[Q] What is the best way to extend internal memory on 8Gb P31xx? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my new SGT 2 7.0" and was wondering how to to increase applications/data storage on this unit. I know it has to be rooted. But then I got confused: there are different methods out there that are compatible with only certain ROMs, some sorts of scripts that you have to maintain/change manually and etc.
What I want is to install certain applications (Like Sygic Navigation) on external SD card (32Gb) and use internal memory for regular/small apps. The reason is that that navigation app has huge map files that cannot be stored on internal memory - no room..
Another thing I got confused is the way those scripts work: some of them allow to completely swap internal memory for external, some allow data files to be installed on the external card. Can you guys advise what is the best and easiest way to make this happen? Are there any custom ROM's that already support it? My tablet is not rooted yet and it is Android v 4.1.1 (build P3113UECLK7).
As far as I see it, being a great tablet by design - it has a HUGE functional limitation - low memory capacity - only 8Gb for 7 inch tablet. Or Am I missing something

I juat got one of those too I'd have thought 8Gb is plenty for apps. Just get a decent-sized SD card for your data (music, videos etc), preferably a class 10 card. Good luck.

The problem is that out of 8Gb we have only 4Gb available to use. The rest is already used by the system. And that is very, very limiting:crying:

You can use gl2sd app or the foldermount app, both of which require root.the first one allows you to move some apps to the sdcard and the second allows you to link and move large game/app folders to the sdcard(which is what i do, because the swap scripts do not work past4.1.2). I'm not sure if any of the external/internal swap scripts work on the p3100.

You can get it in the play store too, but with this app you can choose what to put on your card.

[Q] Using microSD for application and data external storage

I've been looking the past day, at threads for the new Tab 2 7.0 and other devices, and I'm lost. I was able to use windows to create the 2 partitions for my microsd and use Link2SD to attempt to move apps to the SD, but it still doesn't work.
I'm honestly most concerned of apps like Rdio, where the music that is saved offline is currently taking up valuable internal storage and not on my microsd.
Is this going to be possible? I am rooted, running stock ROM. Thanks!
Stock ROM does not have move2sd capability AFAIK. I think we'll have ot wait for a custom rom.
From what i herd The storage is emulate (sdext) So maby there's a was to redirect or combinevforvmore storage
p-3113 Puff, Puff, Puff,...... just sende'n smoke signals
you can use an app called directory Bind
Moved to Q&A section....place all questions in the proper sections.
Thanks

Thanks for pointing out these app, never heard of it. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work for my scenario (Rdio synced music). I can setup the directories (bind them) but then Rdio won't sync music.
I am in the same boat as you slopokdave I want to use the external for Rdio.
I guess I will have to root my device and figure out a why from there.. I am just stuck as I use mac and there is still no method to do so with it :/
I found a app that works. It's called GL to sd. I think your tab have to be rooted. This app is free on the market.

Use of SD CARD

When I had a P1000, I used a lot the feature of sending applications and games and its data files to my SD CARD with a single purpose: leave the internal 16Gb memory as free as possible for better perfomance.
Now I have a rooted P6200 and I only can use my SD CARD for storing music and videos because I have no option of MOVE TO SD CARD anymore.
I also tried some applications that MOVE TO SD CARD, but none of them work.
I called the SAMSUNG SUPPORT and they told me I should be able to move to SD, but I read somewhere that it's something about the way that Android 3 and 4 manage partitions... what makes me believe I will not be able.
So, I am confused.
Can I move applications to SD CARD or not?
Can I make a application store data on SD CARD? Example: MailDroid or a game that consumes a lot of the memory - I would prefer to store data on the SD card.
Does anybody have a hint for that?
Thank you!

There are some apps in the Google Play Market like app 2 sd or move to sd (something like that), you can try one of those.
Personally I have no experience on these apps since I still have plenty of space, but you can read a little the features and see if that works for you
Unfortunately, APP2SD does not work to me

Thank you for your suggestion, but when APP2SD starts, I receive this message:
Your device has no real primary external storage or primary storage is emulated
APP2SD will not support move 2 card.
I dont understand this message. I have the 16Gb internal memory plus a 32Gb SD card as s imple a s it can b e, but it is not moving to S D.
P lease someone help me how to solve it.
By the way, the 32Gb SD is fully recognized by the P6200. I can see all my files regularly.
Link2sd may work, but I don't think there would be any performance gain from moving the apps over.

Can I get super user access without rooting? Link2SD tells me I have to allow it to move the app.

Super User access is root access. so, no you can't.

From my point of view, rooting is something relatively easy, both to get and to lose: you just flash a zip from the default recovery. It does not even takes your flash count up. Basically, it's a single file that needs to be placed in "/system/bin/". If you need to send it to support, mount "system" as R/W and delete "su".
I could be wrong though, but you should really look into it. I think it is worth it.
By the way, I think you would have to partition your SD Card to use it with Link2SD...

