Can't enter download mode anymore - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I have rooted and flashed my phone before, but now I am completely unable to get into download mode. None of these methods have worked:
Put in battery, Hold Vol Down + Vol Up and plug in USB
Hold Vol Down + Power and plug in USB
Leave battery out and hold vol down + vol up, plug in USB
Basically I've tried all the methods on the forums and wiki.
This started happening after I used the one click stock Heimdall.. I want to go back to CM.
ADB does not detect my phone so I can't use the adb reboot download option.
SuperOneClick does not detect my phone so I can't root and use CWM.
I am on 2.3.6 which may(?) have a different button combo from what I read.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I've tried 2 different computers and have uninstalled/reinstalled drivers twice. Even completely uninstalled Kies and reinstalled Kies to try. It always says "Please connect your mobile phone".
In the Kies menu I go to Menu > Update Drivers and it stays at 0% forever, but in the previous install process it implies drivers were installed already so maybe that's why.
Thanks for your suggestion

Take battery out, put battery in, vol + and - and USB? You didn't mention that one.

Do you know that it's possible that your phone may be in download mode but the screen is black?

I usually take battery out, plug in usb, hold volume buttons & then drop in battery. Try using your wall charger instead of the computer, it still should go download mode. Try a different cable too.

getochkn and champ1919: just tried those methods on 2 different cables including my wall charger. The phone just boots up into Gingerbread instead of going to download mode.
Another weird thing I just noticed: My phone will not go into a standard "charge" state. If it's turned off (whether through power off or removing battery) and I plug it in, it just boots up.
I wasn't aware DL mode could be a black screen but that's not happening either.

You might have to buy/make you a jig then.

If you pull the battery and put it back in without a usb cord attached does the phone stay off or does it boot up by itself?

It does stay off, but if I plug in the USB it boots.
Just bought a USB jig on ebay (can't solder) so hopefully that will fix it for me (should have probably just done it earlier considering I've spent a few hours on it now LOL)

Try this first. lol I've never used it but it should work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jakar.rebootwidget&hl=en

App won't do, he's not rooted.

Good catch. I missed the stock heimdall part.

So I got my USB jig, and it got me into download mode right away (yay!)
But I'm still not able to root.
Heimdall simply waits for my device to connect.
Zadig shows "Unknown Device" with USB ID 0000 0000 and gives error Driver Installation: FAILED (Resource already exists)
I tried using the usbdeview tool to remove all Samsung and Android USB drivers, and the same results.
Superoneclick hangs after starting ADB server.
Kies is still not working.
I have tried 3 different USB cables.
Windows now says: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
Is it possible the USB port on my phone only works for charging now? Guessing there's nothing even Samsung can do as I purchased it used over a year ago. It's so weird as the phone is otherwise perfect.

You have to uninstall all the drivers you have again and reboot the pc, then get into download mode plug it in and then try to run a heimdall one-click. I think it should figure out the driver situation on it's own.
If not then run zadig. But don't use kies drivers for heimdall or vice versa or you'll be back in driver hell

Just tried this, didn't work. Still not recognized, and zadig just shows unknown device. Thank you for your help..

I'm with twitchy on this one, sounds like driver issues. Sometimes it gets labeled as a serial gadget.... have you tired the usb port change? Even the one on the back of the pc?

If it is a driver issue I haven't been able to resolve it so far with Kies, Cclean, Heimdall, Zadig, Mini Kies, or the official samsung drivers on 2 different computers. I've also tried several different ports on my PC and laptop.

Have you tried plugging in the phone in download mode, going into device manager and deleting whatever drivers it has for the phone?

