[Q] Finally Got My Note 10.1 - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New thread further down the list! SWEET!
I got this tablet for school, trying to go paperless. I came from TF-101, now my wife's, so I know how things work. My question is, what is the best most stable Rom for this device? I like customizable roms but stability is a must. Any ideas out there?
I tired Omega but had problems connecting to my schools wifi, we have to use a third party app to connect, went back to stock and no problems.
Also, whats the best keyboard and word document for this bad [email protected]# machine?
pbaldw10

Unfortunately there is no specific one rom.. U will have to try a few roms and see what fits the best.
Omega rom has been the best for me, but very slow with updates..
Keyboard - best is the default one but lacks spell check.( there is a mod available in this forum) . I use swiftkey for typing and default for handwriting..
Word document -i like officesuite pro but Many like polaris , etc are good too

Im starting to think just leave well enough alone. I love it so far and each day I find something new. Tried Omega and collection v6. Stock seems to be the best so far.
Any ideas on dock able keyboards and can I use a mouse with this. Im thinking full laptop replacement.
S- pen is nice, but sometimes you just have to type.
Ps
Odin is awesome, its like flahing roms and restoring is completely encouraged.

A word app you might want to give a try is CloudOn, a free app that is as close as makes no difference a full MS word and Excel for your tablet. It's not perfect and it lags a bit (at least here in Europe, maybe it's because it's webbased and the servers are in the US) but it has the advantages that all equations, tables, pi pictures, figures and so on you have in your document is displayed properly.

try redemption rom :good:

First off congratulations on the note 10.1 !. Personally I would stick with stock, maybe root it, debloat it and enjoy. There are a lot of great roms out there but there are a lot that suffer from weird quirks and glitches, Also I would advise against using any custom kernels or overclocking as they have a tenancy of causing crashes in my experience

I'll second CloudOn, and also second the lagging. If you need to do some serious work in Excel, I don't thing it can be beat. Else you can usually find me in Google docs for first stays of papers, notes and things like that.
As for keyboards, I picked up a Microsoft wedge bluetooth keyboard and couldn't be happier. I found a new in box item on eBay for $45 shipped, in stores I think they are closer to the 60-70 range.

Nothing against any developer, but without source code hard to get perfect results. Most very good considering.

+1 to Papyrus.
As I just got this tablet a few days ago, still undecided whether I want to keep it or not, the smaller development kinda surprised me.

If you're using it to replace paper for school, you're best off with a rooted stock rom so you can do multiwindow everything but keep everything stable. Also, lecture notes + dropbox => golden notes.

Indeed, but what he is asking for is something stable and stock imo is the most stable, not saying there are not good roms out there, but the last thing he needs is his note crashing after have written a Bunch of stuff for school

You missed my first post, "the best rom is already on it".

Correct. The standard firmware is very stable.
I use lecturenotes to take handwritten notes it also allows you (with the extra plugins) to record the audio while you make your notes. You can even record the audio plus a video of the notes so you can play it back after.
Another small recommendation, if you like mind maps simpleminds is great.

Has anyone tried Overskreen (floating browser) on the note?

You guys get Stick It and OverSkreen by dev myboyfriendisageek?
It works but I like Cornerstones way of 3 dedicated windows for any app. Anyone know if Cornerstone is releasing anything soon?

Its something that modifies the Android framework, so it cannot be a regular app. It has to be cooked into the ROM by the developer in order to be used. It's also incredibly unstable and is renown for breaking root access while open. The kinks are being worked out...

I got it yesterday and it is as good as the video shows. Very smooth. If they can get OverSkreen to work with other apps (like cornerstone onskreen does) it would truly be amazing!

