[Q] CM7 with gapps built in?

Hi all,
on my very first flash of CM7, I had to install gapps. All worked well and I was happy.
Since then, every time I flash CM7, I get gapps already installed (yes I wiped all, yes I cleared dalvik cache, I even did the lock/unlock thing in order to clear all data).
I somehow get the feeling that my flashes are not a "clean" install.
did anyone else experience this as well?

On your first time on CM7, wipe everything, flash cm7, flash gapps. When you want to update cm7, jus wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the updated cm7. No need to reflash gapps, no need to do a full wipe either.... unless you want to.

That's not what he meant. He meant that if you are upgrading CM7, you do not need a full wipe at all.
But after a full wipe your Gapsps should be gone. It's weird that it is still there after a wipe. :S

It's still there after a wipe... is there a way to make sure I full wipe correctly?

Wipe Factory/Dalvik/Cache: Full Wipe
Wipe Factory: Removes Apps + Settings
Wipe Dalvik/Cache: Wipes the cache but your apps + settings remain.
Wiping factory will delete your Gapps.
Proper way to flash CM7:
1. Wipe Factory/Dalvik/Cache
2. Flash CM7
3. Flash Gapps
4. Flash Kernel (Optional)
5. Reboot
Proper way to upgrade
1. Wipe Dalvik/Cache (Optional)
2. Flash Kernel (Optional)
3. Flash CM7
3. Reboot

Upgrading to newer versions will now keep all your data in tact, so gapps will be there etc.

great, I think it's all sorted out now.
just one question though, I've read that CWM dalvic cache wipe doesn't work. Is that true?
If so, what is the best way to wipe dalvic cache and do factory reset (fastboot/adb commands are also welcome..)

It works. Somebody confirmed this, the error that pops up during CWR is SD EXT.
You can check for yourself, run a logcat (search the forum) while the phones booting.

[Q] Stuck on HTC Logo after Flashing Rom (HTC Flyer)

HTC Flyer: Rooted with S-off, with Revolutionary CMW 4.0.1.4
At the first attempt, I flashed the SU.zip and got the tablet working. But then i decided to flash the Leedroid rom.
Within revolutionary, i wipe the data/cache/davche and then flash the new leedroid rom. There are no issues on flashing the rom and it was successful, however when i reboot.... it is stuck on the HTC logo screen. After 20-30 minutes, the tablet just shuts itself off.
Due to this, i decided the wipe again and install a different rom (CoolHoney3D) however same issue. Then i decided to go back to original SU.zip and that is not working now as it has the same issue.
I downloaded the recovery image for the HTC flyer and try to install it with Scottsrom. No LUCK
I believe i am missing a step in the whole process. please let me know what the problem is. I read all the tutorial to do the recovery but i am a noob and couldnt figure it out. sorry for my bad english..

As stated above, i did a wipe on system/cache/dache cache. Flashed different roms already and still getting the error

Stated abouve dosent say full wipe, just says wipe data and cache. Wipe data, system, cache

IF you have done a full wipe then you will have to flash again the rom....you have no information in your device....

Which option is full wipe?
I did 3 types of wipe (System/Cache/Dache Cache) then installed the roms again. It said the Rom installed correctly but still got stuck at the HTC screen. Like i said, i installed the original su.zip again and that doesnt work anymore
Another question, do I have to install su.zip first before installing the leedroid rom?

-Wipe Data/factory reset then..
-Wipe Cache partition then..
-Wipe Dalvick Cache then..
-Flash Rom
-----I dont see format system anywhere though?

I am S-OFF (Revolutionary) The problem is i still have the same problem after wiping data/cache/davich

or skip the su.zip rom

Skip the "su.zip". So just flash the "CoolHoney3D" rom, wipe the dalvik cache, then reboot. You could format all partition before flashing the rom if you haven't already done so. In other words:
- Format partitions
- Flash the rom
- Wipe the dalvik cache
- Reboot

appreciate your help but i am still stuck on the HTC screen. I am not sure if i should just do a full recovery. I looked into the RUU but too confusing for me.

Are there any other roms you can download? Maybe the one you have is just corrrupt

Dirty vs Clean Flash

A dirty flash is only wiping cache and davlik then flashing your ROM....
a Clean flash is at LEAST factory reset/data wipe + wiping davlik(factory wipe takes care of /cache also)... Maybe doing a format /system also.

If I switch ROM's I factory reset then wipe cache and dalvik cache. If it's a theme for example I only wipe cache and dalvik cache since the theme is suppose to be made for your ROM right?....don't see the reason to reflash the ROM as well.

New rom, even if it's the same android build: always, full wipe
Themes: No wipe at all, flash right on, right after flashing rom's. Don't like to wait for two bootups!

Il throw a vote to whichever works.. I usually dirty wipe.. If I have issues then clean it and try again.. With nightlies I tend to be fine dirty a lot, but even still I will do a clean every couple weeks just because..

I always wipe data, flash rom, then advance restore data only from a nandroid...dirty flashing in its most elegant form

So we all agree that a dirty flash is just wipe cache/dalvik cache.
Do you wipe prior to re-flashing, or afterwards? Does it matter?

What about flashing a new, updated kernel for a rom you're currently using? What steps should be taken for that? For example, cleanrom 2.1 comes with cleankernel 1.1, but the kernel has been updated to 1.2 and is out as a seperate download. How would you update just the kernel that's made specifically for the rom you use?

