[POLL] Damage or No Damage when dropped (Yes/No) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

This poll is only for those who have dropped their shiny new GS4 or for those who have experienced screen damage without a drop incident. Please respond whether your phone's screen cracked/shattered or if it had no damage at all.
Also, please state below if your phone is in a case, and if so, please name the make and model.
This poll is not meant to start flame wars about personal responsibility for those who are clumsier than average. Only trying to gauge how durable the S4 is due to the number of "I can't believe my screen broke after a fall from only X feet!" posts.
Thank you!

Please do not check "yes this a question" for polls as it puts a Q in the title and all Qs go in Q&A. Title edited

No case. Dropped from knee high on to stiff carpet and it cracked something inside becase i had a green vertical line from then on. Got a new one though.

No case (then - have Spigen Neo Hybrid now). Dropped from high bar near hotel pool. Had headphones connected, so that definitely slowed the fall. Hit on concrete. No damage at all - not even scratch on bezel. Now have case and Square Trade insurance.

No drop no cracks so far so good . Just a matter of time tho , just hope my case does the job. Maybe I will put a chain on it like they use to do with wallets lol.

Mine was naked and on the 3rd day I was just browsing the internet in my parents family room, their floor is this brand new Patagonian Rosewood (one of the hardest woods) and my kids were goofing around with some beach ball and smacked my phone out of my hand, it fell about 2ft onto the hardwood. I was cringing cause I saw other thread of people dropping it on carpet and cracking it. Mine had zero issues, no dents, cracks, nothing.
Now my phone has the BestSkinsEver full body skin. I would've had it on earlier but they didn't send it till about 6days after the S4 launch.

Where's the option: Why would I drop my $600 phone?

Come on... You have to have some common sense. People dont drop phone because its fun, but because its an accident. I ACCIDENTLY dropped mine from 2 feet with a cheap case on and the screen shattered, so theres a testament to the durablilty of the phone. My freind let me drop his s3 in a balistic case from the 9 foot ceiling onto tile floor... Not a scratch anywhere. That just might be my next case when i fix the screen.

Well for me my kids goofing around with a beach ball inside the house smacked me pretty hard on the hands and the phone took off. If the screen shattered, boy I would've been pissed at my son for horsing around inside the house with a beach ball

Don't drop it if you don't want a broken phone, easy as that.
I dropped my SII a week after I got it. I was laying under a car using the light when it happened. I didn't blame anybody but myself. You kids that are complaining need to grow up and take responsibility for your actions.

Have accidentally dropped mine twice both times on concrete. First time was leaving the beach and it slipped from my hand while putting on shirt. While walking didn't have in my pocket cause shorts was wet. Fell from about 4 feet. Second drop was tonight from a table down to concrete floor on porch. Both times it was in a Pt platinum case from the Samsung booth in best buy. No screen protector. Not a scratch or crack happened. Still works perfect. 32 gb black mist model

Dropped my phone 3 times Thanks to my 1 year old son. Once from a foot and twice from about 3 feet off from the night stand. Flat down drops and a corner drop no damage what so ever.

Thank you all for the feedback. I would like to reiterate that this poll was only meant to gather information, not start flame wars.
Thanks.

I dropped my twice already. Stupid me putting it in a shirt pocket and then having it slide out when bending over to pick up something. Luckily it only has fallen from about 2 feet when this has happened. First time was on a tile floor second time was on a marble slab parking area that was wet. No damage either time accept for a minor scrape on the edge of the Spigen Neo Hybrid case I'm using.

dropped mine from chest hight (i'm 6' 2") onto a concrete patio. I have the samsung flip view cover, moshi ivisor xt screen protector, and spigen flip mate. not even a scratch!

I just dropped mine off of the bed. It has a case on it. No damage

Dropped my galaxy s4 twice. Unfortunately my amoled screeb cracked on the second drop (2feet to cement)

*Naked Phones Only* -- What is the condition of your Gs3?

I have been running a light case on my phone but have considered taking it off as I never seem to drop it.
Those of you without a case on your phone,
what condition is it in now?
Have you dropped it? How did it respond?
Thanks!!
Only had mine for a few days, but it's in marvelous condition. The screen doesn't seem to hold onto fingerprints at all.

Really? The only part on mine getting prints like crazy is the back. My screen doesn't for some reason.

I've gone case-less since I got mine on launch day, and cosmetically never had a single problem. A couple of months ago though I dropped it on a tile floor, and even though the screen or body didn't crack it wouldn't power back on, so something internal must have been damaged. I was able to use my insurance to get a replacement, but I'm not sure having a case on it other than something with some shock protection like an otter box would have helped anyway.