[Q] phone brick

it all started when i wanted to try the Stock Deodexed T959VUVKG4 with Root, and i went to the red recovery i had, voodo recovery, and i did all the unmount, mount, and all that good stuff.I flahsed the room waiting for the process to finish but i got stock on the galaxy logo. when i went back to the post, i read that recovery didnt work for some reason, so i decided it was time for me to restore my phone using odin, but my pc doesnt recognize my phone anymore, whenever i plug in the cable to the pc, its like nothing has happened, i have installed all of the usb drivers ive seen on the web, but nothing seems to work, any suggestions???/
Did you forget to disable voodoo in CWM and then reboot to un-convert the file system before you started flashing?
to get into download mode, are you sure you are holding both volume up/down buttons down while you plug in the usb?
the kg4 doesnt have the bootloaders, so you should be able to get into download mode using the three button combo.
i disabled voodo lagfix but i did not reboot the phone instead i flashed the room right after. and i am holding both volume up/down buttons down while i plug in the usb and i see the download pictures and everything
and what do i do if my pc doesnt recognize my phone???

I had an issue where my pc would not recognize my phone in download mode after flashing the original 2.3.4 posted by chadster. I finally got it to recognize it by installing all the drivers used with heimdell. Hope that helps.

ive tried that but the only driver that my pc recognizes is my wireless driver.thanks for the help everybody.
ok. drivers are sometimes a problem. restart the computer and then reinstall the drivers. then plug your phone into a different usb port from what you had it and go into download mode. let me know if that works.
i will try again with Heimdall to see if it works
Can you try taking the battery out for 30secs open odin plug the usb in the phone hold vol up and down then slap the battery in while still holding keep holding it and if a com sign comes up in odin flash it even if screens blank

it doesnt work
i still have the same problem with the usb drivers, does anybody know how to fix it?
Try uninstalling all your phone's usb drivers, then go to the device manager in system properties, right click on your USB controller, and uninstall the device. Then reboot your pc, and let windows find and reinstall the USB controller. Then reinstall the samsung usb drivers, and see if that works.
I had the same issue once.
I had the same issue before and was able to fix it by rebooting the phone and letting GB boot up. I then turned on debugging mode and plugged the phone into the pc. I then installed the hemi drivers and windows installed the device and everything worked after that. From what I've found, after you flash GB, sometimes it wont recognize the device anymore, so putting the phone into debug mode after booting seems to force it to use the correct drivers. Hope this helps!
I'd try the fevers then hold up and down and put USB cord in

Stuck in Download Mode

Yes I have looked, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 and searched for quite an extensive time before giving up as I have not found a solution to my problem.
This is pretty much what happened, I was rooting my i727R through odin when the usb jiggled out of the original spot a bit and cancelled the Odin recovery.img transfer, I thought I was okay, until the device on longer showed up in Odin(no yellow bar saying COM: specifying the port my device was in).
I then tried plugging in the device again, with Windows greeting me with "The last usb you plugged in has malfunctioned". Sooo I started to panic a bit. Upon plugging the device back in numerous times(with the ODIN MODE screen bootlooping every time I removed the battery+cable) I saw the yellow COM: indicating the device was plugged in, however when I tried to flash back to stock it did not work. Now I can no longer get my device recognized by Odin or Kies and my device is stuck in Download Mode. Can any bright members shine some light on this little situation I'm in? Thanks
Uninstall the samsung drivers, reboot the PC, then install them again and try.
Use a USB port connected to the motherboard if you have a tower PC. You may need to try to enter Download mode fresh. Hold power and both volume buttons until it reboots, then let go of ONLY the power button. This will force Download mode again and may get the PC and ODIN to recognize it and install the drivers again. Hope this helps
Thanks mate, found the problem myself. One of the bottom pins of the micro usb was broken on the phone, just bent it back and now Odin detects it. (Y)

[FIXED!] Can not get into download mode

Here is what happened. I was on CM7 with blue cwm, flashed paranoid android successfully, phone works, calls/mms work, everything works but i get rainbow cwm. In order to fix this i followed the directions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705260, was on step 3 when i installed kies i had the phone connected to the computer via usb. After kies installed i received an error in windows saying the usb device could not be recognized. Since then no matter what i try i can not get the phone into download mode.
Things i have tried:
1- pulling battery, reinserting, holding +- volume while attaching usb cable
2- different usb cable
3- different computers
4- turning on and off debug mode
5- mounting usb via cwm (pretty sure thats what i selected, hard to see with cwm so messed up)
6- uninstalling and re-installing kies+drivers
Any ideas?
***UPDATE: Fixed... installed 2.3.6 rom with red cwm, then installed PA through red cwm. Download mode now works and rainbow cwm fixed, doesn't make 100% sense but it is fixed...
Outstanding pls change title to SOLVED.

