not sure if this is pure bs or if its real.. but if its the real deal then its fantastic!
Google’s big yearly conference is often the stage for new products, and this year is promising to be bigger than any other. Despite shifting from two smaller keynotes to one larger keynote, Google is ready to put on quite a show tomorrow. Part of the big day will be to announce a new version of Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S4. While Samsung’s phone is an incredible piece of hardware, many users find themselves less than pleased with Samsung’s version of Android. To resolve this once and for all, a pure AOSP version of the Galaxy S4 is being prepped for launch and will be unveiled during the IO keynote.
Not to be confused with a Nexus phone, which is a piece of hardware made with Google’s guiding hand, the Galaxy S4 GE will feature stock Android inside the familiar plastic casing. According to sources on hand at Google IO, this Google Edition phone is a collaboration between Samsung and Google to address a growing group of users that prefer stock Android on something other than a Nexus. In order to accomplish this right now, users would need to install custom versions of Android like CyanogenMod. Complete with removable battery and expandable storage with the MicroSD card slot, this phone could certainly address this growing niche.
This Google Edition S4 is expected to be made available starting in June and will be available on T-Mobile bands. At this time we are unaware of pricing or whether more bands will be made available. It’s also unclear if Samsung will be selling the phone or if it will be available through the Google Play Store.

That would piss me off a ridiculous amount. I am locked into a two-year contract with this phone that might not even be reliably unlockable. Then Samsung pulls this ****, weeks after releasing their phone. This is what is wrong with Android.

I realize that I'm in the minority here but I personally prefer touchwiz. Ran touchwiz roms on my SGS2 and I intend to run them when we have custom recovery on our SGS4's. For me, that's what makes the difference between buying a Samsung or a Motorola or an LG.
That said, this is a smart move on Samsung's part (if true of course.) You get the advantage of officially supported AOSP with LTE and a warranty. If it's successful I could see others following suit and offering their hardware when a choice of AOSP or their own flavor of android.

I'll wait until it launches, see what the developer scene looks like, before I make a decision. I won't be jumping on launch day, but I've been impressed with Samsung's recent actions, fast kernel source releases, donations of phones to developers, etc.

They spent 900 bucks plus airfare to get to IO I don't think anyone will touch Jelly Bean until source is released in mid July. SDK ports are buggy as all get out and nothing more than proof of concept. We still won't have a fully functional ROM until LG releases ICS source. On the bright side, drivers should be able to be ported from ICS to JB, until GB to ICS.
i see Paul at modaco.com already has JB rom w/kitchen for the galaxy nexus the G2x versions will be uber gimped due to lg's inability to release the source to the dev community. reason why i sold my g2x for a gnex and haven't looked back.

Haven't the previous Google direct Galaxy phones been outdated rather quickly? Maybe not outdated, but left behind in terms of OTA's and things like that?
I mean, people will argue the galaxy s2 is a better phone than Nexus...and now the s3 just came out! For one (only one?) of the only devices to come pre-packaged with ICS, it seems to lack certain functionality and features that carrier specific phones have.

 Yea, hopefully Samsung can tell Verizon to move it with this. I'll be surprised if a update doesn't come out before to fix any issues or if the JB update will include them. This phone is great but, their are a few issues I hate. One being the music popping.
Wait so if this comes out for the INT varient is it really that hard for developers to just transition it over to our verizon model?
I was hoping they'd add a couple unified widgets to it with the update.
I love this phone (features, screen, battery), and Touchwiz isn't as bad as people make it out to be..... but..... Is it too much to ask that they add a contacts widget (so that I don't have to use a different syncing app) and a social feed widget that go along with the email and calendar widgets? I miss having a unified feel across the board like on sense. It seems that no matter what widgets I download and install from the market, they look horrible next to Samsung's calendar widget which I've grown to like a lot.
That's really my only gripe on an otherwise great phone. Still looking forward to seeing what JB brings.