You know Murphy's Law...once you take the case off you will drop hard on the concrete....
This phone is waaaay to weak to be naked... I've broken my screen so many times from knee height drops.. one including being dropped on carpet. My old VIVOW was a lot stronger....
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I don't have a case I never liked them. I have cracked the screen on my old s3 though, happened to hit the metal strip that separates the room..Other than that I have a right pocket only rule and I make sure i NEVER put it on my lap when driving.
Been using my s3 without a case since the day it came out. Couple nicks around the metallic edge but otherwise in perfect condition. I don't really have a habit of dropping phones though.
Majority of my drops are because of my son.... when I drop it myself I get the ninja/football player move of catching it and nearly kicking it through a field goal...but I like to think I am the worst draft pick ever because I usually catch it with my foot and it goes nowhere.

I've had my phone naked for about 5 months and I only have a few light scratches on the back, that are not noticeable without really looking for them.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I've had mine since launch and dropped it once on a concrete floor at work and a few times at the house. The only drop that caused any damage was the one at work and it barely scuffed the corner of the metal trim. So little it took me a minute to find it.

i too have had mine since launch and am using a Ringke "SLIM-Lite" case...no screen protector.
device is flawless!
no scratches, scuffs, or any other blemishes.
I have been using a rokform rokbed v3 S3 case just for the mount and the phone is in good condition. no screen scratches. the case has a tendency to scratch the battery cover so i got a replacement to use with the case. not easy to find the black verizon S3 battery covers so that is sitting in the box the phone came in.
I also have a rokform v3 (awesome case) on mine since I saw a drop test on YouTube. There is no way I would feel safe without it.

no case ever
i only have a screen protector on my phone. I avoid cases for phones because I keep my phone in my pocket and I don't like the size of the phone with a case on. This may not be the best idea because I am also quite clumsy but I really do like the thin sleek phone with no case. In any case, I must say that I am quite impressed with this phone. I've had it for about 5 months and have dropped it somewhere between 10-15 times. It is usually just a small drop but I have definitely dropped it out of my coat while taking the coat off and out of the car when getting out multiple times and only have a few small scratches on the back. There has been no damage to the screen at all. So to anyone that is scared of removing the case, my advice is to enjoy the design of the phone and not worry about the back. After all, a replacement for the back cover is cheaper then many of the cases out there.
I run mine naked about half the time, in a tpu case the rest of the time. I have two very small nicks in the silver trim around the sides, and a little scuff on the home button. I've had the phone since a few days before launch, though I did replace the battery cover recently because I broke it taking it off one time. Always have an SGP Ultra Nano screen protector though.
I'd say most people should have no problem running with no case, but it may not be the best idea. I love the feel of the naked phone and frequently use it like that, but I have dropped it from about waist height a few times onto hardwood floors or low carpet.
The phone feels nice enough that you do keep a firm grip on it and treat it like your precious, and if you're careful to keep your pocket empty you won't scratch it there. But because it's so slick, it can slip out of your pocket when sitting, or off of a surface you've set it on. Plus if you have anything else in your hand, it's easy to forget to keep a firm grip on the phone.
I've now got a Cruzerlite tpu case that looks and feels awesome, and like any tpu case removes in seconds with no wear. The material provides a great deal of protection for its minimal bulk, I've accidentally thrown my old Droid RAZR onto asphalt and concrete on separate occasions with just a slim tpu case with no harm done. Recently, I've been carrying with that case for peace of mind, and taking it off on occasion to use it, or if I'm at something rather formal.
But I see no need for something more than tpu, like an Otterbox, for the average person. If you're particularly clumsy, if you frequently skate, run, bike, 4 wheel, hunt, etc with it, or have a fairly physical profession I can see it, but for the rest of us it's overkill.

Shattered my screen

Edit: http://imgur.com/gallery/RxDMtA8/new
Yup I might be the first A-hole to shatter my screen. Dropped on top left corner from 5 feet. Completely anhiliated the screen to the point that by the impact zone a crater of gorilla glass is gone. And the bezel, well yea a piece of that disappeared as well.. Its completely my fault, but I will def be reconsidering plastic devices in the future. Could it have killed them to include a legit metal bezel... Time to go cry haha
Anyone know if new screens are even available yet?

Drop tests aren't always accurate, as quite a lot depends on where the point of impact is after the fall. Overall though, given that the S4 did survive a few of the drops is a good thing, as it seemed the S3 is a bit less durable.
Either way though, Gorilla Glass isn't meant to offer a ton of protection for drops - It's scratch resistant, not shatterproof.