Ok so I jumped the gun early last night in assuming it was fixed. As my update states on red cwm and no rainbows, I can get into download mode through cwm (advanced menu). That's as far as I got last night before I went to bed, this morning I went to re-install PA since the phone was stuck at samsung logo (like PA thread says in installation procedures) and i got an installation error. Went into download mode to put today's update on it and found out the PC was unable to recognize the phone. I tried un-installing kies and just installing the infuse drivers, when i connect the phone i get an error saying the device is not recognizable. Tried un-installing the drivers and reinstalling kies+drivers and get the same device is not recognizable error. I also tried different usb cords and on a laptop and get the same device not recognizable on both computers.
Really at a loss now on what to do since the same error is happening on two different computers, something must be wrong with the phone or cwm? Unable to follow un-brick guides since odin won't recognize the phone... Any ideas?

Since you can get into CWM, there is still so much hope for you, it'll just require trying a bunch more stuff but you will figure out out.
IDEAS:
Did you try installing PA again via CWM? If you are still on red CWM, that means you're not on an ICS kernel yet. You want blue CWM. Maybe try installing the PA zip a couple more times after doing a wipe.
If you're still on red CWM, you might be able to still install a GB rom that might be on your SD card to at least get you out of the mess for now.
For Odin/Heimdell, did you try other other USB ports, besides the 1 on each computer? Can you still get into download mode via the battery pull + volume buttons? The USB cord can be plugged into the computer before you put the battery back. I would trust that before the CWM download mode. Do you get the construction sign triangle that says "do not remove target"? That's what you want for Odin or Heimdell.

First off thanks for the help!
I was on blue cwm before I installed PA, it gave me the raindbow cwm so i figured i had froyo bootloaders still, which is what started this whole mess.
I am still on red cwm but I can not install roms off my external zip since the phone isn't seeing it, even when i try to unmount/mount it through cwm. The only rom i have is PA which is on internal sd that my phone does see. Unfortunately every time I try to install that rom now it says "successfully installed" then has an error that starts with assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "aries".
Regarding the other USB ports I have tried multiple ports on multiple computers (3 now), my newer one doesn't have usb 1.0 so I know for a fact I was using a 2.0 port, I have tried ports directly connected to the mobo and ports in the front of the case.
And here is the kicker that's really messing me up and what makes me hit a brick wall with every single post I read about this problem. I do get the yellow construction sign that says 'do not remove target', when i plug my phone into the computer with that sign on the screen the computer immediately says 'USB Device Not Recognized', then 'Device driver software was not successfully installed'. What kills me is I get this error on all 3 machines I have tried so far, with different usb cables. Since im getting this error I can not do odin or heimdall.
Sounds super frustrating. I haven't been stuck like that in a while..
Maybe remove the "solved" from your post and others might have ideas too.
I don't know about your cwm, but on mine i can access my external sd through the option called "install zip from INTERNAL sd card." That is different than the usual "install from zip" option. It's a few options down from the regular "install from zip". It is totally backwards, but let's me install from my external sd.
You are obviously having driver issues...so here is this best thing to do...do not use Odin, just try heimdal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Heimdal does not require drivers from kies or Samsung....in fact it uses its own custom drivers
Run heimdal
Connect phone in download mode
Press flash
It may say it needs to install drivers, just do as it says and follow the onscreen instructions to install the custom drivers
Continue with the flash
***when it finishes do not close the heimdal...leave it open***
Put phone back in download mode and flash again, except this time check the box for flash bootloaders-that will fix rainbows
Download mode:
Pull battery
Put battery back in
Hold volume up+down simutaniously *don't touch that power button*
While holding both volume buttons plug USB into both phone and computer
***also make sure you have java installed or else heimdall might not work***

Tried both, although I am not 100% sure im in correct download mode manual way. When i enter download mode through red cwm i get the yellow construction sign but the pc never recognizes the phone it seems. Going the manual route the phone gets stuck on the samsung logo with the 4 buttons lit up on the bottom and the pc says "usb device not recognized". So it seems the PC is seeing something the manual route but the yellow construction sign never pops up.

