spontaneous grey screen - Asus Transformer TF700

Sometimes when I just surf the web or install apps from the play store, the screen turns GREY all of a sudden and the device becomes unresponsive and freezes.
I experienced this 4 times already.
I have not rooted it and run the official 4.2.1 Firmware.
I already made a factory reset after the third time it happened, but it keep happening.
is this a known issue or should I send in for repair?

I had that issue a couple of times when i was on ICS and i'm sure that other users also reported this but i don't know what's causing it.
I don't think you need to RMA the device, most likely is a software issue .

Are you saying the whole screen goes uniform gray? No pictures, no text, just one grey surface??
Or do you mean the screen dimming when a new web page is loading? The latter is a new feature of the 4.2 browser. Supposed to save battery which is think is boooogus.

There is a post "Transformer White Screen Freeze" that is similar. The only conclusion so far seems to be that it only occurs in portrait view no one matter what version of android or rom you're running.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2

That issue is software related and seems to happen on stock roms. It can happen anytime, often after rotating the screen from landscape to portrait. The screen turns grey with a black strip on one of the edges and after some seconds the device reboots.
I'm on CM for a week and I haven't had this issue again, I had it several times on stock roms including CROMi.

It's a graphical bug that only happens in Portrait mode. (Which explains why I have never seen it.) Happens to everyone on Stock. (if they use portrait mode, that is.)
This tablet was never actually meant to be a portrait device. (As evident by the location of everything...). Though that is ofcourse no excuse.

Screen flickering issue

I got my transformer today. All was well untill I started using browser. The screen flickers like crazy and sometimes has banding pattern. It is random but appears to affect all the different browsers that I have tried. Then I started using kindle. It works well in landscape mode but starts flickering like crazy if I use it in portrait mode. Is anyone else having this problem. Is ther any fix or I will have to RMA this?
Thanks
I get this problem with the browser from time to time. To make it go away, I always just hit the home button and re-open the browser. It's annoying but not a major frustration.
Are you able to make it go away with this method?
I'm experiencing the same issue with screen flicker. I first noticed it when opening and closing apps but now it just happens randomly. I will give it another day before RMA'ing it back to newegg.
Its just random and very irritating.Kindle is completely unusable in portrait mode but works perfectly in landscape mode.I dont know if this is a hardware issue or a software one.I am gonna wait till tomorrow then I will either RMA it with ASUS or return it to newegg.I got it after waiting for so long today and now this
Happens to me when playing Plants v. Zombies or online, I thought it was me seeing things...but I notice it more and more now :/
I don't want to have to return it, but I may end up doing it. Maybe later shipments will have this fixed...hopefully
Well I just wiped all the data in my transformer 3-4 times by pressing volume down and power button and the vol up. Somehow the flickering has reduced a lot from browsers now. Will check again tomorrow if it stays like this. but Kindle in portrait mode is still useless. Maybe its honeycomb or some software issue.
got a replacement unit because of the flickering. Now its completely gone, even in kindle or polaris office. I think its a hardware issue

Transformer White Screen Freeze

My Transformer has the same issues as everyone else; it's extremely laggy, apps crash, etc. But I also have this thing where every once in a while, if I click on something, my screen will go white with a line at the bottom and freeze. I have to restart the tablet to get it working again. I read through a lot of different threads and couldn't find anything. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I can't find any causes/solutions online. Any ideas?

I've had the same issue but haven't seen it in a couple days. I was told to cold boot it to solve the problem. After doing that, I haven't seen it again, but I haven't used it as much.
I am having the same issue. Started last night. Froze up first then a bit later went to white screen then rebooted. Today it froze up again...no white screen this time but could not access settings...the icon for settings was there but nothing else. Happen after reboot again...shut it down after that till now. Had been working fine. UPDATE is needed badly...I also have the Acer a700, that has been great so far...much better than this one.
Happened once to me too, i rebooted, and it has not happened since.

Haven't had the white screen return yet but I have had a recurring issue with freezing. Tablet was working last night when I put it down...this morning there was no internet connection. Went to settings to turn on wifi and it froze, just like before, only the settings logo and the word settings were visible. Received a message about the program not responding, my options were to close down or wait for program. When I got the white screen before it happened just as described above.
Here is the thing, installed the 9.4.5.26 20120720 firmware update earlier last night...I was hoping that was the fix for this issue but no such luck.