Haha I most certainly am... I'll be posting pics today. I'm just most upset that the bezel chipped apart. I think that if it were able to absorb some of the impact or if there was a simple metal bezel the device would have fared much better.
Actually, the fact the plastic bezel broke too meant that even a metal case wouldn't have saved you.
Read up about "crush zones" in cars and how if the frame (bezel in this case) is crumpled, it reduces the damage to the people inside (screen in this case).
It sounds like your phone hit the corner and hit hard enough that unless you had a TPU case, it would've been dead either way.
+1. A lot of factors go into how phone damage occurs when you drop it. Five feet without a case purely on the corner is enough to damage the best of builds but throw on a decent tpu and your phone might live to see the light. Also would like to add that as long as you can replace the screen with ease, which luckily Samsung designed the phone well enough to be disassemble, it's not that bad of a situation.
At the end of the day though you should really get phone insurance. It's the best case money can buy lol

If you're a little handy with fixing phones and what not then you might be in luck. The glass and lcd can be separated just like the s3. Lcd which is the display has the touch built into it. The glass is just for protection. Ive done it on the s3 many times. With a heat gun and a blade. The glass alone cost $30-40. Find your local repair shop at most you should pay is $150.

Thanks everyone for the the suggestions

Not sure bout s4 build quality. Shattered screen

Well my fiance had her S4 for 3 days and now this. My son through the phone on my kitchen floor and this is the result. She had a snap on casemate case. Now i know its my sons fault for throwing the phone. Hes thrown my note 2 plenty of times. Hes thrown her S3 plenty of times and never had issues. I know the S4 is alot lighter then those phones so i wonder if anything was sacrificed. Anyway filed a claim with assurion and makin her get an otterbox or ballistic for now

I'm sure you'll get lots of comments about, "it's high damage resistance, not damage proof".
http://www.neowin.net/news/galaxy-s...gorilla-glass-3-is-still-not-impact-resistant
Thats so sad. :crying: I dropped mine from about 4-5 feet onto gravel. It landed vertically striking the bottom of the phone near the mic. Just a small scratch is all that came from it. From the way I understand things, lighter weight would help to prevent the phone from breaking by limiting the amount of force that the glass had to absorb. striking the corner of the glass is the weakest point on any phone as Gorilla glass 3 is build to withstand more direct force without cracking. I suppose you could call that shear stress: The force applied when you press on the screen. The result is that the corner of the phone is without a doubt the weakest point due to the force absorbing properties of the glass as striking the corner absorbs the full force of the fall over the smallest area. Once the integrity of the screen is compromised, the cracks spider web.
Its just luck dude, you win some, you lose some. I'd keep the kid away from the phones to be on the safe side

All depends on where it lands.
thought I would chime in. As I understand, the Gorilla Glass 3 used in S4 is a new tech that lets the glass be thinner. Basically you get same or slightly worse resistance comparing to S3, but in a thinner layer of glass. It let Samsung decrease the thickness of the device.
Note that the surface of the glass is bigger on S4 comparing to S3, so it is more prone to damage. Buy a good case for your phone!
My preferred case style is a thin layer of silicon or TPU inside with a harder plastic shell outside.
back in the old days, when i got my BlueAngel, i immediately got am aluminum case (the one with the window), then a leather fliptop. My sister got a Prophet but didn't get any case for it. I found a good deal for a magnesium Proporta case online, asked my sis if she wanted to get one for her PDA so we can save on shipping. She declined, told me she's always extra careful. Long story short, a week after, got my Proporta, dropped the BlueAngel a hundred times, often times with the case opening and the BA flying away, but then most of the force had already dissipated. But her Prophet? I guess about a month after i got the Proporta, she dropped her Prophet onto the granite floor, heard a crack, and found her Prophet's screen was all black about a third from the bottom. costed her about a third of what she paid for her Prophet to replace the screen.
Cost of the Proporta? hmmm a tenth? Morale of the story, if you invest on expensive phones, consider also a good enough case to protect it. After the BA, i got a Nokia E72, and then a BB Bold, all dressed in Otterbox's Defender. My S4 is due to arrive in a week or so; right now i'm tossing the coin between another Defender or a Seidio Convert. too bad they don't make Lunatiks for Samsung
just my.02
Seriously, was wondering the same. I know Note II has cracked for plenty of people too, and a lot of luck is involved, etc, but - look up android authority drop tests, both Note II and S4 had identical impact and still S4 glass broke.
They have different screens. The gs4 is thinner to bring the actual screen closer to your eyes. The note 2 is gg2 and has an extra layer for the wacomm hardware.

Really surprised with durability of the gs3

I have found myself continously dropping my gs3 due to its slick plastic cover. I even dropped it out of my car while I was cruising 55mph on the highway and it only scuffed up one edge. However my phone is still in perfect operating condition. What's your guys opinoin/experiences on the durability of this phone?