The Samsung logo should not pop up at all so your either doing something wrong the manual way or your infuse doesn't wanna go the manual way
It may be that your power button is borked...been seeing that a little lately...
When entering download mode it should go straight to the yellow triangle thing or to the option to enter download mode or reboot phone...again when entering download mode you should never see the Samsung logo first

OK well that makes sense, the phone refuses to go into download mode the manual way. I am 100% positive I am not touching the power button during the process.

Holding both volume buttons
re-inserting battery with volume buttons held
re-inserting usb cable with volume buttons held
it goes straight to samsung logo every time

Ok progress is made! Not sure why it worked this time but I was able to get into download mode manually! The phone immediately went to the yellow construction sign. I cleaned out the area around the power button with an air compressor (not a can), was probably just real dirty from pocket scum. Heimdall still says disconnected
Ok semi-success!
Heimdall recognizes the phone now!
When i go to flash it pops up a window with some instructions for zadig.exe (wants me to select samsung usb in next window), however when i select options -> list all devices it doesnt show samsung usb in the drop down menu. Just 'Gadget Serial' 'Gadget Serial (Interface 0)' and my IR receiver (its a htpc that finally recognized the phone).
Not sure what to do now...
Fixed!

Thanks for the help everyone!
Awesome! Glad you figured it out somehow. You might want to download zen arcade's infuse toolkit or some roms and throw them on your phone just in case something crazy happens during a flash again.
Can not get into download mode or switch on... Please help!
I have Samsung Infuse 4G and I was on Froyo and tried to root my phone with Odin3 v1.7 (I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.tar); however, messed up something now I am not able to switch on the phone or get into download mode or any boot loop screen ... nothing at all... on black screen which shows image of mobile and PC and one yellow triangle between them with "!" sign...

[Q] No download mode

About 6-7 months back I rooted my phone and installed CWMR Touch 5.5 and now as of recently I'm experiencing some problems. I've decided to flash the phone's first ROM, but I want to update the CWM version to newer one. I try to hold VOL-UP + VOL-DOWN and inserting the USB cable but it just jumps to Recovery mode, not Download mode.
I've also not been able to browse my phone's USB storage from ANY of my computers unlike usual. I can still charge the phone though; does this mean that I have a problem with my phone's USB?

as for getting it into dl mode you are doing it wrong, read the sticky in my sig, follow the directions to the "t" and keep trying until u succeed

Ahh I see the small print flashable zip down at the bottom now. I went over the stickies a few times but must have missed that one line.
Also the phone doesn't recognize the USB any more for anything but charging, so download mode is impossible, though my procedure was impeccable.

Thats what is weirding me out, none of my PCs which have always been able to access USB storage can connect. Also the phone no longer pops up with "USB Storage connected". I've tried enabling/disabling USB Debugging, USB Utilities mount function, also the *#7284# options. It is rather strange.
Never read your stickies vincom. Nice write ups. There is another way to try and access DL mode though. OP take out the battery and leave it out. Plug the phone into the micro usb cable. Plug the USB end into your comp. Hold both volume rockers down and reinsert the battery. That way has worked for me every time. Although vincoms way should work as well. If neither of those work after you have tried different cables and different computers your micro USB data pin outs are hosed. Replace the port.

