. Which... please, I would love if you could answer!
1) What phone did you get? The 16GB white variant or the 64GB black one? And... did you get a retail box? If yes, what was inside it? If no... well...
2) How are the buttons? Compared to those of the HTC One M7 (which are quite flat, but still not that hard to press) or those of the Nexus 5 (which are awesome) or the Galaxy Note 1-2-3 / Galaxy S4...? Do they protude out? Are they 'feedbacky'?
3) How is the in-call volume? Some people (some, because most of them seem to miss this out entirely) claim the in-call volume is really low... both on the earpiece and the speakers.
4) How are the speakers performing? In terms of loudness and clarity, of course, when compared to something like the Galaxy S / Note phones or any other phone you are / was comparing it to?
5) The camera lens... is it sunk in a bit, so it won't scratch when placed on a table? Or the camera lens is flushed to the back and easily prone to scratches?
6) Have you noticed any screen input lag? Some people have said the touchscreen is not as responsive as, say, the Nexus 5.
If you can provide answers... well, thank you very much, in advance!!

I don't have the OnePlus One, but if you're thinking of getting one from China there's something you need to consider:
No support outside China, including warranty
I'm pretty sure radio bands are different than rest of the world, so carrier compatibility is probably hindered, especially on 3G and LTE
srps, there is support and warranty outside of China. Each place that is on the country list (16 atm) will have full warranties, as well as support.
The OP didn't say where he/she was getting the phone from. The bands that are supported are listed on the site. I would hope that the OP does their research and knows what they're getting.
Answer to 1: The people that got their phone as one of the first 100 did not get retail boxes. None of them. They're getting accessories sent to them later this month.
2: Buttons are pretty low, but they click when you press them. You'll know if you hit it or not. They stick out more than the M7, but not by much.
3: I didn't make any calls, so I can't answer this question.
4: Speakers are loud. There's two speakers on the bottom that are fairly loud (for phone speakers). I tested various sounds and music on them.
5: The camera piece rests flat on a table. The lens is sunk in just a little bit to protect it from harm. You won't scratch it by laying it down.
6: Input always seemed smooth. Never noticed any input delay.

Well... all I know is that it's a 64GB one. I have no idea if it comes from China or not. If it's from China, chances are it's not gonna work in Romania, heh? The guy is from Germany, by the way.

So... those guys are gonna get the accessories sent to them, but not the box? Just the accessories?

2: As I thought! Not as good as the Nexus 5, but better than the M7. Good! Thanks!
3: Anyway, I talked to supercurio on Twitter and he confirmed that low in-call volume is a software bug.
4, 5, 6: Thanks for setting my fears aside!

I know. That was my suspicion, too. But he managed to get it from sources which shall not be named (source source hint hint who does OPO work with). Don't have any info wether he has the accessories and the (just announced?) box, but regardless, for the price, it is worth it.
I have an S4 right now. If I am to sell it, I am lucky to get half of what I paid for it 8 months ago. On top of that, add ~$100 and I get that OPO. Good deal, heh?
Alternatives:
-sell the S4 and add ~$150 or even more for a HTC One M8 or similar
-wait for OnePlus to expand the country list they ship to and include mine (never?)

I would ask to see a picture of it showing the storage capacity. When push comes to shove I'd bet he can't provide one.
The 64GB is not available yet. None of the reviews you find on the net are 64gb their all 16gb.

As I said, he has it from the very source, so to say. So chances are it doesn't have to be available publicly for the insiders to have it. Of course I will ask for pictures.

There is support outside of China for non-Chinese SKUs. If you buy a Chinese one then you're stuck with China for support, and the bands are different.
I have no idea what version is that guy advertising, I just wanted to point that out so the OP is informed about the differences between Chinese and non-Chinese versions.
No one has publicly bought or given a 64GB international version yet.
