Wipe wipe wipe

Just want to make sure what it means of a full wipe. Does it mean wiping data,cache and dalvik ? And does this erase the applications ? Specially if your updating from a older rom ver. To a new one. Sorry for my noobness and thanks for the info in advance.

Full mean everything cache, dalvik cache, data, and even system this will delete all your personal apps. Do this when going to different roms (cm7 to miui, or froyo to gb) when updating the same rom its not really necessary, but you can wipe cache and dalvik cache (wipe these two when flashing kernels) just to be safe, dalvik and cache wiping will not delete your personal apps.

Follow fcisco13's advice. If you wipe data/factory reset from clockworkmod it will wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache all at the same time. So just do that and then format /system and you'll minimize issues.
As said above, if you're only updating to a newer version of the same rom, or to a new kernel, then just wipe cache and dalvik cache.

I wipe wipe wipe and even factory reset and re-flash rom but I still have old app/game on the phone.
What am I doing wrong??

Also a good idea after flashing something new or updating before restarting always (fix permissions)
This will prevent most fc's...

Hmmm ... during the initial setup of Android are you selecting to let Google backup/restore your apps and settings? If so then your phone will automatically download and restore apps and setting that were backed up to Google's servers from your previous installation.

Dalvik cache after flashing stock

I flashed the stock AT&R ROM with Odin.
After setting back up and reinstalling apps I got an error during a market install saying there was not sufficient space for install.
I researched and found that some people have gotten this and remapped the cache to the SD card and it may be an issue with the Dalvik cache needing to be cleared.
After the flash of stock I did not restore phone to defaults via the stock recovery menu (vol up/vol dn/pwr). So I have now done that and am in the process of reinstalling again but it got me thinking...
If the only way to clear the Dalvik cache is to use CWM, then how to you maintain Stock (to get AT&T updates) because you need CWM to clear cache after flashing?
Or am I just severely confused??

To answer your question. Flash cwm in odin, clear dalvic cache. Then flash stock recovery. Done!!

[Q] what happens if i didnt wipe cache and delvik before updating cm10?

so i updated cm10 to a newer version and i didn't wipe anything i just flashed the zip file and everything booted up fine but now im worried that something may go wrong in the future can anyone help??

Boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Reboot and you should be good.
If you start getting issues, consider reflashing will all the wipes.

wipe cache partition error

hello. i installed android 4.2.2 via odin and i didn't wipe data/cache partition before upgrade. after a while i did a factory reset from settings and after that i wiped data partition from recovery. after that i tried to wipe cache partition also from recovery but an error appeared and the phone restarted.
So my question is: why when i try to wipe cache partition from recovery i have that error? if i use any aplication to wipe cache when the phone is booted to android there is no problem. also the cache can be cleared with no problem from settings/storage. The error came up only from recovery.

You are using stock recovery?
I tried wiping cache. But I didn't notice error. And yes it also rebooted itself, which I didn't ask it to. But my cache was cleared

Yes,i am using stock recovery. Well i did not try to wipe cache on 4.1.2, just on 4.2.2, so i do not know if on 4.1.2 is doing the same. Do you have 4.1.2 or 4.2.2? I also read that s4 users have the same error while wiping cache partition after updating their android. Could another flash solve the problem?

actually if it does the work, it doesn't really matter if it reboots itself after wiping cache, after all you only need it to wipe your cache, so if it does the job, then why let the problem bother you

agree with you, but how do i know if the cache is cleared if i have that error?

Go to settings. Storage.
There should be a column saying:
Cached data.
If it's a lot, then it's not cleaned

now its 60mb, but several days passed from the time i tried to wipe cache partition. yesterday i received a notification for a software update. it was 4.2.2 I9105PXXUBMI1, which replaced the one that i flashed with odin I9105PXXUBMG8. when i will have time i will try again to wipe cahe from recovery, maybe the problem is fixed with this new firmware.anyway, the phone is working oustanding the way it is. thanks for the answers.:good:

Encrypted? Have tried mostly everything.

I want start by saying that I did not take the 4.3 OTA from Verizon. I flashed my phone from 4.2.1 to 4.4.1 cm11 and various KitKat Roms. My last being mastamoons version. I wanted to flash back to a 4.3 TW ROM for stability. KitKat has been wonderful the days it decided to be 100% stable. But the myriad of issues plaguing my daily apps, freezing or phone rebooting warranted a flash to TW 4.3. I made a forum post because I was not entirely sure how to flash from 4.4 AOSP back to 4.3 TW and the advice given to me on CleanROM 8.1 thread was to format data, cache, dalvik and flash the zip. I did so and everything was fine. No bootloop (yet, kinda. Will get to that). So my phone rebooted and the first try got me to the start screen. Here is where things go wrong. It asks me for my PIN or Password as if it is encrypted. I've never encrypted my phone so I was perplexed. I thought maybe I triggered KNOX? But CleanRom 8.1 is touchwiz. But it doesn't not include KNOX from what I've read. I've wiped system and tried multiple methods of formatting the phone and I always get back to the same problem .

The bootloop I solved after
I formatted /system. I even restored my previous cm10.2.1 backup which was on 4.3 and I did a manual factory reset from settings. Then I formatted data, cache, dalvik and still nothing.

Try doing a complete wipe. What recovery are you using?

I have wiped system, data and cache. Isn't that a full wipe? I'm running the latest clockwork mod recovery. Thank you for your response.

You need to wipe your internal sdcard. Backup any important files to your external SD or a computer. Then wipe everything. System. Data. Internal SD card. Caches. Format system. Then flash the modem in the op if you haven't already. Should be in the op of the ROM you want to flash. Then flash the ROM. Might take up to 10-15 minutes for initial boot so be patient. You should be all good from there.