Thanks for the tip!
I just installed this app, and wow! I wasn't even sure I had any use for it, but after a couple minutes I was enjoying the heck out of it. I usually use the desktop view in my regular browser (Dolphin), so I'll just keep this one in mobile view and use it for quickly checking out links without switching away from Tweetdeck or whatever I'm in. In fact, it's awesome to be able to click a link, start that page loading, and then continue browsing through tweets or posts while the page/video/whatever is loading in the Overskreen window.
It's very smooth, too; almost too responsive, if that's possible. I'm impressed.
The one down side is lack of flash support in Android 2.x. However, 3.0 and 4.0 are supported, so that shouldn't be an issue for much longer. If I need to visit a flash site, I can just jump over to Dolphin anyway.

i bought this and love it. are there any other launchers or apps that work like this? feels more like a PC every day.
another update today. .with sliding tabs. . this is becoming my favorite browser and overall app. .
Thanks for letting us know about this, I installed it without knowing if it was something I would use but on first run I saw many benefits, especially on a large screen device like the Note.
I particularly liked the fact you can view YouTube vids full screen then scale the browser window to whatever size you want, then maybe have a cool tutorial video in the corner as you work on the app underneath!
It was a bit pricey but I think in this case it was worth it.

Previous SNote?

Hi guys!
I got my Note yesterday and after I've upgrade it to the new Android version I've got the new SNote as well and I'm not a fan! My palm is accidentally zooming when I rest it against the screen in a way the previous one didn't and the buttons at the top bar was much more intuitive to me.
Any other with the same problem and maybe a solution? I am open to new better apps as well, I've tried LectureNotes but as an engineering student I'm really in to the SNote shape/function/search the web functionality and I have not seen any app that's anywhere near SNote considering that.
Thanks in advice!

You can disable hand writing so only the s pen is activated, the button can be located at the lower right side of the screen just right of the add page button. The symbol is a hand. Hope this help

Thanks! That was the first thing I did, but the zoom is still active at least when the pen isn't near (14mm/~1 inch or what it might be) and in reality I don't have the pen that close to the screen at all times. The strange thing is that I didn't have these problems with the previous model, maybe they changed it in some way when they added the "pinch to delete page" functionality? And besides I liked the little arrow that completely minimized the toolbar and gave me a blank screen to write on which have now mysteriously disappeared.
I think there is an apk file with the previous version somewhere but even though I've been Google it for the last hour I can't find one! Anyone who has it on their tablet?

Hats the new Snote app. I liked the fact that the menus would hide to increase size of the page for writing, and switching from pen to eraser was jn one place on the right. All gone.

hi, i gt the same problem, eng student too, apparently alot of users have same problem, its been around before we got the update in uk, since aug 2012 as far as i know, i tried many apps, paperus might be a gd one for us but it aint as good as s note, i emailed samsung and i think if alot of users does so something might happen to improve it, or if any devs could jus take the zooming option out,
would you mind emailing samsung so that they could get a massive user feed back.

Exactly, to me the ideal is to have a blank piece of paper and be able to put the tools needed (maybe different pens and the function/shape thing) as floating boxes just like you do at CAD programs etc. SNote got just that, and to be honest SNote was a huge part of why I bought this tablet in the first place. Now it's kinda useless though...

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one having troubles or disliking the new SNote, the more that have problems the faster a solution will appear I hope. I have actually only tested LN besides SNote, mostly because LN is great in any way but SNote it isn't. It doesn't have the mathematical function recognizer nor the shape recognizer and just doesn't seems to work as well with the rest of the system. Like the "screenshot, drag and drop" that works like a charm in SNote where I can look something up at Wolfram and paste it to my notes. It does have some advantages over SNote though, I feel the pure writing is better on LN and it have for example the really simple but so useful feature of "select part/text and move it", more easy to customize background etc.
Not at all! I thought of the same thing myself, I just wanted to check if I was the only one having this problems. But the easiest and by far fastest way to deal with it would of course be if anyone had an Old SNote apk file to install. Adding a "lock zoom and pan" option won't solve the problem with the whole new version suck, and I think getting them to get back to previous versions will be difficult.

That's actually not a bug I think, you can adjust the screen brightness in many apps individually. I'm not quite sure where in the new SNote though..