Please help me

Hi
I've made a bad mistake which I'm hoping people can help me with. I tried updating my phone wit MIUI 8 as I had an issue with my battery. My updater app on my phone was not working so I downloaded zip file and tried doing it manually from the app. Then my phone just turned off and I'm unable to turn on or charge. None of the button combinations work and when I plug in to my laptop through usb port I get a message saying it doesn't recognise device. I've tried using unlock function on website but get error messages in chinese around ip address to malfunctioned phone number so no luck there.
Appreciate any help as I had a lot of information, apps and data that i would hate to lose. I lost my wife 3 months ago and I have some precious memories on that phone. I know I should have done a backup beforehand and that was stupid of me.
Is there anyway i get can my back in without losing data. if not then anyway at all to get my phone working.
Thanks, from a very down MI4C user
Try holding one of the power buttons(don't remember which one) and plug in the cable so the phone boots into fastboot mode. If you manage to get into fastboot boot TWRP and copy your files straight from it as it has mtp support. If your PC sees your phone as an unrecognizable device there's a big chance you can recover your data. Last hope would be to use a modified usb cable for edl flashing although this way you'll most likely lose your data.

Thanks, first suggestion doesn't work unfortunately. I have now been given permission to unlock bootloader but problem is the device is not recgonised due to usb issue.
So I cant turn on, won't charge etc and none of button combinations work. Has anyone encountered the issue with usb before. Unsure of 'modified usb cable for edl flashing'. All very frustrating.
thanks for any help
Anyone else have any ideas. Desperate here without my phone and important data
Have tried everything at this stage...utter despair. My phone just won't turn on or charge or enter fastboot mode etc
Anyone please help
The modified USB cable that I spoke of is used to force boot the phone into emergency download mode. It's baisicly a last hope flashing method that should work regardless of how broken the phone is. The only downside is that using this mode you only can flash via miflash and this will wipe your data. As for the cable you can either make one (look for deep flash USB cable schematic, it involves swapping 2 wires) or just buy one. Once you get into edl just follow the unofficial bootloader unlock guide to flash the 6.1.7 rom as it is flashed in the emergency mode.
Edit: whenever you plug your phone into your PC does the screen or led diode light up at all? You can also try holding vol- and power button and plug the phone into a charger (not PC) to see if it will respond at all. Charger gives more current so maybe it will force the phone to boot.

Thanks Adi. I don't think I will be able to make one. I've seen some threads elsewhere about getting into EDL mode, do you always require modified cable to do so?
Nohting happens when I plug it into PC, no lights etc. Tried charging using normal power supply but nothing happens either. Have even tried connecting to powerbank overnight but no power is taken from it.

So there is no "unrecognized device" popping up in windows anymore?
If so, let the phone lie for 1 more day (without connecting any power sources to it). Afterwards charge it (with a normal charger and a cable that works for another phone) for about 2 days (or until you see the notification led charging). if nothing happens you can try a different charger or an usb port for another 2 days.
If your computer recognizes the device ("unrecognized device" or just any reaction by connecting the phone) try to reinstall all the drivers (xiaomis/qualcoms, as well as adb, fastboot) and see if there is something happening.
Report back if it helped.
Edit: Did you try different cables? had similar problems with op2 (not recognizing) with xiaomi cable...
Edit2: to make sure the device is completely dead, use a linux distro (e.g. Ubuntu, ensures that there are no driver problems, you can install it on a usb drive) and a cable which surely works (try it on at least 2 other phones, if data transfer works its ok) then first install fastboot (ctrl+t to open a terminal) by copy/pasting "sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot". Afterwards hold vol- and power button for at least 12secs and plug mi4c in (release the buttons after plugging it in). Now you can run "sudo fastboot devices" and see if there is sth listed (should even recognize it in edl).

You don't need to use the modified cable as you can enter edl from fastboot, but the cable method is used to force the phone into it if you can't enter it the normal way. As for rescuing it, try the method @wertus33333 suggested.

Did it work?? Any information would be appreciated, so the next one with this problem doesn't have to open a new thread.... @colb16
Apologies for not updating, I got an answer on MIUI official forum from a very helpful member called Codex. Below are steps he asked me to follow and although it took a few attempts my phone came back to life after following below and then pressing power and volume down for numerous minutes.

Download ROM flashing Tool http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
Then download fastboot rom, if you don't have previously downloaded one. http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
extract the fastboot ROM
Select extract location in flashing tool
connect your phone
refresh
select SAVE USER DATA
flash