Only major difference between the S3 and Note 2 are the screen size, and the Note 2 is quad core whereas the S3 is dual core. So really its personal preference, the Note 2's bootloader may or may not ever be unlocked so if hacking is more your thing i'd pass on it. If you want my personal opinion, i'd stick with your S3 and save some money
Keep with SIII. New firmware from Sammy will add all note features in Q1 2013. If I were to upgrade get a Nexus 4 which will also be in stock in Q1 2013 which has the similar specs to Note II such as 2GB RAM and Quad Core CPU.

In reality the S3 is still an amazing phone that can not only handle anything you throw at it, but it has pretty much every custom ROM, mod, kernel, and theme you could possibly want and will likely have great developer and community support for the foreseeable future so unless your really need the marginal better real world performance and the 0.7" bigger screen I would save your money and go with the S3. As far as which is more suitable for an apocalypse, neither, because once there is no more electricity both would be useless once they ran out of battery (Unless you constructed a hand crank generator or solar cell charger ). Also I imagine all cellular infrastructure needed for voice and data to work wouldn't function either. Accessories wise a good case like the Otterbox Defender Series would be perfect to prevent the phone from getting banged up and scratched (It includes a built in screen protector).
Try both and see what fits in your hand more comfortably. If you are seriously concerned about the apocalypse, the Note II might make for a better weapon due to its size.

Definitely agree, I believe us GS3 users are not as impressed as others. The gs3 set the bar so high, it's kinda hard to notch that with the s4. The obvious hardware upgrade is nice which I still don't believe android is ready for quad core, octa-core processors and again we might the least powerful one. All the camera stuff if you don't voice chat, then all that doesn't matter. Also the air wave is kinda overrated bet most of us won't use it,cool idea though. Might be stuck to stock browser too and for some reason I have never used it on this phone or previous one.

Not going to make me switch. I am actually more impressed with the HTC One due to the build quality.
I love my s3, but IMO most these features they have are gimmicky and I would hardly use majority of them. I will say the camera looks good, but also have been impressed with the Ones camera.
Honestly Id rather have a Note 2 over this.
I am sure it will sell well though.

Obviously they know people like me will buy it anyways, but still.... Who wants to take a guess at off contract pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S4? Over $700.00? My guess is the $650.00 range.

I just feel the "upgrades" are nothing plausible compare to the concept of s3...i mean i do not use all of the motions of s3...few additional ones are not going to change that because well...I wont' be using them. I do not voice chat so all the pretty camera things are cool.
Do I want it? yes...will I cough up another 200 bucks? Heck no! hell it wont be 200 considering t-mobile will probably sell it at what? 350? 400?
Its not plausable to the point I will drop my s3 and run after it...s3 set the bar too high for even samsung. This is like Iphone 4 and Iphone 4s...the s4 being the 4s...expect the gs3 blows the iphone out of the water so we wont even get on to s4.
Perhaps if the s5 comes around, we will talk
For me, I don't even like the Samsung software anyway, so all I pay attention to is the specs. Which means for me its just another notch up in the seemingly never-ending screen size growth of android phones; and some modest hardware upgrades.
I will say that the processor, new sensors (temperature, humidity & some others) and camera sounds pretty awesome, but nowhere near anything good enough for me to switch.
And Samsung with all its gimmicky software features is nothing in my eyes worth looking at trying out TouchJizz...
I won't be switching any time soon. Especially since I just upgraded on January 27. And it was a tough decision between this and the Note 2. Went with the S3 cause I got it for $99.99 at Target.
Sent from my wickedly awesome Galaxy S3 using my fingers. Duh!!!
I might be tempted to switch if they got rid of the soft buttons on the bottom of the phone. I'm constantly having to be wary of them and still managing to hit them and mess up what I was working on despite being careful...
Re: Galaxy S IV.
I plan on getting it. The specs look too sweet to past up...plus I'm due for a upgrade
US version no octo.
No thank you.