I got a reply from Samsung Sweden today where they apologized and told me that I, for a cost, could get the previous SNote version if I got the tablet to a service center. On one hand I think it's great that they actually give the customers the option of having the previous version back but on the other I think it's rubbish having to pay for it when it it because the new one is working like ****. There might be a chance that the downgrade will just be a couple of bucks but I'm afraid it won't.
I'm going to reply to Samsung once again, this time with a movie I've made that illustrates the problem with the shape and math identifier. To be continued..

This is obviously a solution however to me this isn't an option since I think everything from the general flow to the multiscreen capabilities is that much better than on ICS and even though SNote is a big part of this tablet LectureNotes is not far behind. But don't get me wrong, I wanna have both of them working!
I made a simple video that illustrates the problem with the shape and math identifier, even though that's just a small bit of the problem with the new SNote feel free to use it for example in contact with Samsung!

Thanks for your answer!
No it's not, I've got 4.1.1 and have the version 5r16958FV03 so it's not even close. However, I don't think everyone's got these strange problems and I don't have them all the time either. But it's way too often to be acceptable, especially since the precious one didn't have any problems what so ever (as far as I could tell).
Have you noticed any other bugs or are your version of SNote a stable functional one?
Another thing I noticed now when I looked up the version of SNote is that I have not one but two "programs" named SNote, the main one of 8.8MB and another one of about a quarter of a MB. Is it possible that the smaller one is the upgrade? I couldn't disable it in any way unfortunately, and when I forced it to stop nothing happened in SNote but that might be because it started up again.

Two semi serious questions:
1. How does Polaris feel like a paranoid uncle (I'm genuinely curious - I work for QO and use it fairly often when testing things for customers or just spying on our "competition"'s apps)?
2. It looks like the Galaxy 2 tab can get Jellybean - do you really need Swiftkey with Jellybean (since Jellybean supports the swiping motion)?

Haha I was just being goofy, I simply like QuickOffice better and the general layout and interface of Polaris bothers me for some reason. Purely my own opinion.
Yes jb does have swype, but I don't use it. SwiftKey works better for me and my large fingers, as you can increase the key sizes (sm, med, or lg) . With the stock keyboard, I'm always banging wrong keys. Swift seems to have much better predictions, so I'm much more efficient by using the prediction. It also learns ur patterns. Sorry it sounds like an advert lol

[Q] Problem with palm rejection

Hi guys, i am on stock ROM, not rooted, because i use the tablet for college, so basicly for work and not playing around
I gfinally got the JB update about 1.5 months ago and ever since then i got this bug that the palm rejection doesnt work at all
I use quill to write insted on paper, and everytime i lay my hand down it recognises it as a qick double tab which lets it zoom out
Anybody knowing what could have happend, what i shall do now (i want to prevent that i have to send it in, cus it takes quite a while and i need it every day), i am also ready to root it (got root experience of rooting htc desire z, htc mytouch 4g slide and a galaxy s1) but if i do this, has anyone a good stable and kinda stock-close ROM where palm rejection and just everything else works...i even wouldnt mind going back to ICS if i have to

Obviously the tablet will still detect your palm in an app like that no matter what or else the touch screen wouldn't work right..lol. Rooting/custom rom will not solve your issues. I suggest you go back to ICS if it really is better. For me, I see no difference. Good luck.

The palm is detected as 2-3 fingers, so if i lay it down it is as if i would make a fast double tab, which leads on quill to zooming out
I got this bug since the official JB update, on ICS it was just fine
So, basicly i ask if anyone else is experincing this with the official update, or maybe it is just an update failure for me
Also if no one has those problems after rooting, i may consider doing so, but i dont want to go through all the ROMs here cus of time issue :/

I don't use quill I use papyrus and it doesn't do that for me. Cyanogenmod would be the best bet if you wanted to try a custom rom. The other roms are very similar to what you have already and won't help. Rooting and flashing on this tab is easy if you say you're so experienced already. No bootloader to unlock or anything on Samsung.

Very easy root it wi cf auto root
Install cmd spen control root
Now you can create a gesture to disable finger touch and use the spen instead of your hand very easy and works like a charm

I'll go with papyrus now, and have zoom disabled
But thats a nice option too
Also: if i root, (and only root it, no flashing or anything else) do i have to make a factory reset?
Only got htc experience and there you dont really get around doing a factory reset
The SGS1 i had was from a friend, so i had to reset it anyway

You can root it easly without delete anything just download odin and cf-autorootn8000.tar
Now open odin and flash the autoroot file in the pda tab process complete
All the operation take less than 5 min
Gd luck.

Root doesnt have a whole lot to do with it. I use quill as well and dont have that problem but I'm used to laying the PEN down on the page or at least close to the screen first and then rest my palm on the screen.
The way it works is the screen detects finger/capacitive touch first and then detects the pen. If you touch the pen on the screen or close to the screen first, it will ignore any other touches.
Personally I prefer quill for jotting down quick notes or calculations, and then I use lecturenotes for real notes pages. In quill, I found the doubletap zoom and 2finger zoom unreliable regardless so I turned that off. When I want to zoom or move the page, I just click the button to zoom/move the page.
Hope that helps.

U have a really big problem, since i use my note10 for taking notes as well at school, i can understand how damn annoying it could be if it register palm.
about the rom, i would suggest u to use this:
[ROM][N8000]::::: X-Note Zero Edition Build 1 [MC5]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236328
it removes alot of useless stuf (Snote,S calendar, samsung apps etc) f. Rom is alot faster than the stock rom, nd alot smoother aswell.
U can still flash snote if u like (link in the roms thread) but papyrus nd lecturenotes do better job than Snote.
ps. for calendar+memos u can try Franklinplanner, simply awesome app, and as a launcher i recommend apex launcher ^^,
hope i helped

Today: stock vs custom?

Hi everyone, I'm a newcomer to the note 10.1 and so far it has been great!
However owning a nexus S has made me quite the flashaholic.
So I decided to root my note, of course, but I am still debating on whether custom roms/kernels are worth it. I've looked around and many threads state that stock rom is the most stable, however they go back to 2012.
So my question is : Is it better to keep stock nowadays or is it worth it to go custom ( to get functionalities like multi - tasking for all apps , potential for better performance and battery life, etc... )? What do you think?

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm quite happy with stock so far (quite a departure from my Asus stock ROM, which were useless), and would definitely stick with tw-based ROMs.

yes I think it's best to stick with tW-based roms too . So decided to give it a go anyways. I'm trying Android Revolution and so far, so good!

Ha, I'm tempted by the Hyperdrive ROM myself.
Using gloryrom with no problems
I tried Revolution and it was alright. Omega was really good but not updated frequently enough for me. I love Hyperdrive paired with his Zeus kernel and am just hoping it continues to get regular updates.
While stock is certainly the most stable, I always like to "clean house" every so often and try a new ROM. The bloat of the stock really is unbelievable and it's amazing how much speed can be squeezed out when scrapping all the parts that I don't really need. I also like that it forces me to look at alternatives that are often better than the stock Samsung applications. Ie, for serious note taking I tend to use lecture notes while I'll default to Quill for anything quick that I want synced automatically between devices ala S-Note style. It also means that I'm not tied to trying to install S-Note on any future devices that are not Samsung.
Still, it's really personal preference and how much time and energy you want to put into it. The developers out there really have put a lot of time and attention into the custom ROMs and regardless of my own preference, they should all be applauded for their hard work.

I think if you have a Nandroid backup you can try custom roms .
But not a great difference from stock .
jje
In my opinion sticking to stock ROM or any custom one depending on the stock is much better to have the multi window functionality and better Spen integration for gestures and so .... and for having multi window on stock ROM for all apps U just have to root and install multiwindow from the app store
Personally I stick with stock rooted. This is one device where the stock rom really doesn't need to be improved.
Cosmetic theming can be achieved through a third party launcher without sacrificing function....
Of course there's always those who try to improve , but that's because this is a developement forum....