When I dirty flash, I wipe data cache n dalvik cache. Once I flash what I wanted, I wipe those two once again n select "fix permissions" just in case

I disagree. I believe a dirty flash also wipes system. If you are 100% certain that your ROM build effectively wipes system as part of it's install routine, then you could skip this step, however I always wipe system to be safe. This works for me and I rarely need to wipe data or sd card(s).

When changing Kernels but not the ROM in a separate recovery session than a ROM flash, you don't need to "dirty wipe." Just wipe cache and dalvik. Dalvik wipe is key so that the dalvik virtual machine can be rebuilt by the new kernel.

I usually dirty on nightlies until I have issues. Always clean when switching roms.

What if im just switching between stock rom nandroid backups? Can I just restore from one to one? I only have two backups anyways both for stock. Never flashed a rom before

I find that this method works better than just wiping cache and dalvik, since im advance restoring data over a clean flash. both ways are considered dirty flashing tho.

I wipe dalvik, cache and battery stats. Works like a charm thus far. Wiping data is what blows out the IMEI correct?

Incorrect, flashing anything is what may lead to losing your IMEI. Backup using the appropriate tools in the development section. Btw stop wiping battery stats, it's not necessary.

Factory reset doesn't touch the davlik(Which I speculate(Guess) has to do more with the kernel than anything)

Usually when I flash a new kernel, or a different kernel, I just wipe the davlik cache and I am fine. There was some reboots after the first boot on the AOSP ROMs but afterwards it ran fine.

SlimSnoop is correct. According to one of the developers of a very prominent ROM the IMEI issue was because our phones got confused sometimes(Randomly phone to phone) and tried to reset during a flash. The data it tried to reset was bogus, therefor losing IMEI. He is also correct far as the wiping battery stats. It's only usefull when you have really strange results with battery. Google for the real reason to use them.
Far as backing up your IMEI so you will never run into the problem of losing it.... go into your terminal (almost every ROM has a Terminal emulator)
Type this:
su
then hit enter. Grant permissions
then type:
reboot nvbackup
then hit enter. This will make your phone do some shyt and reboot, but you really shouldn't need to worry about your IMEI after this. Regardless of how many ROMs you flash or what you do or who you date or who you kiss, etc... blah blah....
This really should be the end all for the IMEI...

New rom only when their bases are different , like going from ics to jb, or the dev says to do it (Even then Ill try it without a wipe because im lazy).
Themes I never wipe anything
Nightlies never wipe anything.
Edit: If I do have issues I then go back and wipe delvik and cache . That usually straightens out any issues and allows me to keep my setup.

Hey, I was wondering, when I am in Clockworkmod do i have to wipe dalvik data cache and format phone? I saw a vid on youtube where i have to do all of that. do i really? or just data and cache?

Yes. You should always wipe.
In order.
factory reset,
format cache,
Advanced --> wipe dalvick cache,
Mounts and storage --> format system
Than flash your goodies!

It is always best to wipe everything. Especially when you change Roms. If you are on a cm rom and you are just upgrading to the newest version you can just wipe cache & dalvik cache, flash rom, flash gapps, & reboot. I have done it this way for years & haven't had any problems. Most people prefer to wipe everything though.

If it's your first rom, or if you're flashing an entirely new rom, do a full wipe. Otherwise, you can get away with just wiping cache and dalvik.

ya iv had it happen to me a few times and to wipe all of them is usually the way to go, you can use titanium backup if you just want to keep your app just if you've upgraded to a new rom like going to jb from ics then do a restore and uncheck all system settings you only want your apps and their data back, if it forces closes just reboot in recovery and wipe the delvik cache and it should fix it up

wipe cache partition error

hello. i installed android 4.2.2 via odin and i didn't wipe data/cache partition before upgrade. after a while i did a factory reset from settings and after that i wiped data partition from recovery. after that i tried to wipe cache partition also from recovery but an error appeared and the phone restarted.
So my question is: why when i try to wipe cache partition from recovery i have that error? if i use any aplication to wipe cache when the phone is booted to android there is no problem. also the cache can be cleared with no problem from settings/storage. The error came up only from recovery.

You are using stock recovery?
I tried wiping cache. But I didn't notice error. And yes it also rebooted itself, which I didn't ask it to. But my cache was cleared

Yes,i am using stock recovery. Well i did not try to wipe cache on 4.1.2, just on 4.2.2, so i do not know if on 4.1.2 is doing the same. Do you have 4.1.2 or 4.2.2? I also read that s4 users have the same error while wiping cache partition after updating their android. Could another flash solve the problem?

actually if it does the work, it doesn't really matter if it reboots itself after wiping cache, after all you only need it to wipe your cache, so if it does the job, then why let the problem bother you

agree with you, but how do i know if the cache is cleared if i have that error?

Go to settings. Storage.
There should be a column saying:
Cached data.
If it's a lot, then it's not cleaned

now its 60mb, but several days passed from the time i tried to wipe cache partition. yesterday i received a notification for a software update. it was 4.2.2 I9105PXXUBMI1, which replaced the one that i flashed with odin I9105PXXUBMG8. when i will have time i will try again to wipe cahe from recovery, maybe the problem is fixed with this new firmware.anyway, the phone is working oustanding the way it is. thanks for the answers.:good:
