Galaxy S4 NFC Tags Compatibility - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Hey Gang,
Just want to make sure all the S4 owners know that Mifare Classic Tags are NOT fully compatible with the new Galaxy S4 since it used the Broadcom NFC Chip. Mifare Classics are the most affordable and inexpensive and are compatible with previous Galaxy models (S3, Note, Note 2) but are NOT fully compatible with this new S4.
NTAG203 tags are fully compatible with ALL NFC phones including the new Galaxy S4!
Any NFC Tag that adheres to the NFC Forum protocols will be fully compatible so stick to those. Of those, the most popular and affordable are NTAG203 Tags which work great and have about 137 bytes of usable memory. This will be enough for almost any NFC App EXCEPT the official Tectile App which uses way more memory than it should. I'd suggest not using the Tectile app - there are many better NFC apps!
The 137 bytes on the NTAG203 tags is also enough to create a basic contact sharing tag with Name/Business/Email/Phone, but if you're wanting a full business card with name/business name/street address/website/email/phone/etc then 137 bytes probably won't cut it. (TIP: Install the NFC by MOO app - type in all the info you want on the tag and see how many bytes you need BEFORE buying).
Another tag that is gaining popularity is the Topaz 512 which is also fully compatible with ALL NFC phones and has 512 bytes of actual memory and about 480 bytes of usable memory. This should suffice for the Samsung Tectile app as well as holding all your business info. However, these are more expensive than the NTAG203 tags and will be overkill for most applications as the NTAG203's have plenty of memory for most task launchers or basic contact info.
There are other NFC Chip formats out there - any that adhere to the NFC Forums Type 1 or Type 2 compatibility protocols will work with the Galaxy S4. But based on what's readily available and popular the main thing to remember is that Mifare Classic Tags are NOT compatible with the S4; NTAG203 Tags and Topaz 512 Tags ARE fully compatible!
Hope this info proves helpful and keeps some people from wasting money on tags that aren't compatible.

Found this out the hard way. I have a bunch of mifare tags that I used pretty extensively with my skyrocket and my express and they just plain don't work with the s4. You just get an error that says "tag not supported."

Thanks for the additional info. If you search the forums you will see that there is already a couple of informative threads about this issue but more information is always welcome.

I wish I found this earlier .. I bought 5 tags off ebay and their the Mifare tags and just tried them out on my GS4 with no luck, good job they didnt cost much.
Thanks for the info about which tags actually work with GS4:good:

I used tectiles on my S3 and it was a bummer to find out it does not work with my S4. Thanks for the info :good:

Yeah....tagsfordroid are NOT compatible either. Lol. I got 10 cool stickers anyway.

This is not true. TagsforDroid sells NFC tags that are compatible with S4s, you just can't use the Mifare tags (as has been explained).

Ok, since this is the general forum, Im gonna ask a newb question... what can a user do with a NFC tag? I thought they were the type of things that I can just wave my phone at in starbucks to buy a cup of coffee with, but Im guessing they are something else altogether?

I just wrote toggle mobile data on/off, Wi-Fi on/off blocking mode on/off, & auto sync on/off using one NFC chip. These things are nice. I did not use Samsung's model.

I use tags from tagstand.com with my S4 in conjunction with the NFC task launcher app. They are compatible.
P.S. This thread should be under Accessories.

To put it short, they are little tags with chips in them that u can program on ur phone and when u place ur phone next to them it automate tasks on your phone, like I want my gps to turn on and my navigation to open up all without touching/pressing any buttons. so I can stick one of these on my car cradle and when I dock it, it does the tasks. But theres many other things u can use them for.. these have a few ideas

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" Infrared

I have been reading some reviews and from what I gathered is that the US version does not have an IR built in. Can anyone confirm this? And is this also for European versions?
I tried looking it up but some say it does and some say it doesn't.
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
I have the Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0" and YES, it does have the IR Blaster built-in.
As of now, only apps I found for it was the Peel (it came with the tablet) and Touchsquid.
I think the way it is 3113 us version has ir. 3110 international version has no ir.
good day.

I can confirm this. The Dutch (international) version (P3110) has no IR.
Samsung Tab 2 IR blaster
The Samsung Tab 2 sold in the US has an IR blaster. It appears they don't include the feature outside the US. The Peel app is not fully functional outside the US so perhaps that is why they have IR only in the US.
The Touchsquid tablet has an IR blaster, and is available worldwide. The TS PRO remote control app is included in the price, costs $49 on the Samsung.

I don't know that I'd call Peel fully functional withing the US either. It's been nothing but a buggy piece of crap that crashes all the time for me. Maybe the latest update will fix some things.

The Peel app asks you if you are International or in the US - the guide information may not work but the remote functions should work. I don't know, after about 5-10 minutes setting mine up with it working it just stopped and hasn't worked since.

NFC Tags

Which NFC tags are you guys using me and my brother are wanting to buy a pack of them. I mean the Xperia Tags, the LG Smart tags and the Samsung Tectiles are the ones we will split the cost for.
I plan on having one in my car for Music or Google Maps to launch and one by my bed for the alarm to turn on.
So what do you guys think is better or are using from the Sony LG and Samsung NFC tags.......?

Be aware that the nexus 4 (and 10) has a different NFC (Broadcom BCM20793 NFC) controller. The vast majority (all?) of previous android nfc devices has a NXP controller ...and Mifare Classic tags uses proprietary protocols developed by NXP ....so, they are not compatible with the nexus 4 / 10 ...
--> the samsung tectiles are mifare classic tags, so I wouldn´t recommend them for a nexus 4 or nexus 10!
--> sony smarttags (mifare ultralight) should be compatible, but are quite small ...
--> LG, don´t know which technology they use ...
Bottom line: try to get NFC Forum Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 or Type 4 compliant tags and stay away from mifare classic tags with your nexus 4 ...
I couldn´t give you a more detailed advice, which tags to buy, because i prefere to re-use write protected nfc tags, like my library card
I bought these ones from eBay and they work very well for me. Got a couple around the house and in my car.
I have no idea what type mine are but I have a bunch from the XDA keychains from the Big Android BBQ. These ones.
They work really well. And XDA TV they show you that it's possible to open them up and remove the sticker. Now I've got one in my car dock and one in my desk dock.

I'm using NTAG203 from RapidNFC and they are working fine.
Yes, you can use the ID for some apps (like nfc retag ) , but you can not read or write MIFARE Classic 1k tags... At least theoretically and with my testing Nexus 4 device on 4.2....

The only thing that can be read from Mifare tags is the UID, and that can be used to trigger actions using an app like NFC Task Launcher, but you can't actually read or write any data to the tag.
You can test this out with a tag and the app NFC Smart Q, or by trying to write a tag with a Nexus 4 and read it with a GNex or other NFC device. I've tested this pretty thoroughly.
Basically, if a tag is Mifare compatible or a Mifare tag, it'll kinda work, but not properly with a N4.
Without special needs (outdoor, metal) NTAG type will be best choice for most. Newest type with highest ScanStrength.
With the Xperia smartTag app, you can use the tags on a very differente way. It doesn’t write anything to the tag, it just associates a set of commands with the found ID/URL. May be interesting for some.
I bought a kit of them from tagstand.com back when I purchased my Galaxy Nexus and have a few left over. I just tried them out with my Nexus 4 and they seem to work, though I've only tried the ones with their old logo on it, I believe they are all Type 2 though and should work fine.

Nexus 4, NFC Task Launcher
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I got some free samples of TI Tag-it NFC tags.
Ended up with 5 standard (23 message bytes) and 5 plus (250 message bytes) NFC chips, that are about the size of a US quarter.
The standard ones are quite slow (have to hold the phone over the chip while it takes a few seconds to read it), while the plus ones are quite a bit faster.
I have just set up an NFC tag using the free tag that comes in the AT&T Sony TL box.
I got a dozen tags from Tag Age (http://www.tagage.net/) roughly 2 years ago and they have worked great with my NS, using NFC Task Launcher (prob an older version. got it way back when the dev was first working on it on XDA).
I get the most use from a bedside tag for clock/sleep (until I got the official NS dock) and a tag on my universal car dock for Bluetooth and car mode.

Can you program to those? According to another seller, they don't work with the Nexus 4. The model seems to be one letter off (1108 vs 11R08), but that may be a typo. Also, that seller says these are Mifare classic, but in this page it's implied that the S50 is something else and that it is compatible with the Nexus 4 and 10.
Just double checking cause I'm getting some.

I guess, as all other Korean version of Samsung phones, this phone has problem with SMS more than 70 chars and multipart SMS?
Also, this phone comes with two lame colors making it out of my interest
I'm waiting for I9506 with traditional black color. Well, kind of black, but anyway better than blue or red.
The latest firmware solve the issue. I have tried no issue for me,,,

This is not an issue. This is the standard for Korean mobile network operators. Nothing to fix there. Probably, you didn't understand what i meant.
Can you send SMS with, let's say 300 characters? both latin and non-latin symbols?
Thanks for the info... I know what u mean after 160 character, it should split into two SMS.

May be it's possible to fix it using some parts from I9506 firmware if E330S doesn't have too much hardware differences in modem connections.
Actually, I'm very familiar with this problem because I've used SHV-E210K for more than a year. I've succeed to use whole I9300 firmware with some framework patch and few libraries from E210 firmware. But since it's very tricky and not exactly will work for E330S, I'm not confident to buy this phone, although I can buy it here in Taiwan without much hassle and for a good price.
I still hope I9506 will widely spread later this year, so i don't have to mess with Korean firmware anymore
Well actually I dun use SMS that often now... it is really useless to me.... everyone is in watsapp and other application for chatting.
I hope someone could solve the video calls and update of software still prompting required of SKT SIM and ROAMING not allowed.
the mcc and mnc is hardcoded into the firmware.

Yeah, there are lot of SKT (in my case it was KT) things are hardcoded in firmware(framework) of Korean version. That's why I've decided to move to I9300 firmware with patches instead of trying to patch E210K firmware.
I agree that SMS is not as important as it was before, but still in some cases you cannot replace it by whatsapp or other internet messengers. Still many people i know don't use mobile data plans. So, SMS is the only way to send the message to these people. The problem with SMS even worse when your communicate in non-english language where you limited by only 70 unicode characters. For example, in Russian language with its usually long words is really hard to fit sentences into 70 characters

I'm curious if dimensions of E330S are exactly as I9500/I9505?
My E210K is a little thicker than I9300 making almost all hard cases incompatible.
Also, curious if back cover and its hooks of E330 is compatible with I9500/I9505? I know about antenna corner cut (which is easy to make), but besides this back cover of E210 has completely different hook positions than I9300 making covers completely incompatible.
I have some kind of itching I want SD800 version, but don't wanna wait for I9506. But having experience with complete absence of accessories for SGS3 SHV-E210, i don't want to loose accessories again.

By the way I'm happy that I bought the e330s. Speed, 32gb, charger and second battery are worth the trouble to impoprt it from Korea. All is as I hoped it would be. The only drawback is that I didn't figure out how i get NFC working.

My I9500 came with 32GB, second battery and charger as well. The only difference for me will be Snapdragon vs Exynos. I hate the way Samsung did by splitting market to two incompatible devices. Although Exynos is very competitive comparing to SD600, game developers don't bother to tweak their games to Exynos version.
While Exynos is more interesting by CPU (i wanna wait to see if 5410 will get HMP support or not) and better sound, i want to have well supported device, i.e. SD version. Although i don't care of CM/AOSP/GE ROMS.
Well, going to order E330S in Black Mist color. I've found such version!
SD800 is pretty insane in term of performance... u wun get any phone that is purely make in korean, even for the battery.

My model is almost the same, only the build number is a little different on mine, it called: JSS15J.N9006ZCUBMJ3
On mine the pen / air command works fine - the shortcut menu appears.

Nice ^ And the remote feature does not work for me, everything else is perfect i think, just the remote control
Edit, After watching your test instead of Mayiandjays you tought me how to use the remote, thank you
I guess this is the Note 3 clone post (only one!?!) so I'll ask my questions here! My phone is similar, but I think we'll all have a hard time finding "real" specs as you will soon see...
Have any of the rest of you tried any benchmarking/info apps to find out your real CPU/GPU/RAM specs yet?
My phone came with a (locked) version of Antutu that I think was hacked to show better scores and info. I rooted the phone (with Framaroot) and deleted the old version, installed a new version from the Play Store, and installed CPU Identifier. Antutu still miss-read the specs, but CPU Identifier gave a more realistic picture. (but not perfect)
The original Device Info screen: imgur.com/Js8e4FI or see "deviceinfo.png" below
Antutu's (still incorrect) device info screen: imgur.com/0OMilGl or see "antutu.png" below
CPU Identifier gave me a more realistic view of the processor, but still incorrectly shows 3GB of RAM: imgur.com/caapx2o or see "cpu identifier.png" below
Do any of you know an app that can show how much RAM this device actually has?
The processor seems to have confused Antutu and CPU Identifier as well since Antutu thinks its a quad-core Snapdragon, and CPU Identifier thinks its a dual-core MediaTek processor but says that the GPU is incorrect for the model it thinks it is.
I guess it will be a while before we know if any custom rom will work on these phones, but it would be nice to be able to use Xposed. I'm a little worried about trying it, but I'll probably get impatient soon and try it. It would be nice to at least know what rom is actually on it, as I think that info has been faked as well. I've tried to see if I can get any better info from the factory mode menu, (power + vol. down while booting), but it's all in Chinese: imgur.com/ivDFE4s or see "screencrap.png" below. Does anyone know what it says or how to change it to English?
---------------------------------
Okay, now the good news:
-It's actually a good phone for the price! I payed the equivalent of around $110 for it last weekend.
-The screen is bright and responsive, similar to the videos in this thread.
-The back of the case is branded like Mayiandjay's.
-The S pen is similar to the other pens. It looks almost exactly like the Samsung, with a fake button on it. The S pen menu only appears when you take the pen out, and I don't think the menu can be moved around the screen.
-It had the same desktop layout as the videos, but I think I lost some of that (and apps?!?) when I did a factory reset from the settings menu. I lost the Samsung boot up screen, (now it's an Android ani), and I don't seem to have the remote control app.
-The air gesture worked well (a bit better than s7yler's), and smart screen paused movies when I looked away.
-Multi window didn't work, but there is an app dock tab on the left side of the screen.
-It seems to get good signal and 3g, but I don't know about 4g. (we don't have that here)
-It is USB 2 with the fake USB 3 ports like the others.
-The Play Store is in the Galaxy Plus Icon/menu
-The resolution isn't what Antutu reports (1080x1920!) but I think CPU Identfier's 540x960 is correct, or it might be a bit better.
-The camera is only 8 megapixels, but that's okay, I don't take many pictures.
-While I don't think the phone has 3GB of RAM, the closest I've found to what might be more accurate is through using Usemon. While monitoring the RAM, it seemed to show about 1.5GB, but that might have been faked too.
All in all, it seems to be a good phone. I think s7yler's and Mayiandjay/Christopher.J.M's are better if they are actually quad-core, but until I can find an app I can trust or until I can change the rom, I don't think any of us can say what the specs are with confidence. This phone seems better than the other clones I tried out, so I'm happy with it.
U only have a dualcore phone friend

Can one of you guys who got the device tell me if you have to pay extra taxes when it reaches the customs? Also how is the smoothness of the ROM and hows the battery life?

Paying tax/custom control all depends on how luckly you are! With some of my orders, DHL delivered without any extra, while with others DHL contacted me and wanted bank or paypal proof of the value. There is no bullet proof rule that you can use. It is random if they stop your package when it comes from China.
The ROM is smooth, and the battery life is really good! seems to be near real 3200mAh.

For instances im thinking about buying mayiandjay's version and paying for dhl shipping with the original box, since my countries tax is 23% over the original value does that mean if the customs catch it i will pay a quarter more? or do i just need to send them the payment proof?