I had a freezing issue only once.
I installed and used an app that ran in compatibility mode.
It started portrait and I think there was no landscape mode at all.
But I tried to turn the tab for that mode and that was that...
Crashed.
So maybe check for running apps that are not compatible ?
My unit had a burning smell come out of the speaker. Memory has been running consistently high 560 - 690 ram. Now I just got the "white screen of death".
Unit is going back for a replacement.
I have been having the same problem. The past couple of freezes occurred whil using google chrome. I have decided to send it back for a refund (thank you Amazon!)
Too bad, I had anticipated the arrival of this tablet for so long.
I returned my first one for tv snow but i did notice that you can wait it out 15seconds or so. Its almost like it is coming out of a deep sleep coma

Decided to send mine back today (froze again)... who knows how long before I get a replacement...I hope it has no issues or it will go back again and I will get another a700... which has been working great. Sucks because I have to suck up the cost of the screen protector...and buy another.

Worst purchase ever!
I really like Andoid, I currently have a Galaxy S3 phone and I don't have any problems. I really wanted an Android tablet and with the higher resolution the Infinity seemed like the one to get. I have had it for a month and I think this purchase is one of the worst I ever made. With the keyboard and accessories I have around $1000 invested in a tablet that only works part time. It crashes at least once a day while doing different tasks. Just now it was just sitting there on the locked screen and the screen went to all white. Holding the power button didn't do any good and I had to use the reset button. I feel like I wasted my money and I don't know if I should avoid Asus products or if Android tablets suck, the problem might even be with Jelly Bean. I don't like Apple at all but I really wish I had bought an iPad.
this has happened to me three times in the last day, and each time while i tried to play an MP3 and read a Kobo book at the same time. (don't get me started on why a $500 tablet can't play music and display text AT THE SAME TIME. what the hell).
i'd start the track, load up kobo, and BOOM: white screen. i think i know why: all my music was in internal storage. for the hell of it, i moved all my tunes to the microSD card. and no more white screen, i can read and listen to tunes at the same time.
go figure.

I've been having this happen a lot. Essentially, I have two things happen:
1. In some app (Firefox, Redfin (we're house hunting), etc) and click something. Tablet freezes. Click something again, and it resets. The next thing you see is the black screen w/ Asus logo.
2. Same as above, but first you get a full white screen for ~10 seconds. THEN it reboots and you see the black screen w/ Asus logo.
It happens at least once an hour under heavy use of the tablet (lots of app switching, browsing the web, etc).
I have:
1. Cold booted.
2. Upgraded to JB.
3. After upgrading to JB, I reset cache and everything *multiple* times before installing all new apps.
Is this a known issue, or are the few people complaining about it just F'd?
I am seeing this too. Not sure what else to do with this issue?, Exchange? I want to believe this is software, but where does that leave me?

I have this issue under Jelly Bean, but never had it happen under ICS. If you are in the same boat, an exchange will likely not help. Your best bet is either to put on a different firmware, or get a different unit all together (ie, not Asus).

The problem is that Asus decided to use a cheap nand chip that has slow i/o speeds which causes the lag. It's not a problem with android. Have a look at a note 10.1 if you want to see a lag free tablet.
Still, I flashed a new rom, and its much improved. And no white screens so far with a few hours of use.
White screen is a known issue with JB, it's not hardware issue. We just have to wait for another update from Asus. They promised to release a new one soon to address, keyboard, wifi and camera issues, but did not mention about white screen issue. We just have to wait and see. If white screen issue is bothering you too much, just down grade back to .30.

i'm getting this white screen with heavy use - sometimes a couple times a day. never had the problem with ICS. definitely a post-JB thing. it's gotta be a software issue not a hardware problem. a fix will come. in the meantime.....

Screen started to flicker! Please help..

Hello all,
I have been using my TF700 for like 3 weeks now. Yesterday suddenly it started to flicker. First I tried cold boot and it turned normal but today it got even worse. It stops randomly and then starts again.
so should i return that or is it just software issue? (dammit i cant out the youtube link)
EDIT: It fades away after like 10-12 seconds, do you think it is software related? Using latest firmware btw.