I have a case and rarely dropped my phone. The few times I did dropped it I had a case on the phone so I can only speak on the fact that the case did its job in protecting my phone.
My phone seemed really durable too until it took a small 2 foot fall onto a tile floor. Unfortunately it landed perfectly on the edge where the glass meets the frame and wrecked the screen. The glass was slightly chipped, however, the screen below shattered and became worse over the course of a day until it was solid purple.
I spotted mine once from the seat of my truck and it lasted quite well with the potter box, I haven't deployed it with the extended battery and rubber case yet. With the potter box it survived with no damage

My friends and I were hanging on the patio roof (2 stories) during a party and he dropped his onto the concrete walkway. It just got scratched on the back cover slightly. Screen was perfect/didn't crack. Still works perfect as if out of the box. If that isn't durability, then I dont know what is. He had a cover but it was just an old regular hard plastic case.
Either luck was on his side or this phone is unbreakable.
So, the Samsung s3 is only durable if the device lands flat on its back? Is that what I'm reading?

All phones can crack, but the polycarb on the S3 makes it more resistant than the all glass iPhone or Nexus 4. I wish people would stop complaining about 'build quality' of Samsung phones - its a common myth for many people and blogs, they think Samsung phones are built well or last.
People kept complaining about the back cover being so flimsy but I liked that I could buy a replacement when I dropped my phone and scratched it and that no one would be able to notice the difference.
Prefer the backcover too
yeah, i prefer the backcover. I feel like the whole aluminum back is overrated, you cant replace the battery!
i have been using my phone naked since november and i havent seen any visible imperfections besides i mean scratch i got yesterday. sucks cause it's in the middle of the screen and distorts the colors.
Mine seems pretty durable, I have never used a case aside from the OEM flip case, and I've dropped it from my car to the cement twice now (always forget its in my lap before I get out) and I only have a couple small scuffs on the edges. When my buddy dropped his iPhone 4 the same way getting out of my car the front and back glass cracked like crazy.
The iPhone may feel more sturdy in the hand, but in reality its as fragile as an infant.
Gone thru 2 cracked screen phones already. Both drops less than 2 ft.

this phone is tough

So I lost my phone out of my pocket while riding my bike. Sprinting approx 40km up a hill. It jumped out, hit the road. And slid into the bushes. Front of the phone looks new back has some pretty bad scratches. But everything is pretty much fine. No dents no marks on screen. Was in a dot view case. A few scratches on the case and they instantly separated when impacting the ground, which kind of sucked.
That's funny because this feels like the most fragile android I've owned in 5 years. Mainly because my first one lived in my pocket but the camera still managed to get scratched to the point to where it was hard to find a spot on it that wasn't scratched. Now I don't feel comfortable carrying my phone at work. I carried my s4 everywhere with me for a year and not one scratch on the camera lens. This is my first phone with a screen protector on the camera lens.
That is why I have an otter box and a really expensive, tough screen protector. If you're planning on biking with your phone loose in your pocket, you may want to invest in those also!

ya the dot view case is cool but hardly serves the purpose of an actual case.
Should be a criminal offense to use a case for this phone.
Try and get a pair of arms not growing out of one's behind so the droppage is minimized.

Right, because you've never dropped anything in your life.

Cases actually assist this phone in other ways than just protection. For one, they make the touchscreen less susceptible to undesired palm touches when using it one handed, and can hide the loose volume rocker issue many people have.

The trick is to get a clear case. That's what I did. Didn't want to cover up all that arctic silvery goodness. :good:
Oh, that and not to drop it....
I would suggest getting a case like this for biking.
Hyperion M8 Case
The phone is no longer slippery and won't fly out of your pocket.
I use it for mountain biking and it stays put no matter where I put the phone (shorts pocket, back of jersey, etc.)

It's just fine to spend money for your phone's protection. This is one of the nicest phones.

I agree on the camera screen. Mine has a couple scratches as well. Never had any other phone do that. However the rest of the phone is scratch free which is even more strange. What protector are you using on the camera screen? I think I'm going to get HTC to fix it then apply a protector to it.

It feel out of my sweater's pocket right onto the blacktop as I was getting out of my car. Minor scratches on top left and bottom right on the back side. Oh well. I'll have to be more careful.

I thought I had a ton of scratches on my lens,I would wipe it off with a soft cloth and they wouldn't wipe off. Well today while sitting bored I just took my sleeve and rubbed with some pressure for a good 5 minutes. All those marks that looked like scratches all came of . Might try some alcohol on a qtip when I get home.
going back to the original op issue. I use the dot case when not biking and I use a otter box defender case mounted to the handle bars when riding. So far the otter box works very nice and does not come off on the bike ride. It takes around a minute to put the phone in the case every ride, but nothing to long.
one added bonus about the mounted otter box and m8. When listing to a talk podcast I sometimes do not use headphones, the speakers are plenty loud.