Can't move apps fro memory to SD Card?

Ok guys I have the Razr Maxx HD and loving it. But im using titanium and noticed I can't move my apps from memory to my SD card. Freezing apps is no problem but once I move an app, exit and reopen titanium it appears the app was never moved. It still shows it sitting on the memory.
Any help with this?:banghead:

I asked about this at the Verizon store when I was getting a few things resolved. The response I got was that apps cannot be moved to an SD card. Only things like pics, videos, downloads, files, etc. can be stored on the SD card.
Would have been nice to know prior to purchase...
What??!! Wow that's a huge minus. Even using external apps like titanium? Smh

Yep, word on the streets (or at least from the Verizon broad's mouth) is no apps can be moved.
That's true. We can't move apps to SD Card, i bought a 32 GB SD Card before know it.

I think it has something to do with the stupid reasoning to mount the internal memory as sdcard and the sdcard as external1. If someone modified the mount list to force the sdcard to be mounted as sdcard, it would probably allow apps on the real sdcard.
That's a jelly bean thing... Android removed that ability in 4.1 unfortunately
Not meaning to seem daft, but is there a specific reason that you need/want to move your apps to SD? My understanding of how Android works now means that you can use the entire onboard memory for apps... negating the need that earlier phones had to shift apps across due to lack of space.
Some games have up to1.5 gigs of data. It doesn't take that many to fill the internal memory.

[Q] Apps and external sd card storage on ICS. What gives?

Hey all,
I just rooted my ATT Galaxy S2 first time and I think the first time android phone in general. I have successfully got to where i want to be. I have internet tethering, uninstalled all the junk, I still sticking with base rom, as I am trying to figure out why CM10 would not boot up beyond loading screen, but thats another topic.
What i don't understand is why you would not be able to move apps to external storage sd card. I used to have htc, and was able to do that, but that was before ICS. I have done some research but not as successfully as i wanted to do.
I have come across "ICS SD Binder" on play.google.com. But I dont completely understand what exactly needs to be done. Or rather bit unsure which drop down item to select and how it might effect my sd card as well as how to move apps afterwards. I assume just relocating them into that folder.
So can some one tell me why is it such a pain to have apps on external sd card and may be point me to right threads on how to point to external sd card and move my apps there or how in general i can get my apps on my external sd card.
Much appreciated and thank you in advance everyone.
I just used grooveshark and audible for my listening and educational needs. Though audio books library isnt bad at 2 gigs. Audio files that i offline are about 6-8 gigs. And thats hits my SG2 internal storage limit : /
Much appriciated.
Why do you want them on the external? They're easy to replace. Store other stuff on the external
Edit: you can use tibu to move apps to the external, but they don't always work well there.

I want to move audible and grooveshark to extranal sd so all their offline content which is about 8 gigs can reside on my 32 gig external drive.
AppMgr III (App 2 SD) on google play?
Apparently my external sd card not seen by that app only internal sd card. Which is useless....
apps2sd moves apps to internal sd not externl sd. dnt think there's a way to move to ext sd yet without assigning ext sd as internal sd and vice versa.
use search button there was a thread with this topic already

Actually this is what i was asking about.

pPossible solutions to the limited space on internal card...

Seems like the only downfall of this phone is the lack of an external SD card slot. Is any one oiy there working on an app similar to link to SD but utilizing a micro USB.card reader like the Meenova? What about a script that would swap the internal memory with the externally mounted micro SD reader? Anybody?
How about connecting our brain by spinal cord lol.... Yes there are some otg device which can help you as a external storage and no need of swap internal memory since moto G is best working at this moment

All solutions are for media only none of them provide app apk or app data support. I have been scouring the internet for days. There is no way as of yet to implement link2sd, app2sd, data2sd support for within app usage. But thanks for your sarcastic remark!

There are apps to link apps to external sd (both apk and data) via otg. You can do it manually via busybox+mount -bind or all automatic via some apps that are in this forum (I swear they are in moto-g/general, so give it a try). If I see the link again I will come back and link it to you, but I remember at least two apps available in the play store to do it.
you can try folder mount or directory bind for moving big data games to usb otg
I wouldn't see a problem with mounting your external sd card wherever you want in the filesystem.
However I would suggest to just mount the external sd card to /sdcard
Filling the 8gb with apps seems pretty impossible to me. Data stored by the app is stored in /sdcard, so that's where you actually would need more space.

Just out of curiosity, which apps do you plan to install that require more than 12.5 gb?? I do agree though that the space restriction makes it difficult to keep multiple cwm backups..

Multiple CWM backups are always annoying, no matter if you have sd card or not.
This thread on the other hand makes no sense, there are apps that do the job out there, but if you can't mange your space, then probably you ain't for Nexus-like device.