"5. Disable "smart dimmer", which is the reason you can see some screen flickering when changing between light and dark backgrounds that many find annoying (described by some as "dynamic contrast", which it resembles):
To disable:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable
To re-enable echo 1 to the this file or simply reboot.
Be sure to include this in a script so that rebooting won't change it (just make an .sh script with the above line in it, you can use either SManager or system .sh scripts (you can use my simple solution posted here if you don't like editing files yourself). See also jtrosky's hints on changing the brightness settings.
Please note that it may negatively affect your battery life, although with brightness set low it shouldn't be much worse.
All credit goes to those who have found out about it - see this post for details."

thank you for your reply. it just occured that for example when there's a flicker on the screen, if i turn on auto brightness, it goes away.
the thing is actually i do not know if it is software related or just bad hardware. returning it to amazon would push me in a lot of trouble (like shipping it back, waiting for repair or sth) and the biggest problem that i don't have that much time.

I'm under the impression that the autobrightness and the smart dimmer are two different things. The smartdimmer cannot be turned off without doing the edit i pasted above. Try it out and see if it works for you
omg this is totally not normal right? it got even worse(see attached pics)

Um yea, I'd get that replaced ASAP
Yep - that's the same kind of graphical glitches that I had before I rebooted and my TF700 was dead (although my glitches weren't quite as bad). After rebooting, my device would just lock up at random places during the startup - sometimes at the first screen (where it says your device is unocked), sometimes at the Asus screen with the circles and sometimes I could even get to the Android lock screen (or even further), but in the end the device just keeps locking up hard. Tried all of the normal "reset" stuff including going back to complete stock, unrooted, etc...
In my case it's definitely a hardware problem, but since I was unlocked, I can't even get warranty service.
Just curious as to your locked state, rooted state or if you were running a custom ROM...
Thanks.

luckily i haven't unlocked it yet and i am sending it back to amazon for replacement. hope i will get one without problems, but i have some doubts about it after reading hundreds of complainings in forums.
My screen sometimes flickers when playing a game. The game also crashes at this point. I wonder what this issue could be. After a cold boot it usually works fine for a couple of days.
I've only had this tablet for 2 weeks now, but some issues like poor io performance, screen flickering, and the screen flex on certain points on the screen are really annoying me. Maybe I should go to the retailer and ask for a replacement.

White screen

Hi all,
Sometime I get a strange white screen. Tablet does not have any reaction. Then it reboots and start normal. HVe a full clear installation of jellybean....
Someone hVe same issues?
Nope.
Something doesn't sound right.
Have you tried a cold boot? Failing that a factory reset?
I occasionally get a white screen too. Seems to happen in portrait mode for some reason. I notice theres a strange yellowish line near the top (portrait orientation) of the screen as well. Then, I force reboot it because nothing responds.
It happened back in ICS and now (only once so far) in JB

I have gotten the same thing from time to time. Tablet freezes with the white screen and then reboots. Always seems to happen when I am switching between programs.
Yes it happens, I get mostly white screen nut occasion or two had a dark brown freeze up screen. JB has made improvements.
I was getting these white screens and reboots also. I downgraded to ICS (which seemed to wipe everything on internal memory), rooted, root protected, upgraded back to JB, restored root. It seems to be running fine now after using it for a couple days. No random reboot incidents. It's running even smoother than before.
Hmm.... had a full clear flash of jb. Wipe everything. And yes always in potrait mode

Happened to me once or twice when an app fully froze.

List of applications causing White screen/reboot

Ever since JB update, I started seeing this white screen freeze, and eventually reboot. It felt very random as this happened on occasions with different application; however, I have not had any for at least past 4-5 days, which never happened until I tried one thing. So I am somewhat convinced at least the issue on my end was related to a single application. And yes. in the past I tried cold boot, factory reset etc. none of them really helped. So I wanted to see if anyone else identified similar with other application. If so, let's list them here, so people would know.
1. Screen Filter
My white screen ended up happening whenever I use screen filter, which itself runs fine. But next morning, I turn back on the tablet after overnight charge, and open another application while screen filter is still on (from the night), that's when I see white screen. I can still use screen filter, but now I use it and turn it off before turn the screen off/recharge.
If you can get a video of the behavior, Asus would like to see:
